An Encyclopedic Compendium on Chemosensing Supramolecular Metal-Organic Gels

Chemosensing, an interdisciplinary scientific domain, plays a pivotal role ranging from environmental monitoring to healthcare diagnostics and (inter)national security. Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are recognized for their stability, selectivity, and responsiveness, making them valuable for chemosensing applications. Researchers have explored the development of MOGs based on different metal ions and ligands, allowing for tailored properties and sensitivities, and have even demonstrated their applications as portable sensors such as paper-based test strips for practical use. Herein, several studies related to MOGs development and their applications in the chemosensing field via UV-visible or luminance along with electrochemical approach are presented. These papers explored MOGs as versatile materials with their use in sensing bio or environmental analytes. This review provides a foundational understanding of key concepts, methodologies, and recent advancements in this field, fostering the scientific community.

Scrolling in Supramolecular Gels: A Designer's Guide

Gelation by small molecules is a topic of enormous importance in catalysis, nanomaterials, drug delivery, and pharmaceutical crystallization. The mechanism by which gelators self-organize into a fibrous gel network is poorly understood. Herein, we describe the crystal structures and gelation properties of a library of bis(urea) compounds and show, via molecular dynamics simulations, how gelator aggregation progresses from a continuous pattern of supramolecular motifs to a homogeneous fiber network. Our model suggests that lamellae with asymmetric surfaces scroll into uniform unbranched fibrils, while sheets with symmetric surfaces undergo stacking to form crystals. The self-assembly of asymmetric lamellae is associated with specific molecular features, such as the presence of narrow and flexible end groups with high packing densities, and likely represents a general mechanism for the formation of small-molecule gels.

Differentiating aliphatic and aromatic alcohols using triazine-based supramolecular organogelators: end group-specific selective gelation with chain length of alcohols

Supramolecular gels have an extensive range of potential applications, out of which stimuli-responsive materials are a topic of contemporary research. Gels being kinetically entrapped materials can be tuned to different forms using external chemical stimuli. In this context, three different triazine gelators, each containing a unique end group, were examined for gelation in various solvent systems. Nevertheless, the gelation was limited to only alcoholic solvents, suggesting that the hydrogen bonds between the gelating solvent and gelator play a crucial role in gelation. Further, it was found that these gelators could gelate only with aliphatic alcohols, which could be degelled easily using aromatic alcohols. The three gelators exhibited distinct gelation of aliphatic alcohols based on their end groups. The gelator with the polar-aromatic end group (C5H4N) was found to gelate with lighter alcohols, whereas that with the nonpolar aromatic end group (C6H5) was found to prefer higher alcohols. The MGC and Tgel values were also found to depend on the alkyl chain length/branching of the alcohols. The crystal structure of one of the gelators provides insights into the model structure of the gels. Cyclohexanol was the only solvent that could produce gels with all three of the as-synthesised gelators. The process of degelation by aromatic alcohols was monitored at different points of the disassembly process by rheological and morphological measurements to understand the extent of controlled degelation. These gels have great potential for use in controlled drug delivery and chemical sensing, among other areas.

Exploration of Variable Solvent Directed Self-Healable Supramolecular M(II)-Metallogels (M = Co, Ni, Zn) of Azelaic Acid: Investigating Temperature-Dependent Ion Conductivity and Antibacterial Efficiency

Molecular self-assembly assisted self-healing supramolecular metallogels of azelaic acid with cobalt(II)-, nickel(II)-, and zinc(II)-based metal acetate salts were successfully fabricated. Individually, N,N'-dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide were immobilized within these distinctly synthesized soft-scaffolds of metallogels to attain their semisolid viscoelastic nature. Rheological experiments such as amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, and thixotropic measurements were executed for these metallogels to ratify their gel features. The different extents of supramolecular interactions operating within these solvent-directed metallogels were clearly reflected in terms of their distinct morphological patterns as investigated through field emission scanning electron microscopy. Comparative infrared (IR) spectral properties of metallogels along with individual metal salts and azelaic acid were analyzed. These experimental data clearly depict the significant shifting of Fourier transform (FT)-IR peaks of xerogel samples of different metallogels from the gel-forming precursors. The networks present within the soft-scaffold are evidently illustrated by the electrospray ionization-mass experimental data. The temperature-dependent ionic conductivity studies with these solvent-directed versatile metallogel systems were investigated through impedance spectroscopy. The temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopic studies clearly demonstrate that the ion-transportation within the gel matrix depends not only on the types of cations but also on the dielectric properties of the immobilized solvents. The antipathogenic effect of these metallogel systems has also been explored by testing their effectiveness against human pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC 109) and Vibrio parahemolyticus, and Gram-positive bacteria like Bacillus cereus (MTCC 1272). These gel soft-scaffolds show no significant cytotoxicity against both the human neuroblastoma cell line-SH-SY5Y and the human embryonic kidney cell line-HEK 293.

Solvent-Driven Variations of Third-Order Nonlinear Thermo-Optical Features of Glutaric Acid-Directed Self-Healing Supramolecular Ni(II) Metallogels

The generation of solvent-directed self-healing supramolecular Ni(II) metallogels of glutaric acid (i.e., Ni-Glu-DMF and Ni-Glu-DMSO) is described in this article. Polar aprotic solvents like N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are separately entrapped into the Ni(II)-acetate salt and glutaric acid-mediated networks to attain the semisolid flexible scaffolds. The gel nature of the fabricated materials is experimentally proven through different rheological tests such as amplitude sweep, frequency sweep, and thixotropic (time sweep) measurements. The self-repairing strategy and load-bearing features of the synthesized metallogel are studied in this work. The different supramolecular noncovalent interactions working within the soft scaffold are clearly explored. The formation strategy and the microstructural features of these synthesized metallogels are scrutinized through a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy study and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) morphological analyses. The FT-IR spectroscopy observation displays a considerable amount of shifting of the infrared (IR) peaks of the xerogel samples of both the metallogels Ni-Glu-DMF and Ni-Glu-DMSO. The electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass spectroscopy result demonstrates the plausible construction of the metallogel network. In order to examine the nonlinear optical characteristics of the two synthesized self-healing metallogels Ni-Glu-DMSO and Ni-Glu-DMF, Z-scan measurements are carried out with a continuous wave (CW) diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser at 532 nm. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption coefficient, thermo-optical coefficient, and third-order susceptibility of these metallogels were evaluated by analyzing the experimental data from the Sheik-Bahae formalism. The nonlinear thermo-optical study reveals that these solvent-dependent metallogels show negative signs of nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient. The figure of merit calculated for these compounds shows good agreement for their use in nonlinear photonic devices.

Facile one-pot multicomponent synthesis of peptoid based gelators as novel scaffolds for drug incorporation and pH-sensitive release

Infections caused by bacteria are the primary cause of illness and death globally, and antibiotics are the most commonly used medications to treat them. However, there are certain inherent problems in administering these drugs without any changes to their effectiveness. In order to sustain the targeted dosage over time, the use of a biocompatible local drug delivery system using low molecular mass gelators is preferred as a potential approach to reduce its side effects. Low molecular weight organic gelators (LMWOGs) have drawn a lot of attention due to their numerous and varied applications in multiple fields. But nowadays its quite a challenging task to synthesize new types of LMWOGs that can fill the significant gap towards potential applications. In this work, we have explored a multicomponent pathway for the synthesis of a small repertoire of peptoids from simple building blocks by a one-pot Ugi reaction. A variety of novel effective low molecular weight organic gelators have been synthesized, leading to the formation of stable self-assembled aggregates in various solvents such as DMSO, aqueous DMSO, and methanol. Consequently, these aggregates give rise to the creation of organogels and organo/hydrogels. The gels have a minimum gelation concentration (MGC) of 1-2% w/v with high thermal stability. Furthermore, successful encapsulation and release of metronidazole (MZ) were achieved within the gel matrix under physiological pH conditions at 37 °C, ensuring the preservation of its structural and functional properties. The results demonstrated that the release rate of MZ from the organo/hydrogels is contingent on pH, exhibiting a gradual and regulated release in mild alkaline environments. Moreover, the devised system displayed noteworthy antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli, underscoring the potential of these novel low molecular weight organic gels (LMWOGs) as effective drug delivery systems in the pharmaceutical industry. The gel formulations exhibit biocompatibility and negligible cytotoxicity, as evidenced by cell viability studies conducted using the MTT assay.

Amine-rich Nickel(II)-Xerogel as a Highly Active Bifunctional Metallo-organo Catalyst for Aqueous Knoevenagel Condensation and Solvent-free CO2 Cycloaddition

Metallogels formed from supramolecular interactions of low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) combine the qualities of heterogeneous catalysts and offer the advantages of multifunctionality owing to the facile installation of desired task-specific moieties on the surface and along the channels of the gels. We discuss the applications of a triazole-based Ni(II) gel-derived xerogel (NiXero) having a high density of Ni(II)-nodes and appended primary amines as a recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for Knoevenagel condensation of aldehyde and malononitrile in water and the solvent-free cycloaddition of CO2 to form a series of cyclic carbonates with near-quantitative conversion of the respective epoxides, with low catalyst loading (0.59 mol %), high catalyst stability, and recyclability. The structural advantages of NiXero, due to the concurrent presence of bifunctional Lewis acid-base sites on the channels, open Ni(II) nodes, Ntriazole, pendant -NH2 and its chemical stability, are conducive to the cooperative heterogeneous catalytic activity under mild conditions. This work emphasizes the effective amalgamation of metals with purpose-built ligand systems for the construction of metallogels and their utility as heterogeneous catalysts for desired organic transformations.

Gels of Semiconducting Polymers in Benign Solvents

Gels of semiconducting polymers have many potential applications, including biomedical devices and sensors. Here, we report a self-assembled gel system consisting of isoindigo-based semiconducting polymers with galactose side chains in benign, alcohol-based solvents. Because of the carbohydrate side chains, the modified isoindigo polymers are soluble in alcohols. We obtained thermoreversible gels in 1-propanol using these polymers and di-Fmoc-l-lysine, a molecular gelator. The polymers and molecular gelators have been selected in such a way that they do not have significant physical interactions. The molecular gelator self-assembled to form a fibrous structure that confines the polymer chains in the interstitial spaces of the fibers. The polymer chains formed local aggregations and increased the shear moduli of the gels significantly. Bulky galactose side chains and the less planar nature of the polymer backbone hindered the formation of long-range assembled structures of the polymers. However, the dispersion of polymers throughout the gel samples resulted in a percolated structure in the dried gel films. The bulk electrical conductivity of dried gels confirmed the presence of such percolated structures. Our results demonstrated that carbohydrate-containing conjugated polymers can be combined with molecular gelators to obtain gels in eco-friendly solvents.

Synthesis of a Series of Trimeric Branched Glycoconjugates and Their Applications for Supramolecular Gels and Catalysis

Carbohydrate-derived molecular gelators have found many practical applications as soft materials. To better understand the structure and molecular gelation relationship and further explore the applications of sugar-based gelators, we designed and synthesized eight trimeric branched sugar triazole derivatives and studied their self-assembling properties. These included glucose, glucosamine, galactose, and maltose derivatives. Interestingly, the gelation properties of these compounds exhibited correlations with the peripheral sugar structures. The maltose derivative did not form gels in the tested solvents, but all other compounds exhibited gelation properties in at least one of the solvents. Glucose derivatives showed superior performance, followed by glucosamine derivatives. They typically formed gels in toluene and alcohols; some formed gels in ethanol-water mixtures or DMSO water mixtures. The glycoclusters 9 and 10 demonstrated rate acceleration for the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions. These were further studied for their metallogels formation properties, and the copper metallogels from compound 9 were successfully utilized to catalyze click reactions. These metallogels were able to form a gel column, which was effective in converting the reactants into the triazole products in multiple cycles. Moreover, the same gel column was used to transform a second click reaction using different reactants. The synthesis and characterization of these compounds and their applications for catalytic reactions were discussed.

Recent advances in supramolecular self-assembly derived materials for high-performance supercapacitors

The key preponderance of supramolecular self-assembly strategy is its ability to precisely assemble various functional units at the molecular level through non-covalent bonds to form multifunctional materials. Supramolecular materials have the merits of diverse functional groups, flexible structure, and unique self-healing properties, which make them of great value in the field of energy storage. This paper reviews the latest research progress of the supramolecular self-assembly strategy for the advanced electrode materials and electrolytes for supercapacitors, including supramolecular self-assembly for the preparation of high-performance carbon materials, metal-based materials and conductive polymer materials, and its beneficial effects on the performance of supercapacitors. The preparation of high performance supramolecular polymer electrolytes and their application in flexible wearable devices and high energy density supercapacitors are also discussed in detail. In addition, at the end of this paper, the challenges of the supramolecular self-assembly strategy are summarized and the development of supramolecular-derived materials for supercapacitors is prospected.

Organogel delivery vehicles for the stabilization of organolithium reagents

Organolithium reagents are a vital tool in modern organic chemistry, enabling the synthesis of carbon-carbon bonds. However, due to their high reactivity, low temperatures, inert atmospheres and strictly dried solvents are usually necessary for their use. Here we report an encapsulating method for the stabilization of sensitive organolithium reagents-PhLi, n-BuLi and s-BuLi-in a low-cost hexatriacontane (C₃₆H₇₄) organogel. The use of this technology is showcased in nucleophilic addition reactions under ambient conditions, low-temperature bromine-lithium exchange, ortho-lithiation and C-H functionalization. The gel substantially enhances organolithium stability, allows simple storage, handling and delivery, and enables reproducible reagent portioning. The use of gels as easily divided delivery vehicles for hazardous organometallics has the potential to transform this area of synthetic chemistry, making these powerful reactions safer and more accessible to non-specialist researchers, and enabling the more widespread use of these common synthetic methods.

Recent Advances in Stimuli-Responsive Metallogels

Recently, stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels have received significant attention because their properties can be modulated through external stimuli such as heat, light, electricity, magnetic fields, mechanical stress, pH, ions, chemicals and enzymes. Among these gels, stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels have shown promising applications in material science because of their fascinating redox, optical, electronic and magnetic properties. In this review, research progress on stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels in recent years is systematically summarized. According to external stimulus sources, stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels, including chemical, physical and multiple stimuli-responsive metallogels, are discussed separately. Moreover, challenges, suggestions and opportunities regarding the development of novel stimuli-responsive metallogels are presented. We believe the knowledge and inspiration gained from this review will deepen the current understanding of stimuli-responsive smart metallogels and encourage more scientists to provide valuable contributions to this topic in the coming decades.

Self-healing cyclic peptide hydrogels

Hydrogels are soft materials of great interest in different areas such as chemistry, biology, and therapy. Gels made by the self-assembly of small molecules are known as supramolecular gels. The modulation of their properties by monomer molecular design is still difficult to predict due to the potential impact of subtle structural modifications in the self-assembly process. Herein, we introduce the design principles of a new family of self-assembling cyclic octapeptides of alternating chirality that can be used as scaffolds for the development of self-healing hydrogelator libraries with tunable properties. The strategy was used in the preparation of an amphiphilic cyclic peptide monomer bearing an alkoxyamine connector, which allowed the insertion of different aromatic aldehyde pendants to modulate the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance and fine-tune the properties of the resulting gel. The resulting amphiphiles were able to form self-healable hydrogels with viscoelastic properties (loss tangent, storage modulus), which were strongly dependent on the nature and number of aromatic moieties anchored to the hydrophilic peptide. Structural studies by SEM, STEM and AFM indicated that the structure of the hydrogels was based on a dense network of peptide nanotubes. Excellent agreement was established between the peptide primary structure, nanotube length distributions and viscoelastic behaviour.

Structural insights into self-assembly of a slow-evolving and mechanically robust supramolecular gel via time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering

The supramolecular assembly process is a widespread phenomenon found in both synthetically engineered and naturally occurring systems, such as colloids, liquid crystals and micelles. However, a basic understanding of the evolution of self-assembly processes over time remains elusive, primarily owing to the fast kinetics involved in these processes and the complex nature of the various non-covalent interactions operating simultaneously. With the help of a slow-evolving supramolecular gel derived from a urea-based gelator, we aim to capture the different stages of the self-assembly process commencing from nucleation. In particular, we are able to study the self-assembly in real time using time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) at length scales ranging from approximately 30 Å to 250 Å. Systems with and without sonication are compared simultaneously, to follow the different kinetic paths involved in these two cases. Time-dependent NMR, morphological and rheological studies act complementarily to the SANS data at sub-micron and bulk length scales. A hollow columnar formation comprising of gelator monomers arranged radially along the long axis of the fiber and solvent in the core is detected at the very early stage of the self-assembly process. While sonication promotes uniform growth of fibers and fiber entanglement, the absence of such a stimulus helps extensive bundle formation at a later stage and at the microscopic domain, making the gel system mechanically robust. The results of the present work provide a thorough understanding of the self-assembly process and reveal a path for fine-tuning such growth processes for applications such as the cosmetics industry, 3D printing ink development and paint industry.

Supramolecular polymer gels: from construction methods to functionality

Supramolecular polymer gels (SPGs) are precisely designed gels brought together by noncovalent interactions to form three-dimensional network structures of polymers. SPGs combine the merits of supramolecular polymers and gels, such as stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing, and self-adaptation, which endows SPGs with potential application value in the fields of biomaterials, etc. Recently, much effort has been made to design new SPGs and related materials with high performance. Herein, we review the research endeavor and future directions of SPGs depending on the construction methods, topological structures, stimuli-responsiveness, and functionality. We hope that the review will provide reference values for the researchers working in supramolecular chemistry and gels.

Self-Assembly of Alkylamido Isophthalic Acids toward the Design of a Supergelator: Phase-Selective Gelation and Dye Adsorption

A new series of 5-alkylamido isophthalic acid (ISA) derivatives with varying single and twin alkyl chain lengths were designed and synthesized as potential supramolecular organogelators. 5-alkylamido ISAs with linear or branched alkyl tail-groups of different lengths were effective gelators for low polarity solvents. In particular, among the presented series, a derivative with a branched, 24 carbon atom tail-group behaves as a “supergelator” with up to twenty organic solvents forming gels that are highly stable over time. The gelation behavior was analyzed using Hansen solubility parameters, and the thermal stability and viscoelastic properties of select gels were characterized. Microscopy, spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and computer modeling studies were consistent with a hierarchical self-assembly process involving the formation of cyclic H-bonded hexamers via the ISA carboxylic acid groups, which stack into elementary fibers stabilized by H-bonding of the amide linker groups and π–π stacking of the aromatic groups. These new nanomaterials exhibited potential for the phase-selective gelation of oil from oil–water mixtures and dye uptake from contaminated water. The work expands upon the design and synthesis of supramolecular self-assembled nanomaterials and their application in water purification/remediation.

4, 6-O-Phenylethylidene Acetal Protected D-Glucosamine Carbamate-Based Gelators and Their Applications for Multi-Component Gels

The self-assembly of carbohydrate-based low molecular weight gelators has led to useful advanced soft materials. The interactions of the gelators with various cations and anions are important in creating novel molecular architectures and expanding the scope of the small molecular gelators. In this study, a series of thirteen new C-2 carbamates of the 4,6-O-phenylethylidene acetal-protected D-glucosamine derivatives has been synthesized and characterized. These compounds are rationally designed from a common sugar template. All carbamates synthesized were found to be efficient gelators and three compounds are also hydrogelators. The resulting gels were characterized using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and rheology. The gelation mechanisms were further elucidated using ¹H NMR spectroscopy at different temperatures. The isopropyl carbamate hydrogelator 7 formed hydrogels at 0.2 wt% and also formed gels with several tetra alkyl ammonium salts, and showed effectiveness in the creation of gel electrolytes. The formation of metallogels using earth-abundant metal ions such as copper, nickel, iron, zinc, as well as silver and lead salts was evaluated for a few gelators. Using chemiluminescence spectroscopy, the metal–organic xerogels showed enzyme-like properties and enhanced luminescence for luminol. In addition, we also studied the applications of several gels for drug immobilizations and the gels showed sustained release of naproxen from the gel matrices. This robust sugar carbamate-derived gelator system can be used as the scaffold for the design of other functional materials with various types of applications.

Polyoxometalate-Containing Supramolecular Gels

Supramolecular gels are important soft materials with various applications, which are fabricated through hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic or host-guest interactions. Introducing functional groups, especially inorganic components, is an efficient strategy to obtain gels with robust architecture and high performance. Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a class of negatively-charged clusters, have defined structures and multiple interaction sites, resulting in their potential as building blocks for constructing POM-containing supramolecular gels. The introduction of POMs into gels not only provides strong driving forces for the formation of gels due to the characteristics of charged cluster and oxygen-rich surface, but also brings new properties sourcing from unique electronic structures of POMs. Though many POM-containing gels have been reported, a comprehensive review is still absent. Herein, the concept of POM-containing gels is discussed, following with the design strategies and driving forces. To better understand the results in the literature, detailed examples, which are classified into several categories based on the types of organic components, are presented to illustrate the gelation process and gel structures. Moreover, applications of POM-containing gels in energy chemistry, sustainable chemistry and other aspects are also reviewed, as well as the future developments of this field. Supramolecular Strategies for the Recycling of Homogeneous Catalysts

Supramolecular approaches are increasingly used in the development of homogeneous catalysts and they also provide interesting new tools for the recycling of metal-based catalysts. Various non-covalent interactions have been utilized for the immobilization homogeneous catalysts on soluble and insoluble support. By non-covalent anchoring the supported catalysts obtained can be recovered via (nano-) filtration or such catalytic materials can be used in continuous flow reactors. Specific benefits from the reversibility of catalyst immobilization by non-covalent interactions include the possibility to re-functionalize the support material and the use as "boomerang" type catalyst systems in which the catalyst is captured after a homogeneous reaction. In addition, new reactor design with implemented recycling strategies becomes possible, such as a reverse-flow adsorption reactor (RFA) that combines a homogeneous reactor with selective catalyst adsorption/desorpion. Next to these non-covalent immobilization strategies, supramolecular chemistry can also be used to generate the support, for example by generation of self-assembled gels with catalytic function. Although the stability is a challenging issue, some self-assembled gel materials have been successfully utilized as reusable heterogeneous catalysts. In addition, catalytically active coordination cages, which are frequently used to achieve specific activity or selectivity, can be bound to support by ionic interactions or can be prepared in structured solid materials. These new heterogenized cage materials also have been used successfully as recyclable catalysts.

Enantioselective Gel Phase Synthesis of Metal-Organic Materials

We report the asymmetric synthesis of homochiral metal-organic materials (MOMs) in chiral gels from achiral components. The enantioselectivity of MOMs depends on the chirality of the gel, whereas the synthesis performed in solution phase and achiral gels resulted in conglomerates.

Quinoline-cored Poly(Aryl Ether) Dendritic Organogels with Multiple Stimuli-Responsive and Adsorptive Properties

Functional supramolecular gel materials have potential applications in sensors, optical switches, artificial antennae, drug delivery and so on. In this paper, quinoline-cored poly(aryl ether) dendritic organogelators were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. The gelation behaviour of the dendritic organogelator was tested in organic solvents, mixed solvents and ionic liquids. The dendron Q-G1 was found to be an efficient and versatile organogelator toward various apolar and polar organic solvents with the critical gelation concentrations (CGCs) approaching 1.2×10^-2  mol/L, indicating one dendritic organogelator could immobilize 1.2×10³ solvent molecules in the organogel network. Interestingly, these dendrons exhibited excellent gel formation in ionic liquids. Notably, these dendritic organogels were found to display multiple stimuli-responsive properties toward external stimuli including heat, ultrasound and shear stress, with a reversible sol-gel phase transition. In addition, the dendritic organogel could effectively adsorb heavy metals and organic dyes. The removal rate of Pb²⁺ was up to 20% and the adsorption rate for Rhodamine B was as high as 89%.

Making and Breaking of Gels: Stimuli-Responsive Properties of Bis(Pyridyl-N-oxide Urea) Gelators

The structural modification of existing supramolecular architecture is an efficient strategy to design and synthesize supramolecular gels with tunable and predictable properties. In this work, we have modified bis(pyridyl urea) compounds with different linkers, namely hexylene and butylene, to their corresponding bis(pyridyl-N-oxide urea). The gelation properties of both the parent and the modified compounds were studied, and the results indicated that modification of the 3-pyridyl moieties to the corresponding 3-pyridyl-N-oxides induced hydrogelation. The stability of the parent and modified compounds were evaluated by sol-gel transition temperature (T_gel) and rheological measurements, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to analyze the solid-state interactions of the gelators. The morphologies of the dried gels were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed that the structural modification did not induce any prominent effect on the gel morphology. The stimuli-responsive behavior of these gels in the presence of salts in DMSO/water was evaluated by rheological experiments, which indicated that the modified compounds displayed enhanced gel strength in most cases. However, the gel network collapsed in the presence of the chloride salts of aluminum(III), zinc(II), copper(II), and cadmium(II). The mechanical strength of the parent gels decreased in the presence of salts, indicating that the structural modification resulted in robust gels in most cases. The modified compounds formed gels below minimum gel concentration in the presence of various salts, indicating salt-induced gelation. These results show the making and breaking ability of the gel network in the presence of external stimuli (salts), which explains the potential of using LMWGs based on N-oxide moieties as stimuli-responsive materials.

Gelation of a Pentapeptide in Alcohols

Properties of solvents such as polarity and H-bond-forming ability are critical for the formation of an organogel and have a significant impact on the gel behavior, as solvents are the majority of organogel systems. However, so far, there is still a lack of systematic studies regarding the effects of molecular structures of solvents on the characteristics of organogels. Motivated by revealing such a relationship, in this paper, we studied the morphologies of assemblies, gelation behaviors, and secondary structures of a pentapeptide termed EAF-5 in a wide variety of alcohols. The side chains and lengths of carbon chains of the solvent molecules were found to play a critical role in the self-assembly and gelation of EAF-5. EAF-5 was capable of self-assembling into fibers and entangling into a network in alcohols including ethanol, propanol, butanol, n-pentanol, and n-hexanol, which further immobilized the corresponding alcohols to form gels. In these organogels, increasing β-sheet secondary structures of the peptides were formed by introducing side chains and extending the length of primary alcohol molecules. We hypothesized that alcohol molecules with extended lengths and side chains reduced the gelator-solvent interactions and promoted the gelator-gelator interactions, resulting in the self-assembly of EAF-5 into fibril structures and development of gels. These findings provide a new sight into the interactions between gelators and solvents and are helpful for designing peptide-based organogelators.

Synthesis of a Stable Benzoxazole Gel from an Imine Gel for Adsorption and Catalysis

Developing stable gel materials for adsorption and catalysis is one of the major themes of gel materials. However, it has been proven to be challenging to achieve them from small molecules. Herein, an imine gel is developed from tetra-aldehyde 4-{2,2-bis[(4-formylphenoxy)methyl]-3-(4-formylphenoxy)propoxy}benzaldehyde (A4) and 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine (B2) based on dynamic covalent chemistry. The unstable A4B2-imine gel is further converted into a stable aromatic benzoxazole-linked A4B2-benzoxazole gel via oxidative cyclization, which has significantly improved chemical stability under acidic and basic conditions. Benefiting from the stability under acidic conditions, the A4B2-benzoxazole gel is used for Pd(II) adsorption and the adsorption capacity is 250 mg g^-1. After PdCl₂ immersion and reduction, palladium nanoparticles with a size distribution of 1.3-14.7 nm are encapsulated by the network structure of the stable porous benzoxazole gel matrix. The Pd@A4B2-benzoxazole gel exhibits high catalytic activity toward the reduction of toxic hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) (reaction rate constant = 0.0377 min^-1), while there is no significant decrease in the catalytic efficiency after five cycles.

A multi-responsive organogel and colloid based on the self-assembly of a Ag(i)-azopyridine coordination polymer

In this work, through the coordination of C₃ symmetric azopyridine ligands and Ag(i), coordination polymers with azo groups on the main chain were prepared. The trans coordination polymer formed an organogel with a network of nanofibers at low critical gelation concentrations, and it exhibited the abilities of self-healing and multi-stimuli response to heating, light, mechanical shearing, and chemicals due to the presence of dynamic coordinating bonds. On the other hand, the cis coordination polymer was found to assemble into nanoparticles to give a responsive colloid, which can produce fibrous precipitation in several days upon visible light irradiation due to the isomerization of the azo groups. This work provides a novel example for the design of a multi-responsive organogel and colloid based on the structural transformation of coordination polymers.

Copper Catalyzed Decarboxylative Functionalization of Ketoacids

Selective copper catalyzed activation of ketoacids and notably bio-sourced 1,3-acetonedicarboxylic acid, represents an attractive strategy to solve key synthetic challenges. Condensation with aldehydes under exceedingly mild conditions can create more rapidly known natural products scaffolds such as 1,3 polyols. In this account, the recent progress in this field, notably through multicatalytic combination with organocatalysis is described. In addition to the rapid preparation of natural product fragments, cascade incorporation of fluorine also provided new type of synthetic analogues of improved properties in a broad range of applications.

Ag-Induced metallogel based on cyclooctatetrathiophene: structural characterization and stimuli-responsive properties

Based on saddle-shaped cyclooctathiophene (COTh) as a building block, ligands 2 and 3 were synthesized bearing 3- or 4-substituted pyridyl groups as coordination groups, which showed strong gelation abilities with AgBF4 in several solvents at room temperature. This Ag+-induced metallogel exhibited outstanding stimuli-responsive properties upon addition of halogen ions, acetonitrile or H2O.

A V(iii)-induced metallogel with solvent stimuli-responsive properties: structural proof-of-concept with MD simulations

A new solvent stimuli-responsive metallogel (VGel) was synthesized through the introduction of vanadium ions into an adenine (Ade) and 1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylic acid (BTC) organogel, and its supramolecular self-assembly was investigated from a computational viewpoint. A relationship between the synthesized VGel integrity and the self-assembly of its components is demonstrated by a broad range of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, an aspect that has not yet been explored for such a complex metallogel in particular. MD simulations and Voronoi tessellation assessments, both in agreement with experimental data, confirm the gel formation. Based on excellent water stability and the ethanol/methanol stimuli-responsive feature of the VGel an easy-to-use visualization assay for the detection of counterfeit liquor with a 6% (v/v) methanol limit of detection in 40% (v/v) ethanol is reported. These observations provide a cheap and technically simple method and are a step towards the immersible screening of similar molecules in methanol-spiked beverages.

Zirconium-based metal-organic framework gels for selective luminescence sensing

Metal–organic gelation represents a promising approach to fabricate functional nanomaterials. Herein a series of Zr-carboxylate gels are synthesized from rigid pyrene, porphyrin and tetraphenyl ethylene-derived tetracarboxylate linkers, namely Zr-TBAPy (H₄TBAPy = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-carboxylphenyl)pyrene), Zr-TCPE (H₄TCPE = 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene), and Zr-TCPP (H₄TCPP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin). The gels are aggregated from metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles. Zr-TBAPy gel consists of NU-901 nanoparticles, and Zr-TCPP gel consists of PCN-224 nanoparticles. The xerogels show high surface areas up to 1203 m² g⁻¹. MOF gel films are also anchored on the butterfly wing template to yield Zr-MOF/B composites. Zr-TBAPy and Zr-TCPE gels are luminescent for solution-phase sensing and vapour-phase sensing of volatile organic compounds, and exhibit a significant luminescence quenching effect for electron-deficient analytes. Arising from the high porosity and good dispersion of luminescent MOF gels, rapid and effective vapour-sensing of nitrobenzene and 2-nitrotoluene within 30 s has been achieved via Zr-TBAPy film or Zr-TBAPy/B.

Zr-based MOF nanomaterials are developed via a metal–organic gelation method for rapid and effective luminescence vapour-sensing.

Synthesis of Dendritic Glycoclusters and Their Applications for Supramolecular Gelation and Catalysis

Glycoclusters with three, four, and six arms of glycosyl triazoles were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The self-assembling properties of these molecules and their catalytic activity as ligands in copper-catalyzed azide and alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions were studied. The compounds with a lower number of branches exhibit excellent gelation properties and can function as supramolecular gelators. The resulting gels were characterized using optical microcopy and atomic force microscopy. The glycoconjugates containing six branches showed significant catalytic activity for copper sulfate mediated cycloaddition reactions. In aqueous solutions, 1 mol % of glycoclusters to substrates was efficient at accelerating these reactions. Several trimeric compounds were found to be capable of forming co-gels with the catalytically active hexameric compounds. Using the organogels formed by the glycoconjugates as supramolecular catalysts, efficient catalysis was demonstrated for several CuAAC reactions. The metallogels with CuSO₄ were also prepared as gel columns, which can be reused for the cycloaddition reactions several times. These include the preparation of a few glycosyl triazoles and aryl triazoles and isoxazoles. We expect that these sugar-based soft biomaterials will have applications beyond supramolecular catalysis for copper-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions. They may also be useful as ligands or gel matrixes for other metal-ion catalyzed organic reactions.

Protonation-Triggered Supramolecular Gel from Macrocyclic Diacetylene: Gelation Behavior, Topochemical Polymerization, and Colorimetric Response

Supramolecular gels originating from the hierarchical self-assembly of low molecular weight organic molecules is a strongly emerging field of advanced material research for the fabrication of soft functional materials. Herein, a novel supramolecular gel was fabricated through the protonation-triggered unidirectional self-assembly of pyridine-attached macrocyclic diacetylene (PyMCDA). Basic nitrogen of a pyridine ring with a strong affinity toward proton transforms the neutral PyMCDA into gelator in its protonated pyridinium salt form (PyMCDA-H⁺), which further evolves to nano-fibrillar networks to yield a supramolecular gel. Under the irradiation of UV light, the white color gel turned to a robust covalently cross-linked blue-phase PDA gel. Interestingly, polymeric PyMCPDA-H⁺ gel exhibits a naked-eye detectable reversible blue-red colorimetric response for alternating acid/base (H₂SO₄/NH₄OH) and colorimetric sensitivity toward selected anions: CH₃COO^-, CN^-, HCOO^-, and CH₃CH₂COO^-. It is with the hope that this work point toward the utility and versatility of macrocyclic PDAs for constructing chromogenic supramolecular gels for their possible use in sensing systems.

Role of N-Oxide Moieties in Tuning Supramolecular Gel-State Properties

The role of specific interactions in the self-assembly process of low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) was studied by altering the nonbonding interactions responsible for gel formation via structural modification of the gelator/nongelator. This was achieved by modifying pyridyl moieties of bis(pyridyl) urea-based hydrogelator (4–BPU) and the isomer (3–BPU) to pyridyl N–oxide compounds (L₁ and L₂, respectively). The modification of the functional groups resulted in the tuning of the gelation properties of the parent gelator, which induced/enhanced the gelation properties. The modified compounds displayed better mechanical and thermal stabilities and the introduction of the N–oxide moieties had a prominent effect on the morphologies of the gel network, which was evident from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The effect of various interactions due to the introduction of N–oxide moieties in the gel network formation was analyzed by comparing the solid-state interactions of the compounds using single crystal X-ray diffraction and computational studies, which were correlated with the enhanced gelation properties. This study shows the importance of specific nonbonding interactions and the spatial arrangement of the functional groups in the supramolecular gel network formation.

Sub-nanoscaled Metal Oxide Cluster-Integrated Polymer Network for Quasi-Homogeneous Catalysis

The simultaneous improvement of catalytic activity and recyclability of metal oxides is exciting, however challenging, due to the paradox for particle size requirements. Herein, we report the design of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) by covalently integrating a sub-nanoscaled metal oxide cluster (∼0.7 nm) into a polymer network with superelasticity. Due to the ultrasmall sizes of loaded clusters and the high swelling ratios (SRs) of PNCs, the swelled organogels from PNCs claim similar catalytic efficiencies to homogeneous catalysts, while their recyclability can be simply achieved after the catalytic reactions. Thanks to their robust mechanical properties, the PNCs can be processed into microgel particles for column reactors, enabling large-scale and continuous-flow catalysis.
