Blue Highly Fluorescent Boranil Derived From Anil Ligand: Synthesis, Characterization, Experimental and Theoretical Evaluation of Solvent Effect on Structures and Photophysical Properties

Boron-Salphen Conjugate based Molecular Probe Exhibiting Fluorescence On-Off-On Response in Detection of Cu2+ and ATP through Displacement Approach

Synthesis and photophysical properties of a fluorescent probe HBD is described. Probe upon interaction with metal ions, anions and nucleoside pyrophosphates (NPPs) showed fluorescence quenching with Cu2+ due to chelation enhanced quenching effect (CHEQ). Moreover, interaction of ensemble HBD.Cu2+ with anions and NPPs showed fluorescence "turn-On" response with ATP selectively. "On-Off-On" responses observed with Cu2+ and ATP is attributed to an interplay between ESIPT and TICT processes. Cyclic voltammogram of probe exhibited quasi-reversible redox behaviour with three oxidation and two reduction potentials and the change in band gaps of probe suggested the interaction with Cu2+ and ATP. The 2 : 1 and 1 : 1 binding stoichiometry for an interaction between probe and Cu2+ (LOD, 62 nM) and ensemble, HBD.Cu2+ with ATP (LOD, 0.4 μM) respectively are realised by Job's plot and HRMS data. Cell imaging studies carried out to detect Cu2+ and ATP in HeLa cells. Also, the output emission observed with Cu2+ and ATP is utilized to construct an implication (IMP) logic gate. Test paper strips showed naked-eye visible color responses to detect Cu2+ and ATP. In real water samples probe successfully detected copper (0.03 μM) between 5-6.5 ppb level (ICP-MS method).

Importance of BODIPY-based Chemosensors for Cations and Anions in Bio-imaging Applications

Background:

Chemosensor compounds are useful for sensitive selective detection of cations and anions with fluorophore groups in an attempt to develop the effective selectivity of the sensors. Although familiar fluorescent sensors utilizing inter-molecular interactions with the cations and anions, an extraordinary endeavor was executed the preparation of fluorescent-based sensor compounds. 4,4-difluoro-4- bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (Bodipy) and its derivatives were firstly used as an agent in the imaging of biomolecules due to their interesting structures, complexation, and fluorogenic properties. Among the fluorescent chemosensors used for cations and anions, Bodipy-based probes stand out owing to the excellent properties such as sharp emission profile, high stability, etc. In this review, we emphasize the Bodipy-based chemosensor compounds, which have been used to image cations and anions in living cells, because of as well as the biocompatibility and spectroscopic properties.

Methods:

Research and online content related to chemosensor online activity is reviewed. The advances, sensing mechanisms and design strategies of the fluorophore exploiting selective detection of some cation and anions with Bodipy-based chemosensors are explained. It could be claimed that the using of Bodipy-based chemosensors is very important for cations and anions in bio-imaging applications.

Results:

Molecular sensors or chemosensors are molecules that show a change can be detected when affected by the analyte. They are capable of producing a measurable signal when they are selective for a particular molecule. Molecular and ion recognition that it is important in biological systems such as enzymes, genes, environment, and chemical fields. Due to the toxic properties of many heavy metal ions, it is of great importance to identify these metals due to their harmful effects on living metabolism and the pollution they create in the environment. This process can be performed with analytical methods based on atomic absorption and emission. The fluorescence methods among chemosensor systems have many advantages such as sensitivity, selectivity, low price, simplicity of using the instrument and direct determination in solutions. The fluorescence studies can be applied at nanomolar concentrations.

Conclusion:

During a few decades, a lot of Bodipy-based chemosensors for the detection of cations & anions have been investigated in bio-imaging applications. For the Bodipy-based fluorescent chemosensors, the Bodipy derivatives were prepared by different ligand groups for the illumination of the photophysical and photochemical properties. The synthesized Bodipy-based chemosensors have remarkable photophysical properties, such as a high quantum yield, strong molar absorption coefficient etc. Moreover, these chemosensors were successfully implemented on living organisms for the detection of analytes.

Boranils: Versatile Multifunctional Organic Fluorophores for Innovative Applications

Multifunctional stimuli-responsive fluorophores showing bright environment-sensitive emissions have fueled intense research due to their innovative applications in the fields of biotechnologies, optoelectronics, and materials. A strong structural diversity is observed among molecular materials, which has been enriched over the years with a growing responsiveness to stimuli. Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes have long been the flagship of emissive boron complexes due to their outstanding properties until a decade ago when analogues based on N^O, N^N, or N^C π-conjugated chelates emerged. The finality of developing borate dyes was to compensate for BODIPYs’ lack of solid-state fluorescence and small Stokes shifts while keeping their excellent optical properties in solution. Among them, the borate complexes based on a salicylaldimine ligand, called by the acronym boranils appear as the most promising, owing to their facile synthesis and dual-state emission properties. Boranil dyes have proven to be good alternatives to BODIPY dyes and have been applied in applications such as bioimaging, bioconjugation, and detection of biosubstrates. Meanwhile, ab initio calculations have rationalized experimental results and provided insightful feedback for future designs. This review article aims at providing a concise yet representative overview of the chemistry around the boranil core with the subsequent applications.

Circularly Polarized Fluorescent Helicene-Boranils: Synthesis, Photophysical and Chiroptical Properties

Mono- and di-boranil-substituted helicenes were prepared by BF₂ -borylation of the corresponding anils, readily synthesized by condensation of 2-amino- and 2,15-diamino-helicenes with 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde. After enantiomeric resolution using HPLC, their chiroptical properties including circularly polarized fluorescence in solution and in PMMA films were investigated and rationalized with the help of NMR, X-ray and quantum-chemical calculations.

State of knowledge: Histolocalisation in phytochemical study of medicinal plants

BACKGROUND AND AIM

The renewed interest in medicinal plants has led us to examine more closely the usefulness of metabolite histolocalisation in screening work before any in-depth phytochemical studies. Indeed, this method is a histochemical technique allowing characterizing plant tissues constituents; and in particular metabolites of therapeutic interest, without destroying or altering as much as possible the studied plant material. This work aims at allowing us carring out a wide screening to highlight bioactive metabolites in plants studied from our rich university heritage collection.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The histochemical characterisation used in our work is a chemical, morphological and topographical (localisation) technique that uses precipitation reactions using dyes, among others. To do this we made thin cross-sections using razor blades on fresh plant material. The sections were then coloured using conventional chemical stains and observations were made using a MOTIC BA210 microscope equipped with a MOTICAM camera.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

In view of obtained results, this technique, therefore, proves to be a useful screening and analysis method when applied in phytochemical studies on plants such as Datura stramonium, Peperomia obtusifolia, Cecropia obtusa, Orthosiphon aristatus and Vitex agnus castus. The obtained results confirm presence of sought metabolites, and allow their precise histological localisation. This will make extraction process more profiTable, simpler or even more ecological by avoiding waste.
