Enhancing pectin extraction from orange peel through citric acid-assisted optimization based on a dual response

Pectin is widely used in several products in the industry. Conventionally, strong and harmful acids are used for its extraction. This study optimized the extraction of orange peel's pectin using citric acid, considering yield and degree of esterification (DE) as response variables. Proximal analyses were performed, and the samples were subjected to a Box-Behnken design on three central points, considering as variables the temperature, time, and pH. The results of proximate analyses of the orange peels revealed 11.76 % moisture content, 87.26 % volatiles, 0.09 % ash, 50.45 % soluble carbohydrates, 70.60 % total carbohydrates, 0.89 % fixed carbon, 5.35 % lipids, and 36.75 mg GAE/g of phenolic compounds. The resulting second-order polynomial model described the relation of the input and output variables related to each other. The best performance to obtain a higher yield (18.18 %) of high methoxyl pectin (DE 50 %) was set at 100 °C/30 min/pH 2.48. Pectin showed antioxidant properties by ABTS and DPPH assays and similar thermal properties to the commercial polymer. Its equivalent weight was 1219.51 mol/g, and the methoxyl and anhydrouronic acid were 2.23 and 67.10 %, respectively. Hence, pectin extraction with citric acid results in a high-quality polymer and could be used as a gelling agent, stabilizer, or texturizer in food products.

Biotransformation of 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene by a cocktail of native laccases from Pycnoporus sanguineus CS43 under oxygenic and non-oxygenic atmospheres

2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a highly toxic nitroaromatic explosive known for its environmental consequences, contaminating soil and groundwater throughout its life cycle, from production to disposal. Therefore, the urgency of developing innovative and ecological strategies to remedy the affected areas is recognized. This study reports, for the first time, the enzymatic biotransformation of TNT by a cocktail of native laccases from Pycnoporus sanguineus CS43. The laccases displayed efficient TNT conversion under both oxygenic and non-oxygenic conditions, achieving biotransformation rates of 80% and 87% within 48 h at a temperature of 60 °C and pH 7. Preliminary kinetic constants were calculated with the laccase cocktail, being a Vmax of 1.133 μM min-1 and 0.2984 μM min-1, and the Km values were 1586 μM and 458 μM, in an oxygenic and non-oxygenic atmosphere, respectively. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) confirmed the formation of amino dinitrotoluene isomers and hydroxylamine isomers as biotransformation products. In summary, this study suggests the potential application of laccases for the direct biotransformation of recalcitrant compounds like TNT, offering an environmentally friendly approach to address contamination issues.

Enzyme-linked carbon nanotubes as biocatalytic tools to degrade and mitigate environmental pollutants

A wide array of organic compounds have been recognized as pollutants of high concern due to their controlled or uncontrolled presence in environmental matrices. The persistent prevalence of diverse organic pollutants, including pharmaceutical compounds, phenolic compounds, synthetic dyes, and other hazardous substances, necessitates robust measures for their practical and sustainable removal from water bodies. Several bioremediation and biodegradation methods have been invented and deployed, with a wide range of materials well-suited for diverse environments. Enzyme-linked carbon-based materials have been considered efficient biocatalytic platforms for the remediation of complex organic pollutants, mostly showing over 80% removal efficiency of micropollutants. The advantages of enzyme-linked carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in enzyme immobilization and improved catalytic potential may thus be advantageous for environmental research considering the current need for pollutant removal. This review outlines the perspective of current remediation approaches and highlights the advantageous features of enzyme-linked CNTs in the removal of pollutants, emphasizing their reusability and stability aspects. Furthermore, different applications of enzyme-linked CNTs in environmental research with concluding remarks and future outlooks have been highlighted. Enzyme-linked CNTs serve as a robust biocatalytic platform for the sustainability agenda with the aim of keeping the environment clean and safe from a variety of organic pollutants.

Towards sustainable diatom biorefinery: Recent trends in cultivation and applications

Diatoms, with their complex cellular architecture, have been recognized as a source of limitless potential. These microbes are common in freshwater and marine habitats and are essential for primary production and carbon sequestration. They are excellent at utilizing nutrients, providing a sustainable method of treating wastewater while also producing biomass rich in beneficial substances like vitamins, carotenoids, polysaccharides, lipids, omega-3 fatty acids, pigments, and novel bioactive molecules. Additionally, they are highly efficient organisms that can be employed to monitor the environment by acting as trustworthy indicators of water quality. This comprehensive review explores the multifaceted applications of diatoms in a variety of fields, such as bioremediation, aquaculture, value-added products, and other applications. The review set out on a path towards greener, more sustainable methods amicable to both industry and the environment by utilizing theenormous diverse biotechnological potentials of diatoms.

Bio-mitigation of organic pollutants using horseradish peroxidase as a promising biocatalytic platform for environmental sustainability

A wide array of environmental pollutants is often generated and released into the ecosystem from industrial and human activities. Antibiotics, phenolic compounds, hydroquinone, industrial dyes, and Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are prevalent pollutants in water matrices. To promote environmental sustainability and minimize the impact of these pollutants, it is essential to eliminate such contaminants. Although there are multiple methods for pollutants removal, many of them are inefficient and environmentally unfriendly. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has been widely explored for its ability to oxidize the aforementioned pollutants, both alone and in combination with other peroxidases, and in an immobilized way. Numerous positive attributes make HRP an excellent biocatalyst in the biodegradation of diverse environmentally hazardous pollutants. In the present review, we underlined the major advancements in the HRP for environmental research. Numerous immobilization and combinational studies have been reviewed and summarized to comprehend the degradability, fate, and biotransformation of pollutants. In addition, a possible deployment of emerging computational methodologies for improved catalysis has been highlighted, along with future outlook and concluding remarks.

Sugeno fuzzy inference system modeling and DFT calculations for the treatment of pesticide-laden water by newly developed arginine functionalized magnetic Mn-based metal organic framework

The uncontrolled utilization of pesticides poses a significant risk to the environment and human health, making its management essential. In this regard, a new arginine functionalized magnetic Mn-based metal-organic framework (Arg@m-Mn-MOF) was fabricated and assessed for the removal of cypermethrin (CYP) and chlorpyrifos (CHL) from aqueous system. The Arg@m-Mn-MOF was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. Various parameters were optimized in a series of batch experiments and the following conditions were found optimal: pH: 4 and 5, contact time: 20 min, adsorbent dosage: 0.6 and 0.8 g L-1 with initial concentration: 10 mg L-1 and temperature: 298 K for CYP and CHL, respectively. The composite attained a maximum removal capacity of 44.84 and 71.42 mg g-1 for CYP and CHL, respectively. The elucidated data was strongly fitted to the pseudo-second-order model of kinetics (R2 > 0.98) and Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.98). Based upon 350 experimental datasets obtained from batch studies and interpolated data, the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was elucidated with R2 > 0.97 (CHL) and > 0.91 (CYP). The adsorption energy (- 11.67 kcal mol-1) calculated by Gaussian software suggests a good interaction between arginine and CHL through H-bonding. The present study's findings suggested the prepared Arg@m-Mn-MOF as a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of pesticides from agriculture runoff.

Pharmaceutical pollution fingerprinting and waterbodies remediation using waste-derived carbon dots as sustainable advanced nanomaterials

The conversion of biomass waste into high-value nanomaterials such as carbon dots might represent a great advancement towards a circular economy system. Biomass wastes are an excellent choice as carbon precursors because of their wide availability, abundance, chemical composition, and eco-friendly nature. Moreover, their use as a raw material might decrease the total cost of the synthesis processes and reduce the environmental impacts. In addition, the complex composition of biomass leads to carbon dots with abundant functional groups, which in turn enhances water dispersibility and photoluminescence properties. In this manner, the effective transformation of biomass wastes into carbon dots reduces environmental pollution through the inadequate management of waste while producing carbon dots with enhanced performances. Therefore, this review describes biomass wastes as potential candidates for the synthesis of carbon dots through different synthesis methods. In addition, we have analyzed the great potential of biomass-derived carbon dots (CDs) for the degradation and detection of emerging pharmaceutical pollutants by promoting a circular economy approach. Finally, we identified current challenges to propose possible research directions for the large-scale and sustainable synthesis of high-quality biomass-derived CDs.

New Perspective for Macroalgae-Based Animal Feeding in the Context of Challenging Sustainable Food Production

Food production is facing challenging times due to the pandemic, and climate change. With production expected to double by 2050, there is a need for a new paradigm in sustainable animal feed supply. Seaweeds offer a highly valuable opportunity in this regard. Seaweeds are classified into three categories: brown (Phaeophyceae), red (Rhodophyceae), and green (Chlorophyceae). While they have traditionally been used in aquafeed, their demand in the feed market is growing, parallelly increasing according to the food demand. Additionally, seaweeds are being promoted for their nutritional benefits, which contribute to the health, growth, and performance of animals intended for human consumption. Moreover, seaweeds contain biologically active compounds such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants (polyphenols), and pigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids), which possess beneficial properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects and act as prebiotics. This review offers a new perspective on the valorization of macroalgae biomass due to their nutritional profile and bioactive components, which have the potential to play a crucial role in animal growth and making possible new sources of healthy food ingredients.

Emergent Molecular Techniques Applied to the Detection of Porcine Viruses

Molecular diagnostic tests have evolved very rapidly in the field of human health, especially with the arrival of the recent pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, the animal sector is constantly neglected, even though accurate detection by molecular tools could represent economic advantages by preventing the spread of viruses. In this regard, the swine industry is of great interest. The main viruses that affect the swine industry are described in this review, including African swine fever virus (ASFV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and porcine circovirus (PCV), which have been effectively detected by different molecular tools in recent times. Here, we describe the rationale of molecular techniques such as multiplex PCR, isothermal methods (LAMP, NASBA, RPA, and PSR) and novel methods such as CRISPR-Cas and microfluidics platforms. Successful molecular diagnostic developments are presented by highlighting their most important findings. Finally, we describe the barriers that hinder the large-scale development of affordable, accessible, rapid, and easy-to-use molecular diagnostic tests. The evolution of diagnostic techniques is critical to prevent the spread of viruses and the development of viral reservoirs in the swine industry that impact the possible development of future pandemics and the world economy.

Nano and Technological Frontiers as a Sustainable Platform for Postharvest Preservation of Berry Fruits

Berries are highly perishable and susceptible to spoilage, resulting in significant food and economic losses. The use of chemicals in traditional postharvest protection techniques can harm both human health and the environment. Consequently, there is an increasing interest in creating environmentally friendly solutions for postharvest protection. This article discusses various approaches, including the use of "green" chemical compounds such as ozone and peracetic acid, biocontrol agents, physical treatments, and modern technologies such as the use of nanostructures and molecular tools. The potential of these alternatives is evaluated in terms of their effect on microbial growth, nutritional value, and physicochemical and sensorial properties of the berries. Moreover, the development of nanotechnology, molecular biology, and artificial intelligence offers a wide range of opportunities to develop formulations using nanostructures, improving the functionality of the coatings by enhancing their physicochemical and antimicrobial properties and providing protection to bioactive compounds. Some challenges remain for their implementation into the food industry such as scale-up and regulatory policies. However, the use of sustainable postharvest protection methods can help to reduce the negative impacts of chemical treatments and improve the availability of safe and quality berries.

Growth Behavior, Biomass Composition and Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAMEs) Production Potential of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Chlorella vulgaris Cultures

The production of biomolecules by microalgae has a wide range of applications in the development of various materials and products, such as biodiesel, food supplements, and cosmetics. Microalgae biomass can be produced using waste and in a smaller space than other types of crops (e.g., soja, corn), which shows microalgae's great potential as a source of biomass. Among the produced biomolecules of greatest interest are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and fatty acids. In this study, the production of these biomolecules was determined in two strains of microalgae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chlorella vulgaris) when exposed to different concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Results show a significant microalgal growth (3.69 g L-1) and carbohydrates (163 mg g-1) increase in C. reinhardtii under low nitrogen concentration. Also, higher lipids content was produced under low sulfur concentration (246 mg g-1). It was observed that sulfur variation could affect in a negative way proteins production in C. reinhardtii culture. In the case of C. vulgaris, a higher biomass production was obtained in the standard culture medium (1.37 g L-1), and under a low-phosphorus condition, C. vulgaris produced a higher lipids concentration (248 mg g-1). It was observed that a low concentration of nitrogen had a better effect on the accumulation of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) (C16-C18) in both microalgae. These results lead us to visualize the effects that the variation in macronutrients can have on the growth of microalgae and their possible utility for the production of microalgae-based subproducts.

Different stages of microbial community during the anaerobic digestion of food waste

Large-scale food waste (FW) disposal has resulted in severe environmental degradation and financial losses around the world. Although FW has a high biomass energy contents and a growing large number of national projects to recover energy from FW by anaerobic digestion (AD) are being developed. AD is a promising solution for FW management and energy generation when compared to typical disposal options including landfill disposal, incineration, and composting. AD of FW can be combined with an existing AD operation or linked to the manufacture of value-added products to reduce costs and increase income. AD is a metabolic process that requires four different types of microbes: hydrolyzers, acidogens, acetogens, and methanogens. Microbes use a variety of strategies to avoid difficult situations in the AD, such as competition for the same substrate between sulfate-reducing bacteria and methane-forming bacteria. An improved comprehension of the microbiology involved in the anaerobic digestion of FW will provide new insight into the circumstances needed to maximize this procedure, including its possibilities for use in co-digestion mechanisms. This paper reviewed the present scientific knowledge of microbial community during the AD and the connection between microbial diversity during the AD of FW.

Microencapsulation of Gallic Acid Based on a Polymeric and pH-Sensitive Matrix of Pectin/Alginate

The encapsulation of gallic acid (GA) through several methods has enhanced its shelf life and facilitated industrial applications. Polymeric matrices made of alginate and pectin were evaluated to encapsulate GA via spray drying. The pH-responsive release mechanism was monitored to validate the matrices' performances as wall materials and extend the bioactive compound stability. The microcapsules produced were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The retention and encapsulation efficiency ranges were 45-82% and 79-90%, respectively. The higher values were reached at 3 and 0.75% (w/v) pectin and sodium alginate, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy showed smooth spherical capsules and the average particle size ranged from 1327 to 1591 nm. Their performance and stability were evaluated with optimal results at a pH value of 7 throughout the investigation period. Therefore, this work demonstrated the suitability of gallic acid encapsulation via spray drying using pectin and alginate, which are biopolymers that can be obtained from circular economy processes starting from agro-industrial biomass. The developed formulations provide an alternative to protecting and controlling the release of GA, promoting its application in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries and allowing for the release of compounds with high bioactive potential.

Polysaccharides from the Sargassum and Brown Algae Genus: Extraction, Purification, and Their Potential Therapeutic Applications

Brown macroalgae represent one of the most proliferative groups of living organisms in aquatic environments. Due to their abundance, they often cause problems in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, resulting in health problems in humans and the death of various aquatic species. To resolve this, the application of Sargassum has been sought in different research areas, such as food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, since Sargassum is an easy target for study and simple to obtain. In addition, its high content of biocompounds, such as polysaccharides, phenols, and amino acids, among others, has attracted attention. One of the valuable components of brown macroalgae is their polysaccharides, which present interesting bioactivities, such as antiviral, antimicrobial, and antitumoral, among others. There is a wide variety of methods of extraction currently used to obtain these polysaccharides, such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), subcritical water extraction (SCWE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Therefore, this work covers the most current information on the methods of extraction, as well as the purification used to obtain a polysaccharide from Sargassum that is able to be utilized as alginates, fucoidans, and laminarins. In addition, a compilation of bioactivities involving brown algae polysaccharides in in vivo and in vitro studies is also presented, along with challenges in the research and marketing of Sargassum-based products that are commercially available.

Comparison of Alginate Mixtures as Wall Materials of Schizochytrium Oil Microcapsules Formed by Coaxial Electrospray

This work evaluated maltodextrin/alginate and β-glucan/alginate mixtures in the food industry as wall materials for the microencapsulation of Schizochytrium sp. oil, an important source of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Results showed that both mixtures display a shear-thinning behavior, although the viscosity is higher in β-glucan/alginate mixtures than in maltodextrin/alginate. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess the morphology of the microcapsules, which appeared more homogeneous for maltodextrin/alginate. In addition, oil-encapsulation efficiency was higher in maltodextrin/alginate mixtures (90%) than in β-glucan/alginate mixtures (80%). Finally, evaluating the microcapsules' stability by FTIR when exposed to high temperature (80 °C) showed that maltodextrin/alginate microcapsules were not degraded contrary to the β-glucan/alginate microcapsules. Thus, although high oil-encapsulation efficiency was obtained with both mixtures, the microcapsules' morphology and prolonged stability suggest that maltodextrin/alginate is a suitable wall material for microencapsulation of Schizochytrium sp. oil.

Hydrothermally improved natural manganese-containing catalytic materials to degrade 4-chlorophenol

Natural manganese-containing mineral (NMM) was used as a catalyst in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) degradation. The surface and structural properties of NMM were modified by the hydrothermal aging process and called H-NMM. The catalytic activity of NMM and H-NMM were evaluated for the catalytic ozonation process (COP). The synergistic effect of NMM and H-NMM in ozonation processes for 4-CP degradation under optimal conditions (pH of 7, 1 g/L of NMM and H-NMM, 0.85 mg/min of O₃, and 15 min of reaction time) was measured by 3.04 and 4.34, respectively. During the hydrothermal process, Mn⁴⁺ and Fe²⁺ were converted to Mn²⁺ and Fe³⁺, which caused better performance of the H-NMM than the NMM. During the catalytic ozonation process, Mn²⁺ is completely oxidized, which increases the production of Hydroxyl radical (•OH). The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in the system were identified using radical scavenging experiments. •OH, superoxide radical (•O₂^-), and singlet oxygen (¹O₂) represented the dominant reactive species for 4-CP degradation. The O₃/H-NMM process indicated a powerful ability in the mineralization of 4-CP (66.31% of TOC degradation). H-NMM exhibited excellent stability and reusability in consecutive catalytic cycles, and the NMM exhibited desirable performance. This study offers NMM and H-NMM as effective, stable, and competitive catalysts for hastening and enhancing the ozonation process to mitigate environmentally related pollutants of high concern.

Stress Response Analysis via Dynamic Entropy in EEG: Caregivers in View

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stress can be defined as any type of alteration that causes physical, emotional, or psychological tension. A very important concept that is sometimes confused with stress is anxiety. The difference between stress and anxiety is that stress usually has an existing cause. Once that activator has passed, stress typically eases. In this respect, according to the American Psychiatric Association, anxiety is a normal response to stress and can even be advantageous in some circumstances. By contrast, anxiety disorders differ from temporary feelings of anxiousness or nervousness with more intense feelings of fear or anxiety. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) explicitly describes anxiety as exorbitant concern and fearful expectations, occurring on most days for at least 6 months, about a series of events. Stress can be measured by some standardized questionnaires; however, these resources are characterized by some major disadvantages, the main one being the time consumed to interpret them; i.e., qualitative information must be transformed to quantitative data. Conversely, a physiological recourse has the advantage that it provides quantitative spatiotemporal information directly from brain areas and it processes data faster than qualitative supplies. A typical option for this is an electroencephalographic record (EEG). We propose, as a novelty, the application of time series (TS) entropies developed by us to inspect collections of EEGs obtained during stress situations. We investigated this database related to 23 persons, with 1920 samples (15 s) captured in 14 channels for 12 stressful events. Our parameters reflected that out of 12 events, event 2 (Family/financial instability/maltreatment) and 10 (Fear of disease and missing an important event) created more tension than the others. In addition, the most active lobes reflected by the EEG channels were frontal and temporal. The former is in charge of performing higher functions, self-control, self monitoring, and the latter is in charge of auditory processing, but also emotional handling. Thus, events E2 and E10 triggering frontal and temporal channels revealed the actual state of participants under stressful situations. The coefficient of variation revealed that E7 (Fear of getting cheated/losing someone) and E11 (Fear of suffering a serious illness) were the events with more changes among participants. In the same sense, AF4, FC5, and F7 (mainly frontal lobe channels) were the most irregular on average for all participants. In summary, by means of dynamic entropy analysis, the goal is to process the EEG dataset in order to elucidate which event and brain regions are key for all participants. The latter will allow us to easily determine which was the most stressful and on which brain zone. This study can be applied to other caregivers datasets. All this is a novelty.

Structural insights, biocatalytic characteristics, and application prospects of lignin-modifying enzymes for sustainable biotechnology-A review

Lignin modifying enzymes (LMEs) have gained widespread recognition in depolymerization of lignin polymers by oxidative cleavage. LMEs are a robust class of biocatalysts that include lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP), versatile peroxidase (VP), laccase (LAC), and dye-decolorizing peroxidase (DyP). Members of the LMEs family act on phenolic, non-phenolic substrates and have been widely researched for valorization of lignin, oxidative cleavage of xenobiotics and phenolics. LMEs implementation in the biotechnological and industrial sectors has sparked significant attention, although its potential future applications remain underexploited. To understand the mechanism of LMEs in sustainable pollution mitigation, several studies have been undertaken to assess the feasibility of LMEs in correlating to diverse pollutants for binding and intermolecular interactions at the molecular level. However, further investigation is required to fully comprehend the underlying mechanism. In this review we presented the key structural and functional features of LMEs, including the computational aspects, as well as the advanced applications in biotechnology and industrial research. Furthermore, concluding remarks and a look ahead, the use of LMEs coupled with computational frameworks, built upon artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), has been emphasized as a recent milestone in environmental research.

Identification of Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) MicroRNAs through Deep Sequencing and Their Impact on Plant Secondary Metabolism

The pharmacological properties of plants lie in the content of secondary metabolites that are classified into different categories based on their biosynthesis, structures, and functions. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that play crucial post-transcriptional regulatory roles in plants, including development and stress-response signaling; however, information about their involvement in secondary metabolism is still limited. Cumin is one of the most popular seeds from the plant Cuminum cyminum, with extensive applications in herbal medicine and cooking; nevertheless, no previous studies focus on the miRNA profile of cumin. In this study, the miRNA profile of C. cyminum and its association with the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites were determined using NGS technology. The sequencing data yielded 10,956,054 distinct reads with lengths ranging from 16 to 40 nt, of which 349 miRNAs were found to be conserved and 39 to be novel miRNAs. Moreover, this work identified 1959 potential target genes for C. cyminum miRNAs. It is interesting to note that several conserved and novel miRNAs have been found to specifically target important terpenoid backbone, flavonoid biosynthesis, and lipid/fatty acid pathways enzymes. We believe this investigation will aid in elucidating the implications of miRNAs in plant secondary metabolism.

Environmental concerns and bioaccumulation of psychiatric drugs in water bodies - Conventional versus biocatalytic systems of mitigation

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought increments in market sales and prescription of medicines commonly used to treat mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, stress, and related problems. The increasing use of these drugs, named psychiatric drugs, has led to their persistence in aquatic systems (bioaccumulation), since they are recalcitrant to conventional physical and chemical treatments typically used in wastewater treatment plants. An emerging environmental concern caused by the bioaccumulation of psychiatric drugs has been attributed to the potential ecological and toxicological risk that these medicines might have over human health, animals, and plants. Thus, by the application of biocatalysis-assisted techniques, it is possible to efficiently remove psychiatric drugs from water. Biocatalysis, is a widely employed and highly efficient process implemented in the biotransformation of a wide range of contaminants, since it has important differences in terms of catalytic behavior, compared to common treatment techniques, including photodegradation, Fenton, and thermal treatments, among others. Moreover, it is noticed the importance to monitor transformation products of degradation and biodegradation, since according to the applied removal technique, different toxic transformation products have been reported to appear after the application of physical and chemical procedures. In addition, this work deals with the discussion of differences existing between high- and low-income countries, according to their environmental regulations regarding waste management policies, especially waste of the drug industry.

Manganese peroxidases as robust biocatalytic tool - An overview of sources, immobilization, and biotechnological applications

With robust catalytic features, manganese peroxidases (MnPs) from various sources, including fungi and bacteria, have gained much consideration in many biotechnological applications with particular emphasis on environmental remediation. MnP is a heme-containing enzyme that belongs to the oxidoreductases that can catalyze the degradation of various organic pollutants, such as chlorophenols, nitroaromatic compounds, industrial dyes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. To spotlight the MnP as biocatalytic tool, an effort has been put forward to cover the four major compartments. For instance, following a brief introduction, first, various microbial sources of MnP are discussed with examples. Second, structural attributes and biocatalytic features of MnP are given with examples. Third, different MnP immobilization strategies, including adsorption, covalent linking, entrapment, and cross-linking, are discussed with a significant motive to strengthen the enzyme's stability against diverse deactivation agents by restricting the conformational mobility of molecules. Compared to free counterparts, immobilized MnP fractions perform well in hostile environments. Finally, various biotechnological applications, such as fuel ethanol production, de-lignification, textile industry, pulp and paper industry, degradation of phenolic and non-phenolic compounds, and pharmaceutical and pesticide degradation, are briefly discussed.

Magnetic metal-organic frameworks immobilized enzyme-based nano-biocatalytic systems for sustainable biotechnology

Nanobiocatalysts, in which enzyme molecules are integrated into/onto multifunctional materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have been fascinating and appeared as a new interface of nanobiocatalysis with multi-oriented applications. Among various nano-support matrices, functionalized MOFs with magnetic attributes have gained supreme interest as versatile nano-biocatalytic systems for organic bio-transformations. From the design (fabrication) to deployment (application), magnetic MOFs have manifested notable efficacy in manipulating the enzyme microenvironment for robust biocatalysis and thus assure requisite applications in several areas of enzyme engineering at large and nano-biocatalytic transformations, in particular. Magnetic MOFs-linked enzyme-based nano-biocatalytic systems offer chemo-regio- and stereo-selectivities, specificities, and resistivities under fine-tuned enzyme microenvironments. Considering the current sustainable bioprocesses demands and green chemistry needs, we reviewed synthesis chemistry and application prospects of magnetic MOFs-immobilized enzyme-based nano-biocatalytic systems for exploitability in different industrial and biotechnological sectors. More specifically, following a thorough introductory background, the first half of the review discusses various approaches to effectively developed magnetic MOFs. The second half mainly focuses on MOFs-assisted biocatalytic transformation applications, including biodegradation of phenolic compounds, removal of endocrine disrupting compounds, dye decolorization, green biosynthesis of sweeteners, biodiesel production, detection of herbicides and screening of ligands and inhibitors.

Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering-Based Therapeutic Interventions: Promising Strategies to Improve Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

Unlike the central nervous system, the peripheral one has the ability to regenerate itself after injury; however, this natural regeneration process is not always successful. In fact, even with some treatments, the prognosis is poor, and patients consequently suffer with the functional loss caused by injured nerves, generating several impacts on their quality of life. In the present review we aimed to address two strategies that may considerably potentiate peripheral nerve regeneration: stem cells and tissue engineering. In vitro studies have shown that pluripotent cells associated with neural scaffolds elaborated by tissue engineering can increase functional recovery, revascularization, remyelination, neurotrophin expression and reduce muscle atrophy. Although these results are very promising, it is important to note that there are some barriers to be circumvented: the host's immune response, the oncogenic properties attributed to stem cells and the duration of the pro-regenerative effects. After all, more studies are still needed to overcome the limitations of these treatments; those that address techniques for manipulating the lesion microenvironment combining different therapies seem to be the most promising and proactive ones.

Nanostructured supports for multienzyme co-immobilization for biotechnological applications: Achievements, challenges and prospects

The synergistic combination of current biotechnological and nanotechnological research has turned to multienzyme co-immobilization as a promising concept to design biocatalysis engineering. It has also intensified the development and deployment of multipurpose biocatalysts, for instance, multienzyme co-immobilized constructs, via biocatalysis/protein engineering to scale-up and fulfil the ever-increasing industrial demands. Considering the characteristic features of both the loaded multienzymes and nanostructure carriers, i.e., selectivity, specificity, stability, resistivity, induce activity, reaction efficacy, multi-usability, high catalytic turnover, optimal yield, ease in recovery, and cost-effectiveness, multienzyme-based green biocatalysts have become a powerful norm in biocatalysis/protein engineering sectors. In this context, the current state-of-the-art in enzyme engineering with a synergistic combination of nanotechnology, at large, and nanomaterials, in particular, are significantly contributing and providing robust tools to engineer and/or tailor enzymes to fulfil the growing catalytic and contemporary industrial needs. Considering the above critics and unique structural, physicochemical, and functional attributes, herein, we spotlight important aspects spanning across prospective nano-carriers for multienzyme co-immobilization. Further, this work comprehensively discuss the current advances in deploying multienzyme-based cascade reactions in numerous sectors, including environmental remediation and protection, drug delivery systems (DDS), biofuel cells development and energy production, bio-electroanalytical devices (biosensors), therapeutical, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical oriented applications. In conclusion, the continuous developments in nano-assembling the multienzyme loaded co-immobilized nanostructure carriers would be a unique way that could act as a core of modern biotechnological research.

Enzyme-Linked Metal Organic Frameworks for Biocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are multi-dimensional network of crystalline material held together by bonding of metal atoms and organic ligands. Owing to unique structural, chemical, and physical properties, MOFs has been used for enzyme immobilization to be employed in different catalytic process, including catalytic degradation of antibiotics. Immobilization process other than providing large surface provides enzyme with enhanced stability, catalytic activity, reusability, and selectivity. There are various approaches of enzyme immobilization over MOFs including physical adsorption, chemical bonding, diffusion and in situ encapsulation. In situ encapsulation is one the best approach that provides extra stability from unfolding and denaturation in harsh industrial conditions. Presence of antibiotic in environment is highly damaging for human in particular and ecosystem in general. Different methods such as ozonation, oxidation, chlorination and catalysis are available for degradation or removal of antibiotics from environment, however these are associated with several issues. Contrary to these, enzyme immobilized MOFs are novel system to be used in catalytic degradation of antibiotics. Enzyme@MOFs are more stable, reusable and more efficient owing to additional support of MOFs to natural enzymes in well-established process of photocatalysis for degradation of antibiotics aimed at environmental remediation. Prime focus of this review is to present catalytic degradation of antibiotics by enzyme@MOFs while outlining their synthetics approaches, characterization, and mechanism of degradation. Furthermore, this review highlights the significance of enzyme@MOFs system for antibiotics degradation in particular and environmental remediation in general. Current challenges and future perspective of research in this field are also outlined along with concluding comments.

Assessing chemical hazard and unraveling binding affinity of priority pollutants to lignin modifying enzymes for environmental remediation

Lignin-modifying enzymes (LMEs) are impactful biocatalysts in environmental remediation applications. However, LMEs-assisted experimental degradation neglects the molecular basis of pollutant degradation. Furthermore, throughout the remediation process, the inherent hazards of environmental pollutants remain untapped for in-depth toxicological endpoints. In this investigation, a predictive toxicological framework and a computational framework adopting LMEs were employed to assess the hazards of Priority Pollutants (PP) and its possible LMEs-assisted catalytic screening. The potential hazardous outcomes of PP were assessed using Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSARs)-based techniques including Toxtree, ECOSAR, and T.E.S.T. tools. Toxicological findings revealed positive outcomes in a multitude of endpoints for all PP. The PP compound 2,3,7,8-TCDD (dioxin) was found to exhibit the lowest concentration of aquatic toxicity implementing aquatic model systems; LC₅₀ as 0.01, 0.01, 0.04 (mg L^-1) for Fish (96 H), Daphnid (48 H), Green algae (96 H) respectively. T.E.S.T. results revealed that chloroform, and 2-chlorophenol both seem to be developmental toxicants. Subsequently, LMEs-assisted docking procedure was employed in predictive mitigation of PP. The docking approach as predicted degradation revealed the far lowest docking energy score for Versatile peroxidase (VP)- 2,3,7,8-TCDD docked complex with a binding energy of -9.2 (kcal mol^-1), involved PHE-46, PRO-139, PRO-141, ILE-148, LEU-165, HIS-169, LEU-228, MET-262, and MET-265 as key interacting amino acid residues. Second most ranked but lesser than VP, Lignin peroxidase (LiP)- 2,3,7,8-TCDD docked complex exhibited a rather lower binding affinity score (-8.8 kcal mol^-1). Predictive degradation screening employing comparative docking revealed varying binding affinities, portraying that each LMEs member has independent feasibility to bind PP as substrate. Predictive findings endorsed the hazardous nature of associated PP in a multitude of endpoints, which could be attenuated by undertaking LMEs as a predictive approach to protect the environment and implement it in regulatory considerations.

Microalgae-Based Biotechnology as Alternative Biofertilizers for Soil Enhancement and Carbon Footprint Reduction: Advantages and Implications

Due to the constant growth of the human population and anthropological activity, it has become necessary to use sustainable and affordable technologies that satisfy the current and future demand for agricultural products. Since the nutrients available to plants in the soil are limited and the need to increase the yields of the crops is desirable, the use of chemical (inorganic or NPK) fertilizers has been widespread over the last decades, causing a nutrient shortage due to their misuse and exploitation, and because of the uncontrolled use of these products, there has been a latent environmental and health problem globally. For this reason, green biotechnology based on the use of microalgae biomass is proposed as a sustainable alternative for development and use as soil improvers for crop cultivation and phytoremediation. This review explores the long-term risks of using chemical fertilizers for both human health (cancer and hypoxia) and the environment (eutrophication and erosion), as well as the potential of microalgae biomass to substitute current fertilizer using different treatments on the biomass and their application methods for the implementation on the soil; additionally, the biomass can be a source of carbon mitigation and wastewater treatment in agro-industrial processes.

Functionalized graphene oxide-zinc oxide hybrid material and its deployment for adsorptive removal of levofloxacin from aqueous media

This work reports on the synthesis of aspartic acid-functionalized graphene oxide-zinc oxide, as a functional porous material, and its potential to mitigate levofloxacin (LFXN). The adsorbent was characterized by various techniques, including ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average crystallite size of the prepared composite was about 17.30 nm. Batch adsorption studies were carried out to elucidate the adsorption process for LFXN. Different parameters, including contact time, LFXN initial concentration, adsorbent concentration, pH, temperature, and ionic strength were studied. The mechanism and kinetics were studied by fitting the data to Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. The isotherm data was better fitted to Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.999) as compared to the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained at equilibrium was 73.15 mg/g. For kinetic studies, Pseudo first order was better fitted with R² = 0.87797, confirming the physisorption process. Thermodynamics parameters revealed that the process was exothermic and spontaneous at low temperatures. The adsorption mechanism was studied and the impregnation of LFXN in the adsorbent was confirmed by FTIR studies. This research proved that the designed GO/Asp-ZnO was a novel and promising adsorbent for the removal of LFXN with an efficiency of 95.12% at 30 mg/L LFXN by 0.6 g/L adsorbent in 24 h at pH = 7 and T = 25 °C.

Sustainable production of biofuels and bioderivatives from aquaculture and marine waste

The annual global fish production reached a record 178 million tonnes in 2020, which continues to increase. Today, 49% of the total fish is harvested from aquaculture, which is forecasted to reach 60% of the total fish produced by 2030. Considering that the wastes of fishing industries represent up to 75% of the whole organisms, the fish industry is generating a large amount of waste which is being neglected in most parts of the world. This negligence can be traced to the ridicule of the value of this resource as well as the many difficulties related to its valorisation. In addition, the massive expansion of the aquaculture industry is generating significant environmental consequences, including chemical and biological pollution, disease outbreaks that increase the fish mortality rate, unsustainable feeds, competition for coastal space, and an increase in the macroalgal blooms due to anthropogenic stressors, leading to a negative socio-economic and environmental impact. The establishment of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) has received increasing attention due to the environmental benefits of using waste products and transforming them into valuable products. There is a need to integrate and implement new technologies able to valorise the waste generated from the fish and aquaculture industry making the aquaculture sector and the fish industry more sustainable through the development of a circular economy scheme. This review wants to provide an overview of several approaches to valorise marine waste (e.g., dead fish, algae waste from marine and aquaculture, fish waste), by their transformation into biofuels (biomethane, biohydrogen, biodiesel, green diesel, bioethanol, or biomethanol) and recovering biomolecules such as proteins (collagen, fish hydrolysate protein), polysaccharides (chitosan, chitin, carrageenan, ulvan, alginate, fucoidan, and laminarin) and biosurfactants.

Microbial fuel cell: A green eco-friendly agent for tannery wastewater treatment and simultaneous bioelectricity/power generation

This review paper emphasised on the origin of hexavalent chromium toxicity in tannery wastewater and its remediation using novel Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology, including electroactive bacteria, which are known as exoelectrogens, to simultaneously treat wastewater and its action in the production of bioenergy and the mechanism of Cr⁶⁺ reduction. Also, there are various parameters like electrode, pH, mode of operation, time of operation, and type of exchange membrane used for promising results shown in enhancing MFC production and remediation of Cr⁶⁺. Destructive anthropological activities, such as leather making and electroplating industries are key sources of hexavalent chromium contamination in aquatic repositories. When Cr⁶⁺ enters the food chain and enters the human body, it has the potential to cause cancer. MFC is a green innovation that generates energy economically through the reduction of toxic Cr⁶⁺ to less toxic Cr³⁺. The organic substrates utilized at the anode of MFC act as electrons (e^-) donors. This review also highlighted the utilization of cheap substrates to make MFCs more economically suitable and the energy production at minimum cost.

Genetically engineered microorganisms for environmental remediation

In the recent era, the increasing persistence of hazardous contaminants is badly affecting the globe in many ways. Due to high environmental contamination, almost every second species on earth facing the worst issue in their survival. Advances in newer remediation approaches may help enhance bioremediation's quality, while conventional procedures have failed to remove hazardous compounds from the environment. Chemical and physical waste cleanup approaches have been used in current circumstances; however, these methods are costly and harmful to the environment. Thus, there has been a rise in the use of bioremediation due to an increase in environmental contamination, which led to the development of genetically engineered microbes (GEMs). It is safer and more cost-effective to use engineered microorganisms rather than alternative methods. GEMs are created by introducing a stronger protein into bacteria through biotechnology or genetic engineering to enhance the desired trait. Biodegradation of oil spills, halobenzoates naphthalenes, toluenes, trichloroethylene, octanes, xylenes etc. has been accomplished using GEMs such bacteria, fungus, and algae. Biotechnologically induced microorganisms are more powerful than naturally occurring ones and may degrade contaminants faster because they can quickly adapt to new pollutants they encounter or co-metabolize. Genetic engineering is a worthy process that will benefit the environment and ultimately the health of our people.

Metal-doped carbon dots as robust nanomaterials for the monitoring and degradation of water pollutants

The contamination of the environment by domestic and industrial discharges is a relevant and persistent problem that needs novel solutions. Innovations in the detection, adsorption, and removal or in-situ degradation of toxic components are urgently required. Various effective techniques and materials have been proposed to address this problem, in which carbon dots (CDs) stand out because of their unique properties and low-cost and abundant nature. Their combination with different metals results in the enhancement of their innate properties. Metal-doped CDs have shown excellent results and competitive advantages in recent times. Considering the above useful critiques and CDs notable potentialities, this review discusses different approaches in detail to sense, adsorb, and photodegrade different pollutants in water samples. It was found that altering the electronic structure of CDs via metal doping has a great potential to enhance the optical, electrical, chemical, and magnetic capabilities of CDs, which in turn is beneficial for wastewater treatment.

Integrated Biorefinery and Life Cycle Assessment of Cassava Processing Residue-From Production to Sustainable Evaluation

Commonly known as a subsistence culture, cassava came to be considered a commodity and key to adding value. However, this tuber's processing for starch and flour production is responsible for generating a large amount of waste that causes serious environmental problems. This biomass of varied biochemical composition has excellent potential for producing fuels (biogas, bioethanol, butanol, biohydrogen) and non-energetic products (succinic acid, glucose syrup, lactic acid) via biorefinery. However, there are environmental challenges, leading to uncertainties related to the sustainability of biorefineries. Thus, the provision of information generated in life cycle assessment (LCA) can help reduce bottlenecks found in the productive stages, making production more competitive. Within that, this review concentrates information on the production of value-added products, the environmental impact generated, and the sustainability of biorefineries.

Degradation of 4-chlorophenol using MnOOH and γ-MnOOH nanomaterials as porous catalyst: Performance, synergistic mechanism, and effect of co-existing anions

Transition metal catalysts have been proven to be a highly-potent catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The present work aimed to synthesizes the γ-MnOOH and MnOOH based on the one-pot hydrothermal method as PMS activators for efficient degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The effect of operational parameters including solution pH, γ-MnOOH and MnOOH dose, PMS dose, 4-CP concentration, and also mixture media composition was elaborated. The results showed that the combination of MnOOH and γ-MnOOH with PMS noticeably creates a synergistic effect (SF) in 4-CP degradation by both PMS/MnOOH and PMS/γ-MnOOH process, with a SF value of 48.14 and 97.42, respectively. In both systems, the removal of 4-CP decreased in severely alkaline and acidic conditions, while no significant changes were observed in pH 5 to 9. Also, coexisting PO₄³- significantly reduced the removal efficiency of both systems. In addition, the effect of humic acid (HA) as a classical scavenger was investigated and showed that presence of 4 mg/L HA reduced the removal efficiency of 4-CP in the PMS/MnOOH process from 97.44% to 79.3%. The three consecutive use of both catalysts turned out that MnOOH has better stability than γ-MnOOH with lower Mn ions leaching. More importantly, quenching experiment showed that both non-radical (¹O₂ and O₂^-) and radical (SO₄^- and OH) pathways are involved in 4-CP degradation and non-radical pathway was the dominant one in both systems.

Polyethylene glycol capped copper ferrite porous nanostructured materials for efficient photocatalytic degradation of bromophenol blue

Three different types (blank, annealed, and functionalized) of copper ferrite nanoparticles (CuFe₂O₄) were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The CuFe₂O₄ NPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. FTIR analysis confirmed that 3-APTES is successfully grafted on the surface of CuFe₂O₄ NPs. XRD results show the amorphous nature of blank CuFe₂O₄ NPs, and crystalline structure was observed for annealed and functionalized CuFe₂O₄ NPs. XRD results revealed that crystallite size ranges from 23.6 to 34.6 nm. SEM micrographs of blank CuFe₂O₄ NPs show the irregular shape and size of the nanostructure. The spherical and strongly linked structure was seen in the micrograph of functionalized CuFe₂O₄ NPs. EDX analysis revealed the nanostructure composed of Fe, Cu, O, and a small percentage of Si. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of synthesized CuFe₂O₄ NPs was examined under UV irradiation in an aqueous medium against bromophenol blue (BPB) dye. The effect of different parameters such as irradiation time and pH on the photodegradation of BPB dye was studied by all three types of CuFe₂O₄ photocatalyst. Results show that the maximum photocatalytic degradation efficiency was observed for functionalized CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles that degraded 98% of BPB dye in the acidic medium at pH = 1. The optimum contact time for dye degradation was 120 min by synthesized photocatalyst. Photodegradation performance of blank and annealed CuFe₂O₄ NPs is less than 90%. The synthesized CuFe₂O₄ NPs were recycled and reused, which shows good photocatalytic degradation efficiency up to 4 consecutive cycles. The kinetic model displayed that degradation reaction followed pseudo 1^st order kinetics. The blank, annealed, and functionalized CuFe₂O₄ NPs have turnover numbers of 10.7x10 (Mudhoo et al., 2019), 12.9x10 (Mudhoo et al., 2019), and 22.2x10 (Mudhoo et al., 2019) (kg^-1 sec^-1) accordingly. In conclusion, all results revealed the high efficiency of prepared photocatalyst for tested hazardous dye from wastewater and encouraged more work on photodegradation of organic pollutants from wastewater.

Detection of Emerging Pollutants Using Aptamer-Based Biosensors: Recent Advances, Challenges, and Outlook

The synergistic potentialities of innovative materials that include aptamers have opened new paradigms in biosensing platforms for high-throughput monitoring systems. The available nucleobase functional moieties in aptamers offer exclusive features for bioanalytical sensing applications. In this context, compared to various in-practice biological recognition elements, the utilization of aptamers in detection platforms results in an extensive range of advantages in terms of design flexibility, stability, and sensitivity, among other attributes. Thus, the utilization of aptamers-based biosensing platforms is extensively anticipated to meet unaddressed challenges of various in-practice and standard analytical and sensing techniques. Furthermore, the superior characteristics of aptasensors have led to their applicability in the detection of harmful pollutants present in ever-increasing concentrations in different environmental matrices and water bodies, seeking to achieve simple and real-time monitoring. Considering the above-mentioned critiques and notable functional attributes of aptamers, herein, we reviewed aptamers as a fascinating interface to design, develop, and deploy a new generation of monitoring systems to aid modern bioanalytical sensing applications. Moreover, this review aims to summarize the most recent advances in the development and application of aptasensors for the detection of various emerging pollutants (EPs), e.g., pharmaceutical, and personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pesticides and other agricultural-related compounds, and toxic heavy elements. In addition, the limitations and current challenges are also reviewed, considering the technical constraints and complexity of the environmental samples.

Biodegradation of environmental pollutants using catalase-based biocatalytic systems

The synergistic combination of biocatalysts and nanomaterials provides a new interface of a robust biocatalytic system that can effectively remediate environmental pollutants. Enzymes, such as catalase-based constructs, impart the desired candidature for catalytic transformation processes and are potential alternatives to replace conventional remediation strategies that have become laborious and somewhat inefficient. Furthermore, the controlled or uncontrolled discharge of various emerging pollutants (EPs) into water bodies is equally proportional to the fast-growing population and extensive urbanization. EPs affect the entire living being and continuously deteriorate the environmental system, directly or indirectly. The occurrence of EPs (even released after partial treatments, but still in bioactive forms) disturbs ecological integrity. Due to the ineffectiveness of in-practice traditional remediation processes, new and robust treatment measures as effective and sustainable remediation have become a meaningful goal. In this context, special attention has been shifted to engineering an enzyme (catalase)-based biodegradation system with immense prospects in environmental cleanup. The unique synergistic combination of nanomaterials (having multifunctional attributes) with enzymes of interest makes them a state-of-the-art interface that can further ameliorate bio-catalysis and biodegradation performance. This review covers current research and scientific advancement in developing and deploying catalase-based biocatalytic systems to mitigate several EPs from the environment matrices. The biocatalytic features of catalase, along with the mechanistic insight into H₂O₂ neutralization, several nano-based materials loaded with catalase, including nanoparticles (NPs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), polymeric-based composites, oxime-functionalized cryo-gel disks, electro-spun nanofibrous membranes, and other hybrid materials have also been discussed with suitable examples.

Recent advances in metal-based nanoporous materials for sensing environmentally-related biomolecules

Highly sensitive, stable, selective, efficient, and short reaction time sensors play a substantial role in daily life/industry and are the need of the day. Due to the rising environmental issues, nanoporous carbon and metal-based materials have attracted significant attention in environmental analysis owing to their intriguing and multifunctional properties and cost-effective and rapid detection of different analytes by sensing applications. Environmental-related issues such as pollution have been a significant threat to the world. Therefore, it is necessary to fabricate highly promising performance-based sensor materials with excellent reliability, selectivity and good sensitivity for monitoring various analytes. In this regard, different methods have been employed to fabricate these sensors comprising metal, metal oxides, metal oxide carbon composites and MOFs leading to the formation of nanoporous metal and carbon composites. These composites have exceptional properties such as large surface area, distinctive porosity, and high conductivity, making them promising candidates for several versatile sensing applications. This review covers recent advances and significant studies in the sensing field of various nanoporous metal and carbon composites. Key challenges and future opportunities in this exciting field are also part of this review.

In-house fabrication of macro-porous biopolymeric hydrogel and its deployment for adsorptive remediation of lead and cadmium from water matrices

A novel adsorbent was prepared by blending chitosan (CS) and acrylic acid (AA) while using formaldehyde as a cross linker in the form of hydrogel beads. The adsorption properties of these hydrogel beads for the removal of toxic metal ions (Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺) from aqueous solutions were evaluated. The hydrogel beads have a 3D macro-porous structure whose -NH₂ groups were considered to be the dominant binding specie for Cd and Pb ions. The equilibrium adsorption capacity (q_e) of beads was significantly affected by the mass ratio of sorbent and sorbate. The percentage removal of Cd and Pb ions was observed to be enhanced with the increase in sorbate concentration. The hydrogel beads maintained good adsorption properties at adsorption-desorption equilibrium. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to elaborate the isotherms as well as isotherm constants. Adsorption isothermal data is well explained by the Freundlich model. The data of experimental kinetics is interrelated with the second-order kinetic model, which showed that the chemical sorption phenomenon is the rate limiting step. The results of intraparticle diffusion model described the adsorption process occurred on a porous substance that proved chitosan/Formaldehyde beads to be the favorable adsorbent.

Bio-removal of emerging pollutants by advanced bioremediation techniques

This review highlights the relevance of bioremediation techniques for the removal of emerging pollutants (EPs). The EPs are chemical or biological pollutants that are not currently monitored or regulated by environmental authorities, but which can enter the environment and cause harmful effects to the environment and human health. In recent times, an ample range of EPs have been found in water bodies, where they can unbalance ecosystems and cause negative effects on non-target species. In addition, some EPs have shown high rates of bioaccumulation in aquatic species, thus affecting the safety and quality of seafood. The negative impacts of emerging pollutants, their wide distribution in the environment, their bioaccumulation rates, and their resistance to wastewater treatment plants processes have led to research on sustainable remediation. Remediation techniques have been recently directed to advanced biological remediation technologies. Such technologies have exhibited numerous advantages like in-situ remediation, low costs, eco-friendliness, high public acceptance, and so on. Thus, the present review has compiled the most recent studies on bioremediation techniques for water decontamination from emerging pollutants to extend the current knowledge on sustainable remediation technologies. Biological emerging contaminants, agrochemicals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and pharmaceutical and personal care products were considered for this review study, and their removal by bioremediation techniques involving plants, bacteria, microalgae, and fungi. Finally, further research opportunities are presented based on current challenges from an economic, biological, and operation perspective.

Prospects of microbial polysaccharides-based hybrid constructs for biomimicking applications

Polysaccharides are biobased polymers obtained from renewable sources. They exhibit various interesting features including biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity. Microbial polysaccharides are produced by several microorganisms including yeast, fungi, algae, and bacteria. Microbial polysaccharides have gained high importance in biotechnology due to their novel physiochemical characteristics and composition. Among microbial polysaccharides, xanthan, alginate, gellan, and dextran are the most commonly reported polysaccharides for the development of biomimetic materials for biomedical applications including targeted drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue engineering. Several chemical and physical cross-linking reactions are performed to increase their technological and functional properties. Owning to the broad-scale applications of microbial polysaccharides, this review aims to summarize the characteristics with different ways of physical/chemical crosslinking for polysaccharide regulation. Recently, several biopolymers have gained high importance due to their biologically active properties. This will help in the formation of bioactive nutraceuticals and functional foods. This review provides a perspective on microbial polysaccharides, with special emphasis given to applications in promising biosectors and the subsequent advancement on the discovery and development of new polysaccharides for adding new products.

Effect of non-ionic surfactant in the solvothermal synthesis of anatase TiO2 nanoplates with a high percentage of exposed {001} facets and its role in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye

The synthesis of anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles with controlled morphology and increased {001} facets exposed without the presence of fluorine-derived substances is a challenge. Herein, we report a highly effective approach to fabricate anatase TiO₂ nanoplates with exposed {001} facets and their exploitation as robust photocatalytic materials for dye remediation. These materials were synthesized under controlled hydrolysis and condensation reactions, using titanium (IV) n-butoxide in an ethanolic solution, with acetic and sulfuric acids, by a solvothermal method at 190 °C with or without the presence of the non-ionic surfactant Triton® X-100 and then characterized. During TiO₂ crystal synthesis, the effect of a non-ionic surfactant on the TiO₂ particle growth was investigated. Our results demonstrate that the proposed method can synthesize pure and crystalline anatase TiO₂ square nanoplates that form nanostructured spheres with high surface area, uniformly sized mesopores, and exposed {001} facets. The presence of non-ionic surfactant increased the exposed {001} facets percentage of the formed nanoplates from 69 to 80%, decreased the crystallite thickness, but unaffected its crystalline phase and band gap energy. The kinetic constants (K_a e K_b) for the synthesized TiO₂ anatase nanoplates are considerably higher than the commercial TiO₂ anatase constant (K_c). The synthesized photocatalysts show higher efficiency in the photocatalytic removal of methylene blue (MB) than commercial TiO₂ (for t = 120 min).

Nanohybrid catalysts with porous structures for environmental remediation through photocatalytic degradation of emerging pollutants

Water supplies have been seriously challenged by new emerging pollutants, which are difficult to remove by traditional wastewater treatment. Thus, new technologies such as catalytic advanced oxidation processes have merged as suitable solutions; however, the drawbacks of typical catalysts limit their application. To overcome this issue, new materials with enhanced textural properties have been developed, showing that their porosity and chemical nature influence their potential as a catalyst. Herein, the recent progress in highly porous catalysts and their suitable deployment to effectively nano-remediate the polluted environmental matrices are reviewed in detail. First, following a brief introduction, several environmental pollutants of emerging concerns from different sectors, including pharmaceutical residues, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pesticides, and hazardous dyes are also introduced with relevant examples. To effectively tackle the sustainable remediation of emerging pollutants, this work also focuses on the multifunctional features of nanohybrid porous materials that act as catalysts constructs to degrade emerging pollutants. The influence of surface reactive centers, stability, bandgap energies, light absorption capacities, and pollutants adsorption capacities are also discussed. Successful examples of the employment of nanohybrid porous catalysts for the degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants, EDCs, pesticides, and hazardous dyes are summarized. Finally, some challenges faced by nanohybrid porous materials to achieve their potential application as advanced catalysts for environmental remediation have been identified and presented herein.

Towards an Eco-Friendly Coffee Rust Control: Compilation of Natural Alternatives from a Nutritional and Antifungal Perspective

Hemileia vastatrix (HV) is the pathogen responsible for the coffee leaf rust (CLR) disease that has spread globally. CLR causes losses of up to a billion dollars annually and affects all types of crops regardless of their production regime (organic or inorganic). Additionally, smallholders produce approximately 80% of coffee in developing countries. The condition causes losses of up to a billion dollars annually. Until the 90s, shaded-production systems and native varieties were encouraged; however, the rapid spread of CLR has forced farmers to migrate towards inorganic schemes, mainly due to a lack of knowledge about natural alternatives to pesticides that can be implemented to control HV. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to compile the currently existing options, emphasizing two key factors that guarantee efficient rust control: selective fungicidal activity against HV and the nutrition of coffee crops. Thus, by comprehending how these natural compounds (such as plant, bacteria, fungi, animals, or algae metabolites) impact coffee rust proliferation. Furthermore, since a various range of biochar effects contributes to the control of foliar fungal pathogens through modification of root exudates, soil properties, and nutrient availability, which influence the growth of antagonist microorganisms, we present a review of the pathogen-suppressive effects of biochar, and new control strategies suitable for organic schemes can be developed.

Esterases as emerging biocatalysts: Mechanistic insights, genomic and metagenomic, immobilization, and biotechnological applications

Esterase enzymes are a family of hydrolases that catalyze the breakdown and formation of ester bonds. Esterases have gained a prominent position in today's world's industrial enzymes market. Due to their unique biocatalytic attributes, esterases contribute to environmentally sustainable design approaches, including biomass degradation, food and feed industry, dairy, clothing, agrochemical (herbicides, insecticides), bioremediation, biosensor development, anticancer, antitumor, gene therapy, and diagnostic purposes. Esterases can be isolated by a diverse range of mammalian tissues, animals, and microorganisms. The isolation of extremophilic esterases increases the interest of researchers in the extraction and utilization of these enzymes at the industrial level. Genomic, metagenomic, and immobilization techniques have opened innovative ways to extract esterases and utilize them for a longer time to take advantage of their beneficial activities. The current study discusses the types of esterases, metagenomic studies for exploring new esterases, and their biomedical applications in different industrial sectors.

Neurotoxic effects of environmental contaminants-measurements, mechanistic insight, and environmental relevance

Pollution is a significant and growing concern for any population regardless of age because these environmental contaminants exhibit different neurodegenerative effects on persons of different ages. These environmental contaminants are the products of human welfare projects like industry, automobile exhaust, clinical and research laboratory extrudes, and agricultural chemicals. These contaminants are found in various forms in environmental matrices like nanoparticles, particulate matter, lipophilic vaporized toxicants, and ultrafine particulate matter. Because of their small size, they can easily cross blood-brain barriers or use different cellular mechanisms for assistance. Other than this, these contaminants cause an innate immune response in different cells of the central nervous system and cause neurotoxicity. Considering the above critiques and current needs, this review summarizes different protective strategies based on bioactive compounds present in plants. Various bioactive compounds from medicinal plants with neuroprotective capacities are discussed with relevant examples. Many in vitro studies on clinical trials have shown promising outcomes using plant-based bioactive compounds against neurological disorders.

Prospecting cellulose fibre-reinforced composite membranes for sustainable remediation and mitigation of emerging contaminants

Many environmental pollutants caused by uncontrolled urbanization and rapid industrial growth have provoked serious concerns worldwide. These pollutants, including toxic metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, and petroleum hydrocarbons, unenviably compromise the water quality and manifest a severe menace to aquatic entities and human beings. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to acquaint bio-nanocomposites with the capability to remove and decontaminate this extensive range of emerging pollutants. Recently, considerable emphasis has been devoted to developing low-cost novel materials obtained from natural resources accompanied by minimal toxicity to the environment. One such component is cellulose, naturally the most abundant organic polymer found in nature. Given bio-renewable sources, natural abundance, and impressive nanofibril arrangement, cellulose-reinforced composites are widely engineered and utilized for multiple applications, such as wastewater decontamination, energy storage devices, drug delivery systems, paper and pulp industries, construction industries, and adhesives, etc. Environmental remediation prospective is among the fascinating application of these cellulose-reinforced composites. This review discusses the structural attributes of cellulose, types of cellulose fibrils-based nano-biocomposites, preparatory techniques, and the potential of cellulose-based composites to remediate a diverse array of organic and inorganic pollutants in wastewater.

SARS-COV-2/COVID-19: scenario, epidemiology, adaptive mutations, and environmental factors

The coronavirus pandemic of 2019 has already exerted an enormous impact. For over a year, the worldwide pandemic has ravaged the whole globe, with approximately 250 million verified human infection cases and a mortality rate surpassing 4 million. While the genetic makeup of the related pathogen (SARS-CoV-2) was identified, many unknown facets remain a mystery, comprising the virus's origin and evolutionary trend. There were many rumors that SARS-CoV-2 was human-borne and its evolution was predicted many years ago, but scientific investigation proved them wrong and concluded that bats might be the origin of SARS-CoV-2 and pangolins act as intermediary species to transmit the virus from bats to humans. Airborne droplets were found to be the leading cause of human-to-human transmission of this virus, but later studies showed that contaminated surfaces and other environmental factors are also involved in its transmission. The evolution of different SARS-CoV-2 variants worsens the condition and has become a challenge to overcome this pandemic. The emergence of COVID-19 is still a mystery, and scientists are unable to explain the exact origin of SARS-CoV-2. This review sheds light on the possible origin of SARS-CoV-2, its transmission, and the key factors that worsen the situation.
