Abstract
This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in polylactic acid (PLA) extrusion, emphasizing its applications in food packaging. PLA has witnessed a significant rise in demand, particularly within the food packaging sector. A notable increase in research publications has been observed in recent years, exploring the extrusion of PLA and PLA-based composite films. In comparison to conventional techniques such as solvent casting, extrusion offers advantages in scalability and environmental sustainability, especially for industrial-scale production. The benefits of this method include faster drying times, enhanced flexibility, consistent film thickness, and less structural defects. Extensive research has focused on the effect of various PLA blends on film properties, including flexibility, elongation, and barrier properties against water vapour and gases. Furthermore, the incorporation of compounds such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, and natural pigments has enabled the development of active and intelligent PLA-based packaging. This article summarizes the types of additives employed to enhance the physicochemical properties of extruded PLA and film performance. Additionally, this article explores the diverse applications of extruded PLA in active and intelligent packaging for various food products.

Abstract
The use of biopolymers can reduce the environmental impact generated by plastic materials. Among biopolymers, blends made of poly(lactide) (PLA) and poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) prove to have adequate performances for food packaging applications. Therefore, the present work deals with the production and the characterization of blown films based on PLA and PBAT blends in a wide range of compositions, in order to evaluate their suitability as chilled and frozen food packaging materials, thus extending their range of applications. The blends were fully characterized: they showed the typical two-phase structure, with a morphology varying from fibrillar to globular in accordance with their viscosity ratio. The increase of PBAT content in the blends led to a decrease of the barrier properties to oxygen and water vapor, and to an increase of the toughness of the films. The mechanical properties of the most ductile blends were also evaluated at 4 °C and -25 °C. The decrease in temperature caused an increase of the stiffness and a decrease of the ductility of the films to a different extent, depending upon the blend composition. The blend with 40% of PLA revealed to be a good candidate for chilled food packaging applications, while the blend with a PLA content of 20% revealed to be the best composition as frozen food packaging material.

Abstract
This study examined the effect of nanoclays and surfactant on the hydrolytic degradation and biodegradation of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and PLA nanocomposites. Organomodified montmorillonite (OMMT), unmodified montmorillonite (MMT) and an organomodifier (surfactant) for MMT (QAC) were extruded with PLA to produce PLA nanocomposites. The films were produced with the same initial molecular weight, thickness and crystallinity since these properties have a significant effect on the biodegradation process. The biodegradation experiments were carried out in an in-house built direct measurement respirometric system and were evaluated in inoculated vermiculite and vermiculite media for extended periods of time. Hydrolysis experiments were also conducted separately to decouple the abiotic/hydrolysis phase. The results showed no significant variation in the mineralization of PLA nanocomposites as compared to pristine PLA. The addition of nanoclays did not enhance the biodegradability of PLA when the initial parameters were strictly controlled. The hydrolysis test indicated that the nanoclays and surfactant did not aid in the degradation of PLA.

Abstract
The inadequate rheological properties limit the film blowing process of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), thus hindering its potential application in environmentally friendly packaging films and mulch films. Herein, biodegradable polyethylene glycol (PEG) and d-lactide were used to synthesize three kinds of poly-d-lactic acid (PDLA)-b-PEG-b-PDLA (DPD) triblock copolymers, and their effects on stereocomplex (sc) structure formation and rheological properties of the composites were studied. The results showed that the poly l-lactic acid (PLLA)/DPD4k sample introduced the highest sc content, storage modulus, and complex viscosity value compared with PLLA/DPD2k and PLLA/DPD10k at the same loading condition, indicating that the PEG4k chains can better accelerate the formation of a sc network between DPD4k and the PLLA matrix. The introduction of 10 wt % DPD4k also resulted in about 38 times longer relaxation time and a strain-hardening behavior during the steady biaxial extension of PLLA. At last, the continuous film blowing process was successfully conducted in the PLLA/DPD4k composites, which acquired a stable blow-up ratio of 3.07. On the basis of the above results, the soft chain-grafted PDLA copolymer may provide a novel method for film blowing of biodegradable PLA.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to develop new multifunctional environmentally friendly materials having applications both in medical and food packaging fields. New poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based multifunctional materials containing additives derived from natural resources like chitosan (CS) and rosemary extract (R) were obtained by melt mixing. Each of the selected components has its own specific properties such as: PLA is a biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable biomass, heat-resistant, with mechanical properties close to those of polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate, and CS offers good antimicrobial activity and biological functions, while R significantly improves antioxidative action necessary in all applications. A synergy of their combination, an optimum choice of their ratio, and processing parameters led to high performance antimicrobial/antioxidant/biocompatible/environmentally degradable materials. The polyethylene glycol (PEG)-plasticized PLA/chitosan/powdered rosemary extract biocomposites of various compositions were characterized in respect to their mechanical and rheological properties, structure by spectroscopy, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. Scanning electron microscopy images evidence the morphology features added by rosemary powder presence in polymeric materials. Incorporation of additives improved elongation at break, antibacterial and antioxidant activity and also biocompatibility. Migration of bioactive components into D1 simulant is slower for PEG-plasticized PLA containing 6 wt % chitosan and 0.5 wt % rosemary extract (PLA/PEG/6CS/0.5 R) biocomposite and it occurred by a diffusion-controlled mechanism. The biocomposites show high hydrophilicity and good in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility. No hematological, biochemical and immunological modifications are induced by subcutaneous implantation of biocomposites. All characteristics of the PEG-plasticized PLA-based biocomposites recommend them as valuable materials for biomedical implants, and as well as for the design of innovative drug delivery systems. Also, the developed biocomposites could be a potential nature-derived active packaging with controlled release of antimicrobial/antioxidant compounds.

Abstract
In this paper, a dynamic impregnating device, which can generate supersonic vibration with the vacuum-adsorbing field, was used to prepare the hybrid graphene oxide (GO)/polyethylene glycol (PEG). Interestingly, the hybrid GO/PEG under dynamic impregnating and/or internal mixing was introduced into poly-(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix via melting-compounding, respectively. On one hand, compared with the internal mixing, the hybrid GO/PEG with the different component ratio using dynamic impregnation had a better dispersed morphology in the PLA matrix. On the other hand, compared with the high molecular weight (Mw) of PEG, the hybrid GO/PEG with low Mw of PEG had better an exfoliated morphology and significantly improved the heat distortion temperature (HDT) of the PLA matrix. Binding energies results indicate that low Mw of PEG with GO has excellent compatibility. Dispersed morphologies of the hybrid GO/PEG show that the dynamic impregnating had stronger blending capacity than the internal mixing and obviously improved the exfoliated morphology of GO in the PLA. Crystallization behaviors indicate that the hybrid GO/PEG with the low Mw of PEG based on dynamic impregnating effectively enhanced the crystallinity of PLA, and the cold crystallization character of PLA disappeared in the melting process. Moreover, the storage modulus and loss factor of the PLA-based composites were also investigated and their HDT was improved with the introduction of hybrid GO/PEG. Furthermore, a physical model for the dispersed morphology of the hybrid GO/PEG in the PLA matrix was established. Overall, the unique blending technique of hybrid GO/PEG via dynamic impregnating is an effective approach to enhance the property range of PLA and is suitable for many industrial applications.
