Is Camphor the Future in Supporting Therapy for Skin Infections?

The aim of this review is to present the potential application of camphor-a bicyclic monoterpene ketone-in the prevention of skin infections. Skin diseases represent a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by prolonged symptoms that significantly diminish the quality of life. They affect the dermis, the epidermis, and even subcutaneous tissue. They very often have a bacterial or fungal background. Therapy for dermatological skin disorders is difficult and long-term. Therefore, it is important to find a compound, preferably of natural origin, that (i) prevents the initiation of this infection and (ii) supports the skin's repair process. Based on its documented anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-acne, anesthetic, strengthening, and warming properties, camphor can be used as a preventative measure in dermatological infectious diseases and as a component in medical and cosmetic products. This work discusses the structure and physicochemical properties of camphor, its occurrence, and methods of obtaining it from natural sources as well as through chemical synthesis. The use of camphor in industrial preparations is also presented. Additionally, after a detailed review of the literature, the metabolism of camphor, its interactions with other medicinal substances, and its antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi involved in skin diseases are discussed with regard to their resistance.

Effect of rosemary addition on the sensorial and physicochemical qualities of dry-cured ham slices. Measurement of camphor transfer

This study determined the effect of three concentrations (R1: high, R2: medium and R3: low) of rosemary added to dry-cured ham slices vacuum packaged. pH and the colour parameters were evaluated at 0, 7, 14, 28 and 60 days of storage; visual appearance, odour, flavour and camphor content were assessed at days 7, 14, 28 and 60. The rosemary concentration changed the colour parameters, significantly altering the visual appearance (p < 0.001 at 7 and 14 days; p < 0.5 at day 28), but did not affect the pH, neither odour nor flavour. Nevertheless, significant differences were found with the time on R1 and R2 in odour (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively) and in flavour (p < 0.001). Camphor content was similar in all samples but changed over the time in R1 (p < 0.001) and R2 (p < 0.01). In conclusion, despite the differences observed, it is evident that the addition of this spice was to the liking of the panellists, in any of the concentrations used.

Research progress on mechanism of Chinese Kaiqiao herbs in management of neuropathic pain

The Chinese herbal medicine for Kaiqiao, such as borneol, musk, grassleaf sweetflag rhizome, storax and camphor, have been prescribed in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and now are widely used for neuropathic pain, the main components of which are annular compounds. Studies have shown that their analgesic mechanisms include regulating the expression of γ-aminobutyric acid, N-methyl- D-aspartic acid and other receptors; regulating ion channel function; inhibiting inflammatory response, oxidative stress and apoptosis; regulating neurotransmission and neuronal excitability; and participating in neuroprotection and neurological repair. It is suggested that the mechanisms of action of Kaiqiao herbs in central nervous system analgesia should be further explored; high-quality rapid screening of drug targets may be used, and the targeted agents using the characteristics of Kaiqiao herbs would be developed. This article reviews the research progress on the effect mechanism of traditional Kaiqiao herbs in the treatment of neuropathic pain to provide further research directions.

Camphor nitroimine: a key building block in unusual transformations and its applications in the synthesis of bioactive compounds

The development of new drugs requires a lot of time and high financial investments. It involves a research network in which there is the participation of several researchers from different areas. For a new drug to reach the market, thousands of substances must be evaluated. There are several tools for this and the use of suitable building blocks can facilitate the process by allowing a lead compound to have suitable parameters. These compounds are key structures containing special functional groups that also permit adequate synthetic transformations, leading to several structures of interest in a short period of time. In this review, the use of camphor nitroimine as a potential key building block is explored. Derived from camphor, an abundant natural product present in various plant species, this nitroimine has proved to be quite versatile, allowing the access to substances with miscellaneous biological activities, ligands to asymmetric catalysis, asymmetric oxidants, O-N transfer agents and other applications. Its easy conversion to camphecene and other derivatives is described, as well as their applications in medicinal chemistry. Druglikeness analyses were performed on these studied agents as well as on their bioactive derivatives in order to assess their use in the development of potential drugs.
