Bigger and Brighter Fluorenes: Facile π-Expansion, Brilliant Emission and Sensing of Nitroaromatics

From Serendipity to Precision: Decoding the Enigma of Rearrangement in Scholl-Type Reactions for Programmable Cyclization

Rearrangements in the Scholl reaction have traditionally been serendipitous, lacking a systematic approach for synthesizing rearranged and cyclized products. This paper introduces a strategic pathway to achieve rearranged-cyclized thienotetrahelicene derivatives over direct-cyclized chrysenothiophene derivatives by finely modifying the reaction conditions and tuning the electronic properties in Scholl-type reaction precursors, tetraarylthiophenes. Through careful design principles, we demonstrate the programmable synthesis of these distinct products.

Synthesis of High-Fluorescent Diphenyl-anthracene Derivatives and Application in Detection of Nitroaromatic Explosives and Fingerprint Identification

The development of high-intensity fluorescent materials is always the focuses and forefront projects because of their important applications in displays, sensing and detection fields. In recent years, the detection of explosives has attracted increasing attention due to security and counterterrorism issues. Herein, two diphenyl-anthracene (DPA) derivatives were designed and synthesized by introducing strong electron withdrawing fluorine atoms and cyano-groups to DPA, which exhibited strong fluorescence both in the solution and solid phase with the absolute quantum yields up to 70.4 % and 45.9 % respectively. The detection behavior of nitroaromatic explosives such as picric acid (PA), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and 3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NP) also shows good sensitivity with the quenching constant as high as 6.3×104  L mol-1 . Theoretical calculation demonstrates that the fluorescence quenching behavior of the two DPA derivatives is caused by the behavior of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and the resonance energy transfer (RET) studies explained the higher sensitivity and selectivity of both compounds towards PA than other nitro-containing explosives. Furthermore, the strong solid-state fluorescence of the DPA derivatives also shows excellent advantages in enhancing latent fingerprint recognition.

Chasing Turns and Twists: Unraveling the One-Step Synthesis, Intricate Pathways, and Structural Revelations of N-Aryl Aza-quasi[8]circulenes

An efficient one-step synthesis of N-Aryl aza-quasi[8]circulenes is reported starting from bis(biaryl)carbazoles. The intermediacy of N-aryl aza[7]helicene is investigated, and the Scholl oxidative cyclization route is invoked here to overcome the large strain during the formation of N-aryl aza-quasi[8]circulenes from N-aryl aza[7]helicene. Notably, this transformation occurs without the need for directing groups and proceeds from a more helical to a less helical pathway. Both the N-aryl aza[7]helicene and N-aryl aza-quasi[8]circulene are confirmed by single crystal X-ray structural analysis. The enantiomers of N-aryl aza[7]helicene are separated by chiral HPLC and analyzed by circular dichroism spectroscopy to investigate their chiroptical properties. However, N-aryl aza-quasi[8]circulene racemizes rapidly. The radical cations generated from aza-quasi[8]circulene through chemical oxidation exhibit broad absorption in the near-IR region and air stability up to 24 h. Optical and electrochemical studies with aza[7]helicene and aza-quasi[8]circulene derivatives highlight their potential in organic electronic devices.

Rearrangements in Scholl Reaction

Rearrangements in Scholl reaction are mostly serendipitous. The design of molecular precursors is what seems to guide the course of rearrangement. This review consolidates different classes of precursors used in Scholl reaction and their accompanying rearrangements that include aryl migration, migration followed by cyclization and skeletal rearrangements involving ring expansion, ring contraction and both, under the reaction conditions. The attempt in collating heretofore-reported examples in this review is to guide designing appropriate precursors to predictably achieve complex molecular structures or nanographenes or defect-nanographenes via rearrangement.

Mechanoluminescence and aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) of an In-MOF based on a 9,9'-diphenyl-9H-fluorene tetraacid linker

A water-stable In-MOF, constructed based on a conformationally-flexible tetraacid linker, i.e., 2,7-bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)-9,9'-diphenyl-9H-fluorene, i.e., H4DPF, is shown to exhibit a significantly enhanced solid-state fluorescence quantum yield (φf) of 23% in comparison with that of the linker (φfca. 4%) as a consequence of rigidification of the latter by metalation. Application of external stimulus in the form of grinding of the In-MOF leads to a drastic enhancement by 29%, φf from 23 to 52%. Solid-state absorption and emission spectra show that the absorption in the region of 368-550 nm gets diminished with a concomitant change in the emission maximum with a blue shift upon grinding. Fluorescence enhancement with grinding is correlated with a gradual reduction in the size of the particles, as established by SEM analysis. MOF particle aggregation has been invoked to account for the observed fluorescence enhancement in addition to a subtle conformational change in the structure of the linker upon grinding. Intriguingly, the ground MOF particles exhibit aggregation behaviour in the DMF-water solvent system with the emission further increasing up to 75% for the increase in the water fraction (fw) from 0 to 60%; hydrophobic aggregation of particles evidently leads to a change in the conformation of the linker and particle aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE). De-aggregation of particles ensues for fw = 70-90%, as reflected by a gradual decrease in the emission intensity. It is shown that the suspension of ground In-MOF particles in water permits sensing of metal ions, in particular Al3+ ions, by fluorescence quenching with detection at a sub-ppb level. The observed results comprise first demonstration of both mechanoluminescence and AEE of MOF particles.

Rigidly Fused Spiro-Conjugated π-Systems

Spiro-fused π-systems have gained considerable attention for their application as semiconductors in molecular electronics. Here, a synopsis regarding recent breakthroughs in ladderized spirobifluorenes and indeno-spirobifluorenes, along with further spiro-condensed heteroatomic hydrocarbons with donor-acceptor moieties, is provided. Additionally, an extended range of rigid spirobifluorene polymers and specific doubly linked spiro-systems with partial chiral character is discussed. The diverse applications of the aforementioned structures are thoroughly evaluated.

Designing a near-infrared circularly polarized luminescent dye by dissymmetric spiro-fusion

A novel spiro-fused terrylene dimer (SDT) was designed and synthesized by a dissymmetric spiro-fusion strategy. The spiro-conjugation effect caused a distinct red-shift and enhancement of the absorption spectrum. Two chiral enantiomers of SDT have been absolutely resolved and identified in combination with theoretical calculations. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement revealed its potential as a near-infrared chiral luminescent material.

Electron-Rich π-Extended Diindolotriazatruxene-Based Chemosensors with Highly Selective and Rapid Responses to Nitroaromatic Explosives

A series of electron-rich π-extended diindolotriazatruxene-based compounds DIT, 4Py-DIT (bearing pyrene units) and 4PyF-DIT (bearing fluorene units) have been explored and investigated as fluorescence chemosensors. Quantitative analysis through fluorescence titrations showed that the resulting DIT molecules exhibited highly selective response to electron-deficient nitroaromatic explosives. The calculated Stern-Volmer quenching constants (>4.0×10³  M^-1 ) revealed that these sensors were much more sensitive in solution compared to most of the existing small-molecule fluorescence chemosensors based on pyrene, triphenylene, triphenylamine, and triazatruxene skeletons. Fluorescence quenching showed that the sensors adsorbed on paper were sensitive to explosives in the solid, solution, and vapor phases, with fast response times of about 10 s. Moreover, these chemosensors are reusable for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds as they recover their fluorescence intensity after quenching.

Accessing [g]-Face π-Expanded Fluorescent Coumarins by Scholl Cyclization

[g]-Face π-expanded coumarins are synthesized by employing the Scholl cyclization method. These new arene-annulated dipolar coumarins display interesting absorption and fluorescent properties. The large Stokes shifts, tuneable fluorescent quantum yields, and high photostability reveal promise in bioimaging application.
