Pyrolytic synthesis of organosilane-functionalized carbon nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation

Enhanced photocatalytic activity of ceria-doped zinc oxide under UV illumination prepared via chemical precipitation

Transition metal oxide has emerged as one of the most potential candidates for environment remediation by utilizing solar energy through photocatalysis. This study compares the optical characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) and ceria-doped zinc oxide (CeZnO) nanoparticles synthesized through a facile chemical precipitation method without using any assistant catalyst. The present work investigates the consequences of ceria (cerium dioxide, CeO2 ) intrusion on the photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoparticles using methylene blue (MB) as a probe pollutant. The CeZnO showed an increase in photoactivity when compared to ZnO nanoparticles for degradation of MB in an aqueous solution under ultraviolet (UV) irradiance. The resulting heterojunction between ZnO and that of ceria enhances the charge separation efficiency showing a strong correlation between ZnO and CeO2 heterojunction on the charge transfer mechanism across the interface.

Room-Temperature Synthesis of Carbon Dot/TiO2 Composites with High Photocatalytic Activity

Benefiting from the wide-range absorption and adjustable energy gap, carbon dots (C-dots) have attracted a great deal of attention and they have been used to sensitize semiconductor nanocomposites to boost the efficiency of energy conversion devices, while there is still a lack of fundamental understanding of the interaction between such materials and their influence on the catalytic activity on the reaction process. In this study, C-dots were used to modify TiO₂ to form a direct Z-scheme (DZS) junction for enhancement of the photocatalytic activity. The C-dot/TiO₂ composite was prepared by ultrasonication at room temperature through coupling between the Ti-O-C bond and electrostatic interaction. The C-dots can dramatically enhance the absorption of the composite by forming the DZS, and the composite is enabled to generate more free radicals, which facilitate ∼10 times higher photocatalytic activity compared to that of TiO₂. As a proof of concept, the as-prepared C-dot/TiO₂ was used for textile wastewater dye degradation. This study provides an efficient approach for room-temperature preparation of C-dot/TiO₂ composites with high photocatalytic activity.

Application in photocatalytic degradation of zearalenone based on graphitic carbon nitride

A semiconductor nano-material was prepared, and its degradation efficiency of zearalenone (ZEN) was studied. The photocatalytic material graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ) was synthesized by the traditional method of hot cracking. Its structure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic degradation experiment showed that under the irradiation of ultraviolet (UV) lamp (254 nm, including 185 nm), g-C₃ N₄ could induce photocatalytic effect, which provided a new method for the degradation of ZEN in real powder samples. The experimental conditions of photocatalytic degradation of the primary reference material of ZEN and ZEN in real powder samples were explored. And the degradation products of ZEN were analyzed after high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Under each optimal experimental conditions, the degradation rate on primary reference material of ZEN and ZEN in real powder samples was 96.0% and 50.0%, respectively. The results in this work provide a theoretical reference and practical basis for the photocatalytic degradation of mycotoxin in real powder samples by g-C₃ N₄ .
