Abstract
The reaction of electron-deficient alkenes with alkoxyalkynyl Fischer carbene complexes (FCCs) represents a straightforward route to a new type of captodative (donor-acceptor) alkynylcyclopropanes, which have been prepared in moderate to high yields and in a diastereoselective manner. Some studies regarding the employment of additives to facilitate the recovery of the metal moiety after the reaction are also described. Finally, the first example of a cyclopropanation reaction through employing Fischer carbene complexes under microwave irradiation is presented; this method proved to be an advantageous alternative to the thermal reaction.

Abstract
beta-Substituted alkenylcarbene complexes react with methyl ketone lithium enolates to give different carbocyclization products depending on the structure of the lithium enolate, on the metal of the carbene complex, and on the reaction media. Thus, the reactions of aryl and alkyl methyl ketone lithium enolates with beta-substituted alkenyl chromium and tungsten carbene complexes in diethyl ether afford 1,3-cyclopentanediol derivatives derived from a formal [2+2+1] carbocyclization reaction. However, the lithium enolates of acetone and tungsten complexes furnish formal [3+2+2] carbocyclization products. In the case of alkynyl methyl ketone lithium enolates, competitive formal [2+2+1] and [3+2] carbocyclization reactions occur and 1,3-cyclopentanediol and 3-cyclopentenol derivatives are formed. Conversely, alkenyl methyl ketone lithium enolates react with alkenylcarbene complexes under the same reaction conditions to form 2-cycloheptenone derivatives by a formal [4+3] carbocyclization reaction. Finally, when the reaction was performed in the presence of a coordinating medium, the [3+2] carbocyclization pattern was observed independently of the nature of the methyl ketone lithium enolate used.

Abstract
Reaction of alpha,beta-unsaturated methoxycarbene complexes 1 and 11 with methyl ketone lithium enolates 2 leads to the corresponding five-membered carbocyclic compounds 4 or diast-4 and 12. The influence of the solvent and/or cosolvent (PMDTA), which turned out to be crucial to direct the reaction to 4 or diast-4, is studied, and a tentative mechanism according to these facts is proposed. In addition, the reaction of carbene complex 1a with alkynyl methyl ketone lithium enolates can be directed to the formal [3 + 2] or [4 + 1] cyclization products by a slight variation of the reaction conditions. Finally, consecutive three-component coupling reactions with carbene complex 1a, lithium enolates 2, and aldehydes 18 to give, in a diastereoselective way, hydroxy carbonyl compounds 19 and tricyclic polyethers 20 are presented.

Abstract
Aryl-2-(N-methyl/benzyl-3-indolyl)cyclopropyl ketones 2a-m are shown to undergo a novel unexpected domino carbocationic rearrangement in the presence of SnCl(4)/CH(3)NO(2) yielding 2-aroyl-3-aryl-1H-cyclopenta[c]carbazoles 3a-m in good yields. The possible mechanistic pathway for this interesting transformation involves a series of cascade events, (a) electrophilic ring opening of cyclopropyl ketone, (b) intermolecular enol capture of the resulting zwitterionic intermediate, (c) electrophilic dimerization of indole moieties to give tetrahydrocarbazole intermediate and its subsequent aromatization by elimination of an indole moiety and dehydrogenation, and (d) intramolecular aldol condensation of the side chain to give a cyclopentene ring. The overall transformation involves formation of three carbon-carbon bonds along with a fused benzene and a substituted cyclopentene ring in one-pot operation from simple indole precursors.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The first cyclopropanation reaction of olefins with Fischer dialkylaminocarbene complexes is presented. The reaction yields 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid derivatives in a single step, usually with high diastereoselectivity. An approach to the asymmetric version of this reaction is also presented. The synthetic utility of the procedure is exemplified by the synthesis of both cycles of metanoproline in a single step. In addition, the synthesis of the first Fischer carbene containing a halocarbonyl group is reported.

Abstract
Conjugate adducts obtained by base-induced 1,4-addition-elimination of various aryl/heteroaryl acetonitriles with 1-(2-arylcyclopropyl)-3,3-(bismethylthio)-2-propen-1-ones have been shown to undergo facile acid-induced domino carbocationic rearrangement yielding a variety of substituted tricyclic aromatic and heteroaromatic frameworks in high yields in a one-pot operation. The methodology provides efficient, high-yield routes for synthesis of novel substituted dihydrophenalenes, dihydrobenzo[d,e]anthracene, cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, and fused heteroaromatics such as substituted 4,5-dihydrobenzo[c,d]indole, dihydronaphtho[1,8-b,c]thiophene, dihydroindeno[5,4-b]- and -[4,5-b]-thiophenes, cyclopenta[a]carbazole, and dihydrocyclopenta[e]indazol-3-one derivatives. The probable mechanism of this interesting domino process appears to involve stepwise or concomitant acid-induced ring opening and intramolecular cyclocondensation of cyclopropyl ketones to give benzo-fused arene (or heteroarene) intermediates bearing a reactive benzylic carbocation that is captured intramolecularly either by a preexisting aromatic (or heteroaromatic) ring or by a newly formed benzene ring to give either peri-fused or angularly fused products, respectively. Thus, the overall domino process entails formation of two C-C bonds, a substituted benzene ring along with a peri-fused cyclohexane or angularly fused cyclopentane ring in a single operation.

Abstract
The thermal reaction of 2-haloethoxy- and 3-chloropropoxy(alkenyl)carbene complexes of chromium with electronically neutral alkenes furnished diastereoselectively the corresponding 1-haloalkoxy-l-vinylcyclopropanes that, subjected to subsequent halogen-lithium exchange reactions, provided vinylcyclopropanols or compounds containing the spiro[cyclopropane-tetrahydrofuran/tetrahydropyran] structure, depending on the nature of both the halogen atom and the lithiating reagent. The hydroxycyclopropanation reaction can be efficiently achieved in a one-pot fashion.

Abstract
The cyclopropanation reaction of chromium Fischer carbene complexes with alkenyl oxazolines has been studied in both racemic and enantioselective fashions. The oxazolinyl group acts as both electron-acceptor substituent and chiral auxiliary. Achiral (4,4-dimethyloxazolin-2-yl)alkenes derived from trans-crotonic and trans-cinnamic acids 2a,b undergo the cyclopropanation reaction to give 4a-d,g with excellent diastereoselectivity (trans/cis ratio between 93:7 and >97:3), while those derived from acrylic and metacrylic acids 2c,d give the cyclopropanes 4e,f,h with much lower selectivity (trans/cis ratio between 68:32 and 83:17). The homogeneous catalytic hydrogenolysis of 4 leads in a selective manner to 5 or 6, depending on the nature of the R3 substituent. The removal of the oxazoline moiety is achieved by carboxybenzylation/hydrolysis and ester reduction, yielding monoprotected 1,4- and 1,3-diols 9 and 11, respectively. The alkenes derived from enantiopure (S)-valinol and (S)-tert-leucinol 3 led to cyclopropanes trans-12 with high relative and absolute stereocontrol. Using tert-leucinol as the auxiliary permits attaining total facial stereoselectivity (>98% ee). Reductive cleavage of the cyclopropane ring and removal of the auxiliary afford the enriched alcohols (3S,4S)-9 and (S)-11. The stereochemical outcome of the cyclopropanation reaction is rationalized by a trans approach of the s-cis conformer of the alkenyl oxazoline to the carbene complex involving the less hindered face of the oxazoline auxiliary and the re-face of the carbene complex.

Abstract
The metal carbene complexes, discovered by E. O. Fischer at the start of the 1960s and carrying his name, have since proved themselves to be irreplaceable building blocks for organic synthesis. In particular, since the discovery of the Dötz reaction, a formal cycloaddition of Fischer alpha,beta-unsaturated carbene complexes to alkynes with CO insertion, this area of chemistry has become increasingly interesting to organic chemists. In spite of the considerable diversity of reactions performed with these complexes, proper selection of substrates and careful adjustment of the reaction conditions have allowed, in most cases the perfectly selective preparation of individual compounds of this enormous range of products. The spectrum of new successes begins with the conventional Diels-Alder reaction of alkynylcarbene complexes and the formal regioselective [3+2] cycloaddition of alkenylcarbene complexes to alkynes. It extends much further, however, from cascade reactions with the formation of oligofunctional and oligocyclic products of impressive molecular complexity to complex, formal [3+6] cocyclizations in which six bonds are formed in a single operational step. Beyond doubt, the methodological arsenal of preparative organic chemistry cannot be imagined any more without the valuable transformations of the Fischer carbene complexes; it only remains to be seen whether one or other of the numerous new types of cocyclization products of these complexes can establish itself as a lead structure in the search for biologically active compounds.
