Synthesis and characterization of elastomeric, biobased, nonisocyanate polyurethane from natural rubber

Five-Membered Cyclic Carbonates: Versatility for Applications in Organic Synthesis, Pharmaceutical, and Materials Sciences

This review presents the recent advances involving several applications of five-membered cyclic carbonates and derivatives. With more than 150 references, it covers the period from 2012 to 2020, with special emphasis on the use of five-membered cyclic carbonates as building blocks for organic synthesis and material elaboration. We demonstrate the application of cyclic carbonates in several important chemical transformations, such as decarboxylation, hydrogenation, and transesterification reactions, among others. The presence of cyclic carbonates in molecules with high biological potential is also displayed, together with the importance of these compounds in the preparation of materials such as urethanes, polyurethanes, and flame retardants.

Biobased Nonisocyanate Polyurethanes as Recyclable and Intrinsic Self-Healing Coating with Triple Healing Sites

Polymer coatings having high amounts of renewable carbon and self-healing properties are highly sought after in a sustainability perspective. We report here the development of bio-/CO₂-derived nonisocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) coatings which are recyclable and healable via three different types of healing mechanisms. These NIPUs contain furan rings in their main chain which after cross-linking with bismaleimides form organogels having a thermo-reversible sol-gel transition and solvent-borne coatings with improved properties. Judicial selection of the bismaleimide cross-linker structure enabled us to produce recyclable and intrinsic healable coatings mediated by heat (thermo-healing), moisture (moisture-healing), and, more interestingly, dry conditions at room temperature (self-healing). The intrinsic moisture-healing property of NIPU-based coatings is unprecedented and is mainly due to the presence of hydroxyl functionalities in the NIPU structure. The uniqueness of these cross-linked biobased NIPU as recyclable coatings having triple healing sites present in their structure gives these materials potential for sustainable and functional applications.

Polymers Based on Cyclic Carbonates as Trait d'Union Between Polymer Chemistry and Sustainable CO2 Utilization

Given the large amount of anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, it is advantageous to use CO₂ as feedstock for the fabrication of everyday products, such as fuels and materials. An attractive way to use CO₂ in the synthesis of polymers is by the formation of five-membered cyclic organic carbonate monomers (5CCs). The sustainability of this synthetic approach is increased by using scaffolds prepared from renewable resources. Indeed, recent years have seen the rise of various types of carbonate syntheses and applications. 5CC monomers are often polymerized with diamines to yield polyhydroxyurethanes (PHU). Foams are developed from this type of polymers; moreover, the additional hydroxyl groups in PHU, absent in classical polyurethanes, lead to coatings with excellent adhesive properties. Furthermore, carbonate groups in polymers offer the possibility of post-functionalization, such as curing reactions under mild conditions. Finally, the polarity of carbonate groups is remarkably high, so polymers with carbonates side-chains can be used as polymer electrolytes in batteries or as conductive membranes. The target of this Review is to highlight the multiple opportunities offered by polymers prepared from and/or containing 5CCs. Firstly, the preparation of several classes of 5CCs is discussed with special focus on the sustainability of the synthetic routes. Thereafter, specific classes of polymers are discussed for which the use and/or presence of carbonate moieties is crucial to impart the targeted properties (foams, adhesives, polymers for energy applications, and other functional materials).

Using High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry to Identify Organic Contaminants Linked to Urban Stormwater Mortality Syndrome in Coho Salmon

Urban stormwater is a major threat to ecological health, causing a range of adverse, mostly sublethal effects. In western North America, urban runoff is acutely lethal to adult coho salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch) that spawn each fall in freshwater creeks. Although the mortality syndrome is correlated to urbanization and attributed to road runoff contaminant(s), the causal agent(s) remain unknown. We applied high-resolution mass spectrometry to isolate a coho mortality chemical signature: a list of nontarget and identified features that co-occurred in waters lethal to coho spawners (road runoff from controlled exposures and urban receiving waters from two field observations of symptomatic coho). Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that tire wear particle (TWP) leachates were most chemically similar to the waters with observed toxicity, relative to other vehicle-derived sources. Prominent road runoff contaminants in the signature included two groups of nitrogen-containing compounds derived from TWP, polyethylene glycols, octylphenol ethoxylates, and polypropylene glycols. A (methoxymethyl)melamine compound family, previously unreported in North America, was detected in road runoff and urban creeks at concentrations up to ∼9 and ∼0.3 μg/L, respectively. The results indicate TWPs are an under-appreciated contaminant source in urban watersheds and should be prioritized for fate and toxicity assessment.

Novel high reactive bifunctional five- and six-membered bicyclic dicarbonate – synthesis and characterisation

Five- and six-membered bicyclic carbonates are valuable raw materials for the synthesis of environmentally friendly polymers, such as polycarbonates or non-isocyanate poly(hydroxyurethane)s. However, bicyclic diglycerol dicarbonates bearing five-membered and six-membered rings have been never reported before. In this work, for the first time, we report a simple procedure for the synthesis of this monomer from commercially available diglycerol. The product was characterised by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. Next, the reactivity of the obtained bicyclic carbonate was investigated. The obtained diglycerol dicarbonate was used as a monomer for polycarbonate and non-isocyanate poly(hydroxyurethane) based on putrescine. In the homopolymerisation reaction the opening of the six-membered carbonate ring was observed, while in the polycondensation with diamine both carbonate rings open nonselectively.

The synthesis of novel, bifunctional diglycerol dicarbonate bearing a five-membered and six-membered cyclic carbonate group is presented.
