Unique antimicrobial/thermally conductive polymer composites for use in medical electronic devices

Achieving High Thermal Conductivity and Satisfactory Insulating Properties of Elastomer Composites by Self-Assembling BN@GO Hybrids

With increasing heat accumulation in advanced modern electronic devices, dielectric materials with high thermal conductivity (λ) and excellent electrical insulation have attracted extensive attention in recent years. Inspired by mussel, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and graphene oxide (GO) are assembled to construct mhBN@GO hybrids with the assistance of poly(catechol-polyamine). Then, mhBN@GO hybrids are dispersed in carboxy nitrile rubber (XNBR) latex via emulsion coprecipitation to form elastomer composites with a high λ and satisfactory insulating properties. Thanks to the uniform dispersion of mhBN@GO hybrids, the continuous heat conduction pathways exert a significant effect on enhancing the λ and decreasing the interface thermal resistance of XNBR composites. In particular, the λ value of 30 vol% mhBN@GO/XNBR composite reaches 0.4348 W/(m·K), which is 2.7 times that of the neat XNBR (0.1623 W/(m·K)). Meanwhile, the insulating hBN platelets hinder the electron transfer between adjacent GO sheets, leading to satisfactory electrical insulation in XNBR composites, whose AC conductivity is as low as 10^-10 S/cm below 100 Hz. This strategy opens up new prospects in the assembly of ceramic and carbonaceous fillers to prepare dielectric elastomer composites with high λ and satisfactory electrical insulation, making them promising for modern electrical systems.

Well-Distributed Polysilsesquioxane-Modified Carbon Nanotubes for Thermal Conductive Insulating Silicone Rubbers

Despite carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have garnered tremendous research interests for enhancing the electrical and thermal conductivity of polymers, it is still a considerable challenge to achieve the uniform dispersion of carbon nanotubes in polymer matrix. Herein, inspired by the mussel-inspired chemistry, we adopted the strategy of coating CNTs with polydopamine. And the polysilsesquioxane-modified CNTs (CNTs-PSQ) were obtained based on the click chemistry reaction. The FT-IR, Raman, XRD, and TGA collectively demonstrated the successful modification of PSQ on the surface of CNTs. The incorporation of PSQ could significantly improve the dispersion of CNTs in the silicon rubbers, and a strong interfacial interaction was formed between CNTs-PSQ and silicon rubber matrix, as observed from TEM images of silicon rubber/CNTs-PSQ nanocomposites. Meanwhile, compared with the nanocomposites with neat CNTs, the ones with CNTs-PSQ exhibited simultaneously improved electrical conductivity and insulating performance. This strategy proposed for the preparation of PSQ-modified CNTs provides insights toward highly insulating and thermal conducting polymers.

Improving the Antimicrobial and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Resins via Nanomodification: An Overview

The main purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive overview on the preparation of multifunctional epoxies, with improved antimicrobial activity and enhanced mechanical properties through nanomodification. In the first section, we focus on the approaches to achieve antimicrobial activity, as well as on the methods used to evaluate their efficacy against bacteria and fungi. Relevant application examples are also discussed, with particular reference to antifouling and anticorrosion coatings for marine environments, dental applications, antimicrobial fibers and fabrics, and others. Subsequently, we discuss the mechanical behaviors of nanomodified epoxies with improved antimicrobial properties, analyzing the typical damage mechanisms leading to the significant toughening effect of nanomodification. Some examples of mechanical properties of nanomodified polymers are provided. Eventually, the possibility of achieving, at the same time, antimicrobial and mechanical improvement capabilities by nanomodification with nanoclay is discussed, with reference to both nanomodified epoxies and glass/epoxy composite laminates. According to the literature, a nanomodified epoxy can successfully exhibit antibacterial properties, while increasing its fracture toughness, even though its tensile strength may decrease. As for laminates-obtaining antibacterial properties is not followed by improved interlaminar properties.
