Hydrogels of starch/carboxymethyl cellulose crosslinked with sodium trimetaphosphate via reactive extrusion

Green construction of self-floating polysaccharide-based hydrogels with catalytic activity for efficient organic pollutants reduction

This study employed an anionic heteropolysaccharide extracted from overgrown Enteromorpha and homopolysaccharide pullulan to fabricate a self-floating hydrogel by introducing bubble templates. Subsequently, green in-situ reduction and immobilization of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in the hydrogel were successfully achieved without additional reducing agents. The heteropolysaccharide from Enteromorpha provides carboxyl and sulfate groups for Ag+ ions complexation, which is beneficial for the in-situ reduction of Ag NPs and inhibits their aggregation. The incorporation of bubble templates facilitates the creation of a hierarchical pore structure in the hydrogel, giving it self-floating properties for easy recycling, while the hierarchical network with rich anchor sites ensuring adequate traction for Ag NPs dispersion and stabilization. By adjusting polysaccharide content and using bubble templates, Ag NPs smaller than 10 nm can be obtained. The composite hydrogel exhibits tunable catalytic activity and excellent degradation towards Rhodamine B, Methyl Orange, and 4-Nitrophenol, with the normalized rate constant (knor) of 78.89, 59.08, and 30.42 min-1 g-1, respectively. Notably, the reduction efficiency remained above 98 % after 6 recycles with little leaching of Ag NPs, benefiting from its self-floating ability for easy recovery in practical applications.

Justification of Starching Cotton and Aramid Yarns by Industrial and Laboratory Processes

The development and application of new types of fibres and their wider application influence the continuous invention of a more economical starching process, as one of the most expensive stages in the technological process of woven fabric production. For example, aramid fibres are increasingly used in clothing with effective protection from mechanical, thermal and abrasion exposure. Simultaneously, comfort and regulation of metabolic heat are extremely important, and this is achieved by using cotton woven fabrics. For such a woven fabrics to satisfy the protective properties and the possibility of all-day wear, fibre is needed, and thus a yarn, that will enable the efficient production of fine, light and comfortable protective woven fabrics. This paper investigates the influence of starching on the mechanical properties of aramid yarns and their comparison to cotton yarns of the same fineness. This will lead to knowledge about the efficiency and necessity of aramid yarn starching. The tests were carried out on an industrial and laboratory starching machine. According to the obtained results, the necessity and the improvement of the physical-mechanical properties of cotton and aramid yarns can be determined, both by industrial and laboratory starching. Finer yarn starched by the laboratory starching process achieves greater efficiency in the yarn's strength and resistance to wear, which indicates the need for starching aramid yarns, especially fineness 16.6 × 2 tex, but also finer ones.

A pH-sensitive hydrogel based on carboxymethylated konjac glucomannan crosslinked by sodium trimetaphosphate: Synthesis, characterization, swelling behavior and controlled drug release

The pH-sensitive hydrogel consisting of carboxymethylated konjac glucomannan (CMKGM) and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) was prepared for a potential intestinal targeted delivery system. Both the CMKGM and the CMKGM hydrogel were characterized by FT-IR spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The Congo red and atomic force microscope (AFM) results showed a coil-to-helix transition of CMKGM in alkaline conditions with the degree of substitution (DS) increased from 0.20 to 0.49. Rheological measurements indicated that the DS and the STMP content collectively influence the mechanical stiffness and swelling properties of the obtained hydrogels. In addition, the swelling behavior of the hydrogels revealed that they were sensitive to pH value changes and were following a Korsmeyer-Peppas gastrointestinal release behavior, indicating that the release was controlled by non-Fickian diffusion. Furthermore, all the results suggested that the prepared pH-sensitive hydrogel may serve as a potential biomaterial for the intestine-targeted delivery system.

Structural and mechanistic insights into starch microgel/anthocyanin complex assembly and controlled release performance

We report a self-assembly method for the fabrication of multilayer-starch-based microgels used for anthocyanin encapsulation. Alcohol-heating treatment and ionization reactions were employed to reduce the crystallinity of starch and introduce ionic groups on the molecule to further cross-link it with sodium trimetaphosphate and produce a starch microgel. The molecular interactions between the starch and the anthocyanins facilitated the anthocyanin encapsulation and the starch-microgel/anthocyanin complexes with one, two, and three self-assembled layers were obtained. The Lay-1 microgel exhibited an encapsulation efficiency of 50.1% when the anthocyanin concentration, cross-linking starch concentration, contact time, and temperature were 0.25 mg/mL, 1.5 mg/mL, 3 h, and 40 °C, respectively. An increase in the number of layers resulted in a more compact microgel structure with the zeta potential presenting variations upon structural changes. Furthermore, the encapsulated anthocyanins presented a slow release from Lay-1, while the multilayered microgels (Lay-2 and Lay-3) displayed outstanding encapsulation stability. This study gives an insight on the encapsulation and release of anthocyanins by starch microgels, and provides a novel strategy for the design of starch-based encapsulation materials presenting great stability.

A hydrogel sensor driven by sodium carboxymethyl starch with synergistic enhancement of toughness and conductivity

Conductive hydrogels are potential materials for fabricating wearable strain sensors owing to their excellent mechanical properties and high conductivity. However, it is a challenge to simultaneously enhance the mechanical properties and conductivity of hydrogels. Herein, a simple strategy was proposed for concurrently enhancing the mechanical properties and conductivity of the wearable hydrogel sensors by introducing carboxymethyl starch sodium (CMS). The introduction of CMS not only dramatically enhanced the mechanical performance of the hydrogel due to hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, but also improved the conductivity of the hydrogel owing to the existence of sodium ions. As a result, the hydrogel sensors with excellent durability and stability could repeatedly detect and distinguish various human activities, including walking, chewing and speaking. Meanwhile, multiple sensors are also assembled into a 3D sensor array for detecting the three-dimensional distribution of stress and strain. Moreover, the peaks of EMG signals and the waveforms of ECG signals could be recorded because the hydrogel sensor presented super sensitivity and fast response. Therefore, the multifunctional hydrogel presented remarkable potential for applications in human medical diagnosis, health monitoring and artificial intelligence.

Superabsorbent cellulose-based hydrogels cross-liked with borax

Cellulose, the most abundant biopolymer on Earth, has been widely attracted owing to availability, intoxicity, and biodegradability. Environmentally friendly hydrogels were successfully prepared from water hyacinth-extracted cellulose using a dissolution approach with sodium hydroxide and urea, and sodium tetraborate decahydrate (borax) was used to generate cross-linking between hydroxyl groups of cellulose chains. The incorporation of borax could provide the superabsorbent feature into the cellulose hydrogels. The uncross-linked cellulose hydrogels had a swelling ratio of 325%, while the swelling ratio of the cross-linked hydrogels could achieve ~ 900%. With increasing borax concentrations, gel fraction of the cross-linked hydrogels increased considerably. Borax also formed char on cellulose surfaces and generated water with direct contact with flame, resulting in flame ignition and propagation delay. Moreover, the cross-linked cellulose-based hydrogels showed antibacterial activity for gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus). The superabsorbent cross-linked cellulose-based hydrogels prepared in this work could possibly be used for wound dressing, agricultural, and flame retardant coating applications.
