Comprehensive Review of Recent Research Advances on Flame-Retardant Coatings for Building Materials: Chemical Ingredients, Micromorphology, and Processing Techniques

Developing fire-retardant building materials is vital in reducing fire loss. The design and preparation of novel fire-retardant coatings merely require the adhesion of flame retardants with high fire-retardant characteristics on the surface, which is significantly more economical than adding excessive amounts of flame retardants into bulk building materials. Meanwhile, fire-retardant coating has excellent performance because it can block the self-sustaining mechanisms of heat and mass transfer over combustion interfaces. In recent years, research of fire-retardant coatings for building materials has been subject to rapid development, and a variety of novel environmentally benign fire-retardant coatings have been reported. Nonetheless, as the surface characteristics of various flammable building materials are contrastively different, selecting chemical ingredients and controlling the physical morphology of fire-retardant coatings for specific building materials is rather complicated. Thus, it is urgent to review the ideas and preparation methods for new fire-retardant coatings. This paper summarizes the latest research progress of fire-retardant building materials, focusing on the compositions and performances of fire-retardant coatings, as well as the principles of their bottom-up design and preparation methods on the surface of building materials.

Surface Modification of Magnesium Oxysulfate Whisker Based on SiO2@silane Coupling Agent and SiO2@polydopamine Double-Layer Structure for Reinforcing HDPE

In this study, we fabricated high-performance polyethylene composites by constructing SiO₂@silane coupling agent (γ-methylacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane) and SiO₂@polydopamine (PDA) double-layer structures on a magnesium oxysulfate whisker surface. In addition to realizing strong mechanical properties, the flame-retardant properties of the composites were effectively improved. Further increase in the initial crystallization temperature of the modified composites indicated that the dispersion of whisker in the matrix was improved. The drag effect of the modified whisker on the HDPE molecular chain was characterized by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and the morphology of the impact-fractured surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); both confirmed the improved compatibility between the whisker and the matrix. The tensile strength of HDPE/MOSw@SiO₂@KH570 and HDPE/MOSw@SiO₂@PDA composites were 22.6% and 41.5% higher than that of the HDPE/MOSw composites, respectively. The impact strengths of the HDPE/MOSw@SiO₂@KH570 and HDPE/MOSw@SiO₂@PDA composites were 129% and 102% higher than that of the HDPE/MOSw composites, respectively. A stable carbon-silicate layer constructed by a SiO₂@KH570 and SiO₂@PDA double-layer structure delayed the combustion process. As a result, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of HDPE/MOSw@SiO₂@KH570 and HDPE/MOSw@SiO₂@PDA composites increased from 22.5 to 22.9 and 23.5, respectively.

Bio-inspired deposition of electrochemically exfoliated graphene layers for electrical resistance heating applications

Electrochemically exfoliated graphene (eeG) layers possess a variety of potential applications, e.g. as susceptor material for contactless induction heating in dynamic electro-magnetic fields, and as flexible and transparent electrode or resistivity heating elements. Spray coating of eeG dispersions was investigated in detail as a simple and fast method to deposit both, thin conducting layers and ring structures on polycarbonate substrates. The spray coating process was examined by systematic variation of dispersion concentration and volume applied to heated substrates. Properties of the obtained layers were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy, SEM and Confocal Scanning Microscopy. Electrical conductivity of eeG ring structures was measured using micro-four-point measurements. Modification of eeG with poly(dopamine) and post-thermal treatment yields in the reduction of the oxidized graphene proportion, an increase in electrical conductivity, and mechanical stabilization of the deposited thin layers. The chemical composition of modified eeG layer was analyzed via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy pointing to the reductive behavior of poly(dopamine). Application oriented experiments demonstrate the direct electric current heating (Joule-Heating) effect of spray-coated eeG layers.
