Microalgae Photo-Protectants and Related Bio-Carriers Loaded with Bioactive Entities for Skin Applications—An Insight of Microalgae Biotechnology

Microalgae are photosynthetic organisms known for producing valuable metabolites under different conditions such as extreme temperatures, high salinity, osmotic pressure, and ultraviolet radiation. In recent years, these metabolites have become a trend due to their versatility in applications such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and others. They have even been proposed as an alternative source of bioactive metabolites to avoid the harmful effects on the environment produced by active compounds such as oxybenzone in commercials sunscreens. One of the most studied applications is the use of microalgae for skin care and topical use as cosmeceuticals. With the increasing demand for more environmentally friendly products in cosmetics, microalgae have been further explored in relation to this application. It has been shown that some microalgae are resistant to UV rays due to certain compounds such as mycosporine-like amino acids, sporopollenin, scytonemin, and others. These compounds have different mechanisms of action to mitigate UV damage induced. Still, they all have been proven to confer UV tolerance to microalgae with an absorbance spectrum like the one in conventional sunscreens. This review focuses on the use of these microalgae compounds obtained by UV stimulation and takes advantage of their natural UV-resistant characteristics to potentially apply them as an alternative for UV protection products.

Mechanistic understanding and potential application of electrospraying in food processing: a review

Electrospraying (ESPR) is a cost effective, flexible, and facile method that has been used in the pharmaceutical industry, and thanks to its wide variety of uses such as bioactive compound encapsulation, micronization, and food product coating, which have received a great attention in the food market. It uses a jet of polymer solution for processing food and food-derived products. Droplet size can be extremely small up to nanometers and can be regulated by altering applied voltage and flow rate. Compared to conventional techniques, it is simple, cost effective, uses less solvent and products are obtained in one step with a very high encapsulation efficiency (EE). Encapsulation provided using it protects bioactives from moisture, thermal, oxidative, and mechanical stresses, and thus provides them a good storage stability which will help in increasing the application of these ingredients in food formulation. This technique has an enormous potential for increasing the shelf life of fruit and vegetables through coating and improvement of eating quality. This study is aimed at overviewing the operating principles of ESPR, working parameters, applications, and advantages in the food sector. The article also covers new ESPR techniques like supercritical assisted ESPR and ESPR assisted by pressurized gas (EAPG) which have high yield as compared to conventional ESPR. This article is enriched with good information for research and development in ESPR techniques for development of novel foods.

Microalgal Bioprocess Toward the Production of Microalgal Oil Loaded Bovine Serum Albumin Nanoparticles

Microalgal biotechnology has increased rapidly owing to have high value bioactive compounds and numerous consumer products that can be utilized from microalgae. With the development of novel cultivation and processing methods, microalgal biotechnology can meet the high demands of food, energy and pharmaceutical industries. In this context, especially for food and pharmaceutical applications, encapsulation of microalgal bioactive compounds is carried out to protect the compound from oxidation and degradation. In this study, a microalgal production process was carried out and microalgal oil loaded bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticle production using glucose as cross-linking agent was investigated. The influences of different process parameters such as initial BSA concentration, glucose concentration and desolvation temperature on the size of BSA nanoparticles were investigated to achieve very small size nanoparticles. Furthermore, data obtained from the experiments were assessed statistically to model the process. It was found that the obtained nanoparticles showed spherical shape with the mean particle size of around 200-300 nm with zeta potential of about - 23 mV. Also, stability test showed that, there was not any change in particle size for one month storage and nanoparticle structure enhance the protection of microalgae oil from oxidation. At last, antibacterial effect of nanoparticles was presented against E. coli ATCC 8739 and L. monocytogenes ATCC 13932. In here, we demonstrated a microalgal bioprocess which consists of microalgae production to obtain microalgal oil riched in bioactive and, encapsulation of microalgal oil to protect it from environmental conditions.
