Abstract
Although the crystals of coordination polymer {[CuCl(μ-O,O'-L-Br2Tyr)]}n (1) (L-Br2Tyr = 3,5-dibromo-L-tyrosine) were formed under basic conditions, crystallographic studies revealed that the OH group of the ligand remained protonated. Two adjacent [CuCl(L-Br2Tyr)] monomers, bridged by the carboxylate group of the ligand in the syn-anti bidentate bridging mode, are differently oriented to form a polymeric chain; this specific bridging was detected also by FT-IR and EPR spectroscopy. Each Cu(II) ion in polymeric compound 1 is coordinated in the xy plane by the amino nitrogen and carboxyl oxygen of the parent ligand and the oxygen of the carboxyl group from the symmetry related ligand of the adjacent [Cu(L-Br2Tyr)Cl] monomer, as well as an independent chlorine ion. In addition, the Cu(II) ion in the polymer chain participates in long-distance intermolecular contacts with the oxygen and bromine atoms of the ligands located in the adjacent chains; these intramolecular contacts were also supported by NCI and NBO quantum chemical calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis. The resulting elongated octahedral geometry based on the [CuCl(L-Br2Tyr)] monomer has a lower than axial symmetry, which is also reflected in the symmetry of the calculated molecular EPR g tensor. Consequently, the components of the d-d band obtained by analysis of the NIR-VIS-UV spectrum were assigned to the corresponding electronic transitions.

Abstract
Copper(II) complexes with an α-diimine show a wide variety of biological activities, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anticancer. In this work, we synthesized and structurally characterized two novel Cu(II) complexes with methyl 3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzoate (HL) and α-diimines: 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen). Crystal structure analysis shows that the formulas of the compounds are [Cu(bipy)(L)(BF4)] (1) and [Cu(phen)(L)(H2O)](BF4)·H2O (2), with BF4- as a ligand in complex 1, which is rarely coordinated to metals. Both complexes have a square pyramidal geometry, while DFT calculations showed that the most stable structures of complexes 1 and 2 in a water/DMSO mixture are square-planar derivatives [Cu(bipy)(L)]+ and [Cu(phen)(L)]+. The antibacterial activity of compounds was evaluated in vitro on four Gram-negative and four Gram-positive bacterial strains. Complex 2 showed greater antibacterial activity towards all bacterial strains comparable to the control compound Amikacin. Complex 2 exerted a strong cytotoxic effect against the tested cancer cell lines (IC50 values ranging from 0.32 to 0.44 μM). Both complexes caused apoptotic cell death in HeLa cells and a noticeable in vitro antiangiogenic effect. In the concentration range of 5 to 100 μM, the complexes showed the absence of a genotoxic effect and displayed a protective effect against oxidative DNA damage induced by H2O2 in human peripheral blood cells. The interaction between the compounds and calf-thymus DNA was evaluated by diverse techniques suggesting a tight binding, which was also confirmed by molecular docking. In addition, it was found that the complexes bind tightly and reversibly to bovine and human serum albumin.

Abstract
Under physiological conditions, spectroscopic techniques as well as molecular docking simulation have been used to investigate the binding interaction mechanism between Cu(II) complex containing Pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDCA) and Diethanolamine (DEA) ligands, [Cu(DEA)(PDCA)] and human serum albumin (HSA). UV spectral changes of protein in the presence of the Cu(II) complex suggested the formation of a Protein-Cu(II) complex conjugate with specific new structure. The Cu(II) complex quenches the intrinsic fluorescence of the HSA via a static mechanism in which van der Waals interactions along with hydrogen bonds are fundamental binding forces. Displacement experiments performed by warfarin and ibuprofen site probes predict that the Cu(II) complex is located in subdomain IIA, Sudlow site 1 of HSA. Molecular docking results showed close resemblance with experimental data.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
In this communication, we feature the synthesis and in-depth characterization of a series of silver(I) complexes obtained from the complexation of quinolin-4-yl Schiff base ligands ((E)-2-((quinolin-4-ylmethylene)amino)phenol La, 2-(quinolin-4-yl)benzo[d]thiazole Lb, (E)-N-(2-fluorophenyl)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)methanimine Lc, (E)-N-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)methanimine Ld, (E)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)methanimine Le, (E)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)-N-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)methanimine Lf) and three different silver(I) anions (nitrate, perchlorate and triflate). Structurally, the complexes adopted different coordination geometries, which included distorted linear or distorted tetrahedral geometry. The complexes were evaluated in vitro for their potential antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In addition, their interactions with calf thymus-DNA (CT-DNA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were evaluated. All the complexes had a wide spectrum of effective antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial and good antioxidant properties. The interactions of the complexes with CT-DNA and BSA were observed to occur either through intercalation or through a minor groove binder, while the interaction of the complexes with BSA reveals that some of the complexes can strongly quench the fluorescence of BSA through the static mechanism. The molecular docking studies of the complexes were also done to further elucidate the modes of interaction with CT-DNA and BSA.

Abstract
A novel water soluble ternary copper(II) complex,-[Cu2(phen)2(3-IAA)2(H2O)](ClO4)2·H2O-(phen: 1,10-phenanthroline, 3-IAA: 3-indoleacetic acid), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental CHN analysis, ESI-TOF, FTIR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Interaction of the complex with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) has been investigated by absorption spectral titration, ethidium bromide (EB) and Hoechst 33258 displacement assay. The interactions between the complex and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were investigated by electronic absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy methods. The experimental results indicate that the fluorescence quenching mechanism between the complex and BSA is a static quenching process. The Stern-Volmer constants, binding constants, binding sites and the corresponding thermodynamic parameters (ΔG, ΔH, ΔS) of BSA + complex systems were determined at different temperatures. The binding distance between the complex and BSA was calculated according to Förster non-radiation energy transfer theory (FRET). The effect of the complex on the conformation of BSA was also examined using synchronous, two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, the oxygen radical scavenging activity of the complex was determined in terms of IC50, using the DPPH and H2O2 method, to show that it particularly enables electron loss from radical species. This study highlights the importance of indole and moieties in the development of antioxidant agents. A potent drug candidate novel water soluble ternary copper(II) complex,-[Cu2(phen)2(3-IAA)2(H2O)] (ClO4)2·H2O-(phen: 1,10-phenanthroline, 3-IAA: 3-indoleacetic acid), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental CHN analysis, FTIR, ESI-MS and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The complex has been tested for in vitro biomacromolecular interactions by spectroscopic methods. Furthermore, radical scavenging activities of the complex were also investigated.

Abstract
Three iridium(III) complexes ([Ir(Hppy)2(L)](PF6) (Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine, L = 5-nitrophenanthroline, NP), 1; 5-nitro-6-amino-phenanthroline (NAP), 2; and 5,6-diamino-phenanthroline (DAP) 3 were synthesized and characterized. The cytotoxicities of Ir(III) complexes 1–3 against cancer cell lines SGC-7901, A549, HeLa, Eca-109, HepG2, BEL-7402, and normal NIH 3T3 cells were investigated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazoliumbromide (MTT) method. The results showed that the three iridium(III) complexes had moderate in vitro anti-tumor activity toward SGC-7901 cells with IC50 values of 3.6 ± 0.1 µM for 1, 14.1 ± 0.5 µM for 2, and 11.1 ± 1.3 µM for 3. Further studies showed that 1–3 induce cell apoptosis/death through DNA damage, cell cycle arrest at the S or G0/G1 phase, ROS elevation, increased levels of Ca2+, high mitochondrial membrane depolarization, and cellular ATP depletion. Transwell and Colony-Forming assays revealed that complexes 1–3 can also effectively inhibit the metastasis and proliferation of tumor cells. These results demonstrate that 1–3 induce apoptosis in SGC-7901 cells through ROS-mediated mitochondrial damage and DNA damage pathways, as well as by inhibiting cell invasion, thereby exerting anti-tumor cell proliferation activity in vitro.
