Advances in metal-organic frameworks for water remediation applications

Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Heterometallic ZnHoMOF as a Dual-Responsive Luminescence Sensor for Efficient Detection of Hippuric Acid Biomarker and Nitrofuran Antibiotics

Developing efficient and sensitive MOF-based luminescence sensors for bioactive molecule detection is of great significance and remains a challenge. Benefiting from favorable chemical and thermal stability, as well as excellent luminescence performance, a porous Zn(II)Ho(III) heterometallic-organic framework (ZnHoMOF) was selected here as a bifunctional luminescence sensor for the early diagnosis of a toluene exposure biomarker of hippuric acid (HA) through "turn-on" luminescence enhancing response and the daily monitoring of NFT/NFZ antibiotics through "turn-off" quenching effects in aqueous media with high sensitivity, acceptable selectivity, good anti-interference, exceptional recyclability performance, and low detection limits (LODs) of 0.7 ppm for HA, 0.04 ppm for NFT, and 0.05 ppm for NFZ. Moreover, the developed sensor was employed to quantify HA in diluted urine samples and NFT/NFZ in natural river water with satisfactory results. In addition, the sensing mechanisms of ZnHoMOF as a dual-response chemosensor in efficient detection of HA and NFT/NFZ antibiotics were conducted from the view of photo-induced electron transfer (PET), as well as inner filter effects (IFEs), with the help of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and spectral overlap experiments.

Metal-organic framework-based nanomaterials as opto-electrochemical sensors for the detection of antibiotics and hormones: A review

Increasing trace levels of antibiotics and hormones in the environment and food samples are concerning and pose a threat. Opto-electrochemical sensors have received attention due to their low cost, portability, sensitivity, analytical performance, and ease of deployment in the field as compared to conventional expensive technologies that are time-consuming and require experienced professionals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with variable porosity, active functional sites, and fluorescence capacity are attractive materials for developing opto-electrochemical sensors. Herein, the insights into the capabilities of electrochemical and luminescent MOF sensors for detection and monitoring of antibiotics and hormones from various samples are critically reviewed. The detailed sensing mechanisms and detection limits of MOF sensors are addressed. The challenges, recent advances, and future directions for the development of stable, high-performance MOFs as commercially viable next-generation opto-electrochemical sensor materials for the detection and monitoring of diverse analytes are discussed.

Simultaneous detection and removal of 2,4,6-trinitrophenyl phenol and dichromate by metal-organic framework

2,4,6-trinitrophenyl phenol (TNP) and dichromate (Cr₂O₇^2-) have serious toxicological effects on environment. Therefore, it is very important to detect and remove TNP and Cr₂O₇^2- in environmental matrix. In this work, a dual-functional UiO type metal-organic framework (Zr-Sti) was synthesized for simultaneous detection and removal of those pollutants in aqueous solution. As for detection, Zr-Sti exhibited sensitive and selective fluorescence response to TNP and Cr₂O₇^2- with detection limit below μM level, and possible mechanism behind was proposed and partially supported by experiment data. In addition, adsorption capacity of the prepared Zr-Sti for TNP and Cr₂O₇^2- was further investigated to evaluate its performance in pollutant removal from aqueous solution, and the mechanism behinds the obtained high removal efficiency was proposed. These results together with the satisfied recovery for simultaneous detection of TNP and Cr₂O₇^2- in real sample, indicate the potential of the prepared Zr-Sti material in the field of environment monitoring and remediation.

Thermo-Induced Fluorochromism in Two AIE Zinc Complexes: A Deep Insight into the Structure-Property Relationship

Solid-state emitters exhibiting mechano-fluorochromic or thermo-fluorochromic responses represent the foundation of smart tools for novel technological applications. Among fluorochromic (FC) materials, solid-state emissive coordination complexes offer a variety of fluorescence responses related to the dynamic of noncovalent metal-ligand coordination bonds. Relevant FC behaviour can result from the targeted choice of metal cation and ligands. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two different colour emitters consisting of zinc complexes obtained from N,O bidentate ligands with different electron-withdrawing substituents. The two complexes are blue and orange solid-state fluorophores, respectively, highly responsive to thermal and mechanical stress. These emitters show a very different photoluminescent (PL) pattern as recorded before and after the annealing treatment. Through X-ray structural analysis combined with thermal analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, PL, and DFT simulation we provide a comprehensive analysis of the structural feature involved in the fluorochromic response. Notably, we were able to correlate the on-off thermo-fluorochromism of the complexes with the structural rearrangement at the zinc coordination core.

Luminescent binuclear Zinc(II) organic framework as bifunctional water-stable chemosensor for efficient detection of antibiotics and Cr(VI) anions in water

To achieve the ultrastable LMOFs with predominant luminescent sensing performances, the aromatic π-electron mixed ligands strategy was introduced, and the ternary LMOF of {[Zn₂(HDDB)(bib)_1.5]·3H₂O}_n (1), was fabricated based on 3,5-di(2',4'-dicarboxylphenyl)benozoic acid (H₅DDB) and the N-donor of meta-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene (bib) under mixed solvothermal condition. LMOF 1 features the first reported 3D 3,4,4-c {6².8³.10}{6².8}₂{6³.8².10}₂ framework with 21.2 % porosity as well as high thermal and chemical stability. Further luminescent sensing showed that LMOF 1 as a bifunctional chemosensor possessing predominant detectability for sensitive detect the hexavalent chromates and nitroimidazoles/nitrofurans antibiotics in water through strong luminescent quenching effects, with excellent reusability as well as trace detection limits. Moreover, luminescent quenching mechanisms were further investigated from electron transfer and energy transfer viewpoints.

Colorimetric detection of acidic pesticides in water

A water-stable, porphyrin-based metal-organic framework (MOF) produces a distinct colour change in response to acids' pK_a and concentrations. This colour change is associated with the protonation of the N-atoms within the porphyrin ligand present in the MOF structure. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the use of this MOF for detecting traces of different acidic pesticides present in water samples spontaneously.

Anticancer Activity of New Na(I) Complex on Retinoblastoma Cells via Inhibiting PI3K/AKT/mTOR Pathway

Here, through applying 2,6-bis(4'-carboxyl-phenyl)pyridine (H2L), a rigid ligand featuring both carboxylic acid and pyridine groups, a new coordination polymer containing Na(I) has been generated with the reaction between H2L ligand and NaNO3 in a water and DMF mixed solvent, and its chemical composition is [Na2L]n. Furthermore, the antiproliferative activity of Na(I) complex against the HXO-Rb44 retinoblastoma cells was detected with CCK-8 assay. Hoechst staining along with Annexin V-FITC/PI revealed that Na(I) complex induces the HXO-Rb44 retinoblastoma cells apoptosis. Flow cytometry analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) showed that Na(I) complex significantly increases the level of intracellular ROS. Importantly, western blot analysis revealed that Na(I) complex might induce apoptosis through inactivation of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.

Ultrasensitive and Selective Detection of Uranium by a Luminescent Terbium-Organic Framework

Detection and remediation of radioactive components have become the focus of worldwide research interest due to the ever-increasing generation of nuclear waste and the concerns on nuclear accidents. Among the numerous radionuclides, uranium and its isotopes receive the most attention because of their high proportion in nuclear waste and long half-life. Herein, a highly luminescent terbium-organic framework, formulated as [Tb₄(C₂₉O₈H₁₇)₂(NO₃)₄(DMF)₄(H₂O)₄]·4H₂O·8.5DMF (YTU-100), with exceptional sensitivity and selectivity toward uranium was successfully prepared. The material exhibits fast adsorption kinetics and moderate sorption capacity. Interestingly, the luminescence intensity variation highly correlates to the amount of adsorbed uranium, which results in a quantitative, accurate, and selective uranium detection manner. The detection limits in deionized water and tap water were determined to be 1.07 and 0.75 ppb, respectively, which are lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency standard of the maximum contamination of uranium in drinking water. YTU-100 offers an alternative approach for building multifunctional MOFs used for simultaneous detection and removal of uranium from aqueous solutions.

A cadmium(II) coordination polymer with a fivefold interpenetrating diamondoid three-dimensional framework: synthesis, crystal structure, luminescence and photocatalytic properties

A novel three-dimensional (3D) Cd^II coordination polymer, namely, poly[[μ₂-4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]](μ₂-5-methylisophthalato)cadmium(II)], [Cd(C₉H₆O₄)(C₂₀H₁₈N₄)]_n or [Cd(MIP)(4,4'-BMIBP)]_n, (I), was synthesized by the hydrothermal method using 5-methylisophthalic acid (H₂MIP), 4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl] (4,4'-BMIBP) and Cd(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Compound (I) exhibits a novel fivefold interpenetrating 3D diamondoid framework. Additionally, it shows fluorescence emission in the solid state and promising photocatalytic activities for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in water at room temperature.

Stimuli-Responsive Zinc (II) Coordination Polymers: A Novel Platform for Supramolecular Chromic Smart Tools

The unique role of the zinc (II) cation prompted us to cut a cross-section of the large and complex topic of the stimuli-responsive coordination polymers (CPs). Due to its flexible coordination environment and geometries, easiness of coordination-decoordination equilibria, "optically innocent" ability to "clip" the ligands in emissive architectures, non-toxicity and sustainability, the zinc (II) cation is a good candidate for building supramolecular smart tools. The review summarizes the recent achievements of zinc-based CPs as stimuli-responsive materials able to provide a chromic response. An overview of the past five years has been organised, encompassing 1, 2 and 3D responsive zinc-based CPs; specifically zinc-based metallorganic frameworks and zinc-based nanosized polymeric probes. The most relevant examples were collected following a consequential and progressive approach, referring to the structure-responsiveness relationship, the sensing mechanisms, the analytes and/or parameters detected. Finally, applications of highly bioengineered Zn-CPs for advanced imaging technique have been discussed.

A fourfold interpenetrating three-dimensional cadmium(II) coordination polymer: synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties

A novel three-dimensional Cd^II coordination framework, namely, poly[{μ-bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl] ether-κ²N³:N^3'}(μ-naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylato-κ³O¹:O⁴,O^4')cadmium(II)], [Cd(C₁₂H₆O₄)(C₂₀H₁₈N₄O)]_n or [Cd(1,4-NDC)(BMIOPE)]_n, where 1,4-H₂NDC is naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and BMIOPE is bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl] ether, has been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The compound displays a novel fourfold interpenetrating diamond-like network. In addition, it not only shows a strong fluorescence emission in the solid state, but also exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) at room temperature.

Efficient chemosensors for toxic pollutants based on photoluminescent Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) metal-organic networks

Optical sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity, as important analytical tools for chemical and environmental research, can be realized by straightforward synthesis of luminescent one-, two- and three-dimensional Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) crystalline coordination arrays (CPs and MOFs). In these materials with emission centers typically based on charge transfer and intraligand emissions, the quantitative detection of specific analytes, as pesticides or anions, is probed by monitoring real-time changes in their photoluminescence and color emission properties. Pesticides/herbicides have extensive uses in agriculture and household applications. Also, a large amount of metal salts of cyanide is widely used in several industrial processes such as mining and plastic manufacturing. Acute or chronic exposure to these compounds can produce high levels of toxicity in humans, animals and plants. Due to environmental concerns associated with the accumulation of these noxious species in food products and water supplies, there is an urgent and growing need to develop direct, fast, accurate and low-cost sensing methodologies. In this critical frontier, we discuss the effective strategies, chemical stability, luminescence properties, sensitivity and selectivity of recently developed hybrid Zn(ii)/Cd(ii)-organic materials with analytical applications in the direct sensing of pesticides, herbicides and cyanide ions in the aqueous phase and organic solvents.

0D/2D Coordination Complexes: Magnetic Studies, Protection, and Mechanism against Ischemic Myocardial Damage by Reducing the Activation of the PI3K/Akt Signaling Pathway

The synthesis of two new coordination compounds was carried out by applying 4-(3-carboxyphenyl)picolinic acid (H₂cppa) as building units under the hydrothermal reaction conditions, whose chemical formulae are [Cu(Hcppa)₂(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O (1) and [Cu(μ₃-cppa)(H₂O)₂] (2). The analysis of structures suggested that 1 featured a discrete molecular structure, which was extended into the three-dimensional supramolecular network with the topology of pcu topology, whereas complex 2 showed a two-dimensional layered network with the fes topology. The magnetic performances of the two synthesized compounds reveal antiferromagnetic coupling between consecutive metal ions. Their application values on ischemic myocardial damage were assessed, and the detailed mechanism of the synthetic complexes was also investigated. The Elabscience Annexin V detection kit was used in this research to determine the percentage of apoptotic cardiomyocytes after different complex treatments. In addition, the relative expression of PI3K/Akt in the myocardium after the application of the compound was determined using the real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay.

Structural diversity and magnetic properties of six ferrocenyl monocarboxylate Mn(ii), Ni(ii) and Co(ii) complexes with 1D aqua, carboxyl or dinuclear hydroxyl bridges

Six ferrocenyl monocarboxylate Mn(ii), Ni(ii) and Co(ii) complexes with different types of magnetic coupling bridges were synthesized successfully. 1–6 display intriguing structure diversity and magnetic properties.

The oxygen atom of the MOF ether-bridging group acts as a Lewis base site, improving the connection and allowing the detection of 10 antibiotics through the fluorescence quenching effect.
