Abstract
The valence and core photoelectron spectra of three substituted disulfide systems, α-lipoic acid, trans-4,5-dihydroxy-1,2-dithiane, and di-Boc-cystamine, are presented alongside detailed theoretical analysis based on equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles doubles for ionization potentials and the nuclear ensemble approach. A comparison of the linear and five- and six-membered ring cyclic structures reveals that the energetic separation of the non-bonding sulfur orbitals can be used to calculate a reliable estimate of the C-S-S-C dihedral angle, even for substituted disulfides, and that the sulfur 2p, oxygen 1s, and valence band photoelectron spectra are a useful site-specific probe of hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
Asparagusic acid (1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid) is a simple sulphur-containing 5-membered heterocyclic compound that appears unique to asparagus, though other dithiolane derivatives have been identified in non-food species. This molecule, apparently innocuous toxicologically to man, is the most probable culprit responsible for the curious excretion of odorous urine following asparagus ingestion. The presence of the two adjacent sulphur atoms leads to an enhanced chemical reactivity, endowing it with biological properties including the ability to substitute potentially for α-lipoic acid in α-keto-acid oxidation systems. This brief review collects the scattered data available in the literature concerning asparagusic acid and highlights its properties, intermediary metabolism and exploratory applications.

Abstract
Under short-wavelength UV irradiation, lipoic acid (LipSS) and its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), undergo photoionization processes through a bi- or monophotonic pathway. After ionization, the LipSS radical cation (LipSS*+) and radical anion (LipSS*-) are generated. LipSS*- can be converted to equimolar amounts of LipSS and DHLA through second-order decay. Triplet acetone can be quenched by LipSS and DHLA with a rate close to the diffusion-controlled limit. The mechanism was further confirmed by continuous irradiation experiments. When LipSS is directly irradiated with UVA light, the first excited triplet state of LipSS is observed, with a lifetime tau=75 ns. Characteristic reactions include triplet energy transfer to oxygen and beta-carotene and addition to isoprene. The lifetime of triplet LipSS is also shortened by addition of water and methanol.

Abstract
[reaction: see text]1,2-Dithiolanes present several points of interest for both peptide and medicinal chemistry, yet no chiral alpha-amino acids containing this five-membered heterocyclic system are available. We report here the first synthesis of N- and C-protected derivative of (S)-2-amino-3-(1,2-dithiolan-4-yl)propionic acid (Adp) and its 1,3-dithiolic form.

Abstract
Due to their relevant biological functions and specific chemical reactivity 1,2-dithiolanes (five-membered cyclic disulfides) represent an emerging class of heterocyclic compounds. However, despite the extensive research centered on lipoic acid and its analogues, only very few data are at the present available on peptides containing this ring system. We report here synthesis, conformation and bioactivity of a fMLF-OMe analogue, namely For-Met-Adt-Phe-OMe (7), in which the residue of the 4-amino-1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid (Adt) (4) replaces the central L-leucine. The crystal conformation of the synthetic intermediate Boc-Adt-OMe (5) is also described and compared to that of lipoic acid (R-1,2-dithiolane-3-pentanoic acid) (3) and asparagusic acid (1,2-dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid) (2).

Abstract
The oxidation of the antioxidants dihydrolipoate and lipoamide by triplet duroquinone (3DQ) has been studied by laser flash photolysis and time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy. Reaction of 3DQ with lipoamide by electron transfer [k(H2O)/k(D2O approximately 1] was more rapid than with dihydrolipoate, in which a proton is also involved [k(H2O)/k(D2O approximately 2]. For dihydrolipoate at neutral pH the undeprotonated form was the major reactive species with k approximately 10(9) dm3 mol-1 s-1. At higher pH values the reaction of ionised (thiolate) forms was observed with k > or = 4 x 10(9) dm3 mol-1 s-1. The electron transfer mechanism of reaction between 3DQ and lipoamide was confirmed by TR3 spectra in which formation of the durosemiquinone radical anion and lipoamide disulfide radical cation (RSS+.) was observed.
