Abstract
ConspectusZinc oxide (ZnO) is a multipurpose material and finds its applications in various fields such as rubber manufacturing, medicine, food additives, electronics, etc. It has also been intensively studied in photocatalysis due to its wide band gap and environmental compatibility. Recently, heterogeneous catalysts with supported ZnOx species have attracted more and more attention for the dehydrogenation of propane (PDH) and isobutane (iBDH) present in shale/natural gas. The olefins formed in these reactions are key building blocks of the chemical industry. These reactions are also of academic importance for understanding the fundamentals of the selective activation of C-H bonds. Differently structured ZnOx species supported on zeolites, SiO2, and Al2O3 have been reported to be active for nonoxidative dehydrogenation reactions. However, the structure-activity-selectivity relationships for these catalysts remain elusive. The main difficulty stems from the preparation of catalysts containing only one kind of well-defined ZnOx species. In this Account, we describe the studies on PDH and iBDH over differently structured ZnOx species and highlight our approaches to develop catalysts with controllable ZnOx speciation relevant to their performance. Several methods, including (i) the in situ reaction of gas-phase metallic Zn atoms with OH groups on the surface of supports, (ii) one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, and (iii) impregnation/anchoring methods, have been developed/used for the tailored preparation of supported ZnOx species. The first method allows precise control of the molecular structure of ZnOx through the nature of the defective OH groups on the supports. Using this method, a series of ZnOx species ranging from isolated, binuclear to nanosized ZnOx have been successfully generated on different SiO2-based or ZrO2-based supports as demonstrated by complementary ex/in situ characterization techniques. Based on kinetic studies and detailed characterization results, the intrinsic activity (Zn-related turnover frequency) of ZnOx was found to depend on its speciation. It increases with an increasing number of Zn atoms in a ZnmOn cluster from 1 to a few atoms (less than 10) and then decreases strongly for ZnOx nanoparticles. The latter promote the formation of undesired C1-C2 hydrocarbons and coke, resulting in lower propene selectivity in comparison with the catalysts containing only ZnOx species ranging from isolated to subnanometer ZnmOn clusters. In addition, the strategy for improving the thermal stability of ZnOx species and the consequences of mass-transport limitations for DH reactions were also elucidated. The results obtained allowed us to establish the fundamentals for the targeted preparation of well-structured ZnOx species and the relationships between their structures and the DH performance. This knowledge may inspire further studies in the field of C-H bond activation and other reactions, in which ZnOx species act as catalytically active sites or promoters, such as the dehydroaromatization of light alkanes and the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol.

Abstract
Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) with paired active sites can provide unique intrinsic properties for heterogeneous catalysis, but the synergy of the active centers remains to be elucidated. Here, we develop a high-performance DAC with Zn1Co1 species anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon (Zn1Co1/NC) as the dominant active site for the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction. It exhibits several times higher turnover frequency (TOF) of C3H8 conversion and enhanced C3H6 selectivity compared to Zn1/NC or Co1/NC with only a single-atom site. Various experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the enhanced PDH performance stems from the promoted activation of the C-H bond of C3H8 triggered by the electronic interaction between Zn1 and Co1 colligated by N species. Moreover, the dynamic sinking of the Zn1 site and rising of the Co1 site, together with the steric effect of the dissociated H species at the bridged N during the PDH reaction, provides a feasible channel for C3H6 desorption through the more exposed Co1 site, thereby boosting the selectivity. This work provides a promising strategy for designing robust hetero DACs to simultaneously increase activity and selectivity in the PDH reaction.

Abstract
The pure-silica zeolite plays a crucially important role in the gas separation of alkane/alkene, the low-k dielectric material, and the robust matrix for confining metal species during catalysis. However, the environmentally friendly synthesis of pure-silica zeolites is still challenging since (1) the toxic fluoride or dealuminum seeds are inevitably utilized through the hydrothermal synthesis and (2) it will also take a longer crystallization time. Herein, we present an efficient method called the OSDA-mismatch approach for the fluoride- and seed-free synthesis of pure-silica zeolites using Si-SOD (enriched 4-rings) as the sole silica source. This approach allows for the rapid and green synthesis of 15 pure-silica zeolites (CHA, *BEA, EUO, SFF, STF, -SVR, *-SVY, DOH, MTN, NON, *MRE, MEL, MFI, MTW, and *STO). Furthermore, distinct crystallization mechanisms of two significant pure-silica CHA- and *BEA-type zeolites (denoted as Si-CHA and Si-BEA) are investigated in detail by advanced characterization techniques such as FIB, 3D ED, 4D-STEM, HRTEM, Raman, and 29Si MAS NMR. More importantly, Si-CHA displays promising propane/propylene separation performance even better than the one synthesized in the presence of toxic HF. In addition, the incorporation of Zn species within Si-BEA fabricated by this approach also renders superior performance on propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract
Metal-exchanged zeolites are well-known propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts; however, the structure of the active species remains unresolved. In this review, existing PDH catalysts are first surveyed, and then the current understanding of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts is described in detail. The case of Ga/H-ZSM-5 is employed to showcase that advances in the understanding of structure-activity relations are often accompanied by technological or conceptional breakthroughs. The understanding of Ga speciation at PDH conditions has evolved owing to the advent of in situ/operando characterizations and to the realization that the local coordination environment of Ga species afforded by the zeolite support has a decisive impact on the active site structure. In situ/operando quantitative characterization of catalysts, rigorous determination of intrinsic reaction rates, and predictive computational modeling are all significant in identifying the most active structure in these complex systems. The reaction mechanism could be both intricately related to and nearly independent of the details of the assumed active structure, as in the two main proposed PDH mechanisms on Ga/H-ZSM-5, that is, the carbenium mechanism and the alkyl mechanism. Perspectives on potential approaches to further elucidate the active structure of metal-exchanged zeolite catalysts and reaction mechanisms are discussed in the final section.

Abstract
Research results about the influence of BEA zeolite preliminary dealumination on the acid–base characteristics and catalytic performance of 1% Zn-BEA compositions in propane dehydrogenation with CO2 are presented. The catalyst samples, prepared through a two-step post-synthesis procedure involving partial or complete dealumination of the BEA specimen followed by the introduction of Zn2+ cations into the T-positions of the zeolite framework, were characterized using XRD, XPS, MAS NMR, SEM/EDS, low-temperature N2 ad/desorption, C3H8/C3H6 (CO2, NH3)-TPD, TPO-O2, and FTIR-Py techniques. Full dealumination resulted in the development of a mesoporous structure and specific surface area (BET) with a twofold decrease in the total acidity and basicity of Zn-BEA, and the formation of Lewis acid sites and basic sites of predominantly medium strength, as well as the removal of Brønsted acid sites from the surface. In the presence of the ZnSiBEA catalyst, which had the lowest total acidity and basicity, the obtained selectivity of 86–94% and yield of 30–33% for propene (at 923 K) exceeded the values for ZnAlSiBEA and ZnAlBEA. The results of propane dehydrogenation with/without carbon dioxide showed the advantages of producing the target olefin in the presence of CO2 using Zn-BEA catalysts.

Abstract
Zeolites are typically a class of crystalline microporous aluminosilicates that are constructed by SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra. Because of their unique porous structures, strong Brönsted acidity, molecular-level shape selectivity, exchangeable cations, and high thermal/hydrothermal stability, zeolites are widely used as catalysts, adsorbents, and ion-exchangers in industry. The activity, selectivity, and stability/durability of zeolites in applications are closely related to their Si/Al ratios and Al distributions in the framework. In this review, we discussed the basic principles and the state-of-the-art methodologies for regulating the Si/Al ratios and Al distributions of zeolites, including seed-assisted recipe modification, interzeolite transformation, fluoride media, and usage of organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs), etc. The conventional and newly developed characterization methods for determining the Si/Al ratios and Al distributions were summarized, which include X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), solid state 29Si/27Al magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (29Si/27Al MAS NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), etc. The impact of Si/Al ratios and Al distributions on the catalysis, adsorption/separation, and ion-exchange performance of zeolites were subsequently demonstrated. Finally, we presented a perspective on the precise control of the Si/Al ratios and Al distributions of zeolites and the corresponding challenges.

Enhanced Performance and Stability of a Trimetallic CuZnY/SiBEA Catalyst in Ethanol to Butadiene Reaction by Introducing Copper to Optimize Acid/Base Ratio. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
Bioethanol to butadiene is currently the most promising non-oil-based butadiene production route. Here, copper is introduced into the conventional bimetallic zeolite catalyst to partially substitute for zinc; the isolated tetracoordinated Cu(II) species are formed, with weak and strong basic sites transformed into medium acid sites in trimetallic CuZnY/SiBEA catalyst. A partial substitution of zinc by copper increases the dispersion of metal, reduces the formation of ZnO clusters, decreases the pore blockage, and enhances the total pore volume of catalyst. The Cu1Zn2Y5/SiBEA catalyst with an appropriate 0.33 Cu/(Cu + Zn) mass ratio, a highest medium acid sites/(weak + strong) basic sites value of 6.17, and largest total pore volume of 0.251 cm3/g in all samples presents excellent catalytic performance in the ethanol to butadiene reaction: 99.01% ethanol conversion and 73.36% butadiene selectivity, higher than most reported ethanol to butadiene catalysts. The isolated tetracoordinated Cu(II) structure is stable, which is beneficial to the stability of trimetallic catalyst; when the reaction time is 60 h, the butadiene selectivity is 45.95%, 14% higher than corresponding bimetallic catalyst. The butadiene productivity of Cu1Zn2Y5/SiBEA catalyst reaches up to 1.68 gBD·gcat−1·h−1 at WHSV = 6 h−1 and time-on-stream = 8 h. Increasing reaction temperature could linearly increase the ethanol conversion, while the butadiene selectivity increases first and then decreases, the suitable temperature is 375 ℃ for the highest butadiene yield.

Abstract
Atomically dispersed noble metal catalysts have drawn wide attention as candidates to replace supported metal clusters and metal nanoparticles. Atomic dispersion can offer unique chemical properties as well as maximum utilization of the expensive metals. Addition of a second metal has been found to help reduce the size of Pt ensembles in bimetallic clusters; however, the stabilization of isolated Pt atoms in small nests of nonprecious metal atoms remains challenging. We now report a novel strategy for the design, synthesis, and characterization of a zeolite-supported propane dehydrogenation catalyst that incorporates predominantly isolated Pt atoms stably bonded within nests of Zn atoms located within the nanoscale pores of dealuminated zeolite Beta. The catalyst is stable in long-term operation and exhibits high activity and high selectivity to propene. Atomic resolution images, bolstered by X-ray absorption spectra, demonstrate predominantly atomic dispersion of the Pt in the nests and, with complementary infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, determine a structural model of the nested Pt.

Abstract
Currently, zeolites are one of the most important classes of heterogeneous catalysts in chemical industries owing to their unique structural characteristics such as molecular-scale size/shape-selectivity, heterogenized single catalytic sites in the framework, and excellent stability in harsh industrial processes. However, the microporous structure of conventional zeolite materials limits their applications to small-molecule reactions. To alleviate this problem, mesoporous zeolitic frameworks were developed. In the last few decades, several methods have been developed for the synthesis of mesoporous zeolites; these zeolites have demonstrated greater lifetime and better performance than their bulk microporous counterparts in many catalytic processes, which can be explained by the rapid diffusion of reactant species into the zeolite framework and facile accessibility to bulky molecules through the mesopores. Mesoporous zeolites provide versatile opportunities not only in conventional chemical industries but also in emerging catalysis fields. This review presents many state-of-the-art mesoporous zeolites, discusses various strategies for their synthesis, and details their contributions to catalytic reactions including catalytic cracking, isomerization, alkylation and acylation, alternative fuel synthesis via methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) routes, and different fine-chemical syntheses.

Abstract
Zeolites possessing large specific surface areas, ordered micropores, and adjustable acidity/basicity have emerged as ideal supports to immobilize metal species with small sizes and high dispersities. In recent years, the zeolite-supported metal catalysts have been widely used in diverse catalytic processes, showing excellent activity, superior thermal/hydrothermal stability, and unique shape-selectivity. In this review, a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art achievements in catalytic applications of zeolite-supported metal catalysts are presented for important heterogeneous catalytic processes in the last five years, mainly including 1) the hydrogenation reactions (e.g., CO/CO2 hydrogenation, hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds, and hydrogenation of nitrogenous compounds); 2) dehydrogenation reactions (e.g., alkane dehydrogenation and dehydrogenation of chemical hydrogen storage materials); 3) oxidation reactions (e.g., CO oxidation, methane oxidation, and alkene epoxidation); and 4) other reactions (e.g., hydroisomerization reaction and selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia reaction). Finally, some current limitations and future perspectives on the challenge and opportunity for this subject are pointed out. It is believed that this review will inspire more innovative research on the synthesis and catalysis of zeolite-supported metal catalysts and promote their future developments to meet the emerging demands for practical applications.

Abstract
Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) to propene is an important alternative to oil-based cracking processes, to produce this industrially important platform chemical1,2. The commercial PDH technologies utilizing Cr-containing (refs. 3,4) or Pt-containing (refs. 5-8) catalysts suffer from the toxicity of Cr(VI) compounds or the need to use ecologically harmful chlorine for catalyst regeneration9. Here, we introduce a method for preparation of environmentally compatible supported catalysts based on commercial ZnO. This metal oxide and a support (zeolite or common metal oxide) are used as a physical mixture or in the form of two layers with ZnO as the upstream layer. Supported ZnOx species are in situ formed through a reaction of support OH groups with Zn atoms generated from ZnO upon reductive treatment above 550 °C. Using different complementary characterization methods, we identify the decisive role of defective OH groups for the formation of active ZnOx species. For benchmarking purposes, the developed ZnO-silicalite-1 and an analogue of commercial K-CrOx/Al2O3 were tested in the same setup under industrially relevant conditions at close propane conversion over about 400 h on propane stream. The developed catalyst reveals about three times higher propene productivity at similar propene selectivity.

Abstract
Design and preparation of low-cost, effective, and novel catalysts are important topics in the field of heterogeneous catalysis from academic and industrial perspectives. Recently, heteroatom-doped porous carbon/metal materials have received significant attention as promising catalysts in divergent organic reactions. Incorporation of heteroatom into the carbon framework can tailor the properties of carbon, providing suitable interaction between support and metal, resulting in superior catalytic performance compared with those of traditional pure carbon/metal catalytic systems. In this review, we try to underscore the recent advances in the design, preparation, and application of heteroatom-doped porous carbon/metal catalysts towards various organic transformations.

Abstract
The ZnIn/HZSM-5 catalyst was prepared by the wetness impregnation method, and the structure of catalyst was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, TG, and N2 adsorption–desorption and then investigated in the coupling of propane with CO2 to propylene. It is found that the addition of Zn species is beneficial to the dispersion of In2O3 over HZSM-5, which plays an important role in propene formation, and adjusts the acidity distribution of In/HZSM-5 catalyst, as well as significantly improves the activity of In/HZSM-5 catalyst. The selectivity of propylene is 68.21% in the coupling of propane with CO2 over ZnIn/HZSM-5 catalyst when the time on stream (TOS) is 2 h, reaction temperature is 580 °C, reaction pressure is 0.3 MPa, C3H6:CO2:N2 = 1:4:5, catalyst mass is 0.2 g, and space velocity is 6000 mL gcat−1 h−1. However, the selectivity of propylene is only 63.33% and 0.25% in the propane dehydrogenation or CO2 hydrogenation reaction, respectively. The ZnIn/HZSM-5 catalyst showed a higher stability with only 0.80% conversion drop after three cycles.

Abstract
Ga-based catalysts are promising for use in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) because of the relatively superior activity, but the conventional Ga-based catalysts usually suffer from serious deactivation and unsatisfactory propene selectivity. Here, ultrafine bimetallic Ga-Pt nanocatalysts encapsulated into silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolites (GaPt@S-1) were synthesized by a facile ligand-protected direct H2-reduction method. It is indicated that this catalyst is composed of confined ultra-small GaPt alloy nanoclusters and a part of isolated tetrahedral coordination of Ga species. The confined GaPt alloy nanoclusters are the active sites for PDH reaction, and their high electron density could boost the desorption of products, resulting in a high propene selectivity of 92.1% and propene formation rate of 20.5 mol g-1Pt h-1 at 600 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over GaPt@S-1 catalyst even after 24 h on stream at 600 °C, affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.0068 h-1, which is much lower than that of the conventional Ga-based catalysts. Notably, the restriction of the zeolite can enhance the regeneration stability of the catalyst, and the catalytic activity kept unchanged after four consecutive cycles.
