Functional supramolecular gels based on poly(benzyl ether) dendrons and dendrimers

Supramolecular gels, as a fascinating and useful class of soft materials, constructed from low-molecular-weight gelators via noncovalent interactions have attracted increasing attention in the past few decades. Dendrimers and dendrons are highly branched and monodisperse macromolecules with a well-defined three-dimensional architecture and multiple surface functionalities. In recent years, poly(benzyl ether) dendrimers and dendrons are found to be powerful candidates for constructing gel phase materials in organic or aqueous media due to the advantages of capability of forming multiple noncovalent interactions and significant steric impact. In this Feature Article, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress in supramolecular gels involving poly(benzyl ether) dendritic molecules. Firstly, we outline the molecular design strategies of dendritic gelators with an emphasis on the discussion of their gelating units and position in molecular structures. Subsequently, we discuss the potential applications of dendritic gels in light harvesting, stimuli responsive materials, sensors and environmental remediation. In addition, the potential challenges and future perspectives of poly(benzyl ether) dendritic gels have also been discussed. It is hoped that this feature article will attract increasing attention and provide some valuable insights for the future design and evolution of supramolecular gels.

Quinoline-cored Poly(Aryl Ether) Dendritic Organogels with Multiple Stimuli-Responsive and Adsorptive Properties

Functional supramolecular gel materials have potential applications in sensors, optical switches, artificial antennae, drug delivery and so on. In this paper, quinoline-cored poly(aryl ether) dendritic organogelators were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. The gelation behaviour of the dendritic organogelator was tested in organic solvents, mixed solvents and ionic liquids. The dendron Q-G1 was found to be an efficient and versatile organogelator toward various apolar and polar organic solvents with the critical gelation concentrations (CGCs) approaching 1.2×10^-2  mol/L, indicating one dendritic organogelator could immobilize 1.2×10³ solvent molecules in the organogel network. Interestingly, these dendrons exhibited excellent gel formation in ionic liquids. Notably, these dendritic organogels were found to display multiple stimuli-responsive properties toward external stimuli including heat, ultrasound and shear stress, with a reversible sol-gel phase transition. In addition, the dendritic organogel could effectively adsorb heavy metals and organic dyes. The removal rate of Pb²⁺ was up to 20% and the adsorption rate for Rhodamine B was as high as 89%.

Linear and Nonlinear Dynamic Behavior of Polymer Micellar Assemblies Connected by Metallo-Supramolecular Interactions

The linear and nonlinear rheology of associative colloidal polymer assemblies with metallo-supramolecular interactions is herein studied. Polystyrene-b-poly(tert-butylacrylate) with a terpyridine ligand at the end of the acrylate block is self-assembled into micelles in ethanol, a selective solvent for the latter block, and supramolecularly connected by complexation to divalent metal ions. The dependence of the system elasticity on polymer concentration can be semi-quantitatively understood by a geometrical packing model. For strongly associated (Ni2+, Fe2+) and sufficiently concentrated systems (15 w/v%), any given ligand end-group has a virtually 100% probability of being located in an overlapping hairy region between two micelles. By assuming a 50% probability of intermicellar crosslinks being formed, an excellent prediction of the plateau modulus was achieved and compared with the experimental results. For strongly associated but somewhat more dilute systems (12 w/v%) that still have significant overlap between hairy regions, the experimental modulus was lower than the predicted value, as the effective number of crosslinkers was further reduced along with possible density heterogeneities. The reversible destruction of the network by shear forces can be observed from the strain dependence of the storage and loss moduli. The storage moduli of the Ni2+ and Zn2+ systems at a lower concentration (12 w/v%) showed a rarely observed feature (i.e., a peak at the transition from linear to nonlinear regime). This peak disappeared at a higher concentration (15 w/v%). This behavior can be rationalized based on concentration-dependent network stretchability.

Perfluoroarene induces a pentapeptidic hydrotrope into a pH-tolerant hydrogel allowing naked eye sensing of Ca2+ ions

Self-assembly of a novel thermoresponsive, pyrene-appended oligopeptide sequence VPGKP (PyP) leads to the formation of spherical aggregates in water. The sizes of the globular aggregates of the peptide, PyP, strongly depend on the temperature of its suspension in water and decrease with the decrease in temperature showing a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phenomenon. Furthermore, a pyrene-octafluoronaphthalene (OFN) 'pair' has been used as a supramolecular synthon to induce hydrogelation of PyP in the presence of an equimolar amount of OFN via complementary quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. The gel shows excellent pH tolerance and thixotropic behavior. Detailed studies suggest the existence of lamellar packing of the gelators in a right-handed helical fashion which yields globular aggregates. The globular aggregates are sticky in nature and form a gel via inter-globular interactions. Addition of Ca2+ ions reinforces the mechanical strength and also reduces the critical gelator concentration of the native gel through coordination with the free -COO- group of the gelator. Therefore, the present hydrogel system could further be used as a naked eye sensor of Ca2+ ions.

Self-Healing Hydrogel from a Dipeptide and HCl Sensing

Ordered self-assembly of small organic molecules may induce novel properties in a supramolecular arrangement and can act as advance functional materials. This paper discusses the development of a new stimuli-responsive dipeptide hydrogelator containing l-phenylalanine and α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib). The dipeptide Boc-Phe-Aib-OH, on addition with three equivalent of sodium hydroxide and water, transformed into a robust hydrogel. The transparent hydrogel is self-healing in nature. The instant gelation is highly selective toward sodium hydroxide and does not need any sonication or heating-cooling cycle. The thixotropic nature of the gel has been confirmed by rheological step-strain experiments at room temperature. Moreover, in the oil-water mixture, the compound exhibits phase-selective gelation. When the gel cylinder is cut into pieces, it does not conduct electricity, but once self-healing occurs, it conducts electricity. The diffusion of rhodamine 6G through the hydrogel indicates the dynamic nature. The hydrogel is highly sensitive toward HCl, that is, in the presence of HCl vapor, the gel becomes deformed.

Water induced morphological transformation of a poly(aryl ether) dendron amphiphile: helical fibers to nanorods, as light-harvesting antenna systems

Self-assembly of suitable molecular building blocks is an efficient and convenient approach to generate nanomaterials with various morphologies and functions. Moreover, understanding the nature of molecules and controlling factors of their self-assembly process is crucial in fundamental aspects of molecular self-assembly which provide insights into the design of new assemblies with functional nano-architectures. To this end, the present study reports water induced self-assembled multifaceted morphology formation and the plausible pathway of the morphology transformation of a single poly(aryl ether) dendron amphiphile 1(D). In THF, 1(D) self-assembles into helical fibers. However, with an increase in the water fraction in its THF solution, the morphology changes to nanorods through an intermediate scroll-up pathway of exfoliated fibers. The nanorod formation and transformation of 1(D) are investigated using various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques, which indicate that it has highly ordered multilayered arrays of 1(D) molecules. Finally, these multilayered arrays of 1(D) nanorods are exploited for constructing a model light-harvesting system via the incorporation of small quantities of two newly designed BODIPY based molecules as energy acceptors and 1(D) as an antenna chromophore.

Stimuli-responsive dendrimers in drug delivery

Dendrimers have shown great promise as carriers in drug delivery due to their unique structures and superior properties. However, the precise control of payload release from a dendrimer matrix still presents a great challenge. Stimuli-responsive dendrimers that release payloads in response to a specific trigger could offer distinct clinical advantages over those dendrimers that release payloads passively. These smart polymers are designed to specifically release their payloads at targeted regions or at constant release profiles for specific therapies. They represent an attractive alternative to targeted dendrimers and enable dendrimer-based therapeutics to be more effective, more convenient, and much safer. The wide range of stimuli, either endogenous (acid, enzyme, and redox potentials) or exogenous (light, ultrasound, and temperature change), allows great flexibility in the design of stimuli-responsive dendrimers. In this review article, we will highlight recent advances and opportunities in the development of stimuli-responsive dendrimers for the treatment of various diseases, with emphasis on cancer. Specifically, the applications of stimuli-responsive dendrimers in drug delivery as well as their mechanisms are intensively reviewed.

Reactive organogels based on isoxazole esters: alkali metal ions selective gelation and crystallization

A methanol solution of a series of simple esters exhibited a response to different alkali bases, which formed solutions, organogels and crystals, respectively, when LiOH, NaOH and KOH were separately introduced.

Rationally designed anion-responsive-organogels: sensing F⁻ via reversible color changes in gel-gel states with specific selectivity

Through the rational introduction of the multi self-assembly driving forces and F(-) sensing sites into a gelator molecule, low-molecular-weight organogelators L1 and L2 were designed and synthesized. L1 and L2 showed excellent gelation ability in DMF and DMSO. They could form stable organogels (OGL1 and OGL2) in DMF and DMSO with very low critical gelation concentrations. OGL1 and OGL2 could act as anion-responsive organogels (AROGs). Unlike most of the reported AROGs showing gel-sol phase transition according to the anions' stimulation, OGL1 could colorimetrically sense F(-) under gel-gel states. Upon addition of F(-), OGL1 showed dramatic color changes, while the color could be recovered by adding H(+). Moreover, OGL1 showed specific selectivity for F(-), other common anions and cations could not lead to any similar response. What deserves to be mentioned is that the report on specific sensing of anions under gel-gel states is very scarce. The gel-gel state recognition can endow the organogel OGL1 with the merits of facile and efficient properties for rapid detection of F(-). Therefore, OGL1 could act as a F(-) responsive smart material.

Chiral/ring closed vs. achiral/open chain triazine-based organogelators: induction and amplification of supramolecular chirality in organic gels

The purpose of this study is to compare the gelling behavior of two molecules: a chiral compound and its achiral counterpart. The chiral partner is characterized by a rigid, chiral pyrrolidine nucleus, while the achiral one contains a flexible diethanolamine moiety. The chiral compound is an already known good organogelator, but also the achiral compound shows remarkable gelling properties. Very interestingly, a small fraction of the chiral compound induces chirality and strong CD effects in its aggregates with the achiral one. The observed chirality amplification corresponds to a peculiar sergeant-and-soldier effect. Molecular modelling and CD calculations suggested a model for the supramolecular assembly of hetero-aggregates that fits the experimental data.

A multistimuli-responsive photochromic metal-organic gel

A photochromic metal-organic gel with thermo-, photo-, and anion-responsive behavior is obtained. Unusually, heating of the Al-ligand solution leads to gel formation and cooling to room temperature reverses the process to reform the solution. The gel is sensitive to weakly coordinating anions. Additionally, reversible photochromic transformations take place both in the solution and gel states, accompanied by reversibly switched luminescence.

Wholly π-conjugated low-molecular-weight organogelator that displays triple-channel responses to fluoride ions

A novel salicylidene aniline-based wholly π-conjugated molecule that could be self-assembled into an organogel was synthesized. The rigid organogel collapsed into fluid solutions with significant changes in UV-vis absorption and fluorescence colors in response to fluoride ions. It was found that the hydroxyl group in the salicylidene aniline moiety played a key role not only in the gelation but also in fluoride ion responses.

Metal induced gelation from pyridine cored poly(aryl ether) dendrons with in situ synthesis and stabilization of hybrid hydrogel composites

Metal induced gel formation from pyridine cored poly(aryl ether) dendrons has been achieved. In addition, the gel is successfully utilized for in situ synthesis and stabilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which form an unprecedented, well-organized arrangement on the nanofibers.
