Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Refractive and ocular motor anomalies may be more prevalent among autistic adults without learning disabilities, compared to a non-autistic clinical population. In line with current guidance, optometrists should exclude these anomalies prior to prescribing tinted lenses. BACKGROUND Autistic adults report various visual experiences with largely negative consequences on daily living. Some of these overlap with symptoms of refractive and ocular motor anomalies. Therefore, this study investigated refractive and ocular motor status, and pattern glare, in autistic adults without learning disabilities. The impact of appropriate treatment on visual experiences was explored. METHODS Twenty four autistic adults, aged 19-67 years, underwent an eye examination involving refraction, ocular motor and pattern glare assessments. Based on pre-determined criteria, anomalies were treated with spectacles, orthoptic exercises, or tinted lenses. Participants completed three questionnaires (Glasgow Sensory Questionnaire, Visual Function Index and Convergence Insufficiency Symptoms Survey) at the start and end of the study to assess the impact of treatment. RESULTS Relative to population norms, a notable proportion of participants had: a significant change in refractive correction (83.3%); accommodative infacility (72.7%); convergence insufficiency (37.5%); uncompensated distance dissociated heterophoria (33.3%); significant accommodative inaccuracy (27.2%); and positive pattern glare (25%). All participants required treatment. 16.7% were given orthoptic exercises only. New spectacles were dispensed to 79.2%, followed by 16.7% requiring orthoptic exercises and 4.2% dispensed tinted lenses. Questionnaire scores did not significantly change post-treatment. CONCLUSION This exploratory study suggests autistic adults may be more likely to present with refractive, ocular motor and pattern glare issues. Impacts on autistic visual sensory experiences, vision-related quality of life and visual function remain unclear. Pattern Glare Test scores of autistic adults appear to be reduced by appropriate refractive and/or ocular motor management. Therefore, optometrists should take a conservative approach, managing refraction and ocular motor status of autistic patients prior to considering tinted lenses.

Abstract
The search for robust, reliable biomarkers of schizophrenia remains a high priority in psychiatry. Biomarkers are valuable because they can reveal the underlying mechanisms of symptoms and monitor treatment progress and may predict future risk of developing schizophrenia. Despite the existence of various promising biomarkers that relate to symptoms across the schizophrenia spectrum, and despite published recommendations encouraging multivariate metrics, they are rarely investigated simultaneously within the same individuals. In those with schizophrenia, the magnitude of purported biomarkers is complicated by comorbid diagnoses, medications and other treatments. Here, we argue three points. First, we reiterate the importance of assessing multiple biomarkers simultaneously. Second, we argue that investigating biomarkers in those with schizophrenia-related traits (schizotypy) in the general population can accelerate progress in understanding the mechanisms of schizophrenia. We focus on biomarkers of sensory and working memory in schizophrenia and their smaller effects in individuals with nonclinical schizotypy. Third, we note irregularities across research domains leading to the current situation in which there is a preponderance of data on auditory sensory memory and visual working memory, but markedly less in visual (iconic) memory and auditory working memory, particularly when focusing on schizotypy where data are either scarce or inconsistent. Together, this review highlights opportunities for researchers without access to clinical populations to address gaps in knowledge. We conclude by highlighting the theory that early sensory memory deficits contribute negatively to working memory and vice versa. This presents a mechanistic perspective where biomarkers may interact with one another and impact schizophrenia-related symptoms.

Abstract
Although previous research has investigated altered sensory reactivity in autistic individuals, there has been no specific focus on visual sensory experiences, particularly in adults. Using qualitative methods, this study aimed to characterize autistic visual sensory symptoms, contextualize their impact and document any associated coping strategies. A total of 18 autistic adults took part in four focus groups which involved questions around visual experiences, the impact of these on daily life, and strategies for their reduction. Transcripts of each session were thematically analyzed allocating six key themes. Participants described a range of visual hypersensitivities, including to light, motion, patterns and particular colors, which contributed to distraction and were frequently part of a wider multisensory issue. Such experiences had significant negative impacts on personal wellbeing and daily life with participants describing fatigue, stress and hindrances on day-to-day activities (e.g., travel and social activities). However, the degree of understanding that participants had about their visual experiences influenced their emotional response, with greater understanding reducing concern. Participants employed a variety of coping strategies to overcome visual sensory experiences but with varied success. Discussions also highlighted that there may be a poor public understanding of sensory issues in autism affecting how well autistic individuals are able manage their sensory symptoms. In summary, autistic adults expressed significant concern about their visual experiences and there is a need to improve understanding of visual experiences on a personal and public level as well as for developing potential support.

Abstract
A masked randomised control design compared the effectiveness of precision ophthalmic tints in improving the recognition of emotion in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Fourteen children aged 10-14 with ASD and 14 control children matched on verbal and non-verbal IQ, wore spectacles with coloured lenses to complete two tasks that involved the observation of coloured video sequences in which social interactions were depicted. On one occasion (randomly first or second) the coloured lenses provided light of a colour that the child had one month previously selected as optimal for the clarity of text. On the other occasion the lenses differed in CIE UCS chromaticity by 0.077. Performance in the ASD group was superior in both social interaction tasks with the lenses that provided the optimal colour of light.

Abstract
This study analyzed the effects of spectral overlays on ocular motility during reading among a clinical group of children and adolescents experiencing visual–perceptual distortions of text. We reviewed the records of 323 eye-hospital patients diagnosed with visual stress and divided this participant sample into two age-based cohorts: children ( n = 184; Mean [ M] age = 10.1, standard deviation [ SD] = 1.3 years) and adolescents ( n = 139; M age = 14.6, SD = 1.5 years). We used a Visagraph III Eye-Movement Recording System to record ocular motor efficiency while reading with and without spectral overlays, and we examined the following parameters: (a) Fixations, (b) Regressions, (c) Span of Recognition, (d) Reading Rate, (e) Relative Efficiency, and (f) Comprehension. Our results showed that using one or some combination of 10 participant-selected spectral overlays immediately and significantly ( p < .001) reduced the number of Fixations and Regressions per 100 words, while there were significant ( p < .001) gains in positive factors such as Span of Recognition, Reading Rate, Relative Efficiency, and Comprehension. Our findings indicate that spectral filtering can be an effective tool for helping many young patients who experience visual–perceptual distortions while reading. Future expanded research employing eye-tracking technology is clearly needed.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by a variety of social and non-social behavioral deficits. One potential mechanism that could unify this diverse profile of behaviors is slower processing speed. Seventy-six high-functioning adults with ASD were compared to 64 matched controls on standardized measures of processing speed. Participants with ASD were significantly slower on all measures, and on the composite score from the three tests (d's > .65). ASD participants with slower processing speeds scored higher on the ADOS Communication and Reciprocal Social Interaction scale (r = .34). These findings provide evidence of slower processing speeds in adults with ASD, and that this may be contributing to impairments in social communication skills. Interventions that improve processing speed might improve social communication abilities in ASD.

Abstract
Websites figure predominantly in everyday life. However, many websites remain inaccessible to autistic people, and existing efforts to improve accessibility are in early stages, do not directly include autistic users in their development, or have not been empirically evaluated. The Academic Autism Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE) used a community-based participatory research approach to create a website to improve health care access for autistic adults. We used the creation of that website as a "living laboratory" to develop the AASPIRE Web Accessibility Guidelines for Autistic Web Users. Our guidelines are grounded in accessibility theory, had autistic end-user involvement at all stages, and were empirically evaluated through a usability study and evaluation surveys. We incorporated what we learned into the design of the website, and compiled the accessibility information into a set of guidelines. The guidelines offer recommendations for increasing the physical, intellectual, and social acceptability of websites for use by autistic adults. In the evaluation of the website by 170 autistic end users, nearly all indicated it was easy to use (97%), easy to understand (95%), important (97%), and useful (96%). Ninety-two percent would recommend it to a friend, and 95% would recommend it to a health care provider. There were no significant associations between usability or understandability and education level, receipt of help using the site, browser type (e.g., IE or Safari), or device type (e.g., PC or tablet). We recommend using the guidelines to improve website accessibility for autistic Internet users. Lay Summary AASPIRE Web Accessibility Guideline: This guideline is a summary of the accessibility features we identified and implemented during the course of our study. None of these items were difficult or expensive for us to implement. They did not require special expertise beyond basic web programming and technical communications skills. We recommend that anyone seeking to create accessible websites for autistic users follow the Academic Autism Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE) Web Accessibility Guideline in addition to broader web and communications standards and principles.Physical accessibility:Provide at least one low-contrast neutral color palette option to accommodate sensitive vision.Provide a selection of color palettes, including one with a dark background and one with a light background, again to accommodate color and contrast sensitivity.Provide a no-style option (i.e., no cascading style sheets (CSS) to accommodate browser customization and users who prefer no stylistic formatting.Provide simple consistent navigation and highly consistent site behavior for increased ease of operation.Avoid textured backgrounds, moving images, decorative elements that do not convey information, and other visual and/or sonic "clutter"; these types of elements may make the site difficult or impossible to comprehend.Provide smaller font sizes in addition to larger ones; large font sizes may make the page appear cluttered and difficult to read.Use a plain accessible sans-serif font (e.g., Arial) for ease of readability.Intellectual accessibility:Use the simplest interface possible for ease of understanding.Use simple concrete icons or images to communicate redundant information with text, and accommodate multiple ways of understanding information.Clearly label site elements with their purpose everywhere on the site, even if it seems redundant, to make navigation and site functionality easier to follow.Provide concrete examples where applicable to accommodate difficulties in understanding abstractions or generalizations.Minimize scrolling so the user does not need to rely on assumptions about content to guess what might be on the page.Show all important features and site navigation (as opposed to within combo box drop-down areas) so the user does not need to rely on assumptions to guess whether the item exists and how to access it. For example, completely visible list boxes or radio buttons can be used instead of combo boxes.Make content as short as possible without sacrificing precision and specificity, to reduce cognitive burden.Social accessibility:Be specific and precise in language use; avoid colloquialisms, idioms, and ambiguity to accommodate difficulties with language pragmatics.Explain the reason behind any nonstandard instructions or unusual information; provide additional pragmatic context to accommodate difficulties with language pragmatics.Provide alternatives to definitive response items on surveys and forms, for example, "do not know," "do not wish to say," or "not applicable," to reduce frustration for not being able to produce an exact answer.Use FAQ formats to organize complex information to enhance clarity as to why the information might be useful to the user and how it connects to their life.Define terms that might have different meanings depending on social context, or which might be jargon related to a specialized field (e.g., "drug interactions" and "health care providers"), to accommodate difficulties with language pragmatics.Be mindful of autistic culture and community preferences, including the language used to describe autism and how community-based symbols and history might influence content and perception of site credibility.
