Abstract
The helix-sense inversions of poly(β-phenethyl l-aspartate) (2P) and diblock copolymers (2P-3P), with 2P and poly(β-phenylpropyl l-aspartate) (3P) blocks, were studied in their solid states using synchrotron wide-angle X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering. The characteristic parameters of the π-helix structure of 2P were directly determined in situ after the helix transition at a high temperature. In the 2P-3P block copolymers, the main chains of the 3P blocks initially convert from right- to left-handed α-helices, and then the 2P blocks convert irreversibly from right-handed α-helices to left-handed π-helices. The chemical structures of the side chains of poly(l-aspartic acid ester)s significantly affect their helix transition behaviors.

Abstract
The helix-sense reversal of poly(β-phenylpropyl l-aspartate) (3PLA) in the solid state was studied by synchrotron wide-angle X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering. The direct determination of the characteristic helical pitch before and after the transition revealed that the transition takes place reversibly between the two α-helices having opposite screw-sense during the heating and cooling cycle. While the hexagonal packing remains unaltered, the helix-sense inversion causes discontinuous changes in the molecular arrangement and, by extension, the crystalline dimension. In this study, another transition was detected at a higher temperature from the left-handed α-helix to the π-helix, the molecular chirality being unaffected.

Abstract
In the title homotripeptide {Boc-[Asp(OMe)]3-OPac}, C28H37N3O13, all peptide bonds adopt an s-trans conformation with respect to the N-H and C=O groups. In the crystal, N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds result in an infinite parallel β-sheet structure running along the b-axis direction. The Boc protecting group at the N-terminus of the peptide is disordered over two sites with occupancy factors of 0.504 (5) and 0.496 (5).

Abstract
In this study, the transition process of the helix-sense inversion of poly(β-phenethyl-L-aspartate) was investigated by Raman scattering and 2-dimensional correlation spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent Raman spectra were obtained during the helix-sense inversion. The results of 2-dimensional correlation analysis in the spectral regions of 1600-1800 and 3200-3400 cm-1 showed that the intensity changes of the side-chain ester C═O stretching bands occurred prior to those of amide A and amide I bands in the unwinding process of αR-helix on heating. The sequential order of the intensity changes for amide A, amide I, and the side-chain ester C═O stretching bands during the inversion process was determined. It was found that the conformation change of the side chain occurred prior to that of the main chain for the αR-helix on heating. Thus, we concluded that the transformation of the backbone chain from right-handed to left-handed is triggered by the conformational change of the side chains.

Abstract
The peptide 2.0(5)-helix does exist. It has been experimentally authenticated both in the crystalline state (by X-ray diffraction) and in solution (by several spectroscopic techniques). It is the most common conformation for C(α)-tetrasubstituted α-amino acids with at least two atoms in each side chain, provided that cyclization on the C(α)-atom is absent. X-Ray diffraction has allowed a detailed description of its geometrical and three-dimensional (3D)-structural features. The infrared absorption and the nuclear magnetic resonance parameters characteristics of this multiple, consecutive, fully-extended structure have been described. Conformational energy calculations are in agreement with the experimental findings. As the contribution per amino acid residue to the length of this helix is the longest possible, its exploitation as a molecular spacer is quite promising. However, it is a rather fragile 3D-structure and particularly sensitive to solvent polarity. Interestingly, in such a case, it may reversibly convert to the much shorter 3(10)-helix, thus generating an attractive molecular spring.

Abstract
A set of four hexapeptide sequences, each characterized by four strongly helicogenic Aib residues and all combinations of two isomeric Ile/aIle residues at positions 2 and 5, was synthesized by solution methods and fully characterized. A detailed solution (by FT-IR absorption, NMR, and CD techniques) and solid/crystalline state (by X-ray diffraction) conformational investigation allowed us to validate our assumption that all four peptides are folded in well-developed 3(10)-helical structures. However, the most relevant conformational conclusion extracted from the present 3D-analysis is that the handedness of the 3(10)-helical structures formed does not seem to be sensitive to the configurational change at the beta-carbon atom of the constituent Ile versus the diastereomeric aIle residues (in other words, the dominant control on this important structural parameter appears to be exerted by the chirality of the amino acid alpha-carbon atom). These results complement published findings on the diverging relative stabilities of the intermolecularly H-bonded beta-sheet structures generated by Ile versus aIle homo-oligopeptides.

Abstract
A series of chiral binaphthyl titanium alkoxide complexes were synthesized. Among them, chiral titanium complex [(R)-3,3'-dibromo-2,2'-binaphthoxy](di-tert-butoxy)titanium(IV) (R-3) exists as a crystallographic C2 dimer in the solid state but a monomer in solution at room temperature. Application of R-3 in the helix-sense-selective polymerization of achiral carbodiimide, N-(1-anthryl)-N'-octadecylcarbodiimide (1), yielded a well-defined regioregular, stereoregular poly[N-(1-anthryl)-N'-octadecylguanidine] (poly-1b) with a relatively narrow polymer dispersity index of 2.7. Full racemization of poly-1b at +80 degrees C in toluene requires more than 100 h. Interestingly, poly-1b was found to undergo fast reversible chiroptical switching at +38.5 degrees C in toluene. Furthermore, at room temperature, poly-1b shows a positively signed Cotton effect in toluene, but negative ones in THF and chloroform, respectively. The chiroptical switching takes place around the toluene content of 90% (vol) in the mixed toluene/THF solvents. This is the first example of chiroptical switching phenomenon occurring in a helical polymer possessing no chiral moieties in the polymer chains. We believe this reversible chiroptical switching phenomenon occurs by reorientation of anthracene rings relative to the chain director.

Abstract
This is one of a series of studies on the reversal of the helix sense of polyaspartates originated from the pioneering work of Goodman and his associates in 1960s. Poly(beta-p-chlorobenzyl L-aspartate) (PClBLA) is one of the well-studied polyaspartate derivatives in both solution and the solid state. The chemical structure of PClBLA differs from those of poly(beta-benzyl L-aspartate) (PBLA) and poly(beta-phenethyl L-aspartate) (PPLA) only at the terminal of the relatively long side chain. PBLA takes a left-handed form (L) in conventional helicoidal solvents and does not exhibit any screw-sense inversion. In contrast to PBLA, both PClBLA and PPLA form a right-handed helix (R) in chlorinated alkane solvents and exhibits a reversal of alpha-helix sense at higher temperatures. Yet the transition behaviors in the presence of denaturant acid are quite different between these two polymers. While PPLA exhibits transitions such as R --> L --> coil by lowering temperature, PClBLA directly goes into the coil state without showing the reentrant L form. The cause of these phenomenological differences among these polymers has been investigated by constructing the phase diagram.

Abstract
Conformational studies of X[-L-Tyr(Bzl)-]n-series bound to polyethyleneglycol (X = H2, Nps; n = 3-8) in the solid state and in solvents of different polarities and capabilities of forming hydrogen bonds are reported. By using i.r. absorption, the occurrence of the beta-structure in the higher oligomers in the solid state was established. By means of i.r. absorption and CD the onset of that ordered conformation in solution was assessed as a function of chain length. The effects induced by the presence of the N-protecting group and added base, and by changing the nature of solvent on the conformational preferences of the [-L-Tyr(Bzl)-]n homo-peptides were also examined. The 2-nitrophenylsulphenyl chromophoric derivative of the alpha-amino group is proposed as a circular dichroism sensor for beta-structure in peptides.
