Abstract
The crosslinking of the polymer matrix with compatible macromolecules results in a three-dimensional network structure that offers an enhancement in the controlled release properties of the material. In this sense, this work aimed to improve the release profile of mefenamic acid (MAC) through crosslinking strategies. κ-Carrageenan/sericin crosslinked blend was obtained by covalent and thermal crosslinking and the different formulations were characterized. The gastroresistant potential and release profile were evaluated in the dissolution assay. The effect and characterization of the particles were investigated. Multiple units presented high entrapment efficiency (94.11-104.25), high drug loading (36.50-47.50 %) and adequate particle size (1.34-1.57 mm) with rough surface and visually spherical shape. The Weibull model showed that drug release occurred by relaxation, erosion and Fickian diffusion. Material stability and absence of MAC -polymer interactions were demonstrated by FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis. DSC showed a stable character of MAC in the drug-loaded beads. Moreover, the application studies of κ-Car/Ser/carboxymethylcellulose in the in vitro intestine mode showed that the crosslinked blend increased cell viability (>85 %), while free MAC exhibited a cytotoxic effect. Finally, the crosslinked k-Car/Ser blend MAC -loaded showed promising properties of a sustained release form of anti-inflammatory drug.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a natural and multiparticulate carrier of k-carrageenan (k-Car) and sericin (Ser) for encapsulation of indomethacin (IND) in order to minimize gastrointestinal effects caused by immediate-release. Increasing the amount of IND in the formulations subtly reduced the entrapment efficiency (EE) and drug loading (DL) due to matrix saturation. Sericin was essential to improve EE and DL when compared to pure k-Car (EE > 90 % and DL > 47 %) with suitable particle sizes (1.3461 ± 0.1891-1.7213 ± 0.1586 mm). The incorporation and integrity of IND in the particles were confirmed by analytical techniques of HPLC, XRD, FTIR, and SEM. Additionally, the k-Car/Ser matrix was pH-responsive with low IND release at pH 1.2 and extended-release at pH 6.8. The Weibull model had an adequate fit to the experimental data with R2aju 0.950.99 and AIC 82.4-24.9, with curves in parabolic profile (b < 1) and indicative of a controlled drug-release mechanism by diffusion. Besides, k-Car/Ser/IND and placebo were not cytotoxic (cell viability > 85 % at 150-600 μM) for the Caco-2 cell line. Therefore, the polymeric matrix is gastro-resistant, stable, and biocompatible to carry indomethacin and deliver it to the intestinal environment.

Abstract
AbstractSericin has been used in functional and potentially biodegradable materials for cosmetics, biomedical, agricultural, and food applications. It is a natural polymer with applications in absorbent materials, such as hydrogels, because of its hydrophilic character. However, sericin by itself is brittle, and in contact with water has low structural stability, being necessary its blending with other polymers or the application of crosslinking processes. In this work, hydrogel films were prepared from different mixtures containing sericin (SS), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), using a simple and environmentally friendly method consisting of a gelling process followed by solvent casting. A mixture design was applied to assess the incidence of each component and its interaction with the output variables of interest. Two response variables were evaluated in each formulation: water absorption capacity (WA) and gel fraction (GF). It was also possible to model the output variables based on the proportions of the sample components. In addition, a set of formulations were used to produce hydrogels with high water absorption rates while maintaining their structural stability. The optimal hydrogel formulation (HF) was structurally and thermally characterized by FTIR and TGA, respectively. Hydrogel morphology was also studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of this study constitute an important contribution to the design of novel processing routes to extend the use of silk sericin in the development of new materials.

Abstract
Soft tissue injury is very common and associated with pain, tissue swelling and even malformation if not treated on time. Treating methods include cryotherapy, electrical therapy, ultrasound therapy and anti-inflammatory drug, but none of them is completely satisfying. In this work, for a better therapeutic effect, drug therapy and pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy were combined. We constructed a drug delivery system using the tetra-PEG/agar hydrogel (PA). By incorporating Fe3O4 NPs into the hydrogel network, a magnetism-responsive property was achieved in the system. The cytotoxicity and in vivo study showed a good biocompatibility of the PA/Fe3O4 hydrogel. A magnetism-controlled release was attained by the incorporation of Fe3O4. Finally, in vivo study showed a better performance of the DS-loaded PA/Fe3O4 compared with the commercially available DS ointment regarding the recovery of the injured soft tissue. Therefore, this magnetism-responsive hydrogel may represent a promising alternative to treat soft tissue injury.

Abstract
Hydrogels-based systems (HBSs) for drug delivery are nowadays extensively used and the interest in modeling their behavior is dramatically increasing. In this review a critical overview on the modeling approaches is given, quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing the publications on the subject, the trend of the publications per year and the type of modeling approaches. It was found that, despite the drug release fitting models (i.e. Higuchi's equation) are the most abundant, their use for HBSs is decreasing in the last years and luckily, considering the limiting assumption on which they were built, they will be confined to simple mathematical fitting equations. Within the mechanistic models the "multi-component" with the swelling approximation (mass transport only) and with the mechanics (fully coupled) are experiencing the highest growth rate, with much more interest toward the last one that, in the next years could be able to provide a first principles model. Statistical models, especially based on the response surface methodology, are rapidly spreading in the scientific community mainly thanks to their ability to be predictive, regardless of the phenomenology, in the analyzed design space with very low efforts. Neural Networks models for HBSs, in countertrend with their use in the pharmaceutical industry, have never take off preferring less data demanding statistical models.

Abstract
Enhanced drug releases in a timely manner during urgent medical treatments would significantly enhance the prognosis of patients. Inspired by the facilitated molecular transports by the potentials, an enhanced drug release strategy driven by mechanical disturbances that widely exist in medical treatment processes is proposed. This strategy is enabled by a functional material comprised of multilayers of dendrimers as the drug reservoir, which are built on a piezoelectric-dielectric flexible film with reduced graphene oxide fillers. The generated voltages are higher and last longer than that in regular piezoelectric films. Photochemical crosslinking leads to a stable drug matrix which is even sustained in electric fields and high ionic strengths. The device enhances releases of positively, negatively, and zwitterionically charged molecules in response to mechanical stimuli and supports high cell viabilities. An illustrative application is demonstrated by preparing the material on the surface of a gastric lavage tube. The results show that the release of antiemetic drug increased by 200% within 60 min in response to forces mimicking human swallowing. This study contributes an integrative material that can realize electrically triggered releases that are previously only realized using complicated electrochemical setups. It is believed that this material can facilitate medicine applications in various emergent situations.

Abstract
In this study, particles produced from sericin-alginate blend were used as non-conventional bioadsorbent for removing Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Besides chromium mitigation, the use of sericin-alginate particles as bioadsorbent aims to offer an environmental solution of added value for sericin, which is a by-product from silk industry. Sericin-alginate particles in natura and loaded with Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were characterized using N2 physical adsorption analysis, optical microcopy, mercury porosimetry, helium pycnometry, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction. Kinetic studies on the removal of Cr(III) (at pH = 3.5) and Cr(VI) (at pH = 2) indicate the ion exchange mechanism with Ca(II) and the predominance of external mass transfer resistance. Cr(VI) uptake occurs through an adsorption-coupled reduction process, and bioadsorption equilibrium is reached after ~ 1000 min. Cr(III) bioadsorption occurs faster (~ 210 min). The Cr(VI) bioadsorption is endothermic, as bioadsorption capacity increases with temperature: 0.0783 mmol/g (20 °C), 0.1960 mmol/g (30 °C), 0.4570 mmol/g (40 °C), and 0.7577 mmol/g (55 °C). The three-parameter isotherm model of Tóth best represents the equilibrium data of total chromium. From Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum bioadsorption capacity is higher for total chromium, 0.25 mmol/g (30 °C), than for trivalent chromium, 0.023 mmol/g (30 °C). The comparison of bioadsorption capacities with different biomaterials confirms sericin-alginate particles as potential bioadsorbent of chromium.
