Expressing Sexuality in Silent and Weep: Experience of Chinese People With Intellectual Disabilities and Parents

BACKGROUND

Sexual well-being significantly impacts the overall quality of life for individuals with and without intellectual disabilities. Notably, parents play a pivotal role in influencing their children's sexual development, and their attitudes towards this topic are shaped by Chinese sociocultural values.

METHODS

This study employed Interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the experiences and attitudes of five individuals with intellectual disabilities and seven parents/caregivers regarding the sexual needs of their adult offspring with intellectual disabilities.

RESULTS

The findings revealed participants' experiences and concerns, often navigating the challenges posed by traditional Chinese cultural restrictions through responses characterised as 'Silent' (avoidance of discussion) and 'Weep' (deep-seated psycho-emotional burden).

CONCLUSIONS

This research emphasises the importance of a pluralistic society and advocates for promoting sexual autonomy among individuals with intellectual disabilities. The findings have implications for future practises and highlight the need for a more inclusive and compassionate approach to their sexual well-being.

Validation of the PL-C Quest in China: understanding the pictorial physical literacy self-report scale

Introduction

The notion of physical literacy is gaining interest from several countries as a potential mechanism for understanding the development of the physical self. This research endeavor represents an inaugural attempt to translate the Australian Physical Literacy Questionnaire for Children (PL-C Quest) into Chinese to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the PL-C Quest to assess physical literacy among children in mainland China.

Methods

The Beaton translation paradigm was used to carry out language translation, back-translation, cultural adaptation, and presurveys. Data were collected from 642 children aged 6-12 years, with a mean age of 9.71 years (SD 1.816), to test the reliability of the Chinese version of the PL-C Quest.

Results

The PL-C Quest items translated well (6.187 ~ 15.499) and correlated well (0.441 ~ 0.622). The Chinese version of the PL-C Quest had good reliability, with retest reliability values ranging from 0.91 to 0.74, Cronbach's alpha from 0.65 to 0.894, and McDonald's ω from the Spearman-Brown Coefficient was 0.84. The validity results are acceptable because the CFI, IFI, and TLI values are above 0.8 and close to 0.9, but the model fit's chi-square degrees-of-freedom ratio of 2.299, the RMSEA of 0.05, which was less than 0.08.

Discussion

After translation and cultural adaptation, the Chinese version of the PL-C Quest is a reliable measurement tool and can be used in the Chinese region.

Development and validation of a scale assessing parental varied responses to Chinese adolescents' negative emotions

OBJECTIVES

Parental responses to children's negative emotions (PRCNE) constitute a critical construct in the study of emotion socialization in children and adolescents. The objective of this research was to develop and validate a concise scale for assessing how adolescents perceive PRCNE in a Chinese context, resulting in the creation of the parental varied responses to Chinese adolescents' negative emotions (PVRCANE) scale. The PVRCANE aims to evaluate seven forms of PRCNE, including the six types encompassed by the commonly used Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale-Adolescent Version (CCNES-AV), as well as an additional, culturally specific category frequently seen in Chinese families: didactic talk and teaching.

METHODS

In Study 1, a group of participants (N = 901, Mage  = 13.39 years, SD = 0.92) completed the initial PVRCANE and the CCNES-Adolescent Version. In Study 2: A separate group of participants (N = 320, Mage  = 13.54 years, SD = 0.57) filled in PVRCANE and scales evaluating parental socialization goals and adolescents' depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

In Study 1, factor analyses showed that a four-factor structure best fit the data, leading to the final version of the PVRCANE, which includes 35 items. PVRCANE scores exhibited good internal consistency (Omega > 0.79) and convergent validity, demonstrated by their close correlation with traditional CCNES scores. Study 2 confirmed the PVRCANE's measurement invariance for both male and female parents and demonstrated criterion validity by showing significant relationships between PVRCANE scores, parental socialization goals, and adolescents' symptoms of depression.

CONCLUSION

The PVRCANE is a brief, valid, and reliable scale for assessing PRCNE in Chinese adolescents. The study concludes with a discussion on future directions and how this research enhances the existing literature on emotion socialization, with a particular emphasis on the scale's potential application in other cultural settings.

Modeling and analysis of Chinese culture and communication

Along with many other Asian countries, China's communication differs from, and at times, conflicts with, the United States, which is considered more collectivist and low-contact than that of the United States. The topic of the chapter is mental, physical, and behavioral health. This ancient society is one of the world's oldest, with a history spanning many thousand years. These aspects of Chinese culture have significant weight in the Chinese community and society. Chinese participants care deeply about the cultural context, whether social scientists, humanists, or clinical psychiatrists. Based on several studies, Chinese culture influences various aspects of health, including physical and mental well-being, parent-child interactions and social connections, goals for individuals and groups, and health care delivery models. According to research on the subject, traditional Confucian cultural norms have influenced Chinese communication features. To maintain harmonious ties, the Chinese rely heavily on indirect communication. For them, the way you stand, your attitude, and even the tone of your voice all communicate a lot more than just words. They use imprecise language and may understate the significance of what they say. For the MA-CCC model, a brand-new approach has been presented. As long as this Confucian-influenced Chinese communication style persists, it will significantly impact Chinese society and communication between Chinese professionals and their western counterparts. However, the frequency of attachment terms was lower in Chinese literature; the findings showed a rising tendency for AC (affectionate communication) in recent decades. In addition, the frequency of love terms in Chinese novels was linked positively to individuality. As a result of societal shifts, affection sharing becomes more common in individualistic metropolitan settings, as these findings showa performance of 94.2% enhancement.

Culture and human development: Where did it go? And where is it going?

Culture and human development blossomed as a research enterprise in the last quarter of the 20th century; the energy and innovation of that enterprise are less evident now. Where did it go, and where is it going? In this essay, we examine the shifting fields of cross-cultural psychology, psychological anthropology, cultural psychology, indigenous psychology, and the surge of research on Individualism/Collectivism. Offering both academic and personal perspectives, we reflect on the importance of "culture" as a construct, and the value of focusing on individual development in that context. The way forward now, we suggest, is international and intercultural collaboration of scientists. The challenge for training new researchers from diverse backgrounds, however, is to equip them with the knowledge and insights gained from cross-cultural psychology, psychological anthropology, and their own cultures, rather than simply making the next generation of scholars into new representatives of Western theories of development.
