Metal-Coordinated Nanofiltration Membranes Constructed on Metal Ions Blended Support toward Enhanced Dye/Salt Separation and Antifouling Performances

Metal-phenol coordination is a widely used method to prepare nanofiltration membrane. However, the facile, controllable and scaled fabrication remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel strategy was developed to fabricate a loose nanofiltration membrane via integrating blending and interfacial coordination strategy. Specifically, iron acetylacetonate was firstly blended in Polyether sulfone (PES) substrate via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS), and then the loose selective layer was formed on the membrane surface with tannic acid (TA) crosslinking reaction with Fe3+. The surface properties, morphologies, permeability and selectivity of the membranes were carefully investigated. The introduction of TA improved the surface hydrophilicity and negative charge. Moreover, the thickness of top layer increased about from ~30 nm to 119 nm with the increase of TA assembly time. Under the optimum preparation condition, the membrane with assembly 3 h (PES/Fe-TA3h) showed pure water flux of 175.8 L·m−2·h−1, dye rejections of 97.7%, 97.1% and 95.0% for Congo red (CR), Methyl blue (MB) and Eriochrome Black T (EBT), along with a salt penetration rate of 93.8%, 95.1%, 97.4% and 98.1% for Na2SO4, MgSO4, NaCl and MgCl2 at 0.2 MPa, respectively. Both static adhesion tests and dynamic fouling experiments implied that the TA modified membranes showed significantly reduced adsorption and high FRR for the dye solutions separation. The PES/Fe-TA3h membrane exhibited high FRR of 90.3%, 87.5% and 81.6% for CR, EBT and MB in the fouling test, stable CR rejection (>97.2%) and NaCl permeation (>94.6%) in 24 h continuous filtration test. The combination of blending and interfacial coordination assembly method could be expected to be a universal way to fabricate the loose nanofiltration membrane for effective fractionation of dyes and salts in the saline textile wastewater.

Low-pressure highly permeable polyester loose nanofiltration membranes tailored by natural carbohydrates for effective dye/salt fractionation

With the continuous pressure of water contamination caused by textile industry, loose nanofiltration (LNF) membranes prepared by green materials with an extraordinary water permeability are highly desirable for the recovery and purification of dyes and salts. In this work, low-pressure LNF membranes with ultrahigh permeability were fabricated via one-step interfacial polymerization (IP), in which inexpensive natural carbohydrate-derived sugars with large size and low reactivity were utilized as aqueous monomers to design selective layer. A systematic characterization by chemical analysis and optical microscopy demonstrated that the formed polyester film features not only loosen the structure, but also results in a hydrophilic and negatively charged surface. The optimized sucrose-based membrane (Su0.6/TMC0.1) with an excellent water permeability of 52.4 LMH bar^-1 was found to have a high rejection of dyes and a high transmission of salts. In addition, the sugar-based membrane manifested an excellent anti-fouling performance and long-term stability. Furthermore, the non-optimized Gl0.6/TMC0.1 and Ra0.6/TMC0.1 membranes also shown a high water permeability, while maintaining a competitive dye/salt separation performance, which confirmed the universal applicability of the membrane design principle. Therefore, the proposed new strategy for preparing next-generation LNF membranes can contribute towards the textile wastewater treatment.

Fouling Prevention in Polymeric Membranes by Radiation Induced Graft Copolymerization

The application of membrane processes in various fields has now undergone accelerated developments, despite the presence of some hurdles impacting the process efficiency. Fouling is arguably the main hindrance for a wider implementation of polymeric membranes, particularly in pressure-driven membrane processes, causing higher costs of energy, operation, and maintenance. Radiation induced graft copolymerization (RIGC) is a powerful versatile technique for covalently imparting selected chemical functionalities to membranes' surfaces, providing a potential solution to fouling problems. This article aims to systematically review the progress in modifications of polymeric membranes by RIGC of polar monomers onto membranes using various low- and high-energy radiation sources (UV, plasma, γ-rays, and electron beam) for fouling prevention. The feasibility of the modification method with respect to physico-chemical and antifouling properties of the membrane is discussed. Furthermore, the major challenges to the modified membranes in terms of sustainability are outlined and the future research directions are also highlighted. It is expected that this review would attract the attention of membrane developers, users, researchers, and scientists to appreciate the merits of using RIGC for modifying polymeric membranes to mitigate the fouling issue, increase membrane lifespan, and enhance the membrane system efficiency.

Selective capture of toxic anionic dyes of a novel prepared DMDAAC-grafted chitosan/genipin/cellulose hydrogel beads with antibacterial activity

Novel eco-friendly and green dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) grafted chitosan/genipin/cellulose hydrogel beads (CCBG-g-PDMDAAC), were fabricated as selective adsorbents for anionic dyes. The physical and chemical structural changes of the prepared hydrogels were evaluated by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TG-DSC analysis. Results showed CCBG-g-PDMDAAC efficiently and selectively adsorb anionic dyes (Reactive Red 195-RR195 and Methyl orange-MO) from mixture of dye solutions. Endowed chitosan-based hydrogels the advantage of acid insolubility and good adsorption. RR195 and MO adsorption process were described better with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1333.52 and 190.48 mg/g, respectively, indicating that monolayer chemisorption controlled the sorption process. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibited nice reusability and against S. aureus and E. coli. The hydrogels are promising for the potential application in wastewater treatment and antibacterial simultaneously.

Construction of Loose Positively Charged NF Membrane by Layer-by-Layer Grafting of Polyphenol and Polyethyleneimine on the PES/Fe Substrate for Dye/Salt Separation

The effective separation of dyes and inorganic salts is highly desirable for recycling inorganic salts and water resource in printing and dyeing wastewater treatment. In this work, tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were grafted on the PES/Fe ultrafiltration membrane via the coordination assembly and Michael addition strategy to fabricated a loose nanofiltration membrane (LNM). The effect of PEI concentration on membrane morphologies and properties was systematically investigated. The membrane surface becomes more hydrophilic and transforms into positive charge after the PEI grafting. The optimized PES/Fe-TA-PEI membrane possesses high pure water flux (124.6 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹) and excellent dye rejections (98.5%, 99.8%, 98.4%, and 86.4% for Congo red, Eriochrome black T, Alcian blue 8GX, and Bromophenol blue, respectively) under 2 bar operation pressure. Meanwhile, the LNM showed a high Alcian blue 8GX rejection (>98.4%) and low NaCl rejection (<5.3%) for the dye/salt mixed solutions separation. Moreover, the PES/Fe-TA-PEI LNM exhibited good antifouling performance and long-term performance stability. These results reveal that such LNM shows great potential for effective fractionation of dyes and salts and recycling of textile wastewater.

Emerging pollutants-Part II: Treatment

Emerging pollutants (EPs) refer to a class of pollutants, which are emerging in the environment or recently attracted attention. EPs mainly include pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). EPs have potential threats to human health and ecological environment. In recent years, the continuous detections of EPs in surface and ground water have brought huge challenges to water treatment and also made the treatment of EPs become an international research hotspot. This paper summarizes some research results on EPs treatment published in 2019. This paper may be helpful to understand the current situations and development trends of EP treatment technologies.
