Abstract
N-heterocyclic imines such as pyridylidene amines impart high catalytic activity when coordinated to a transition metal, largely imposed by their electronic flexibility. Here, this donor flexibility has been applied for the first time to CAAC-based systems through the synthesis of CAAC-triazenes. These new ligands offer a larger π-conjugation that extends from the N-heterocyclic carbene through three nitrogens rather than just one, as observed in N-heterocyclic imines. We demonstrate the straightforward synthesis of three new CAAC-triazenes containing different substituents on the terminal triazene nitrogen. These compounds are remarkably stable up to 120 °C without loss of N2 as typically observed with similar triazenes. E-to-Z isomerization within the triazene is instigated by UV light and is partially reversible dependent on the triazene substituent. The quinoline-substituted CAAC-triazene 1-Q has been applied as an L,L'-type ligand in the synthesis of [PdCl2(1-Q)], [PdCl(Me)(1-Q)] and [Pd(Me)(H2O(1-Q)]+. E-to-Z ligand isomerization also occurs when coordinated to PdCl2, providing access to on-metal manipulation. The cationic complex [PdMe(H2O)(1-Q)]+ is a precatalyst for oligomerization of ethylene to form initially 2-butene and subsequently linear and branched C8-C12 products from butene activation. Moreover, isomerization of 1-hexene takes place efficiently with exceptionally low catalyst loading (10 ppm) and up to 74,000 turnover numbers.

Abstract
Hyperbranched ethylene oligomers and polar functionalized co-oligomers synthesized via ethylene chain walking (co) oligomerization is a very attractive strategy. In this study, a series of dibenzhydryl iminopyridyl ligands with benzocycloalkyl and naphthyl moieties and the corresponding Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. The Ni(II) complexes were highly effective in ethylene oligomerization and ethylene oligomers with hyperbranched microstructures were generated from this system. The corresponding Pd(II) complexes showed moderate oligomerization activities in ethylene oligomerization and hyperbranched ethylene oligomers were also yielded from the system. More significantly, the Pd(II) complexes can also effectively promote the co-oligomerization of ethylene with methyl acrylate (MA) to obtain hyperbranched polar functionalized ethylene-MA co-oligomers. The reaction temperature, catalyst ligand structure and metal type all have significant effects on ethylene (co) oligomerization with respect to catalytic activity, molecular weight and topology of the oligomers.

Abstract
Chain-end functionalized polymers play an important role in the field of building complex macromolecular structures. In this study, we have synthesized and characterized four dibenzhydryl iminopyridine Ni(II) complexes bearing remote flexible substituents (Et and n-Bu) to provide hyperbranched ethylene oligomers in ethylene oligomerization with moderate to good activities. Most notably, toluene-end-functionalized hyperbranched ethylene oligomers were obtained under elevated temperature conditions and validated by NMR. The tandem catalysis of ethylene oligomerization and the subsequent Friedel–Crafts addition of the resulting unsaturated products to toluene molecules was proposed as the cause of the observed phenomenon.

Abstract
Low-molecular-weight (MW) ethylene oligomers with hyperbranched microstructures are often difficult to be synthesized by traditional catalytic processes. In this study, a series of N-terphenyl iminopyridyl ligands and the corresponding Pd(II) and Ni(II) complexes bearing remote conjugated substituents with different electronic effects (H, Me, F, Cl, and tBu) were synthesized in a simple and efficient way. These Pd(II) and Ni(II) complexes were highly effective in the ethylene oligomerization and co-oligomerization with methyl acrylate (MA). Low-MW ethylene oligomers with hyperbranched microstructures were generated using the iminopyridyl Pd(II) and Ni(II) complexes in ethylene oligomerization. More importantly, polar functionalized ethylene-MA co-oligomers with low MWs and varying incorporation ratios were generated via ethylene and MA co-oligomerization using the Pd(II) complexes. Most notably, these ethylene oligomers obtained by different metal species showed a significant difference in microscopic chain architectures. The remote conjugated electron effect showed little effect on the polymerization parameters of the iminopyridyl system, which is very different from those of the salicylaldiminato system.

Abstract
The efficient copolymerisation of functionalised olefins with alkenes continues to offer considerable challenges to catalyst design. Based on recent work using palladium complexes containing a dissymmetric N^N'-bidentate pyridyl-PYA ligand (PYA = pyridylidene amide), which showed a high propensity to insert methyl acrylate, we have here modified this catalyst structure by inserting shielding groups either into the pyridyl fragment, or the PYA unit, or both to avoid fast β-hydrogen elimination. While a phenyl substituent at the pyridyl side impedes catalytic activity completely and leads to an off-cycle cyclometallation, the introduction of an ortho-methyl group on the PYA side of the N^N'-ligand was more prolific and doubled the catalytic productivity. Mechanistic investigations with this ligand system indicated the stabilisation of a 4-membered metallacycle intermediate at room temperature, which has previously been postulated and detected only at 173 K, but never observed at ambient temperature so far. This intermediate was characterised by solution NMR spectroscopy and rationalises, in part, the formation of α,β-unsaturated esters under catalytic conditions, thus providing useful principles for optimised catalyst design.

Concerted steric and electronic effects on α-diimine nickel- and palladium-catalyzed ethylene polymerization and copolymerization. Sci Bull (Beijing) 2020; 65:300-307. [PMID: 36659095 DOI: 10.1016/j.scib.2019.11.019] [Citation(s) in RCA: 96] [Impact Index Per Article: 24.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/14/2019] [Revised: 11/13/2019] [Accepted: 11/14/2019] [Indexed: 01/21/2023]
Abstract
For transition metal-based olefin polymerization catalysts, ligand steric and electronic effects can strongly influence important catalytic properties. However, the simultaneous tuning of both steric and electronic effects has not been explored in most of the previous studies. In this contribution, a strategy to tune the ligand electronic and steric effects in a concerted fashion is reported. In such a system, both dibenzhydryl groups and multiple methoxy/fluoro groups were installed in α-diimine ligands. In addition to strongly influencing ligand electronics, the methoxy/fluoro groups can interact with the dibenzhydryl groups and efficiently increase ligand sterics. In ethylene polymerization, this concurrent tuning of electronic and steric effects can lead to simultaneous enhancement of several parameters (activity, stability, polymer molecular weight, melting point, branching density) for both the nickel and palladium catalysts. The effectiveness of this strategy is highly attractive for future studies in other catalytic systems.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a novel 6,13-dihydro-6,13-ethanopentacene-15,16-diimine palladium(II) complex are described. The effect of the backbone framework of the α-diimine metal catalyst on the polymerization reaction of norbornene and 1-octene is investigated. Compared to the 9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11,12-diimine palladium(II) complex (C1), the 6,13-dihydro-6,13-ethanopentacene-15,16-diimine palladium(II) complex (C2) with a polycyclic aromatic system on the backbone exhibits relatively high activities and leads to high molecular weights as well as narrow molecular weight distributions depending on the variation in feed ratios for copolymerization of norbornene and 1-octene. Moreover, the copolymers obtained using the 6,13-dihydro-6,13-ethanopentacene-15,16-diimine palladium(II) complex (C2) with large steric hindrance show high thermal stability and high glass transition temperatures.

Abstract
Ar-BIANH2 bearing different substituents on the aryl rings have been synthesized in high yield by reduction of the corresponding bis(aryl)acenaphthenequinonediimine (Ar-BIAN) compounds. The structure of p-CH3 C6 H4 -BIANH2 in the solid state was determined by X-ray diffraction. An exhaustive voltammetric investigation of the two parallel BIAN and BIANH2 series afforded a first rationalization of the redox properties of these molecules, highlighting their analogies with quinone/hydroquinone systems. Such analogies, in combination with the much more negative reduction potential range of Ar-BIAN compounds with respect to quinones, can afford to extend the range of reduction potentials so far obtainable by the use of quinones.
