Bioprospecting of cowdung microflora for sustainable agricultural, biotechnological and environmental applications

The review aims at highlighting the manifold applications of cow dung (CD) and CD microflora covering agricultural, biotechnological and environmental applications. The update research on CD microflora and CD in agricultural domain such as biocontrol, growth promotion, organic fertilizer, sulfur oxidation, phosphorus solubilization, zinc mobilization and underlying mechanisms involved in these processes are discussed. The significance of CD applications in tropical agriculture in context to climate change is briefly emphasized. The advances on genomics and proteomics of CD microflora for enhanced yield of enzymes, organic acids, alternative fuels (biomethane and biohydrogen) and other biocommodities, and environmental applications in context to biosorption of heavy metals, biodegradation of xenobiotics, etc. have been given critical attention.

Growth kinetics of some subsurface microbial strains using naphthalene as a probe contaminant

The focus of this study is the unravelling of the microbial dynamics of the biodegradation of naphthalene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, in an aqueous-sediment matrix. The Pour plate procedure was adopted for the isolation of the microbial colonies, while the sub-culturing of the isolates was based on their cultural (biochemical) and morphological characteristics. Investigations showed that the microbial colonies consisted of the bacterial and fungal strains. The logarithmic growth curve was characterized by an initial lag phase, a rapid and exponential increase in cell biomass, a stationary phase and finally a death phase. Both strains in the presence of naphthalene-impacted basal salt medium demonstrated that the microbial growth results in an almost linear increase in biomass concentration--an indication that mass transfer from the solid phase to the liquid phase (lag phase) is limiting for growth. The kinetics of the utilization of naphthalene expressed as the growth and consumption rates indicated that all the microbial strains isolated from an indigenous soil used in this study exhibited a high metabolic affinity for naphthalene. Optimal performance was demonstrated by the bacterial strains that could use naphthalene as their sole carbon and energy source.

Bioremediation of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and petrochemicals with gomeya/cow dung

Use and misuse of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and petrochemicals by man is causing havoc with nature, as they persist as such or as their toxic metabolites. These pollutants bioaccumulate in environment, and they ultimately reach man through various means. They are hazardous because of potential toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and genotoxicity. To rejuvenate nature, remediation methods currently available are usually expensive and might convert one toxic pollutant to another. Bioremediation methods use naturally occurring microorganisms to detoxify man-made pollutants so that they change pollutants to innocuous products that make soil fertile in the process. Taking cue from Ayurveda, Gomeya/cow dung is used as an excellent bioremediation method. Thus, utilizing freely available cow dung as slurry or after composting in rural areas, is a cheap and effective measure to bioremediate the harmful pollutants. Yet, more research in this direction is warranted to bioremediate nonbiodegradable, potentially toxic pollutants.

Benzene bioremediation using cow dung microflora in two phase partitioning bioreactor

Bioremediation of benzene has been carried out using cow dung microflora in a bioreactor. The bioremediation of benzene under the influence of cow dung microflora was found to be 100% and 67.5%, at initial concentrations of 100mg/l and 250 mg/l within 72 h and 168 h respectively; where as at higher concentration (500 mg/l), benzene was found to be inhibitory. Hence the two phase partitioning bioreactor (TPPB) has been designed and developed to carry-out biodegradation at higher concentration. In TPPB 5000 mg/l benzene was biodegraded up to 50.17% over a period of 168 h. Further the Pseudomonas putida MHF 7109 was isolated from cow dung microflora as potential benzene degrader and its ability to degrade benzene at various concentrations was evaluated. The data indicates 100%, 81% and 65% degradation at the concentrations of 50mg/l, 100mg/l, 250 mg/l within the time period of 24h, 96 h and 168 h respectively. The GC-MS data also shows the presence of catechol and 2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde, which confirms the established pathway of benzene biodegradation. The present research proves the potential of cow dung microflora as a source of biomass for benzene biodegradation in TPPB.
