Enhancing the stereoselectivity of Me 2GaOR(NHC) species in the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide, with the help of the chelation effect. RSC Adv 2024; 14:28638-28647. Abstract
Using dialkylgallium alkoxides with N-hetrocyclic carbenes (Me2GaOR(NHC)) for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide, we have demonstrated the effect of the chelate interaction between the growing PLA chain and gallium on the stereoselectivity of dialkylgallium alkoxide propagating species - Me2Ga(OPLA)(NHC). In order to do so, we have conducted the structure-activity studies of both Me2Ga(OCH2CH2OMe)(NHC) (NHC = SIMes (1) and IMes (2)) and Me2Ga(OCH(Me)CO2Me)(NHC) (NHC = SIMes (3) and IMes (4)), the latter mimicking active species in the ROP of lactide with growing PLA chain. Based on VT NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, the effect of toluene, CH2Cl2 and THF on the structure of 3 and 4 have been demonstrated, especially with regard to the interaction of methyl lactate ligand with gallium. In a combination with the latter, the studies on the activity of 1 and 2 in the ROP of rac-LA, in different solvents, and at temperatures between -40 °C and 40 °C, have shown the extent of the chelation effect on the isoselectivity of Me2Ga(OPLA)(NHC) in the ROP of rac-LA, which varied between P m of 0.75 and 0.89 depending on the polymerization conditions. Both the latter, and the contribution resulting from the structure of Me2Ga(OPLA)(NHC) (P m = 0.75) have been decisive for the total isoselectivity observed under specific conditions. Our finding represents the first evidence demonstrating that the chelation effect, resulting from the weak interaction between the growing PLA chain and the metal centre, can be responsible for the enhancement of stereoselectivity in the ROP of rac-LA with metal alkoxide propagating species. It should remain of interest, especially in the case of metal based catalysts, which are able to carry out the stereoselective polymerization of rac-LA at mild conditions, under which the chelation effect can manifest itself.

Abstract
Homo- and heteroleptic ketodiiminate zinc complexes L12Zn2 (1, L1 = [Me2NC2H4NC(Me)CH]2CO), L2(ZnCp)2 (2, L2 = [Me2NC3H6NC(Me)CH]2CO, Cp = C5H5) and L2HZnCp* (3, Cp* = C5Me5) were synthesized and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as by elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD, 2, 3). The catalytical activity of heteroleptic complexes 2 and 3 were tested in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of l-lactide. Homobimetallic complex 2 showed the highest activity and selectivity for the synthesis of cyclic polylactide (cPLLA; TOF = 17 460 h-1) at 100 °C in toluene solution, while linear polymers are formed with mononuclear complex 3.

Abstract
As a representative class of sustainable polymer materials, biodegradable polymers have attracted increasing interest in recent years. Despite significant advance of related polymerization techniques, realizing high sequence-control and easy-handling in ring-opening (co)polymerizations still remains a central challenge. To this end, a promising solution is the development of valence-variable metal-based catalysts for redox-induced switchable polymerization of cyclic esters, cyclic ethers, epoxides, and CO2 . Through a valence-determined electron effect, the switch between different catalytically active states as well as dormant state contributes to convenient formation of polymer products with desired microstructures and various practical performances. This redox-controlled switchable strategy for controlled synthesis of polymers is overviewed in this Review with a focus on potential applications and challenges for further studies.

Abstract
We report herein the synthesis and full characterizations of the first examples of gallium complexes based on "privileged" aminobisphenolate ligands which are easily available. These complexes turned out to be extremely active in the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone even at room temperature and highly active in the ROP of L-lactide. The combination of factors such as the easy availability of these compounds and the supposedly low toxicity, together with the extremely high activity in ROP, allows us to consider these compounds as suitable for use on an industrial scale for the synthesis of biodegradable polymers for biomedical applications.

Abstract
This review highlights recent developments in the field of biodegradable polymeric materials intended to replace non-degradable conventional plastics, focusing on studies from the last ten years involving the stereoselective ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters. This encompasses exciting advances in both catalyst design and monomer scope. Notably, the last decade has seen the emergence of metal-free stereocontrolled ROP for instance, as well as the synthesis and stereocontrolled polymerization of new types of chiral monomers. This study will emphasize recent stereoselective polymerization catalysts and chiral monomers and will focus on stereocontrol quantification, the mechanisms of stereocontrol and their differentiation if reported and studied for a specific catalyst system.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry and the activities in the ring-opening polymerization catalysis of racemic lactide (LA) of magnesium complexes of a series of {ONNN}-type sequential monoanionic ligands are described. All ligands include pyridyl and substituted-phenolate as peripheral groups. The ligands bearing either chiral or meso-bipyrrolidine cores led to single diastereomeric complexes, whereas the ligands bearing a diaminoethane core led to diastereomer mixtures. All {ONNN}Mg-X complexes [X=Cl, HMDS (hexamethyldisilazide)] led to highly active and isoselective catalysts. The complexes bearing the chiral bipyrrolidine core exhibited the highest activities (full consumption of 5000 equiv. of rac-LA at RT within 5 min) and highest isoselectivities (Pm =0.91), as well as a living character. The complexes of the meso-bipyrrolidine based ligands were almost as active and slightly less stereoselective, while those of the diaminoethane based ligands exhibited reduced activities and isoselectivities.

Abstract
![]()
A unique
method of bisphenol/bisnaphthol synthesis is being proposed,
serendipitously discovered in the course of the careful analysis of
an aminophenol methylation reaction. The insightful exploration of
the synthesis of N- or O-methylated species, originating from functionalized
phenols obtained by a conventional strategy, provided the opportunity
to discover an unexpected reaction pathway yielding various bisphenols.
Sodium complexes were found to be crucial intermediates in the synthetic
scenario. Their formation, which is usually an imperceptive step,
was substantial for the productive outcome of functional group protection.
Thorough exploration revealed an essential structural motif of aminophenolate,
necessary for the successful outcome of the reaction, and also enabled
establishing the limitations of the new method. The work demonstrated
that a slight change in the perspective and close inspection of the
synthetic nuances can answer the important question concerning what
a specific target-oriented synthesis strategy is lacking. The protection of the hydroxyl group of aminophenols with
use of MeI—a general and, in many cases, excellent methylation
reagent—was investigated. In-depth understanding of the mechanistic
aspects of methyl protective group incorporation provided a practical
guide for its application in organic synthesis, but it also opened
a new route for the synthesis of an original group of bisphenols.
