A sustainable bioremediation of vanadium from marine environment and value-addition using potential thraustochytrids

Rising concerns about global environmental degradation underscore the pressing need for effective solutions to combat heavy metal pollution. Industries such as semiconductor and steel production discharge vanadium into marine ecosystems, posing significant risks to both marine life and human health. The current study investigates efficacy of utilizing marine thraustochytrid for efficient vanadium removal outcompeting other microbial sources. By optimizing pH and temperature conditions during harvesting, achieved a remarkable 50.80 % enhancement in vanadium removal efficiency, from 19.31 to 29.12 mg/L. Furthermore, chelating agents EDTA and citric acid supplementation demonstrated promising enhancements, reaching up to 31.21 and 32.59 mg/L, respectively. Notably, vanadium-treated biomass supplemented with citric acid exhibited maximum enhancement in lipid content, from 58.47 to 75.34 %, indicating thraustochytrid's potential for biofuel production. This study presents a sustainable approach for industrial-scale vanadium bioremediation, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals focused on dual benefits of environmental protection and renewable energy.

Integration of genetic engineering and multi-factor fermentation optimization for co-production of carotenoid and DHA in Schizochytrium sp

Schizochytrium sp., a microalga with high lipid content, holds the potential for co-producing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and carotenoids. In this study, the ability of Schizochytrium sp. to naturally produce carotenoids was systematically explored. Further, by enhancing the precursor supply of geranylgeranyl diphosphate, regulating carbon source through sugar limitation fermentation and employing a combination of response surface methodology and artificial neural networks to precisely optimize nitrogen sources, a new record of 43-fold increase in β-carotene titer was achieved in the 5L bioreactor (653.2 mg/L). Meanwhile, a high DHA content was maintained (13.4 g/L). Furthermore, the use of corn stover hydrolysate has effectively lowered the production costs of carotenoid and DHA while sustaining elevated production levels (with total carotenoid titer and DHA titer reached 502.0 mg/L and 13.2 g/L, respectively). Bioprocess conditions and regulation factors to optimize squalene production in thraustochytrids

Squalene is a widely distributed natural triterpene, as it is a key precursor in the biosynthesis of all sterols. It is a compound of high commercial value worldwide because it has nutritional, medicinal, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications, due to its different biological properties. The main source of extraction has been shark liver oil, which is currently unviable on a larger scale due to the impacts of overexploitation. Secondary sources are mainly vegetable oils, although a limited one, as they allow low productive yields. Due to the diversity of applications that squalene presents and its growing demand, there is an increasing interest in identifying sustainable sources of extraction. Wild species of thraustochytrids, which are heterotrophic protists, have been identified to have the highest squalene content compared to bacteria, yeasts, microalgae, and vegetable sources. Several studies have been carried out to identify the bioprocess conditions and regulation factors, such as the use of eustressors that promote an increase in the production of this triterpene; however, studies focused on optimizing their productive yields are still in its infancy. This review includes the current trends that also comprises the advances in genetic regulations in these microorganisms, with a view to identify the culture conditions that have been favorable in increasing the production of squalene, and the influences that both bioprocess conditions and applied regulation factors partake at a metabolic level.
