Gold-Catalyzed 6-Exo-DigCycloisomerization: A Versatile Approach to Functionalized Phenanthrenes

Fluorosulfonyl Arylation of Alkynes via Electron Donor-Acceptor Photoactivation

A radical fluorosulfonyl arylation of alkynes with sulfuryl chlorofluoride as the FSO2 radical precursor via electron donor-acceptor photoactivation driven by daylight or a blue light-emitting diode is disclosed. A series of valuable benzo-fused carbocycles and heterocycles have been produced with simple operation under mild conditions in the absence of any external catalysts or additives. The synthetic potential of this protocol has further demonstrated excellent scalability, as well as diverse postderivatizations, including SuFEx reactions and other useful cascade reactions.

Tandem Ene/[4 + 2] Cycloaddition Reaction for the Synthesis of 9-Benzylphenanthrenes from Arynes and α-(Bromomethyl)styrenes

A tandem reaction for the synthesis of phenanthrenes from arynes and α-(bromomethyl)styrenes is reported. The transformation proceeds via an ene reaction of α-(bromomethyl)styrenes with arynes, followed by a [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. The reaction generates 9-benzylphenanthrene derivatives in moderate to excellent yields.

Rediscovering Bacon's hydrazine/phenylhydrazine mediated cyclization of 2,2'-dicarbonylbi(hetero)aryls: construction of (5-azo)-/indazolo[2,3-a]quinolines

Hydrazine/phenylhydrazine-mediated reductive dicarbonyl coupling reactions have been carried out under mild conditions to provide polycyclic aromatic compounds and azo-substituted polyaromatic compounds. This method has a broad substrate scope with good functional group compatibility.

Brønsted Acid-Catalyzed Carbonyl-Olefin Metathesis: Synthesis of Phenanthrenes via Phosphomolybdic Acid as a Catalyst

Compared with the impressive achievements of catalytic carbonyl-olefin metathesis (CCOM) mediated by Lewis acid catalysts, exploration of the CCOM through Brønsted acid-catalyzed approaches remains quite challenging. Herein, we disclose a synthetic protocol for the construction of a valuable polycycle scaffold through the CCOM with the inexpensive, nontoxic phosphomolybdic acid as a catalyst. The current annulations could realize carbonyl-olefin, carbonyl-alcohol, and acetal-alcohol in situ CCOM reactions and feature mild reaction conditions, simple manipulation, and scalability, making this strategy a promising alternative to the Lewis acid-catalyzed COM reaction.

Catalytic Gold Chemistry: From Simple Salts to Complexes for Regioselective C-H Bond Functionalization

Gold coordinated to neutral phosphines (R₃ P), N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) or anionic ligands is catalytically active in functionalizing various C-H bonds with high selectivity. The sterics/electronic nature of the studied C-H bond, oxidation state of gold and stereoelectronic capacity of the coordinated auxiliary ligand are some of the associated selectivity factors in gold-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization reactions. Hence, in this review a comprehensive update about the action of different types of gold catalysts, from simple to sophisticated ones, on C-H bond reactions and their regiochemical outcome is disclosed. This review also highlights the catalytic applications of Au(I)- and Au(III)-species in creating new opportunities for the regio- and site-selective activation of challenging C-H bonds. Finally, it also intends to stress the potential applications in selective C-H bond activation associated with a variety of heterocycles recently described in the literature.

The core of the matter - arene substitution determines the coordination and catalytic behaviour of tris(1-phosphanyl-1'-ferrocenylene)arene gold(I) complexes

Changing the aromatic core of C3-symmetric tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based tris-phosphanes has profound effects on their coordination behaviour towards gold(i). Depending on the arene (s-triazine, benzene, or trifluorobenzene), four different coordination modes can be distinguished and their preference has been rationalised using computational methods. The corresponding 1 : 1 ligand-to-metal complexes, studied by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy, revealed fluctional behaviour in solution. Given the presence of up to three or six ferrocenylene spacers per complex, their electrochemistry was investigated. The redox-responsive nature of the complexes can be advantageously exploited in the catalytic ring-closing isomerisation of N-(2-propyn-1-yl)benzamide, where the benzene-based 2 : 3 ligand-to-metal complex has been shown to display multiple activity states depending on the degree of (reversible) oxidation in a preliminary trial.

Ring strain strategy for the control of regioselectivity. Gold-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov cycloisomerization initiated tandem reactions of alkynes

Gold-catalyzed nucleophilic addition to terminal alkynes has received considerable interest in the past decade, as this chemistry offers a highly efficient and regioselective way for CC, CH and CX bond formation. However, such a nucleophilic addition mainly involves a Markovnikov addition. In this short review, the recent progress of the gold-catalyzed 5-endo-dig cycloisomerization-initiated tandem reactions by utilizing the steric strain in ring formation to achieve an anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity was reviewed, including the scope of reactions, mechanism and synthetic applications.

Domino C-F Bond Activation of the CF3 Group: Synthesis of Fluorinated Dibenzo[a,c][7]annulenes from 2-(Trifluoromethyl)-1-alkenes and 2,2'-Diceriobiaryls

The construction of ring-fluorinated seven-membered carbocycles was readily achieved via the domino S_N2'-type/S_NV reaction between 2-(trifluoromethyl)-1-alkenes and 1,4-carbodianions. The S_N2'-type reaction of 2-(trifluoromethyl)-1-alkenes with 2,2'-diceriobiaryls generated the intermediary 1,1-difluoro-1-alkenes bearing a monoceriobiaryl moiety, which in turn underwent intramolecular S_NV reaction to afford fluorinated 5H-dibenzo[a,c][7]annulenes.

Mechanisms of metal-catalyzed cycloisomerizations of o-propargylbiaryls and o-allenylbiaryls to phenanthrenes: a DFT study

DFT calculation results reveal that InCl₃-catalyzed cycloisomerization of o-propargylbiphenyl proceeds via 6-exo cyclization followed by intermolecular chloride-assisted H-abstraction/proto-demetalation and intramolecular chloride-assisted H-abstraction/proto-demetalation to afford a phenanthrene skeleton.

Efficient and practical synthesis of enantioenriched 2,3-dihydropyrroles through gold-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydroamination of chiral homopropargyl sulfonamides

A direct gold-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydroamination of chiral homopropargyl sulfonamides has been developed. A range of enantioenriched 2,3-dihydropyrroles are readily accessed by utilizing this approach.

Synthesis of quinoxalines or quinolin-8-amines from N-propargyl aniline derivatives employing tin and indium chlorides

The utility of stannous chloride dihydrate as well as indium/InCl₃ in combination with “ortho-nitrogen”-N-propargylanilines for the construction of either quinoxaline- or quinolin-8-amine-scaffolds is demonstrated. Depending on the nature of the alkyne, different bicyclic nitrogen heterocycles are formed under aerobic conditions.

Gold-catalyzed intermolecular oxidation of o-alkynylbiaryls: an easy and practical access to functionalized fluorenes

A novel gold-catalyzed intermolecular oxidation of o-alkynylbiaryls has been developed. A variety of functionalized fluorenes are readily accessed by utilizing this non-diazo approach, thus providing a viable alternative to synthetically useful fluorenes.
