Abstract
The first-row transition-metal ions Mn2+-Cu2+ could serve as effective templates to construct three types of double-[1 + 1], [2 + 2], and [1 + 1] Schiff-base dinuclear macrocyclic complexes in the presence of dialdehydes with different pendant arms and a common 1,8-diamine. The extremely flexible nature of macrocyclic ligands allows for the multiple template-directed syntheses, but the final products could be finely tuned by the subtle variations of Mn2+-Cu2+ ions in a 3d-electronic configuration, radius, and coordination number/geometry as well as the auxiliary (pendant-armed and anionic) template effect at the same time. Two borderlines are observed at the Co2+ ion for forming double-[1 + 1] and [2 + 2] metallacycles involving the H2pdd precursor and the [1 + 1] Cu2+ complex for double-[1 + 1] and [2 + 2] macrocycles containing the H2hpdd unit, respectively. The structural diversity is originated from the non-perfect match between [1 + 1]/[2 + 2] Schiff-base macrocycles and dinuclear metal centers; hence, a compromise between the metal coordination modes and alterations of the ligand conformation takes place.

Abstract
A salamo-salen-salamo hybrid fluorescent chemical sensor (H4L) was synthesized and characterized. It exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to Zn2+ in physiological pH range. Meanwhile, its zinc(II) complex (L-Zn2+) continuously responses phosphate anions in DMF/H2O (v/v, 9:1) solution. Moreover, the identification processes are explored using characterization methods such as UV-absorption spectra, IR spectra and ESI-MS spectrum. In addition, the coordination mechanism of H2PO4- and Zn2+ were successfully exploited to make the chemical sensor reproducible. In short, the sensors H4L and L-Zn2+ will be promising detection devices for Zn2+ and phosphate anions.

Abstract
A novel bifunctional-group multi-purpose dye probe p-TNS has been designed and synthesized. The probe p-TNS has unique excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding (RAHB) coupled system, was confirmed to detect cyanide and hydrazine by blocking the ESIPT effect. Cyanide can change the fluorescence of the solution from bright green to orange-red (116 nm Stokes shift), while hydrazine causes the bright green fluorescence to be quenched. The recognition mechanism of the probe p-TNS to CN- and N2H4 was proposed reasonably through spectral characterizations and theoretical calculations. Combined with theoretical calculations, it was speculated that the solvent dependence may be caused by the ICT effect in the molecule. The probe p-TNS could be prepared into test strips for the detection of cyanide and hydrazine. In addition, the probe molecule can also be used to detect trace amounts of cyanide in agricultural products, and respond to gaseous hydrazine by direct contact, indicating that the probe p-TNS has good practical application prospects. Therefore, this molecular framework provides a new way of thinking about detecting multiple target substances.

Abstract
Novel strategies still need to be proposed that can be used to identify and detect toxic environmental pollutants. In this paper, two channels of colorimetry and fluorescence 'turn-on' fluorescent probe 1 (7-hydroxy-8-[(2-hydroxy-phenylimino)- methyl]-4-methylbenzopyran-2-one) for the simple yet highly selective detection of CN¯ have been successfully designed and synthesized. Crystal features of probe 1 were defined using X-ray single crystal diffractometry. Probe 1 showed a strongly colorimetric and fluorescence response to CN¯ that induced obvious naked-eye colour changes in aqueous solution (DMSO/H2 O, 3:1 v:v). In addition, probe 1 for CN¯ detection displayed low detection limits of 3.91 × 10-8 M, which were significantly lower than the 1.9 × 10-6 M maximum level specified by the World Health Organization (WHO) for potable water. The sensing mechanism for probe 1 was attributed to the deprotonation process as shown by 1 H NMR titration. Moreover, based on the visible colorimetry and fluorescence change for probe 1 to CN¯, measurement was performed for simulated water samples containing CN¯. This study provides a broad prospect for solving other pollution problems and promoting the design of new fluorescent materials.
