Abstract
Herein, we report an electroreduction of unactivated alkyl alkenes enabled by [Fe]-H, which is provided through the combination of anodic iron salts and the silane generated in situ via cathodic reduction, using H2O as an H-source. The catalytic amounts of Si-additive work as an H-carrier from H2O to generate a highly active silane species in situ under continuous electrochemical conditions. This approach shows a broad substrate scope and good functional group compatibility. In addition to hydrogenation, the use of D2O instead of H2O provides the desired deuterated products in good yields with excellent D-incorporation (up to >99%). Further late-stage hydrogenation of complex molecules and drug derivatives demonstrate potential application in the pharmaceutical industry. Mechanistic studies are performed and provide support for the proposed mechanistic pathway.

Abstract
The ambiphilic bicyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (Me/iPrBICAAC) upon reaction with [IrCl(COD)]2 smoothly afford mononuclear Ir(I) complexes that have been spectroscopically and structurally characterized. These complexes exhibit good catalytic activity for transfer hydrogenation (TH) of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde using isopropyl alcohol (iPrOH), with turnover frequency values ranging between 6269 and 8093 h-1. Choosing the covalent complex Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) as a catalyst, a wide array of carbonyls and imines functionalized with electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents have been surveyed and afforded their reduced products in moderate-to-good yields. No detachment of the BICAAC unit from the Ir center was observed upon prolonged heating of Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) in toluene-d8 or isopropyl alcohol-d8, which evidenced good thermal stability of the catalyst. Complex Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) was also found to be catalytically active for the hydrosilylation of a variety of aldehydes using triethylsilane (Et3SiH).

Abstract
Transfer hydrogenation reactions offer synthetically powerful strategies to deliver various hydrogenated compounds with the advantages of efficiency, atom economy, and practicability. On one hand, formic acid/formate function as promising hydrogen sources owing to their readily obtainable, inexpensive, and easy to handle nature. On the other hand, Cp*Ir complexes show high activities in transfer hydrogenation. This review highlights progress achieved for transfer hydrogenation of CO, CC, and CN bonds of a variety of unsaturated substrates, as well as amides focusing on Cp*Ir complexes as catalysts and formic acid/formate as hydrogen sources.

Abstract
The reaction between [IrCl(COD)]2 and dppe in a 1 : 2 ratio was investigated in detail under three different conditions. [IrCl(COD)(dppe)], 1, is formed at room temperature in the absence of base. In the presence of a strong base at room temperature, hydride complexes that retain the carbocyclic ligand in the coordination sphere are generated. In isopropanol, 1 is converted into [IrH(1,2,5,6-η2:η2-COD)(dppe)] (2) on addition of KOtBu, with k12 = (1.11 ± 0.02) × 10-4 s-1, followed by reversible isomerisation to [IrH(1-κ-4,5,6-η3-C8H12)(dppe)] (3) with k23 = (3.4 ± 0.2) × 10-4 s-1 and k32 = (1.1 ± 0.3) × 10-5 s-1 to yield an equilibrium 5 : 95 mixture of 2 and 3. However, when no hydride source is present in the strong base (KOtBu in benzene or toluene), the COD ligand in 1 is deprotonated, followed by β-H elimination of an IrI-C8H11 intermediate, which leads to complex [IrH(1-κ-4,5,6-η3-C8H10)(dppe)] (4) selectively. This is followed by its reversible isomerisation to 5, which features a different relative orientation of the same ligands (k45 = (3.92 ± 0.11) × 10-4 s-1; k5-4 = (1.39 ± 0.12) × 10-4 s-1 in C6D6), to yield an equilibrated 32 : 68 mixture of 4 and 5. DFT calculations assisted in the full rationalization of the selectivity and mechanism of the reactions, yielding thermodynamic (equilibrium) and kinetic (isomerization barriers) parameters in excellent agreement with the experimental values. Finally, in the presence of KOtBu and isopropanol at 80 °C, 1 is transformed selectively to K[IrH4(dppe)] (6), a salt of an anionic tetrahydride complex of IrIII. This product is also selectively generated from 2, 3, 4 and 5 and H2 at room temperature, but only when a strong base is present. These results provide an insight into the catalytic action of [IrCl(COD)(LL)] complexes in the hydrogenation of polar substrates in the presence of a base.

Abstract
Hantzsch esters (1,4-dihydropyridine dicarboxylates) have become, in this century, very versatile reagents for enantioselective organic transformations. They can act as hydride transfer agents to reduce, regioselectively, a variety of multiple bonds, e.g., C=C and C=N, under mild reaction conditions. They are excellent reagents for the dearomatization of heteroaromatic substances, and participate readily in cascade processes. In the last few years, they have also become useful reagents for photoredox reactions. They can participate as sacrificial electron and hydrogen donors and when 4-alkyl or 4-acyl-substituted, they can act as alkyl or acyl radical transfer agents. These last reactions may take place in the presence or absence of a photocatalyst. This review surveys the literature published in this area in the last five years.

Abstract
Both metal-catalyzed and organocatalytic transfer hydrogenation reactions are widely employed for the reduction of C=O and C=N bonds. However, selective transfer hydrogenation reactions of C=C bonds remain challenging. Therefore, the chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of olefins under mild conditions and in the absence of metal catalysts, using readily available and inexpensive reducing agents (i.e. primary and secondary alcohols), will mark a significant advancement towards the development of green transfer hydrogenation strategies. Described herein is an unconventional catalyst-free transfer hydrogenation reaction of activated alkenes using isopropanol as an eco-friendly reductant and solvent. The reaction gives convenient synthetic access to a wide range of substituted malonic acid half oxyesters (SMAHOs) in moderate to good yields. Mechanistic investigations point towards an unprecedented hydrogen bond-assisted transfer hydrogenation process.

Abstract
An asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of quinolines in water or biphasic systems was developed. This ATH reaction proceeds smoothly without the need for inert atmosphere protection in the presence of a water-soluble iridium catalyst, which bears an easily available aminobenzimidazole ligand. This ATH system can work at a catalyst loading of 0.001 mol % (S/C = 100 000, turnover number (TON) of up to 33 000) under mild reaction conditions. The turnover frequency (TOF) value can reach as high as 90 000 h-1. A variety of quinoline and N-heteroaryl compounds are transformed into the desired products in high yield and up to 99% enantiomeric excess (ee).

Abstract
A series of chiral complexes of the form Ir(NHC)2(aa)(H)(X) (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene, aa = chelated amino acid, X = halide) was synthesized by oxidative addition of α-amino acids to iridium(I) bis-NHC compounds and screened for asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones. Following optimization of the reaction conditions, NHC, and amino acid ligands, high enantioselectivity was achieved when employing the Ir(IMe)2(l-Pro)(H)(I) catalyst (IMe = 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene), which asymmetrically reduces a range of acetophenone derivatives in up to 95% enantiomeric excess.

Abstract
The asymmetric reduction of aromatic α-dehydroamino acid esters with water as the hydrogen source was developed by a Rh/Cu co-catalytic system. The reaction tolerates various functional groups, providing a valuable synthetic tool to access chiral α-amino acid esters readily. Moreover, the present methodology also was applied in the cost-effective and easy to handle preparation of chiral deuterated α-amino esters by using D2O.

Abstract
A novel armor-type composite of metal-organic framework (MOF)-encapsulated CoCu nanoparticles with a Fe3 O4 core (Fe3 O4 @SiO2 -NH2 -CoCu@UiO-66) has been designed and synthesized by the half-way injection method, which successfully serves as an efficient and recyclable catalyst for the selective transfer hydrogenation. In this half-way injection approach, the pre-synthetic Fe3 O4 @SiO2 -NH2 -CoCu was injected into the UiO-66 precursor solution halfway through the MOF budding period. The formed MOF armor could play a role of providing significant additional catalytic sites besides CoCu nanoparticles, protecting CoCu nanoparticles, and improving the catalyst stability, thus facilitating the selective transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzaldehydes into corresponding nitrobenzyl alcohols in high selectivity (99 %) and conversion (99 %) rather than nitro group reduction products. Notably, this method achieves the precise assembly of a MOF-encapsulated composite, and the ingenious combination of MOF and nanoparticles exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the selective hydrogen transfer reaction, implementing a "1+1>2" strategy in catalysis.

Abstract
The zinc salt-catalyzed reduction of α-aryl imino esters, diketones and phenylacetylenes with water as hydrogen source and zinc as reductant was successfully conducted. The presented method provides a low-cost, environmentally friendly and practical preparation of α-aryl amino esters, α-hydroxyketones and phenylethylenes. By using D2O as deuterium source, the corresponding products were obtained in high efficiency with excellent deuterium incorporation rate, which gives a cheap and safe tool for access to valuable deuterium-labelled compounds.

Abstract
The sulfone functional group has a strong capacity to direct the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of ketones in the presence of [(arene)Ru(TsDPEN)H] complexes by adopting a position distal to the η6 -arene ring. This preference provides a means for the prediction of the sense of asymmetric reduction. The sulfone group also facilitates the formation of a range of reduction substrates, and its ready removal provides a route to enantiomerically enriched alcohols that would otherwise be extremely difficult to prepare by direct ATH of the corresponding ketones.

Abstract
The reaction mechanism of the pH-dependent transfer hydrogenation of a ketone or the dehydrogenation of formic acid catalyzed by a [(η6-arene)RuCl(κ2-N,N-dmobpy)]+ complex in aqueous media has been investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The TM-catalyzed TH of ketones with formic acid as the hydrogen source proceeds via two steps: the formation of a metal hydride and the transfer of the hydride to the substrate ketone. The calculated results show that ruthenium hydride formation is the rate-determining step. This proceeds via an ion-pair mechanism with an energy barrier of 14.1 kcal mol−1. Interestingly, the dihydrogen release process of formic acid and the hydride transfer process that produces alcohols are competitive under different pH environments. The investigation explores the feasibility of the two pathways under different pH environments. Under acidic conditions (pH = 4), the free energy barrier of the dihydrogen release pathway is 4.5 kcal mol−1 that is higher than that of the hydride transfer pathway, suggesting that the hydride transfer pathway is more favorable than the dihydrogen release pathway. However, under strongly acidic conditions, the dihydrogen release pathway is more favorable compared to the hydride transfer pathway. In addition, the ruthenium hydride formation pathway is less favorable than the ruthenium hydroxo complex formation pathway under basic conditions. A DFT mechanistic study has been performed to unveil the nature of preference of transfer hydrogenation of ketones and dihydrogen release catalyzed by single-site cyclometallated ruthenium complexes under different pH environments.![]()

Abstract
A family of complexes of the formula trans-[RuCl2(L)(R-pybox)] (R-pybox = (S,S)-iPr-pybox, (R,R)-Ph-pybox, L = monodentate phosphonite, PPh(OR)2, and phosphinite, L = PPh2(OR), ligands) were screened in the catalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone, observing a strong influence of the nature of both the R-pybox substituents and the L ligand in the process. The best results were obtained with complex trans-[RuCl2{PPh2(OEt)}{(R,R)-Ph-pybox}] (2c), which provided high conversion and enantioselectivity (up to 96% enantiomeric excess, e.e.) for the reduction of a variety of aromatic ketones, affording the (S)-benzylalcohols.

Abstract
The reduction of ketones through homogeneous transfer hydrogenation catalyzed by transition metals is one of the most important routes for obtaining alcohols from carbonyl compounds. The interest of this method increases when opportune catalytic precursors are able to perform the transformation in an asymmetric fashion, generating enantiomerically enriched chiral alcohols. This reaction has been extensively studied in terms of catalysts and variety of substrates. A large amount of information about the possible mechanisms is available nowadays, which has been of high importance for the development of systems with excellent outcomes in terms of conversion, enantioselectivity and Turn Over Frequency. On the other side, many mechanistic aspects are still unclear, especially for those catalytic precursors which have shown only moderate performances in transfer hydeogenation. This is the case of neutral [RuCl2(η6-arene)(P)] and cationic [Rh(PP)2]X (X = anion; P and PP = mono- and bidentate phosphine, respectively) complexes. Herein, a summary of the known information about the Transfer Hydrogenation catalyzed by these complexes is provided with a continuous focus on the more relevant mechanistic features.

Abstract
The development of efficient and low-cost catalytic systems is important for the replacement of robust noble metal complexes. The synthesis and application of a stable, phosphine-free, water-soluble cyclopentadienone iron tricarbonyl complex in the reduction of polarized double bonds in pure water is reported. In the presence of cationic bifunctional iron complexes, a variety of alcohols and amines were prepared in good yields under mild reaction conditions.
