Abstract
Corrosion of steel in the marine environment greatly reduces their service life. Polymeric coatings are the most popular anticorrosion technology, but seawater penetration cannot be prohibited because of the distinct stacking structure of the macromolecular chains. In this context, a novel anticorrosive hyperbranched polyurethane-based coating with dopamine (DOPA) at the terminals is prepared herein. The built-in DOPA is able to capture the iron ions released from the corroded substrate and form DOPA-Fe3+ complexation, which further cooperates with the surrounding seawater and imparts self-passivation, self-delivery and self-healing capabilities to the coating. Under the joint action of these measures, the corrosion of tinplate (serving as the steel model) is reduced to a record-low level (corrosion current = 1 × 10-9 A cm-2, corrosion rate = 1 × 10-5 mm year-1). Conceptually, the present dynamic active anticorrosion strategy greatly outperforms the traditional static passive approach, and turns the unfavorable but unavoidable seawater into a favorable factor, which paves the way for the development of long-lasting marine coatings.

Abstract
Hydrogels have emerged as powerful building blocks to develop various soft bioelectronics because of their tissue-like mechanical properties, superior bio-compatibility, the ability to conduct both electrons and ions, and multiple stimuli-responsiveness. However, hydrogels are vulnerable to mechanical damage, which limits their usage in developing durable hydrogel-based bioelectronics. Self-healing hydrogels aim to endow bioelectronics with the property of repairing specific functions after mechanical failure, thus improving their durability, reliability, and longevity. This review discusses recent advances in self-healing hydrogels, from the self-healing mechanisms, material chemistry, and strategies for multiple properties improvement of hydrogel materials, to the design, fabrication, and applications of various hydrogel-based bioelectronics, including wearable physical and biochemical sensors, supercapacitors, flexible display devices, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), implantable bioelectronics, etc. Furthermore, the persisting challenges hampering the development of self-healing hydrogel bioelectronics and their prospects are proposed. This review is expected to expedite the research and applications of self-healing hydrogels for various self-healing bioelectronics.

Self-Healing, Solvent-Free, Anti-Corrosion Coating Based on Skin-like Polyurethane/Carbon Nanotubes Composites with Real-Time Damage Monitoring. NANOMATERIALS (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 13:124. [PMID: 36616033 PMCID: PMC9823577 DOI: 10.3390/nano13010124] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/24/2022] [Revised: 12/01/2022] [Accepted: 12/12/2022] [Indexed: 06/17/2023]
Abstract
Self-healing anti-corrosion materials are widely regarded as a promising long-term corrosion protection strategy, and this is even more significant if the damage can be monitored in real-time and consequently repaired. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of human skin, self-healing, solvent-free polyurethane/carbon nanotubes composites (SFPUHE-HTF-CNTs) with a skin-like bilayer structure were constructed. The SFPUHE-HTF-CNTs were composed of two layers, namely, a hydrophobic solvent-free polyurethane (SFPUHE-HTF) containing disulfide bonds and fluorinated polysiloxane chain segments consisting of a self-healing layer and CNTs with good electrical conductivity consisting of a corrosion protection layer, which also allowed for the real-time monitoring of damage. The results of corrosion protection experiments indicated that the SFPUHE-HTF-CNTs had a low corrosion current density (8.94 × 10-9 A·cm-2), a positive corrosion potential (-0.38 V), and a high impedance modulus (|Z| = 4.79 × 105 Ω·cm2). The impedance modulus could still reach 4.54 × 104 Ω·cm2 after self-healing, showing excellent self-healing properties for anti-corrosion protection. Synchronously, the SFPUHE-HTF-CNTs exhibited a satisfactory damage sensing performance, enabling the real-time monitoring of fractures at different sizes. This work realized the effective combination of self-healing with corrosion protection and damage detection functions through a bionic design, and revealed the green, and low-cost preparation of advanced composites, which have the advantage of scale production.

Abstract
This paper provides a synthetic and comprehensive overview on environmentally friendly anticorrosive polymeric coatings. Firstly, the economic and environmental impact of corrosion is presented to highlight the need of anticorrosive polymeric coatings as a flexible and effective solution to protect a metal. Secondly, the implementation of regulations together with the consumer awareness for environmental considerations and protection of health are the driving force for a progressive but significant change in the sector. Therefore, within the protective organic coatings market, this article provides a review of the most recent developments in environmentally friendly solutions, including bio-based and water-borne epoxy, hyperbranched polyester for low- volatile organic compounds (VOC) coatings, waterborne polyurethane and non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs), and graphene or bio-based fillers for acrylics. Moreover, this paper outlines new trends such as smart additives, bio-based corrosion inhibitors, and functional antibiocorrosive coatings as superhydrophobics. Finally, industrially relevant applications of environmentally friendly anticorrosive polymeric coatings including solutions for marine and off-shore industries are summarized.
