Mechanical Effects of Elastic Crystals Driven by Natural Sunlight and Force

The Use of Photocycloaddition Reactions to Drive Mechanical Motions Resembling Humanoid Movements

With the aim of producing a photomechanical material for incorporation in soft microrobots, a one-dimensional diene coordination polymer (CP) [Cd(F-bpeb)(3-CBA)2]n (CP1, F-bpeb=4,4'-((1E,1'E)-(2,5-difluoro-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl))dipyridine, 3-HCBA=3-chlorobenzoic acid) was synthesized and characterized. Irradiation of CP1 with ultraviolet (UV) or visible light causes [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions resulting in the introduction of crystal strain which triggers various types of crystal movements. Composite films of CP1-PVA (SC) fabricated by dispersing CP1 crystals into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution allow amplification of the crystal movement so that the film strips exhibit fast and flexible curling upon photoirradiation. The composite films may be cut into long rectangular strips and folded to simulate soft microrobots which exhibit a variety of fast, flexible and continuous photomechanical movements resembling a human performing various gymnastic exercises.

A visible-light regulated luminescent switch based on a spiropyran-derived Pt(II) complex for advanced anti-counterfeiting materials

A dual optical switch regulated by visible light has been developed through an integrated strategy, including luminescent Pt(II) and photochromic spiropyran (SP) as a triplet-sensitizer and photo-regulator building block, respectively. An efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process is achieved, along with apparent and emissive color changes under visible light irradiation and temperature stimuli, which was utilized to develop advanced anti-counterfeiting materials.

Crystal Engineering-Driven Sunlight Responsiveness and Flexible Waveguide Transmission

Here, a barbituric acid derivative containing pyrene rings (DPPT) was successfully synthesized, and two types of crystals were prepared by using crystal engineering methods. Orange sheet-like crystals (DPPT-O, observed in visible light), prepared in a DCM/CH3OH solution, exhibited brittleness and weak fluorescence emission, along with sunlight-induced bending and fracturing. Red needle-like crystals (DPPT-R, also observed in visible light), synthesized in a DCM/CH3CN solution, demonstrated elastic properties, strong fluorescence emission, and excellent optical waveguide performance (with an optical loss coefficient of 0.23-0.30 dB mm-1). Single-crystal data analysis revealed that the stacking arrangement of molecules critically influenced the elasticity of the crystals, while the reaction cavity size regulated the photomechanical properties of the crystals. This study achieved effective control over sunlight responsiveness and flexible optical waveguide transmission for the first time, providing innovative insights for the application of homogeneous organic polycrystalline molecular crystals in this field.

Photo/Mechanical/Acidic Multi-Stimuli Responses and Information Encryption Design of Acylhydrazone Derivative

Stimuli-responsive crystalline materials have received much attention for being potential candidates of smart materials. However, the occurrence of polymorphism-driven stimuli responses in crystalline materials remains interesting but rare. Herein, three polymorphs of an acylhydrazone derivative, N'-[(E)-(1-benzofuran-2-yl) methylidene] pyridine -4-carbohydrazide (BFMP) were prepared. Form-1 undergoes a photomechanical response via E→Z photoisomerization under UV irradiation, accompanied by a decrease in fluorescence intensity and a change from colorless to yellow. Two types of Z→E thermal isomerization mechanisms with significant differences in conversion rate were observed at different temperatures in form-1. The solid-melt-solid transition has a faster conversion rate compared to the solid-solid transition due to freedom from lattice confinement. The transition from form-2 to form-3 can be achieved under grinding, coupled with a significant decrease in fluorescence intensity. The similar molecular stacking pattern of form-2 and form-3 provides a structural basis for the grinding-induced crystalline transition behavior. In addition, the presence of the pyridine moiety imparts an acidochromic property. The combination of photochromism and acidochromism explores the possible applications of acylhydrazone derivatives in information encryption.

Photocycloaddition of Zero-Dimensional Metal Halide Hybrids with Reversible Photochromism

In this work, two zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide hybrids L2ZnBr4 [1, L = (E)-4-(2-(1H-pyrrol-3-yl)vinyl)-1-methylpyridin-1-ium] and L6Pb3Br12 (2) were prepared, which demonstrated photochromism and photoinduced cracking. Upon irradiation at 450 nm, a single crystal-to-single crystal transformation occurred as a result of the [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of L. Interestingly, compared to the complete photocycloaddition of L in 1, only two-thirds of L monomers could be photodimerized in 2 because of the difference in L orientation. 1 shows reversible photochromic behavior including rapid response time, few cracks, high conversion rate, and good reaction reversibility, while 2 exhibits no significant color change but distinct photoinduced cracking because of the large local lattice strain induced by inhomogeneous and anisotropic deformation. Moreover, the photocycloaddition of L results in the distinct shift of photoluminescence of 1 and 2, attributed to the variation in conjugation of π electrons and distortion of metal halide clusters. As a proof-of-concept, reversible optical writing is demonstrated for 1. These findings provide new insights into the design of stimuli-responsive multifunctional materials.

Miniaturized and untethered McKibben muscles based on photothermal-induced gas-liquid transformation

Pneumatic artificial muscles can move continuously under the power support of air pumps, and their flexibility also provides the possibility for applications in complex environments. However, in order to achieve operation in confined spaces, the miniaturization of artificial muscles becomes crucial. Since external attachment devices greatly hinder the miniaturization and use of artificial muscles, we propose a light-driven approach to get rid of these limitations. In this study, we report a miniaturized fiber-reinforced artificial muscle based on mold editing, capable of bending and axial elongation using gas-liquid conversion in visible light. The minimum volume of the artificial muscle prepared using this method was 15.7 mm3 (d = 2 mm, l = 5 mm), which was smaller than those of other fiber-reinforced pneumatic actuators. This research can promote the development of non-tethered pneumatic actuators for rescue and exploration, and create the possibility of miniaturization of actuators.
