The relationship between solubility and nucleating effect of organic nucleating agent in poly(L‐lactic acid)

Trace sorbitol-modified nano-silica: Towards nano-nucleation for poly(L-lactic acid)

Nucleating agents, especially those with small particle sizes, are preferred to boost the nucleation density and crystallinity of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) due to its weak crystallization capability. Organophilicly modified nanofillers hardly alter the nucleation and crystallinity of non-isothermally crystallized PLA. Herein, nano-silica adsorbed trace D-sorbitol (m-SiO2) as a heterogeneous nucleating agent was melt-mixed with poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), and the isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization behavior, as well as crystallization kinetics, were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that m-SiO2 was uniformly dispersed in the PLA matrix as 100-300 nm clusters. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) showed that the nucleation rate and density of the non-isothermally crystallized PLLA/m-SiO2 composites were significantly improved. Despite the fact that m-SiO2 does not raise the overall non-isothermal crystallization rate, the crystallization temperature and crystallinity of the PLLA/3%m-SiO2 composite increased from 97.2 °C and 6.8 % for neat PLLA to 108.2 °C and 48.6 % (10 °C/min cooling rate), respectively. The Avrami exponent n of isothermal crystallization remains unchanged, while the crystallization rate increases dramatically. Both isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization have increased activation energies. The heat deflection temperature increased from 59 °C of neat PLLA to 152 °C with a 50 % increase in impact strength.

Crystallization behaviors regulations and mechanical performances enhancement approaches of polylactic acid (PLA) biodegradable materials modified by organic nucleating agents

Polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted much attention because of its good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical properties. However, the slow crystallization rate of PLA during molding leads to its poor heat resistance, which limit its diffusion for many industrial applications. In this review, the relationship between PLA crystallization and its molecular structure and processing conditions is summarized. From the perspective of the regulation of PLA crystallization by organic nucleating agents, the research progress of organic micromolecule (e.g., esters, amides, and hydrazides), organic salt, supramolecular, and macromolecule nucleating agents on the crystallization behavior of PLA is mainly introduced. The nucleation mechanism of PLA is expounded by organic nucleating agents, and the effect of the interaction force between organic nucleating agents and PLA molecular chains on the crystallization behavior of PLA is analyzed. The effects of the crystallization behavior of PLA on its mechanical properties and heat resistance are discussed. It will provide a theoretical reference for the development and application of high-efficiency nucleating agents.

Insight on the effect of a piperonylic acid derivative on the crystallization process, melting behavior, thermal stability, optical and mechanical properties of poly(l-lactic acid)

A new piperonylic acid derivative (BPASD) was synthesized and evaluated as an organic nucleating agent for poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) via melt-crystallization; the other behaviors including cold-crystallization, melting process after crystallization, thermal stability in air atmosphere, and optical and mechanical properties of PLLA/BPASD samples were also investigated. The results of the melt-crystallization investigation showed that, in comparison to virgin PLLA, the BPASD could induce PLLA to crystallize in higher temperature region or at a faster cooling rate, suggesting that the BPASD as a heterogeneous nucleating agent could promote the crystallization of PLLA, but the melt-crystallization depended on the cooling rate, BPASD concentration, and the final melting temperature. With increasing of BPASD concentration, a shift to the lower temperature of cold-crystallization peak and decrease of crystallization enthalpy indicated that BPASD had an inhibition for the cold-crystallization of PLLA to some extent. The heating rate, crystallization temperature, the BPASD, and its concentration were critical factors to the melting process, and double-melting peaks appeared in heating were assigned to melting–recrystallization. Thermal decomposition behavior revealed that the addition of BPASD reduced the thermal stability of PLLA, but the interaction of PLLA and BPASD could prevent the decrease of the onset decomposition temperature. Further, the BPASD also decreased the light transmittance and elongation at the break of PLLA, but the tensile modulus and tensile strength of PLLA were enhanced.
