Hydrogenation of Imines Catalyzed by Trisphosphine-Substituted Molybdenum and Tungsten Nitrosyl Hydrides and Co-Catalytic Acid

Molybdenum-catalyzed hydrogenation of carbon dioxide, bicarbonate, and inorganic carbonates to formates

Herein, we report the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to sodium formate catalyzed by low-valent molybdenum phosphine complexes. The 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (DPPP)-based Mo complex was found to be an efficient catalyst in the presence of NaOH affording formate with a TON of 975 at 130 °C in THF/H2O after 24 h utilizing 40 bar (CO2 : H2 = 10 : 30) pressure. The complex was also active in the hydrogenation of sodium bicarbonate and inorganic carbonates to the corresponding formates. Mechanistic investigation revealed that the reaction proceeded via an intermediate formato complex.

Advances in Group VI Metal-Catalyzed Homogeneous Hydrogenation and Dehydrogenation Reactions

Transition metal-catalyzed homogeneous hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions for attaining plethora of organic scaffolds have evolved as a key domain of research in academia and industry. These protocols are atom-economic, greener, in line with the goal of sustainability, eventually pave the way for numerous novel environmentally benign methodologies. Appealing progress has been achieved in the realm of homogeneous catalysis utilizing noble metals. Owing to their high cost, less abundance along with toxicity issues led the scientific community to search for sustainable alternatives. In this context, earth- abundant base metals have gained substantial attention culminating enormous progress in recent years, predominantly with pincer-type complexes of nickel, cobalt, iron, and manganese. In this regard, group VI chromium, molybdenum and tungsten complexes have been overlooked and remain underdeveloped despite their earth-abundance and bio-compatibility. This review delineates a comprehensive overview in the arena of homogeneously catalysed (de)hydrogenation reactions using group VI base metals chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten till date. Various reactions have been described; hydrogenation, transfer hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling, hydrogen auto transfer, along with their scope and brief mechanistic insights.

Design, Synthesis, Biological Evaluation, and Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Influenza Polymerase PB2 Inhibitors

The PB2 subunit of the influenza RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) has been identified as a promising target for the treatment of influenza. To expand the chemical space of the known influenza polymerase PB2 inhibitor-pimodivir (formerly VX-787) and improve its pharmacokinetic profile, two pimodivir analogs containing 2,3-dihydro-imidazopyridine fragment (comp. I and comp. II) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for anti-influenza virus activity. In the cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay, comp. I and comp. II showed IC₅₀ values of 0.07 and 0.09 μM for A/Puerto Rico/8/34 (H1N1) and 0.04 and 0.07 μM for A/Hong Kong/8/68 (H3N2), respectively. Protein-binding affinity assay results showed a concentration-dependent association and dissociation pattern, with K_D values of 1.398 and 1.670 μM, respectively. In vitro metabolic stability assays showed that comp. I and comp. II exhibited good stability to liver microsomes and considerably less sensitivity to aldehyde oxidase compared to pimodivir. The binding modes of comp. I and comp. II were similar to those of VX-787; however, comp. I and comp. II had lower structural adaptability to PB2 than VX-787. Our results provide helpful information regarding the structure-activity relationship for the design of novel PB2 inhibitors and a reference for the development of drugs containing 2,3-dihydro-imidazopyridine fragments.

Cathode enabled high faradaic efficiency: reduction of imines to amines with H2O as a H-source

Benefiting from a high overpotential of the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction with a carbon paper cathode, the desired electrochemical reduction of imines was achieved with high faradaic efficiency by using H₂O as a H-source. With this sustainable atom-economic strategy, a series of potentially versatile amines were obtained in medium-to-high yields (49-86%).

Low-Valent Molybdenum PNP Pincer Complexes as Catalysts for the Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Low-valent molybdenum PNP pincer complexes were studied as catalysts for the semihydrogenation of alkynes. For that purpose, tBu-substituted PNP complexes PNP tBuMo(CO)2 (6a) and PNP tBuMo(CO)3 (6c) and the NNP complex NNP iPrMo(CO)2(PPh3) ((rac)-7) were synthesized and characterized. By utilizing the cyclohexyl-substituted complex PNPCyMo(CO)2(CH3CN) (5a), several diphenylacetylene derivatives are transformed to the corresponding (Z)-alkenes with good to very good diastereoselectivities (up to 91:9). Mechanistic experiments indicate an outer-sphere mechanism including metal-ligand cooperativity.

Brønsted-Lowry Acid Strength of Metal Hydride and Dihydrogen Complexes

Transition metal hydride complexes are usually amphoteric, not only acting as hydride donors, but also as Brønsted-Lowry acids. A simple additive ligand acidity constant equation (LAC for short) allows the estimation of the acid dissociation constant Ka(LAC) of diamagnetic transition metal hydride and dihydrogen complexes. It is remarkably successful in systematizing diverse reports of over 450 reactions of acids with metal complexes and bases with metal hydrides and dihydrogen complexes, including catalytic cycles where these reactions are proposed or observed. There are links between pKa(LAC) and pKa(THF), pKa(DCM), pKa(MeCN) for neutral and cationic acids. For the groups from chromium to nickel, tables are provided that order the acidity of metal hydride and dihydrogen complexes from most acidic (pKa(LAC) -18) to least acidic (pKa(LAC) 50). Figures are constructed showing metal acids above the solvent pKa scales and organic acids below to summarize a large amount of information. Acid-base features are analyzed for catalysts from chromium to gold for ionic hydrogenations, bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen oxidation and evolution electrocatalysis, H/D exchange, olefin hydrogenation and isomerization, hydrogenation of ketones, aldehydes, imines, and carbon dioxide, hydrogenases and their model complexes, and palladium catalysts with hydride intermediates.

Ligand assisted carbon dioxide activation and hydrogenation using molybdenum and tungsten amides

Molybdenum and tungsten amides M(NO)(CO)(PNP) {M = Mo, 3a; W, 3b; PNP = (iPr₂PCH₂CH₂)₂N} can activate CO₂ at room temperature forming carbamate species M(NO)(CO)(PNP)(OCO) (M = Mo, 4a(trans); W = 4b(trans). Employing 3a,b stoichiometric hydrogenation of carbon dioxide could be demonstrated.
