Abstract
A new electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolation reagent, N-trifluoromethylselenophthalimide (Phth-SeCF3), was developed. A strategy for the synthesis of 4-trifluoromethylselenolated isoxazoles through electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolation cyclization has been established by using Phth-SeCF3 as an electrophilic reagent. Moreover, this protocol has the features of broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and high yields.

Abstract
A visible-light-induced metal-free trifluoromethylselenolation of aryl iodides and bromides with [Me4N][SeCF3] is described. The reaction was conducted at ambient temperature by successfully harnessing the light-sensitive SeCF3 reagent. Mechanistically, the EDA complexes between aryl halide and the -SeCF3 anion or the base might be formed and excited by light, which subsequently undergo intracomplex SET processes to generate aryl and •SeCF3 radicals as key intermediates, allowing a convenient and green access to various aryl trifluoromethyl selenoethers.

Abstract
Herein, we have developed a metal-free, Lewis acid promoted vicinal oxytrifluoromethylselenolation of alkenes using trifluoromethyl selenoxides as electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolation reagents and alcohols as nucleophiles. With less steric and good nucleophilic solvents (such as ethanol and methol), Tf2O-catalyzed oxytrifluoromethylselenolation could be realized, while stoichiometric Tf2O was required to promote full transformation with less nucleophilic and steric solvents (such as isopropanol and tert-butanol). The reaction featured good substrate scope, functional group compatibility, and diastereoselectivity. This method could be further applied to oxytrifluoromethylselenolation, aminotrifluoromethylselenolation with stoichiometric nucleophiles under modified conditions. A mechanism involving a seleniranium ion was proposed based on the preliminary results.

Abstract
Trifluoromethylselenolation of arenes with [Me4N][SeCF3] in the presence of an oxidant through Pd-catalyzed C(sp2)-H activation under the assistance of a directing group is established for the first time. The reaction tolerates different directing groups and a variety of functional groups, enabling selective installation of a SeCF3 moiety onto the ortho positions of arenes. Mechanistic studies revealed that the CF3SeSeCF3 intermediate in situ generated from oxidation of [Me4N][SeCF3] might be the real SeCF3 reagent in the reaction.

Abstract
The trifluoromethylselenyl group (CF3Se) has become an emerging fluorinated moiety in synthetic chemistry due to its high Hansch lipophilicity parameter and strong electron-withdrawing effect. The trifluoromethylselenolation is hampered by limited synthetic methods and related reagents. Herein, we designed and synthesized the new electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolation reagents, trifluoromethyl selenoxides, which are easy to prepare and easy-to-handle and are not moisture or air sensitive. The selenoxides are successfully applied to metal-free C-H trifluoromethylselenolation of a series of (hetero)arenes.

Abstract
An oxidative copper-mediated double trifluoromethylselenolation of terminal 2-alkynylanilines using [(bpy)CuSeCF3]2 is reported, providing a moderately efficient and convenient approach to 2,3-bis(trifluoromethylseleno)indoles. Mechanistic studies show that a cascade sequence of oxidation, trifluoromethylselenolation, 5-endo-dig cyclization, and elimination is involved in this transformation.

Abstract
Chalcogen-containing carboranes have been known for several decades and possess stable exopolyhedral B(9)-Se and B(9)-Te σ bonds despite the electron-donating ability of the B(9) vertex. While these molecules are known, little has been done to thoroughly evaluate their electrophilic and nucleophilic behavior. Herein, we report an assessment of the electrophilic reactivity of m-carboranylselenyl(II), -tellurenyl(II), and -tellurenyl(IV) chlorides and establish their reactivity pattern with Grignard reagents, alkenes, alkynes, enolates, and electron-rich arenes. These electrophilic reactions afford unique electron-rich B-Y-C (Y = Se, Te) bonding motifs not commonly found before. Furthermore, we show that m-carboranylselenolate, and even m-carboranyltellurolate, can be competent nucleophiles and participate in nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions. Arene substitution chemistry is shown to be further extended to electron-rich species via palladium-mediated cross-coupling chemistry.

Abstract
Several CF3 Se-substituted α-amino acid derivatives, such as (R)-2-amino-3-((trifluoromethyl)selanyl)propanoates (5 a/6 a), (S)-2-amino-4-((trifluoromethyl)selanyl)butanoates (5 b/6 b), (2R,3R)-2-amino-3-((trifluoromethyl)selanyl)butanoates (5 c/6 c), (R)-2-((S)-2-amino-3-phenylpropanamido)-3-((trifluoromethyl)selanyl)propanoates (11 a/12 a), and (R)-2-(2-aminoacetamido)-3-((trifluoromethyl)selanyl)propanoates (11 b/12 b), were readily synthesized from natural amino acids and [Me4 N][SeCF3 ]. The primary in vitro cytotoxicity assays revealed that compounds 6 a, 11 a and 12 a were more effective cell growth inhibitors than the other tested CF3 Se-substituted derivatives towards MCF-7, HCT116, and SK-OV-3 cells, with their IC50 values being less than 10 μM for MCF-7 and HCT116 cells. This study indicated the potentials of CF3 Se moiety as a pharmaceutically relevant group in the design and synthesis of novel biologically active molecules.

Abstract
An efficient method for oxidative trifluoromethylselenolation/N-acylation of indoles with excess [Me4N][SeCF3] in the presence of acyl peroxides and their derivatives is described. The reaction is easy to handle, proceeds smoothly at room temperature under metal-free conditions, and shows advantages such as good functional group tolerance, excellent regioselectivity, and compatibility of a number of substrates, producing 1-acyl and 3-trifluoromethylselanyl substituted indoles in good yields. Acyl peroxides and peroxycarboxylic acid behave as both oxidants and acyl sources in the transformation. This one-pot procedure provides a convenient access to a new class of indole derivatives, representing the first trifluoromethylselanyl bifunctionalization of indoles with the nucleophilic [Me4N][SeCF3] reagent.

We describe the synthesis, reactivity, and antithrombotic and anti-angiogenesis activity of difluoroallicin (S-(2-fluoroallyl) 2-fluoroprop-2-ene-1-sulfinothioate) and S-2-fluoro-2-propenyl-l-cysteine, both easily prepared from commercially available 3-chloro-2-fluoroprop-1-ene, as well as the synthesis of 1,2-bis(2-fluoroallyl)disulfane, 5-fluoro-3-(1-fluorovinyl)-3,4-dihydro-1,2-dithiin, trifluoroajoene ((E,Z)-1-(2-fluoro-3-((2-fluoroallyl)sulfinyl)prop-1-en-1-yl)-2-(2-fluoroallyl)disulfane), and a bis(2-fluoroallyl)polysulfane mixture. All tested organosulfur compounds demonstrated effective inhibition of either FGF or VEG-mediated angiogenesis (anti-angiogenesis activity) in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) or the mouse Matrigel® models. No embryo mortality was observed. Difluoroallicin demonstrated greater inhibition (p < 0.01) versus organosulfur compounds tested. Difluoroallicin demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition of angiogenesis in the mouse Matrigel® model, with maximal inhibition at 0.01 mg/implant. Allicin and difluoroallicin showed an effective antiplatelet effect in suppressing platelet aggregation compared to other organosulfur compounds tested. In platelet/fibrin clotting (anti-coagulant activity), difluoroallicin showed concentration-dependent inhibition of clot strength compared to allicin and the other organosulfur compounds tested.

Selenium Speciation in the Fountain Creek Watershed (Colorado, USA) Correlates with Water Hardness, Ca and Mg Levels. Molecules 2017; 22:molecules22050708. Abstract
The environmental levels of selenium (Se) are regulated and strictly enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of the toxicity that Se can exert at high levels. However, speciation plays an important role in the overall toxicity of Se, and only when speciation analysis has been conducted will a detailed understanding of the system be possible. In the following, we carried out the speciation analysis of the creek waters in three of the main tributaries—Upper Fountain Creek, Monument Creek and Lower Fountain Creek—located in the Fountain Creek Watershed (Colorado, USA). There are statistically significant differences between the Se, Ca and Mg, levels in each of the tributaries and seasonal swings in Se, Ca and Mg levels have been observed. There are also statistically significant differences between the Se levels when grouped by Pierre Shale type. These factors are considered when determining the forms of Se present and analyzing their chemistry using the reported thermodynamic relationships considering Ca2+, Mg2+, SeO42−, SeO32− and carbonates. This analysis demonstrated that the correlation between Se and water hardness can be explained in terms of formation of soluble CaSeO4. The speciation analysis demonstrated that for the Fountain Creek waters, the Ca2+ ion may be mainly responsible for the observed correlation with the Se level. Considering that the Mg2+ level is also correlating linearly with the Se levels it is important to recognize that without Mg2+ the Ca2+ would be significantly reduced. The major role of Mg2+ is thus to raise the Ca2+ levels despite the equilibria with carbonate and other anions that would otherwise decrease Ca2+ levels.
