Abstract
Hypercholesterolemia is the main cardiovascular (CV) risk factor with a large body of evidence. Our aim was to assess the achievement of the main therapeutic goal of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with a very high CV risk and a high-dose statin therapy. The study group consisted of 1413 consecutive patients hospitalised at the Upper-Silesian Medical Centre in Katowice due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated with atorvastatin ≥ 40 mg or rosuvastatin ≥ 20 mg. The lipid profile was performed on admission and within 12 months after AMI. The main therapeutic goal was defined as LDL-C < 55 mg%. The study group (n = 1413) included 979 males (69.3%) with arterial hypertension (83.3%), diabetes (33.5%), peripheral artery disease (13.6%) and nicotinism (46.2%). In the study group, only 61 patients (4.3%) were additionally taking ezetimibe. During hospitalisation, the primary LDL-C goal was found in only 186 patients (13.2%). Subsequently, a follow-up lipidogram within 12 months was performed in 652 patients (46%), and the therapeutic goal was achieved in 255 patients (39%). There were 258 (18.26%) patients who died within 12 months after myocardial infarction. The lowest mortality rate was found in the subgroup of patients with LDL-C < 55 mg% during follow-up (11.02%). The primary lipid goal attainment among patients with a high-dose statin and a very high CV risk is low and far from the expected rate. Patients hospitalised for AMI should be given a combination of statin and ezetimibe more frequently. Low LDL-C levels measured at follow-up predict a lower risk of death at 12-month follow-up in a large group of patients.

Abstract
Sumatriptan is an organic chemical compound from the tryptamine group. It is used as a medicine for migraine attacks and in the treatment of cluster headaches. In this work, a new voltammetric method is proposed for highly sensitive SUM determination, using glassy carbon electrodes modified with carbon black and titanium dioxide suspension. The novelty of the presented work is the usage of the mixture of carbon black and TiO2 as glassy carbon electrode modifier for the first time for SUM determination. The mentioned sensor was characterized by great repeatability and sensitivity of measurements, which resulted in the obtention of a wide range of linearity and a low detection limit. The electrochemical properties of the CB-TiO2/GC sensor was characterized using the LSV and EIS method. The effect of different factors on the SUM peak, such as supporting electrolyte type, preconcentration time and potential, or influence of interferents, were tested using the square wave voltammetry technique. The linear voltammetric response for the analyte was obtained in the concentration range of 5 nmol L-1 to 150 μmol L-1 with a detection limit of 2.9 nmol L-1 for a preconcentration time of 150 s in the 0.1 mol L-1 phosphate buffer pH 6.0. The proposed method was successfully applied for highly sensitive sumatriptan determination in complex matrices, such as tablets, urine, and plasma, with a good recovery parameter (94-105%). The presented CB-TiO2/GC electrode is characterized by great stability, it was used for 6 weeks without significant changes in the SUM peak current. Amperometric and voltammetric measurements of SUM under the flow injection conditions were also performed to indicate the possibility of its fast and accurate determination with a time of single analysis of approx. 30 s.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: It is well established that patients with cognitive impairment are at a higher risk of falls. However, the impact of coexisting neuropsychiatric symptoms on the overall risk of falls in hospitalized geriatric individuals with and without dementia has not been extensively studied. This cross-sectional study will assess the association between neuropsychiatric symptoms and fall risk in geriatric individuals analyzed by sex. Materials and Methods: A total of 234 patients, both with and without dementia, admitted to the geriatric ward at Leszek Giec Upper-Silesian Medical Centre of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice, Poland, between January 2019 and January 2020 were included in this study. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Questionnaire was used to assess the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Increased fall risk was defined by Berg scores of ≤40. Results: The mean age of the study group was 80.7 ± 6.6, and women accounted for 62.8% of the study population. Apathy was the most common neuropsychiatric symptom, affecting 58.1% of patients, and it was the most common symptom among people with dementia, affecting 67.80% of patients. The receiver operating characteristics curve analysis revealed that a high fall risk was significantly associated with the total number of neuropsychiatric symptoms (≥4) and the total intensity of these symptoms (≥6). For women, high fall risk was associated with three or more neuropsychiatric symptoms and a total neuropsychiatric symptom intensity score of at least 6. For men, the association of high fall risk with the total number of NPS was not significant; a total NPS intensity score of 10 or more was associated with high fall risk. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified associations with fall risk for hallucinations. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms, particularly hallucinations is associated with an increased risk of falls in geriatric inpatients. In addition, the cumulative total of NPS and their cumulative intensity are both independently associated with an increased risk of falls. These results suggest that fall prevention strategies should include the management of neuropsychiatric symptoms in hospitalized geriatric individuals.

Abstract
The main purpose of this article is to present the latest research related to selected biological properties of carvacrol, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity. As a monoterpenoid phenol, carvacrol is a component of many essential oils and is usually found in plants together with its isomer, thymol. Carvacrol, either alone or in combination with other compounds, has a strong antimicrobial effect on many different strains of bacteria and fungi that are dangerous to humans or can cause significant losses in the economy. Carvacrol also exerts strong anti-inflammatory properties by preventing the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids by inducing SOD, GPx, GR, and CAT, as well as reducing the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the body. It also affects the body's immune response generated by LPS. Carvacrol is considered a safe compound despite the limited amount of data on its metabolism in humans. This review also discusses the biotransformations of carvacrol, because the knowledge of the possible degradation pathways of this compound may help to minimize the risk of environmental contamination with phenolic compounds.

Abstract
DiGeorge syndrome is associated with microdeletion of chromosome 22q11. Hypoplasia of the thymus, hypoparathyroidism, facial malformations and cardiac defects as well as learning difficulties are typical features of the disease. On the other hand hypocalcemia related to hypoparathyroidism is not present in every patient and can develop later and be persistent or transient and is often masked by the other signs or symptoms. We described a 13-year-old boy diagnosed with DiGeorge syndrome, after a few years of nonspecific signs and symptoms, and a microarray examination performed because myopathy was suspected on the basis of elevated creatine kinase activity. Only after molecular confirmation of DiGeorge syndrome the patient was referred to a pediatric endocrinologist and proper therapy started. Looking back to his medical history, low calcium levels were at least 2 times reported in the medical records, the child had learning difficulties, speech disturbances, and submucosal cleft palate suspicion. In conclusion it is important to educate general practitioners and pediatricians to check the serum calcium levels in patients presenting with nonspecific, muscular signs and symptoms.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present recent studies on the antimicrobial properties of linalool, the mechanism of action on cells and detoxification processes. The current trend of employing compounds present in essential oils to support antibiotic therapy is becoming increasingly popular. Naturally occurring monoterpene constituents of essential oils are undergoing detailed studies to understand their detailed effects on the human body, both independently and in doses correlated with currently used pharmaceuticals. One such compound is linalool, which is commonly found in many herbs and is used to flavor black tea. This compound is an excellent fragrance additive for cosmetics, enhancing the preservative effect of the formulations used in them or acting as an anti-inflammatory on mild skin lesions. Previous studies have shown that it is extremely important due to its broad spectrum of biological activities, i.e., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, cardioprotective and antimicrobial. Among opportunistic hospital strains, it is most active against Gram-negative bacteria. The mechanism of action of linalool against microorganisms is still under intensive investigation. One of the key aspects of linalool research is biotransformation, through which its susceptibility to detoxification processes is determined.

Abstract
BPA is still the subject of extensive research due to its widespread use, despite its significant toxicity resulting not only from its negative impact on the endocrine system but also from disrupting the organism’s oxidative homeostasis. At the molecular level, bisphenol A (BPA) causes an increased production of ROS and hence a change in the redox balance, mitochondrial dysfunction, and modulation of cell signaling pathways. Importantly, these changes accumulate in animals and humans, and BPA toxicity may be aggravated by poor diet, metabolic disorders, and coexisting diseases. Accordingly, approaches using antioxidants to counteract the negative effects of BPA are being considered. The preliminary results that are described in this paper are promising, however, it should be emphasized that further studies are required to determine the optimal dosage and treatment regimen to counteract BPA toxicity. It also seems necessary to have a more holistic approach showing, on the one hand, the influence of BPA on the overall human metabolism and, on the other hand, the influence of antioxidants in doses that are acceptable with the diet on BPA toxicity. This is due in part to the fact that in many cases, the positive effect of antioxidants in in vitro studies is not confirmed by clinical studies. For this reason, further research into the molecular mechanisms of BPA activity is also recommended.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is a significant correlation between elevated LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels sustained from childhood and future vascular disease. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the therapy chosen for children with lipid disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study group consisted of 37 children with increased LDL-C (13 boys) aged 8.99 ±4.03 years. After 6 months of behavioral treatment, study group was divided into G1 (n = 24) which continued non-pharmacological treatment supported by dietary supplements and G2 (n = 13) in which statin (5-10 mg/day) was added to non-pharmacological treatment. Analysis included: BMI Z-score, total cholesterol (TCh), LDL-C, HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) measured at several time points. RESULTS The concentrations of TCh and LDL-C before treatment were significantly higher in G2 than in G1 (p < 0.001). Due to the treatment, these differences were no longer noticeable at the last visit. In G1 and G2 concentrations of TCh and LDL-C were reduced significantly, greater reduction after the treatment in TCh and LDL-C was observed in G2 than in G1. Moreover, in G1 we noticed reduction of TG after treatment (p < 0.05). The BMI Z-score did not change significantly through the treatment in both groups. G1 also showed a significant negative correlation between BMI Z-score and HDL-C before and after treatment (r = -0.57, p = 0.009; r = -0.52, p = 0.02). Same relationship was noticed also in G2 after treatment (r = 0.67, p = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In children with dyslipidemia, regardless of its background, statin therapy is the most effective in lowering LDL-C. However, therapy with lipids-lowering supplements seems to be safe and effective.

Abstract
An analytical procedure regarding the determination of selenium(IV) by anodic stripping voltammetry exploiting the in situ plated bismuth film electrode is described. Since organics are commonly present in untreated natural water samples, the use of Amberlite XAD-7 resin turns out to be quite important to avoid problems such as the adsorption of these compounds on the working electrode. The optimum circumstances for the detection of selenium in water using differential pulse voltammetry techniques were found to be as follows: 0.1 mol L-1 acetic acid, 1.9 × 10-5 mol L-1 Bi(III), 0.1 g Amberlite XAD-7 resin, and successive potentials of -1.6 V for 5 s and -0.4 V for 60 s, during which the in situ formation of the bismuth film on glassy carbon and the accumulation of selenium took place. The current of the anodic peak varies linearly with the selenium concentration ranging from 3 × 10-9 mol L-1 to 3 × 10-6 mol L-1 (r = 0.9995), with a detection limit of 8 × 10-10 mol L-1. The proposed procedure was used for Se(IV) determination in certified reference materials and natural water samples, and acceptable results and recoveries were obtained.

Abstract
The main objective of this article was to present the possibilities of using the enzymatic system of microorganisms and insects to transform small molecules, such as monoterpenes. The most important advantage of this type of reaction is the possibility of obtaining derivatives that are not possible to obtain with standard methods of organic synthesis or are very expensive to obtain. The interest of industrial centers focuses mainly on obtaining particles of high optical purity, which have the desired biological properties. The cost of obtaining such a compound and the elimination of toxic or undesirable chemical waste is important. Enzymatic reactions based on enzymes alone or whole microorganisms enable obtaining products with a specific structure and purity in accordance with the rules of Green Chemistry.

Abstract
Geraniol is a monoterpenic alcohol with a pleasant rose-like aroma, known as an important ingredient in many essential oils, and is used commercially as a fragrance compound in cosmetic and household products. However, geraniol has a number of biological activities, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have shown the activity of geraniol against prostate, bowel, liver, kidney and skin cancer. It can induce apoptosis and increase the expression of proapoptotic proteins. The synergy of this with other drugs may further increase the range of chemotherapeutic agents. The antibacterial activity of this compound was also observed on respiratory pathogens, skin and food-derived strains. This review discusses some of the most important uses of geraniol.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma is a rare non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, occurring mostly in the elderly. It develops slowly and leads to malignant proliferation of lymphoid line cells in the bone marrow, lymph nodes and spleen. It may also affect nerve roots and meninges; some patients develop sensorimotor polyneuropathy which may precede general symptoms of lymphoma.
CASE SUMMARY We present a case of a 36-year-old man diagnosed in 2012 with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), then he was hospitalized in 2019 due to progressive symptoms of heart failure and significant weight loss over the previous four months. Based on clinical and laboratory findings a diagnosis of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma was suspected and confirmed by bone marrow flow cytometry. There was no improvement in the results of laboratory tests and the patient's condition after immediate implementation of chemotherapy. Patient died on the fifth day of treatment.
CONCLUSION While CIDP and malignant disease co-occurrence is rare, it should be suspected and investigated in patients with atypical neuropathy symptoms.

Abstract
Halolactones are used both in chemical synthesis as intermediates as well as in various industries. These compounds may be secondary metabolites of living organisms, although they are mainly obtained by chemical synthesis. The substrates for the synthesis of chloro-, bromo- and iodolactones are often unsaturated carboxylic acids, and sometimes they are unsaturated esters. The article presents a number of different methods for the production of halolactones, both racemic mixtures and enantiomerically enriched compounds.

Abstract
The main purpose of this publication was to obtain the S-enantiomer of indan-1-ol with high enantiomeric excess and satisfactory yield. In our research, we used carrot callus cultures (Daucus carota L.), whereby the enzymatic system reduced indan-1-one and oxidized indan-1-ol. During the reaction of reduction, after five days, we received over 50% conversion, with the enantiomeric excess of the formed S-alcohol above 99%. In turn, during the oxidation of racemic indan-1-ol after 15 days, 36.7% of alcohol with an enantiomeric excess 57.4% S(+) remained in the reaction mixture. In addition, our research confirmed that the reactions of reduction and oxidation are competing reactions during the transformation of indan-1-ol and indan-1-one in carrot callus cultures.

Abstract
Pharmacotherapy using natural substances can be currently regarded as a very promising future alternative to conventional therapy of diabetes mellitus, especially in the case of chronic disease when the body is no longer able to produce adequate insulin or when it cannot use the produced insulin effectively. This minireview summarizes the perspectives, recent advances, and major challenges of medicinal mushrooms from Ganoderma genus with reference to their antidiabetic activity. The most active ingredients of those mushrooms are polysaccharides and triterpenoids. We hope this review can offer some theoretical basis and inspiration for the mechanism study of the bioactivity of those compounds.

Abstract
Herbs and the essential oils derived from them have been used from the beginning of human history for different purposes. Their beneficial properties have been applied to mask unpleasant odors, attract the attention of other people, add flavor and aroma properties to prepared dishes, perfumes, and cosmetics, etc. Herbs and essential oils (EOs) have also been used in medicine because of their biological properties, such as larvicidal action, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant, fungicide, and antitumor activities, and many more. Many EOs exhibit antimicrobial properties, which is extremely important in fields of science and industry, such as medicine, agriculture, or cosmetology. Among the 250 EOs which are commercially available, about a dozen possess high antimicrobial potential. According to available papers and patents, EOs seem to be a potential alternative to synthetic compounds, especially because of the resistance that has been increasingly developed by pathogenic microorganisms. In this review we summarize the latest research studies about the most-active EOs that are known and used because of their antimicrobial properties. Finally, it is noteworthy that the antimicrobial activities of EOs are not preeminent for all strains. Further investigations should, thus, focus on targeting EOs and microorganisms.

Abstract
The aim of this article is influence of the structure of lactones with the methylcyclohexene and dimethylcyclohexene ring on their biotransformation and antimicrobial activity. This work was based on the general remark that even the smallest change in the structure of a compound can affect its biological properties. The results of the biotransformation of four bicyclic unsaturated lactones with one or two methyl groups in the cyclohexene ring was tested using fifteen fungal strains (Fusarium species, Penicillium species, Absidia species, Cunninghamella japonica, and Pleurotus ostreatus) and five yeast strains (Yarrowia lipolytica, Rhodorula marina, Rhodorula rubra, Candida viswanathii, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae). During these transformations, new epoxylactone and hydroxylactone were obtained. The relationship between the substrate structure and the ability of the microorganisms to transform them were analysed. Only compounds with C-O bond of lactone ring in the equatorial position were transformed by fungus. All presented here lactones were examined also for their antimicrobial activity. It turned out that these compounds exhibited growth inhibition of bacteria and fungi, mainly Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Penicillium expansum.

Abstract
The aim of this study was the chemical synthesis of a series of halo- and unsaturated lactones, as well as their microbial transformation products. Finally some of their biological activities were assessed. Three bicyclic halolactones with a methyl group in the cyclohexane ring were obtained from the corresponding γ,δ-unsaturated ester during a two-step synthesis. These lactones were subjected to screening biotransformation using twenty two fungal strains. These strains were tested on their ability to transform halolactones into new hydroxylactones. Among the six strains able to catalyze hydrolytic dehalogenation, only two (Fusarium equiseti, AM22 and Yarrowia lipolytica, AM71) gave a product in a high yield. Moreover, one strain (Penicillium wermiculatum, AM30) introduced the hydroxy group on the cyclohexane ring without removing the halogen atom. The biological activity of five of the obtained lactones was tested. Some of these compounds exhibited growth inhibition against bacteria, yeasts and fungi and deterrent activity against peach-potato aphid.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to obtain new compounds during biotransformation of two halocompounds, the δ-bromo and δ-iodo-γ-bicyclolactones 1 and 2. Unexpectedly Pleurotus ostreatus produced together with the hydroxylactone, 2-hydroxy-4,4-dimethyl-9-oxabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane-8-one (3), its own metabolite (3S,9S,15S)-(6E,12E)-3,9,15-trimethyl-4,10,16-trioxacyclohexa-deca-6,12-diene-1,5,8,11,14-pentaone (4). The method presented here, in which this macrosphelide 4 was obtained by biotransformation, has not been previously described in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, this compound has been prepared only by chemical synthesis to date. This is the first report on the possibility of the biosynthesis of this compound by the Pleurotus ostreatus strain. The conditions and factors, like temperature, salts, organic solvents, affecting the production of this macrosphelide by Pleurotus ostreatus strain were examined. The highest yield of macroshphelide production was noticed for halolactones, as well with iodide, bromide, iron and copper (2+) ions as inductors.

Abstract
The searching for biologically active compounds produced by living organisms led to the discovery of a number of compounds with more or less complicated structure. One of the simplest molecules are monoterpenoid lactones and loliolide is the most common among them. Loliolide was found in animals (insects) and plants (flowers, shrubs, trees) both terrestrial and marine, such as algae and corals. Many years of research on plants used in traditional folk medicine of different countries have led to the conclusion that this compound has a variety of biological properties such as anti-cancer, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant ones. Moreover, plants containing loliolide are used in alternative medicine in treatment of diabetes and depression. It is extremely interesting that this lactone also affects the behavior of ants as well as the development of certain plants (allelopathic activity). However, sometimes there are side effects as in the case of structural analogues of loliolide contributing to extinction of tropical coral.

Abstract
Eight new lactones (δ-chloro-, δ-bromo- and δ-iodo-γ-lactones), each with a methylcyclohexane ring, were obtained by chemical means from (4-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-yl) acetic acid or (6-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-yl) acetic acid. Whole cells of ten fungal strains (Fusarium species, Syncephalastrum racemosum and Botrytis cinerea) were tested on their ability to convert these lactones into other products. Some of the tested fungal strains transformed chloro-, bromo- and iodolactone with a methyl group at C-5 into 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-9-oxabicyclo[4.3.0]nonan-8-one during hydrolytic dehalogenation. When the same lactones had the methyl group at C-3, no structural modifications of halolactones were observed. In most cases, the optical purity of the product was low or medium, with the highest rate for chlorolactone (45.4%) and iodolactone (45.2% and 47.6%). All of the obtained compounds were tested with reference to their smell. Seven halolactones and the hydroxylactone obtained via biotransformation of halolactones with 5-methylcyclohexane ring were examined for their antimicrobial activity. These compounds were capable of inhibiting growth of some bacteria, yeasts and fungi.

Abstract
Immunoglobulin preparations are one of the products of the human plasma fractionation, where the plasma is obtained, in accordance with WHO guidelines from at least 1,000 donors. These preparations contain all IgG subclasses with various antigen characteristics. In clinical practice these drugs are used as replacement therapy in patients with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies as well as immunomodulatory therapy in many autoimmune diseases and systemic inflammatory diseases. Here we present characteristics of i.v. polyvalent, human immunoglobulin preparations available on the Polish market and the possibilities of their use in clinical practice, in children with hematological diseases. Considering the very low consumption of immunoglobulin preparations in our country as compared to other European countries, we would like to draw the attention of medical professionals, especially pediatricians and haematologists, to the benefits that stem from the use of these drugs in the therapy of children with haematological diseases. Our work will also facilitate the choice of an optimal polyvalent human immunoglobulin preparation for a particular patient.

Abstract
Enantioselective reduction of the carbonyl group of three phenylglyoxylic acid esters (methyl, ethyl, and n-propyl esters, 2-4) was conducted using blended plant materials (roots of carrot, beetroot, celeriac and parsley; apple). All used biocatalysts transformed these esters to the corresponding mandelic acid esters with high yield, preferably into the respective R-enantiomer. Butanedione addition improved the enantioselectivity of the reaction.

Abstract
Oximes of isoxanthohumol (IXN), naringenin (N) and flavanone (FL) were synthesized with yields of 88-95% and their antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) method. Although naringenin oxime (NOX) and flavanone oxime (FLOX) did not have any significant antioxidant effect (EC50=2.21 mM and 78.7 mM, respectively), isoxanthohumol oxime (IXNOX) showed a strong antioxidant activity (EC50=0.0411 mM), comparable to the activity of ascorbic acid (EC50=0.0181 mM). The structure of new compound IXNOX was established using (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, by comparison to IXN, NOX and FLOX.

Abstract
The voltammetric procedure for determination of traces of Cr(VI) [ Anal. Chim. Acta (1992) 262:103] was modified by changing the temperature of the measurements. It was found that at the temperature of 40 degrees C the time of decrease of the Cr(III) signal was shortened from 30 to 5 min. As a result the total analysis time was drastically shortened. The modified procedure does not show any disadvantage as compared to the original method. The results of Cr(VI) determination by the modified procedure are less affected by Cr(III) as compared to the original method. The detection limit of the method was 2.5 x 10(-11) mol L(-1) (1.2 ng L(-1)). The validation of the modified procedure was performed by comparison of the results of analyses of tap and river water samples with those obtained using original procedure.

Abstract
Vitamin E was used as a protection for human lymphocytes in vitro against the toxic effects of dichlorvos, an organic phosphate pesticide. As the markers of the toxic changes in the lymphocytes lysosomes were chosen as a membrane structure, and nucleoli as a structure connected with protein synthesis. The obtained results were compared with the effects obtained previously in analogous studies after intoxication of lymphocytes with lindan and fenarimol. The experiment showed that vitamin E protected the lysosomal membranes more effectively than the nucleolar structure in these cells.

Abstract
Vitamin E (15 micrograms/ml and 60 micrograms/ml) was used for protection of human leucocytes against toxic effects of lindan (150 microM and 200 microM) in vitro. The protective effect of vitamin E manifested itself as maintenance of the phagocytic activity of granulocytes, the value of nucleologram in lymphocytes, and the proportion of euchrysin-negative lymphocytes near the values in controls.

Abstract
Following lindane intoxication in daily doses of 0.1 LD50 during one month (total dose 2.0 LD50) functional changes were noted in granulocytes and structural changes in lymphocytes in peripheral blood of rabbits during 4 months after completion of lindane administration. A significant decrease of the phagocytic activity with a rise in the number of non-phagocytizing granulocytes, quantitative and qualitative changes of nucleoli and lysosomes were found in lymphocytes. The latest effect of lindane is regarded to be a raised number of non-phagocytizing granulocytes 4 months after withdrawal of the pesticide.

A significant increase in the number of echinocytes, a greater per cent of reticulocytes, significantly raised level of denatured haemoglobin, and an increased number of erythrocytes of higher sensitivity to oxidating factors in relation to control group was observed.

Abstract
The effect of fenarimol in blood cells and changes in liver and kidneys in rats were investigated. Fenarimol applied in doses 25 mg/ml intragastrically during 5 days, at 24h after the last doses caused functional and structural changes of blood cells and organs. The decreases of osmotic fragility of erythrocytes and phagocytic activity of neutrophils, and the increase of the percentage of lymphocytes without detectable lysosomes accompanied by the minor decrease of the number of blood cells was observed in the peripheral blood. The indistinctness of the structure of the hepatic lobules and of liver laminae and the vacuolized hepatic cells with pycnotic nuclei were visible in the liver. The abnormally enlarged cortical Malphighian++ glomeruli in kidney were found. The observed changes indicate the cytotoxic effect of fenarimol in strongly intoxicated rats. The impaired phagocytic activity of neutrophils may cause the growth of susceptibility to bacterial infection.
