Controlled aggregation of amphiphilic aggregation‐induced emission polycation and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as fluorescence/magnetic resonance imaging probes

Multi-Stimuli-Responsive Water-Dispersible Magnetite Nanoparticles Using Arylazopyrazole-Modified Polymer Ligands

In order to design new nanomaterials with improved functionalities, magnetite nanoparticles (MNP) modified with arylazopyrazole (AAP) molecular photoswitches are presented. Water dispersibility is achieved by using poly(acrylic acid) (pAA) as a multidentate ligand, which is modified with AAP by amide coupling. The polymer ligand stabilizes the MNP, allows for E-Z isomerization of the photoswitch, and provides pH responsiveness. Three different AAP are synthesized and attached to pAA via amide coupling giving pAA-AAP with photoswitches substituted statistically along the hydrophilic polymer backbone. MNP are synthesized by coprecipitation and pAA-AAP is introduced as a stabilizing agent in situ. Photoisomerization of pAA-AAP and pAA-AAP@MNP is investigated showing good photostationary states and cyclability. The MNP can be assembled and dispersed reversibly in water either by applying a magnetic field or by a change in pH.

Alkyl Chain Appended Fe(III) Catecholate Complex as a Dual-Modal T1 MRI-NIR Fluorescence Imaging Agent via Second Sphere Water Interactions

The C₁₂-alkyl chain-conjugated Fe(III) catecholate complex [Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃]^3-, Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃ [C₁₂CAT = N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl)dodecanamide], was synthesized and characterized, reported as a dual-modal T₁-MRI and an optical imaging probe. The DFT-optimized structure of Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃ reveals a distorted octahedral coordination geometry around the high spin Fe(III) center. The formation constant (-log K) of Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃ was calculated as 45.4. The complex exhibited r₁-relaxivity values of 2.31 ± 0.12 and 1.52 ± 0.06 mM^-1 s^-1 at 25 and 37 °C, respectively, on 1.41 T at pH 7.3 via second-sphere water interactions. The interaction of Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃ with human serum albumin showed concomitant enhancement of r₁-relaxivity to 6.44 ± 0.15 mM^-1 s^-1. The MR phantom images are significantly brighter and directly correlate to the concentration of Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃. Adding an external fluorescent marker IR780 dye to Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃ leads to the formation of self-assembly by C₁₂-alkyl chains. It resulted in the fluorescence quenching of the dye, and its critical aggregation concentration was calculated as 70 μM. The aggregated matrix of Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃ and IR780 dye is spherical, with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 189.5 nm. This self-assembled supramolecular system is found to be non-fluorescent and was "turn-on" under acidic pH via dissociation of aggregates. The r₁-relaxivity is found to be unchanged during the matrix aggregation and disaggregation. The probe showed MRI ON and fluorescent OFF under physiological conditions and MRI ON and fluorescent ON under acidic pH. The cell viability experiments showed that the cells are 80% viable at 1 mM probe concentration. Fluorescence experiments and MR phantom images showed that Fe(C₁₂CAT)₃ is a potential dual model imaging probe to visualize the acidic pH environment of the cells.

Patterning of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Gold and Magnetite Nanoparticles by Dip Pen Nanolithography

Nanoparticles offer unique physical and chemical properties. Dip pen nanolithography of nanoparticles enables versatile patterning and nanofabrication with potential application in electronics and sensing, but is not well studied yet. Herein, the patterned deposition of various nanoparticles onto unmodified silicon substrates is presented. It is shown that aqueous solutions of hydrophilic citrate and cyclodextrin functionalized gold nanoparticles as well as poly(acrylic) acid decorated magnetite nanoparticles are feasible for writing nanostructures. Both smaller and larger nanoparticles can be patterned. Hydrophobic oleylamine or n-dodecylamine capped gold nanoparticles and oleic acid decorated magnetite nanoparticles are deposited from toluene. Tip loading is carried out by dip-coating, and writing succeeds fast within 0.1 s. Also, coating with longer tip dwell times, at different relative humidity and varying frequency are studied for deposition of nanoparticle clusters. The resulting feature size is between 300 and 1780 nm as determined by scanning electron microscopy. Atomic force microscopy confirms that the heights of the deposited structures correspond to a single or double layer of nanoparticles. Higher writing speeds lead to smaller line thicknesses, offering possibilities to more complex structures. Dip pen nanolithography can hence be used to pattern nanoparticles on silicon substrates independent of the surface chemistry.

Role of the Anilinium Ion on the Selective Polymerization of Anilinium 2-Acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate

The development of anilinium 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonate (Ani-AMPS) monomer, confirmed by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and FTIR, is systematically studied. Ani-AMPS contains two polymerizable functional groups, so it was submitted to selective polymerization either by free-radical or oxidative polymerization. Therefore, poly(anilinium 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic) [Poly(Ani-AMPS)] and polyaniline doped with 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid [PAni-AMPS] can be obtained. First, the acrylamide polymer, poly(Ani-AMPS), favored the π-stacking of the anilinium group produced by the inter- and intra-molecular interactions and was studied utilizing ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FTIR, and UV-Vis-NIR. Furthermore, poly(Ani-AMPS) fluorescence shows quenching in the presence of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in the emission spectrum at 347 nm. In contrast, the typical behavior of polyaniline is observed in the cyclic voltammetry analysis for PAni-AMPS. The optical properties also show a significant change at pH 4.4. The PAni-AMPS structure was corroborated through FTIR, while the thermal properties and morphology were analyzed utilizing TGA, DSC (except PAni-AMPS), and FESEM.
