Unprecedented observation and characterization of sulfur-centred bifurcated hydrogen bonds

Owing to the small electronegativity of the sulfur atom, it is commonly supposed that at most one weak H-bond can be formed between a sulfur atom and an H-bond donor. In this paper, an unprecedented 2 : 1 binding species generated from two molecules of phenol and a molecule of thioether was observed and characterized by various nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing the formation of sulfur-centred O-H⋯S⋯H-O bifurcated H-bonds. This work may provide a simple and efficient method for the quantitative analysis of weak H-bonds between small organic molecules.

Self-assembly of the monohydroxy triterpenoid lupeol yielding nano-fibers, sheets and gel: environmental and drug delivery applications

Lupeol is a medicinally important naturally abundant triterpenoid having a 6-6-6-6-5 fused pentacyclic backbone and one polar secondary "-OH" group at the C3 position of the "A" ring. It was extracted from the dried outer bark of Bombax ceiba and its self-assembly properties were investigated in different neat organic as well as aquous-organic binary liquid mixtures. The triterpenoid having only one polar "-OH" group and a rigid lipophilic backbone self-assembled in neat organic non-polar liquids like n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and polar liquids like DMSO, DMF, DMSO-H₂O, DMF-H₂O, and EtOH-H₂O yielding supramolecular gels via formation of nano to micrometre long self-assembled fibrillar networks (SAFINs). Morphological investigation of the self-assemblies was carried out by field emission scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical microscopy, concentration dependent FTIR and wide angle X-ray diffraction studies. The mechanical properties of the gels were studied by concentration dependent rheological studies in different solvents. The gels were capable of removing toxic micro-pollutants like rhodamine-B and 5,6-carboxyfluorescein as well as the toxic heavy metal Cr(vi) from contaminated water. Moreover release of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin from a drug loaded gel in PBS buffer at pH 7.2 has also been demonstrated by spectrophotometry.

Insights into Substrate Self-Assisted Activation of Allylic Alcohols Guiding to Mild Allylic Substitution of Tautomerizable Heteroarenes

A substrate self-assisted activation of allylic alcohols by tautomerizable heteroarenes via hydrogen bonding was disclosed by various NMR techniques, including variable-temperature ¹H NMR, Job plot, and ¹H NMR titration. Guided by these finding, a much milder allylic substitution of tautomerizable heteroarenes with allylic alcohols was developed, affording the target products in high yields.

Substrate Self-Assisted Secondary Bond Activation of Allylic Alcohol in a Tsuji-Trost Reaction Revealed by NMR Methods

The first experimental evidence for the palladium-catalyzed secondary bond activation of allylic alcohols in a Tsuji-Trost reaction was provided by NMR methods, such as variable-temperature ¹H NMR, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), Job's method, ¹H NMR titration, and nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (NOESY). The experimental results revealed that the substrate self-assisted activation of allylic alcohols is probably performed via a 1:1 binding six-membered-ring complex, which are formed by the formation of the secondary bonds, the hydrogen bond and P···O noncovalent bond between allylic alcohol and phosphonium ylide.

H- and J-aggregates formed from a nontraditional π-gelator depending on the solvent polarity for the detection of amine vapors

A tert-butyl carbazole-modified difluoroboron β-diketonate complex (TCbzB) has been synthesized. Although no traditional gelation group was involved in TCbzB, it could form organogels in the mixed solvents of o-dichlorobenzene/cyclohexane (v/v = 1/5 or 1/2), toluene/cyclohexane (v/v = 1/2) and chlorobenzene/cyclohexane (v/v = 1/2). Interestingly, an orange organogel was obtained in o-dichlorobenzene/cyclohexane (v/v = 1/2) with relatively high polarity and red organogels were gained in the other three mixed solvents with relatively low polarity. TCbzB self-assembled into H-aggregates and J-aggregates in orange and red organogels, respectively, and the corresponding xerogels emitted yellow and red light, respectively, under UV illumination. The red emission of the xerogel-based film could be quenched significantly by gaseous n-propylamine and aniline because of the decomplexation of the difluoroboron β-diketonate complex by n-propylamine and the weak interactions between aniline and boron difluoride units.

Fluorescent nanofiber film based on a simple organogelator for highly efficient detection of TFA vapour

A thermo-responsive supramolecular gel and its luminescence enhancement induced by rare earth Y3

A new acylhydrazone-functionalized dual benzimidazole derivative gelator (L) was synthesized. L can self-assemble in DMSO-EG (ethylene glycol) or DMF-water mixtures to form a thermo-responsive supramolecular organogel (L-gel). In order to increase the fluorescence intensity of L-gel (DMSO-EG system), L-gel slowly turned into a clear solution upon addition of one equivalent of RE (rare earth) Y³⁺. Interestingly, this gelator L and Y³⁺ can be assembled into an enhanced blue-light-emitting supramolecular metallogel (Y@gel) in DMF-water mixtures.

Strong Blue Emissive Supramolecular Self-Assembly System Based on Naphthalimide Derivatives and Its Ability of Detection and Removal of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol

Two simple and novel gelators (G-P with pyridine and G-B with benzene) with different C-4 substitution groups on naphthalimide derivatives have been designed and characterized. Two gelators could form organogels in some solvents or mixed solvents. The self-assembly processes of G-P in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile/H₂O (1/1, v/v) and G-B in acetonitrile were studied by means of electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The organogel of G-P in the mixed solvent of acetonitrile/H₂O (1/1, v/v) formed an intertwined fiber network, and its emission spectrum had an obvious blue shift compared with that of solution. By contrast, the organogel of G-B in acetonitrile formed a straight fiber, and its emission had an obvious red shift compared with that of solution. G-P and G-B were employed in detecting nitroaromatic compounds because of their electron-rich property. G-P is more sensitive and selective toward 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) compared with G-B. The sensing mechanisms were investigated by ¹H NMR spectroscopic experiments and theoretical calculations. From these experimental results, it is proposed that electron transfer occurs from the electron-rich G-P molecule to the electron-deficient TNP because of the possibility of complex formation between G-P and TNP. The G-P molecule could detect TNP in water, organic solvent media, as well as using test strips. It is worth mentioning that the organogel G-P can not only detect TNP but also remove TNP from the solution into the organogel system.

Naphthalimide-based fluorescent gelator for construction of both organogels and stimuli-responsive metallogels

Herein, we presented the first example that a gelator can form both organogels and metallogels with multiple gelation approaches tuned by multiple stimuli.

Melamine tunable effect in a lenalidomide-based supramolecular self-assembly system via hydrogen bonding

In this study, melamine could tune the self-assembly structures, rheological behaviour, and surface wettability via intermolecular hydrogen bonding between gelator 1 and melamine.
