Spinning the Future: The Convergence of Nanofiber Technologies and Yarn Fabrication

The rapid advancement in nanofiber technologies has revolutionized the domain of yarn materials, marking a significant leap in textile technology. This review dissects the nexus between cutting-edge nanofiber technologies and yarn manufacturing, aiming to illuminate the pathway toward engineering advanced textiles with unparalleled functionality. It first discusses the fundamentals of nanofiber assemblies and spinning techniques, primarily focusing on electrospinning, centrifugal spinning, and blow spinning. Additionally, the study delves into integrating nanofiber spinning technologies with traditional and modern yarn fabrication principles, elucidating the design principles that underlie the creation of yarns incorporating nanofibers. Twisting technologies are explored to examine how they can be optimized and adapted for incorporating nanofibers, thus enabling the production of innovative nanofiber-based yarns. Special attention is given to scalable strategies like centrifugal and blow spinning, which are spotlighted for their efficiency and scalability in fabricating nanofiber yarns. This review further analyses recently developed nanofiber yarn applications, including wearable sensors, biomedical devices, moisture management textiles, and energy harvesting and storage devices. We finally present a forward-looking perspective to address unresolved issues in nanofiber-based yarn technologies.

Recent advances in cellulose-based sustainable materials for wastewater treatment: An overview

Water pollution presents a significant challenge, impacting ecosystems and human health. The necessity for solutions to address water pollution arises from the critical need to preserve and protect the quality of water resources. Effective solutions are crucial to safeguarding ecosystems, human health, and ensuring sustainable access to clean water for current and future generations. Generally, cellulose and its derivatives are considered potential substrates for wastewater treatment. The various cellulose processing methods including acid, alkali, organic & inorganic components treatment, chemical treatment and spinning methods are highlighted. Additionally, we reviewed effective use of the cellulose derivatives (CD), including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nano-fibrils (CNFs), CNPs, and bacterial nano-cellulose (BNC) on waste water (WW) treatment. The various cellulose processing methods, including spinning, mechanical, chemical, and biological approaches are also highlighted. Additionally, cellulose-based materials, including adsorbents, membranes and hydrogels are critically discussed. The review also highlighted the mechanism of adsorption, kinetics, thermodynamics, and sorption isotherm studies of adsorbents. The review concluded that the cellulose-derived materials are effective substrates for removing heavy metals, dyes, pathogenic microorganisms, and other pollutants from WW. Similarly, cellulose based materials are used for flocculants and water filtration membranes. Cellulose composites are widely used in the separation of oil and water emulsions as well as in removing dyes from wastewater. Cellulose's natural hydrophilicity makes it easier for it to interact with water molecules, making it appropriate for use in water treatment processes. Furthermore, the materials derived from cellulose have wider application in WW treatment due to their inexhaustible sources, low energy consumption, cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and renewable nature.

Recent Advances in Cellulose-Based Hydrogels Prepared by Ionic Liquid-Based Processes

This review summarizes the recent advances in preparing cellulose hydrogels via ionic liquid-based processes and the applications of regenerated cellulose hydrogels/iongels in electrochemical materials, separation membranes, and 3D printing bioinks. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer, which has attracted great attention due to the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable materials. The sustainability of cellulose products also depends on the selection of the dissolution solvent. The current state of knowledge in cellulose preparation, performed by directly dissolving in ionic liquids and then regenerating in antisolvents, as described in this review, provides innovative ideas from the new findings presented in recent research papers and with the perspective of the current challenges.

Microcapsule functionalization enables rate-determining release from cellulose nonwovens for long-term performance

Functional textiles is a rapidly growing product segment in which sustained release of actives often plays a key role. Failure to sustain the release results in costs due to premature loss of functionality and resource inefficiency. Conventional application methods such as impregnation lead to an excessive and uncontrolled release, which - for biocidal actives - results in environmental pollution. In this study, microcapsules are presented as a means of extending the release from textile materials. The hydrophobic model substance pyrene is encapsulated in poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) microcapsules which subsequently are loaded into cellulose nonwovens using a solution blowing technique. The release of encapsulated pyrene is compared to that of two conventional functionalization methods: surface and bulk impregnation. The apparent diffusion coefficient is 100 times lower for encapsulated pyrene compared to impregnated pyrene. This clearly demonstrates the rate-limiting barrier properties added by the microcapsules, extending the potential functionality from hours to weeks.

Cellulose-Based Nanofibers Processing Techniques and Methods Based on Bottom-Up Approach-A Review

In the past decades, cellulose (one of the most important natural polymers), in the form of nanofibers, has received special attention. The nanofibrous morphology may provide exceptional properties to materials due to the high aspect ratio and dimensions in the nanometer range of the nanofibers. The first feature may lead to important consequences in mechanical behavior if there exists a particular orientation of fibers. On the other hand, nano-sizes provide a high surface-to-volume ratio, which can have important consequences on many properties, such as the wettability. There are two basic approaches for cellulose nanofibers preparation. The top-down approach implies the isolation/extraction of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and nanocrystals (CNCs) from a variety of natural resources, whereby dimensions of isolates are limited by the source of cellulose and extraction procedures. The bottom-up approach can be considered in this context as the production of nanofibers using various spinning techniques, resulting in nonwoven mats or filaments. During the spinning, depending on the method and processing conditions, good control of the resulting nanofibers dimensions and, consequently, the properties of the produced materials, is possible. Pulp, cotton, and already isolated CNFs/CNCs may be used as precursors for spinning, alongside cellulose derivatives, namely esters and ethers. This review focuses on various spinning techniques to produce submicrometric fibers comprised of cellulose and cellulose derivatives. The spinning of cellulose requires the preparation of spinning solutions; therefore, an overview of various solvents is presented showing their influence on spinnability and resulting properties of nanofibers. In addition, it is shown how bottom-up spinning techniques can be used for recycling cellulose waste into new materials with added value. The application of produced cellulose fibers in various fields is also highlighted, ranging from drug delivery systems, high-strength nonwovens and filaments, filtration membranes, to biomedical scaffolds.

Circulatory Management of Polymer Waste: Recycling into Fine Fibers and Their Applications

In modern society, it is impossible to imagine life without polymeric materials. However, managing the waste composed of these materials is one of the most significant environmental issues confronting us in the present day. Recycling polymeric waste is the most important action currently available to reduce environmental impacts worldwide and is one of the most dynamic areas in industry today. Utilizing this waste could not only benefit the environment but also promote sustainable development and circular economy management. In its program statement, the European Union has committed to support the use of sorted polymeric waste. This study reviews recent attempts to recycle this waste and convert it by alternative technologies into fine, nano-, and microscale fibers using electrospinning, blowing, melt, or centrifugal spinning. This review provides information regarding applying reprocessed fine fibers in various areas and a concrete approach to mitigate the threat of pollution caused by polymeric materials.

Drug-Eluting Medical Textiles: From Fiber Production and Textile Fabrication to Drug Loading and Delivery

Drug-eluting medical textiles have recently gained great attention to be used in different applications due to their cost effectiveness and unique physical and chemical properties. Using various fiber production and textile fabrication technologies, fibrous constructs with the required properties for the target drug delivery systems can be designed and fabricated. This review summarizes the current advances in the fabrication of drug-eluting medical textiles. Different fiber production methods such as melt-, wet-, and electro-spinning, and textile fabrication techniques such as knitting and weaving are explained. Moreover, various loading processes of bioactive agents to obtain drug-loaded fibrous structures with required physicochemical and morphological properties, drug delivery mechanisms, and drug release kinetics are discussed. Finally, the current applications of drug-eluting fibrous systems in wound care, tissue engineering, and transdermal drug delivery are highlighted.

A solution blown superporous nonwoven hydrogel based on hydroxypropyl cellulose

A superporous hydrogel - in which the interconnecting fibres themselves are hydrogels - based on hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) has been produced using the nonwoven solution blown technique. The nonwoven fibres were subsequently thermally crosslinked with citric acid as identified by esterbond formation using FT-IR spectroscopy. The gel fraction was approximately 70%. The superporous HPC hydrogel exhibited a very fast water absorption, reaching an equilibrium absorption (80% water content) within 30 seconds. The equilibrium absorption was strongly codependent on both the fibre thickness and the pore size whereas the absorption rate was correlated with the pore size as established using standard linearized regression analysis.
