Remarkable improvement of thermal stability of main-chain benzoxazine oligomer by incorporating o -norbornene as terminal functionality

A Fluorine-Containing Main-Chain Benzoxazine/Epoxy Co-Curing System with Low Dielectric Constants and High Thermal Stability

A fluorine-containing main-chain benzoxazine (BAF-M-TB) was co-cured with biphenyl epoxy for the integrated circuit industry. The benzoxazine precursor was synthesized using 4,4'-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphenol (bisphenol AF), 2,2'-Dimethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-Diamine(M-TB), and paraformaldehyde. In addition, the 3,3'-(Oxybis(4,1-phenylene))bis(3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e][1,3]oxazine) (Benoxazine ODA-BOZ), which is a commercialized benzoxazine, was co-cured with biphenyl epoxy as a control. The two co-curing systems were referred to as EP/BAF-M-TB and EP/ODA-BOZ. The curing kinetics, rheological behavior, and thermal stability of the two co-curing systems were studied. Poly-EP/BAF-M-TB and poly-EP/ODA-BOZ quartz fiber cloth reinforced composites (QFRPs) were prepared using the prepreg laminating method in order to determine their mechanical, thermal, and dielectric properties. Both of them showed good thermal properties and dielectric properties. The dielectric constant of poly-EP/BAF-M-TB QFRP is in the range of 3.25-3.54 at the low frequency of 10 kHz-10 MHz. At the high frequency of 5 GHz, its dielectric constant is 3.16, which is better than that of poly-EP/ODA-BOZ QFRP. Additionally, the Td5 of poly-EP/BAF-M-TB was 398 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere, which is higher than that of poly-EP/ODA-BOZ.

Low-Temperature Terpolymerizable Benzoxazine Monomer Bearing Norbornene and Furan Groups: Synthesis, Characterization, Polymerization, and Properties of Its Polymer

There is an urgency to produce novel high-performance resins to support the rapid development of the aerospace field and the electronic industry. In the present work, we designed and consequently synthesized a benzoxazine monomer (oHPNI-fa) bearing both norbornene and furan groups through the flexible benzoxazine structural design capability. The molecular structure of oHPNI-fa was verified by the combination characterization of nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, FT-IR technology, and high-resolution mass spectrum. The thermally activated terpolymerization was monitored by in situ FT-IR as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Moreover, the low-temperature-curing characteristics of oHPNI-fa have also been revealed and discussed in the current study. Furthermore, the curing kinetics of the oHPNI-fa were investigated by the Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The resulting highly cross-linked thermoset based on oHPNI-fa showed excellent thermal stability as well as flame retardancy (T_d10 of 425 °C, THR of 4.9 KJg^-1). The strategy for molecular design utilized in the current work gives a guide to the development of high-performance resins which can potentially be applied in the aerospace and electronics industries.

Recent Progress of High Performance Thermosets Based on Norbornene Functional Benzoxazine Resins

With the growing demand for high performance polymeric materials in industry, several types of thermosets such as bismaleimides, advanced epoxy resins, cyanate esters, and phenolic resins have been widely investigated to improve the performance of thermosetting products. Among them, benzoxazine resins have received wide attention due to their extraordinarily rich molecular design flexibility, which can customize our needs and adapt increasing requirements. To further improve the properties of polybenzoxiazines, researchers have found that the introduction of a norbornene functional group into the benzoxazine moiety can effectively improve the comprehensive performance of polybenzoxazine thermosets. This article focused on reviewing the recent development of high-performance thermosets based on norbornene functional benzoxazine thermosetting resins.

Review on the Accelerated and Low-Temperature Polymerization of Benzoxazine Resins: Addition Polymerizable Sustainable Polymers

Due to their outstanding and versatile properties, polybenzoxazines have quickly occupied a great niche of applications. Developing the ability to polymerize benzoxazine resin at lower temperatures than the current capability is essential in taking advantage of these exceptional properties and remains to be most challenging subject in the field. The current review is classified into several parts to achieve this goal. In this review, fundamentals on the synthesis and evolution of structure, which led to classification of PBz in different generations, are discussed. Classifications of PBzs are defined depending on building block as well as how structure is evolved and property obtained. Progress on the utility of biobased feedstocks from various bio-/waste-mass is also discussed and compared, wherever possible. The second part of review discusses the probable polymerization mechanism proposed for the ring-opening reactions. This is complementary to the third section, where the effect of catalysts/initiators has on triggering polymerization at low temperature is discussed extensively. The role of additional functionalities in influencing the temperature of polymerization is also discussed. There has been a shift in paradigm beyond the lowering of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) temperature and other areas of interest, such as adaptation of molecular functionality with simultaneous improvement of properties.

Synthesis and thermal properties of phenol- and amine-capped main-chain benzoxazine oligomers with multiple methyl substitutions

A series of main-chain benzoxazine oligomers with different methyl substitutions are successfully synthesized. Chemical structures are analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. Effects of methyl substitutions on chemical shifts of protons in oxazine ring and thermal properties, including glass transition temperature, thermal stability, and char yield, are discussed. The influences of methyl substitutions on different positions are demonstrated: (i) substitution on phenols induces obvious increase in curing temperature while substitution on amine does not show apparent impact; (ii) substitution at different positions results in T g variation, following the sequence of none-substitution > substitution at end-capping > substitution on diamines in main-chain > substitution on bisphenols in main-chain; and (iii) substitution at end-capping would cause apparent deterioration in thermal stability while substitution on diamines in main-chain would benefit thermal stability and char yield. Experimental results and related explanations are provided in detail.

Synthesis of Highly Thermally Stable Daidzein-Based Main-Chain-Type Benzoxazine Resins

In recent years, main-chain-type benzoxazine resins have been extensively investigated due to their excellent comprehensive properties for many potential applications. In this work, two new types of main-chain benzoxazine polymers were synthesized from daidzein, aromatic/aliphatic diamine, and paraformaldehyde. Unlike the approaches used synthesizing traditional main-chain-type benzoxazine polymers, the precursors derived from daidzein can undergo a further cross-linking polymerization in addition to the ring-opening polymerization of the oxazine ring. The structures of the new polymers were then studied by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and the molecular weights were determined by using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). We also monitored the polymerization process by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT-IR. In addition, the thermal stability and flame-retardant properties of the resulting polybenzoxazines were investigated using TGA and microscale combustion calorimeter (MCC). The polybenzoxazines obtained in this study exhibited a very high thermal stability and low flammability, with a T_g value greater than 400 °C, and a heat release capacity (HRC) value lower than 30 J/(g K).

Phenylethynyl-terminated oligoimides with ultra-low melt viscosity derived from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxy phenoxy)benzene dianhydride

Most of the existing polyimide oligomers for resin transfer molding (RTM) processing exhibited high melt viscosity, which can only maintain below 1 Pa·s at 280°C for 2 h, leading to very high process temperatures. So novel RTM-type oligomers with lower and stable melt viscosities are more desirable. Three series of thermoset oligoimides derived from 1,4-bis(3,4-dicarboxy phenoxy)benzene dianhydride and three different aromatic diamines were prepared herein. The diamines included 4,4′-oxydianiline, 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFDB), and 2-phenyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether ( p-ODA). 4-Phenylethynylphthalic anhydride was used as an endcapping reagent. Effects of the chemical structures and molecular weights of the oligoimides on their aggregated structures, melt processability, and the thermal and mechanical properties of the cured films were then systematically investigated. X-Ray diffraction results indicated that ODA series oligoimides and TFDB series oligoimides showed crystallinity in various degrees. However, the asymmetric p-ODA enables the p-ODA series oligoimides to exhibit amorphous forms. It was found that the p-ODA-based oligoimide with a molecular weight of 750 g mol−1 showed very low melt viscosity of 1 Pa·s even at 210°C, and the melt viscosity could maintain below 1 Pa·s after isothermal aging for 2 h at any temperature in the range of 200–280°C by rheological measurements. The cured film also showed a high glass transition temperature of 355°C by dynamic mechanical analysis, very good thermal stability by thermogravimetric analysis, and good mechanical properties. It might be more suitable for RTM processes in the future.

Synthesis and thermal properties of silicon-containing benzoxazine

A novel benzoxazine, containing silicon (Si) in the main chain and bonded to two benzene ring, was synthesized from aniline, bis( p-hydroxyphenyl)dimethylsilane, and paraformaldehyde. The structure was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The curing behavior of the benzoxazine was evaluated by differential scanning calorimeter and in situ FTIR. The thermal stability of the resulting polybenzoxazine was studied by thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen and air atmospheres. The results indicated that the Si-containing polybenzoxazine possessed significantly higher initial degradation temperature and char yield than conventional bisphenol A/aniline-based polybenzoxazine.

Curing kinetics of phenolphthalein based polyphosphazene towards thermal stability and flame retardancy of polybenzoxazine

Phenolphthalein type polyphosphazene (PZPT) microspheres were synthesized by an ultrasound assisted precipitation polymerization method, and their structures were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Benzoxazine/PZPT (Ba/PZPT) hybrid materials were fabricated and cured to prepare polybenzoxazine/PZPT (PBa/PZPT) composites. The effects of PZPT microspheres on the curing kinetics and behaviors of Ba were systematically analyzed and supported by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FTIR. The thermogravimetric (TGA) results demonstrated good thermal stability of the PBa composites incorporating PZPT. The peak of heat release rate and total heat release values of PBa/PZPT-5% composites obviously deceased by 57.8% and 17.3% compared to those of the pristine PBa. Moreover, the smoke released from the PZPT/PBa system significantly reduced with the loading of microspheres. Finally, the dynamical mechanical analysis results demonstrated that the T_g of PBa flame retardant composites was approximately 210 °C, not affecting further applications of PBa composites.

Direct synthesis of poly(benzoxazine imide) from an ortho-benzoxazine: its thermal conversion to highly cross-linked polybenzoxazole and blending with poly(4-vinylphenol)

A facile one-pot synthesis of a poly(benzoxazine imide), NDOPoda Bz, was prepared without the need for either the preparation of an amino-functionalized benzoxazine or subsequent thermal treatment.

A facile method for the preparation of aliphatic main-chain benzoxazine copolymers with high-frequency low dielectric constants

The effects of the reaction solvent on the preparation, polymerization kinetics, and high-frequency dielectric properties of aliphatic main-chain benzoxazine copolymers were investigated.
