Aerobic Oxygenation of Alkylarenes over Ultrafine Transition-Metal-Containing Manganese-Based Oxides

Oxygen-Free Csp3-H Oxidation of Pyridin-2-yl-methanes to Pyridin-2-yl-methanones with Water by Copper Catalysis

Aromatic ketones are important pharmaceutical intermediates, especially the pyridin-2-yl-methanone motifs. Thus, synthetic methods for these compounds have gained extensive attention in the last few years. Transition metals catalyze the oxidation of Csp3-H for the synthesis of aromatic ketones, which is arresting. Here, we describe an efficient copper-catalyzed synthesis of pyridin-2-yl-methanones from pyridin-2-yl-methanes through a direct Csp3-H oxidation approach with water under mild conditions. Pyridin-2-yl-methanes with aromatic rings, such as substituted benzene, thiophene, thiazole, pyridine, and triazine, undergo the reaction well to obtain the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. Several controlled experiments are operated for the mechanism exploration, indicating that water participates in the oxidation process, and it is the single oxygen source in this transformation. The current work provides new insights for water-involving oxidation reactions.

Ultraporous, Ultrasmall MgMn2O4 Spinel Cathode for a Room-Temperature Magnesium Rechargeable Battery

Magnesium rechargeable batteries (MRBs) promise to be the next post lithium-ion batteries that can help meet the increasing demand for high-energy, cost-effective, high-safety energy storage devices. Early prototype MRBs that use molybdenum-sulfide cathodes have low terminal voltages, requiring the development of oxide-based cathodes capable of overcoming the sulfide's low Mg2+ conductivity. Here, we fabricate an ultraporous (>500 m2 g-1) and ultrasmall (<2.5 nm) cubic spinel MgMn2O4 (MMO) by a freeze-dry assisted room-temperature alcohol reduction process. While the as-fabricated MMO exhibits a discharge capacity of 160 mAh g-1, the removal of its surface hydroxy groups by heat-treatment activates it without structural change, improving its discharge capacity to 270 mAh g-1─the theoretical capacity at room temperature. These results are made possible by the ultraporous, ultrasmall particles that stabilize the metastable cubic spinel phase, promoting both the Mg2+ insertion/deintercalation in the MMO and the reversible transformation between the cubic spinel and cubic rock-salt phases.

Base-Assisted Aerobic C-H Oxidation of Alkylarenes with a Murdochite-Type Oxide Mg6MnO8 Nanoparticle Catalyst

Heterogeneously catalyzed aerobic oxidative C-H functionalization under mild conditions is a chemical process to obtain desired oxygenated products directly. Nanosized murdochite-type oxide Mg₆MnO₈ (Mg₆MnO₈-MA) was successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method using malic acid. The specific surface area reached up to 104 m² g^-1, which is about 7 times higher than those (2-15 m² g^-1) of Mg₆MnO₈ synthesized by previously reported methods. Mg₆MnO₈-MA exhibited superior catalytic performance to those of other Mn- and Mg-based oxides, including manganese oxides with Mn-O-Mn active sites for the oxidation of fluorene with molecular oxygen (O₂) as the sole oxidant under mild conditions (40 °C). The present catalytic system was applicable to the aerobic oxidation of various substrates. The catalyst could be recovered by simple filtration and reused several times without obvious loss of its high catalytic performance. The correlation between the reactivity and the pK_a of the substrates, basic properties of catalysts, and kinetic isotope effects suggest a basicity-controlled mechanism of hydrogen atom transfer. The ¹⁸O-labeling experiments, kinetics, and mechanistic studies showed that H abstraction of the hydrocarbon proceeds via a mechanism involving O₂ activation. The structure of Mg₆MnO₈ consisting of isolated Mn⁴⁺ species located in a basic MgO matrix plays an important role in the present oxidation.

Nanostructured Manganese Oxides within a Ring-Shaped Polyoxometalate Exhibiting Unusual Oxidation Catalysis

Nanosized manganese oxides have recently received considerable attention for their synthesis, structures, and potential applications. Although various synthetic methods have been developed, precise synthesis of novel nanostructured manganese oxides are still challenging. In this study, using a structurally defined nanosized cavity inside a ring-shaped polyoxometalate, we succeeded in synthesizing two types of discrete 18 and 20 nuclear nanostructured manganese oxides, Mn18 and Mn20, respectively. In particular, Mn18 showed much higher catalytic activity than other manganese oxides for the oxygenation of alkylarenes including electron-deficient ones, and the reaction proceeded through a unique reaction mechanism due to its unusual manganese oxide structure.

Aerobic oxygenation of α-methylene ketones under visible-light catalysed by a CeNi3 complex with a macrocyclic tris(salen)-ligand

A hetero-tetranuclear CeNi₃ complex with a macrocyclic ligand catalysed the aerobic oxygenation of a methylene group adjacent to a carbonyl group under visible-light radiation to produce the corresponding α-diketones. The visible-light induced homolysis of the Ce-O bond of a bis(enolate) intermediate is proposed prior to aerobic oxygenation.

Transition Metal-Catalyzed C-H Oxidation of Saturated Hydrocarbons with Molecular Oxygen

The C-H oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons to the corresponding alcohols and ketones can be performed efficiently at room temperature with molecular oxygen (1 atm) in the presence of acetaldehyde and catalysts such as Fe, Cu(OH)₂ , and CuCl₂ -18-crown-6 complex. Moreover, extremely high turnover numbers (>27,000) have been obtained for the C-H oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons with molecular oxygen (1 atm) using a combination of Cu(OAc)₂ and acetonitrile at 70 °C. Related oxidation reactions such as epoxidation, Baeyer-Villiger reaction, acetoxylation of β-lactams with molecular oxygen and a suitable aldehyde at room temperature are described.

Precious Metal-Free LaMnO3 Perovskite Catalyst with an Optimized Nanostructure for Aerobic C-H Bond Activation Reactions: Alkylarene Oxidation and Naphthol Dimerization

In this article, we describe the development of a new aerobic C-H oxidation methodology catalyzed by a precious metal-free LaMnO₃ perovskite catalyst. Molecular oxygen is used as the sole oxidant in this approach, obviating the need for other expensive and/or environmentally hazardous stoichiometric oxidants. The electronic and structural properties of the LaMnO₃ catalysts were systematically optimized, and a reductive pretreatment protocol was proved to be essential for acquiring the observed high catalytic activities. It is demonstrated that this newly developed method was extremely effective for the oxidation of alkylarenes to ketones as well as for the oxidative dimerization of 2-naphthol to 1,1-binaphthyl-2,2-diol (BINOL), a particularly important scaffold for asymmetric catalysis. Detailed spectroscopic and mechanistic studies provided valuable insights into the structural aspects of the active catalyst and the reaction mechanism.

Rapid room-temperature synthesis of ultrasmall cubic Mg–Mn spinel cathode materials for rechargeable Mg-ion batteries

Reducing the particle size of cathode materials is effective to improve the rate capability of Mg-ion batteries. In this study, ultrasmall cubic Mg–Mn spinel oxide nanoparticles approximately 5 nm in size were successfully synthesized via an alcohol reduction process within 30 min at room temperature. Though the particles aggregated to form large secondary particles, the aggregation could be suppressed by covering the particles with graphene. The composite exhibited a specific capacity of 230 mA h g⁻¹, and could be cycled more than 100 times without any large capacity loss even at a moderate current density with the Mg(ClO₄)₂/CH₃CN electrolyte.

An ultrasmall cubic Mg–Mn spinel obtained by an alcohol reduction process is demonstrated as a cathode candidate for rechargeable Mg-ion batteries.

Aerobic conversion of benzylic sp3 C–H in diphenylmethanes and benzyl ethers to CO bonds under catalyst-, additive- and light-free conditions

Catalyst-, additive- and light-free aerobic conversion of benzylic C–H to CO bonds is, for the first time, reported.
