Metal complexes of tetradentate azo‐dye ligand derived from 4,4′‐oxydianiline: Preparation, structural investigation, biological evaluation and MOE studies

Synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial activity studies of two Co(II) complexes with 2-[(E)-(3-acetyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl]-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)thiophene-3-carboxylic acid as a ligand

Two new Cobalt(II) complexes 12 and 13 have been synthesized from 2-[(E)-(3-acetyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl]-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)thiophene-3-carboxylic acid (11) as a novel ligand. These three new compounds were characterized on the basis of their powder X-Ray Diffraction, UV-Vis, IR, NMR, elemental analysis and MS spectral data. DFT/B3LYP mode of calculations were carried out to determine some theorical parameters of the molecular structure of the ligand. The purity of the azoic ligand and the metal complexes were ascertained by TLC and melting points. The analysis of the IR spectra of the polyfunctionalized azo compound 11 and its metal complexes 12 and 13, reveals that the coordination patterns of the ligand are hexadentate and tetradentate respectively. Based on the UV-Vis electronic spectral data and relevant literature reports, the ligand and derived complexes were assigned the E (trans) isomer form. Likewise, octahedral and square-planar geometries were respectively assigned to the cobalt(II) complexes. The broth microdilution method was used for antibacterial assays through the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The ligand 11 displayed moderate antibacterial activity (MIC = 32-128 μg/mL) against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae 22. The octahedral cobalt(II) complex 12 showed moderate activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 128 μg/mL) and Klebsiella pneumoniae 22 (MIC = 64 μg/mL) and none against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC25922, whereas the square-planar complex 13 displayed moderate activity only on Klebsiella pneumoniae 22 (MIC = 64 μg/mL).

Synthesis, Characterization, Antimicrobial, Density Functional Theory, and Molecular Docking Studies of Novel Mn(II), Fe(III), and Cr(III) Complexes Incorporating 4-(2-Hydroxyphenyl azo)-1-naphthol (Az)

This work synthesized three new CrAz₂, MnAz₂, and FeAz₂ complexes and investigated them using IR, mass, UV spectroscopy, elemental analysis, conductivity and magnetic tests, and thermogravimetric analysis. The azo-ligand, 4-(2-hydroxyphenylAzo)-1-naphthol (Az), couples with metal ions via its nitrogen (in -N=N- bonds) and oxygen (in hydroxyl group) atoms, according to the IR spectra of these complexes. Through thermal examination (TG/TGA), the number and location of water in the complexes were also determined. Density functional theory (DFT) theory is applied to ameliorate the structures of the ligand (Az) and metal complexes and analyze the quantum chemical characteristics of these complexes. The antifungal and antibacterial activity of the ligand and its complexes opposed to several hazardous bacteria and fungi was investigated in vitro. Metal complexes were discovered to have a higher inhibitory impact on some organisms than the free ligand. The MnAz₂ complex exhibited the best activity among the studied materials, whereas the CrAz₂ complex had the lowest. The compounds' binding affinity to the E. coli (PDB ID: 1hnj) structure was predicted using molecular docking. Binding energies were calculated by analyzing protein-substrate interactions. These encouraging findings imply that these chemicals may have physiological effects and may be valuable for a variety of medical uses in the future.

Designing covalent organic frameworks with Co-O4 atomic sites for efficient CO2 photoreduction

Cobalt coordinated covalent organic frameworks have attracted increasing interest in the field of CO₂ photoreduction to CO, owing to their high electron affinity and predesigned structures. However, achieving high conversion efficiency is challenging since most Co related coordination environments facilitate fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Here, we design two kinds of Co-COF catalysts with oxygen coordinated Co atoms and find that after tuning of coordination environment, the reported Co framework catalyst with Co-O₄ sites exhibits a high CO production rate of 18000 µmol g^-1 h^-1 with selectivity as high as 95.7% under visible light irradiation. From in/ex-situ spectral characterizations and theoretical calculations, it is revealed that the predesigned Co-O₄ sites significantly facilitate the carrier migration in framework matrixes and inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in the photocatalytic process. This work opens a way for the design of high-performance catalysts for CO₂ photoreduction.
