From Boron Organic Polymers to in situ Ultrafine Nano Pd and Pt: Green Synthesis and Application for High Efficiency Hydrogen Evolution

Platinum Nanoparticles Prevent the Resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to Ciprofloxacin and Imipenem: Mechanism Insights

Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have recently gained extensive attention due to their broad-spectrum prospect, particularly in biomedical application. Here, we reveal that long-term exposure to platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) increases the susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 to imipenem and ciprofloxacin. We exposed PAO1 to Pt NPs (a series of doses, varying from 0.125 to 35 μg/mL) for 60 days and characterized the evolved strains (ES) and compared with wild type (WT) to understand the mechanism of heightened sensitivity. We found that overexpression of oprD and downregulation of mexEF-oprN facilitate the intracellular accumulation of antibiotic, thus increasing susceptibility. Furthermore, loss-of-function mutations were discovered in regulators lasR and mexT. Cloning intact lasR from wild-type (WT) into ES slightly improves imipenem resistance. Strikingly, cloning mexT from WT into ES reverts the imipenem and ciprofloxacin resistance to the original level. Briefly, the increase of membrane permeability controlled by mexT made PAO1 greatly susceptible to imipenem and ciprofloxacin, and the decrease of quorum sensing mediated by lasR made PAO1 slightly susceptible to imipenem. Overall, these results reveal an antibiotic susceptibility mechanism from prolonged exposure to MNPs, which provides a promising approach to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Atom-dispersed copper and nano-palladium in the boron-carbon-nitrogen matric cooperate to realize the efficient purification of nitrate wastewater and the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NIRR) driven by sustainable energy is not only expected to realize the green production of ammonia under ambient conditions, but also a promising way to purify nitrate wastewater. The ammonia yield rate and Faradaic efficiency of NIRR catalyzed by Pd10Cu/BCN constructed with structural constraints and pre-embedded reducing agent strategies were as high as 102,153 μg h^-1 mg_cat.^-1 and 91.47%, respectively. Pd10Cu/BCN can remove nearly 100% of 50 mg L^-1 NO₃^- without NO₂^- residue within 10 h, and the realization of this effect does not require the participation of any chloride. Control experiments and DFT calculations explain the efficient operation mechanism of NIRR on Pd10Cu/BCN, where the Pd and CuN4 sites play the role of synergistic catalysis. Compared with the reported literature, Pd10Cu/BCN with good biocompatibility has become an outstanding representative of NIRR catalyst, which provides an alternative way for the green production of ammonia and the purification of nitrate wastewater.

A review on platinum(0) nanocatalysts for hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane

This review reports a survey on the progress in developing highly efficient platinum nanocatalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane (AB). After a short prelude emphasizing the importance of increasing the atom efficiency of high cost, precious platinum nanoparticles (NPs) which are known to be one of the highest activity catalysts for hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of AB, this article reviews all the available reports on the use of platinum-based catalysts for this hydrolysis reaction covering (i) early tested platinum catalysts, (ii) platinum(0) NPs supported on oxides, (iii) platinum(0) NPs supported on carbonaceous materials, (iv) supported platinum single-atom catalysts, (v) bimetallic- and (vi) multimetallic-platinum NP nanocatalysts, and (vii) magnetically separable platinum-based catalysts. All the reported results are tabulated along with the important parameters used in the platinum-catalyzed hydrolysis of AB. In the section "Concluding remarks and a look towards the future" a discussion is devoted to the approaches for making high cost, precious platinum catalysts as efficient as possible, ultimately lowering the cost, including the suggestions for the future research in this field.

Controlled growth of ultrafine metal nanoparticles mediated by solid supports

As a unique class of nanomaterials with a high surface-area-to-volume ratio and narrow size distribution, ultrafine metal nanoparticles (UMNPs) have shown exciting properties in many applications, particularly in the field of catalysis. Growing UMNPs in situ on solid supports enables precise control of the UMNP size, and the supports can effectively prevent the aggregation of UMNPs and maintain their high catalytic activity. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress in controlled growth of UMNPs using various solid supports and their applications in catalysis.

Through quorum sensing, Pseudomonas aeruginosa resists noble metal-based nanomaterials toxicity

Noble metal-based nanomaterials (NMNs), such as platinum nanoparticles (Pt@NPs) and palladium nanoparticles (Pd@NPs), are increasingly being used as antibacterial agents. However, little information is available on bacterial resistance to NMNs. In this study, owing to their oxidase-like and peroxidase-like properties, both Pt@NPs and Pd@NPs induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and manifest antibacterial activities: 6.25 μg/mL of either Pt@NPs or Pd@NPs killed >50% of Staphylococcus aureus strain ATCC29213. However, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1 completely resisted 12.5 μg/mL of Pt@NPs and 6.25 μg/mL of Pd@NPs. Compared to the non-NMN groups, these NMNs promoted 2-3-fold upregulation of the quorum sensing (QS) gene lasR in strain PAO1. In fact, the lasR gene upregulation induced a 1.5-fold reduction in ROS production and increased biofilm formation by 11% (Pt@NPs) and 27% (Pd@NPs) in strain PAO1. The ΔlasR mutants (lasR gene knock out in strain PAO1), became sensitive to NMNs. The survival rates of ΔlasR mutants at 12.5 μg/mL Pt@NPs and Pd@NPs treatments were only 77% and 58%, respectively. This is the first report indicating that bacteria can resist NMNs through QS. Based on these results, evaluation of the ecological risks of using NMNs as antibacterial agents is necessary.

Recent developments of nanocatalyzed liquid-phase hydrogen generation

Hydrogen is the most effective and sustainable carrier of clean energy, and liquid-phase hydrogen storage materials with high hydrogen content, reversibility and good dehydrogenation kinetics are promising in view of "hydrogen economy". Efficient, low-cost, safe and selective hydrogen generation from chemical storage materials remains challenging, however. In this Review article, an overview of the recent achievements is provided, addressing the topic of nanocatalysis of hydrogen production from liquid-phase hydrogen storage materials including metal-boron hydrides, borane-nitrogen compounds, and liquid organic hydrides. The state-of-the-art catalysts range from high-performance nanocatalysts based on noble and non-noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) to emerging single-atom catalysts. Key aspects that are discussed include insights into the dehydrogenation mechanisms, regenerations from the spent liquid chemical hydrides, and tandem reactions using the in situ generated hydrogen. Finally, challenges, perspectives, and research directions for this area are envisaged.

BCN-Encapsulated Nano-nickel Synergistically Promotes Ambient Electrochemical Dinitrogen Reduction

The electricity provided by solar or wind power can drive nitrogen in the atmosphere, combining with ubiquitous water to form ammonia, and distributed production methods can alleviate the irreversible damage to the environment caused by the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. Here, we have designed a novel Ni-doped BCN heterojunction (S/M-BOPs-1) as a catalyst for the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). The ammonia yield rate and Faraday efficiency in NRR driven by S/M-BOPs-1 reach up to 16.72 μg^-1 h^-1 cm^-2 and 13.06%, respectively. Moreover, S/M-BOPs-1 still maintains high NRR activity and excellent stability after recycling for eight times and long-time operation of 12 h. Using density functional theory calculations, we reveal a possible NRR path for N₂ to NH₃ on Ni, BCN, and the S/M-BOPs-1 composite surfaces. The interaction between the BCN matrix and Ni nanoparticles promotes a synergetic effect for the electrochemical NRR efficiency due to the partial electron transfer from the Ni particles to BCN that inhibits hydrogen evolution reaction and decreases the rate-determining step on Ni surfaces toward NRR by ∼1.5 times. Therefore, efficient NRR performance can be achieved by tuning the electronic properties of non-noble metals via the formation of a heterointerface.

New perspective of a nano-metal preparation pathway based on the hexahydro-closo-hexaborate anion

Today, metal-based nanomaterials play an increasingly important role in the energy, environment, medical and health fields. In order to meet the needs of various fields, it is necessary to continuously develop advanced technologies for preparing metal-based materials. Inspired by previous research, the results of a proof-of-concept experiment show that the hexahydro-closo-hexaborate anion (closo-[B₆H₇]⁻) in the borane cluster family has properties similar to NaBH₄. Closo-[B₆H₇]⁻ can not only convert common precious metal ions such as Au³⁺, Pd²⁺, Pt⁴⁺ and Ag⁺ to the corresponding zero-valence state, but also convert some non-precious metals such as Cu²⁺ and Ni²⁺ to the zero-valent or oxidation state. Closo-[B₆H₇]⁻ moderate reduction to cause rapid aggregation of metal-based materials is not easy compared with NaBH₄. Compared with closo-[B₁2H₁₂]²⁻, closo-[B₆H₇]⁻ achieves the conversion of Pt⁴⁺ to Pt⁰ under ambient conditions, and its reduction performance extends to non-precious metals. The excellent stability and easy modification characteristics determine the universality of the closo-[B₆H₇]⁻ reduction strategy for metal ions.

Transformation from 3D Boron Organic Polymers to 1D Nanorod Arrays: Loading Highly Dispersed Nanometal for Green Catalysis

The increasing global demands for eco-friendly and low-cost catalysts have propelled the advent of nanosized non-noble-metal catalysts to replace traditional noble metals. In this work, ultrafine NiO nanoparticles were prepared rapidly in situ by the strategy of transforming three-dimensional (3D) metal boron organic polymers (BOPs@Ni²⁺) to one-dimensional (1D) boron organic polymers (BOPs@Ni) nanorod arrays at room temperature. The 3D BOPs@Ni²⁺ can be quickly obtained by the interaction of 4,4'-bipyridine with Ni²⁺ and dodecaborate (B₁₂H₁₂^2-) in an aqueous solution. When Ni²⁺ is converted into NiO in situ, 1D BOPs@Ni nanostructure transformation from the 3D BOPs@Ni²⁺ framework was achieved due to the B-H···π interaction between B₁₂H₁₂^2- and 4,4'-bipyridine. Furthermore, BOPs@Ni exhibits high catalytic activity and rapid kinetics in the conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, and the high stability of 1D nanorod arrays guarantees the catalytic activity of BOP@Ni to barely change under recycling for at least 10 times. BOPs@Ni also exhibits good catalytic performance and high selectivity characteristics in the catalytic reduction of a series of nitrobenzene derivatives. This strategy of using BOPs@Ni²⁺ for loading self-supporting nanometal not only exhibits a highly efficient catalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene and its derivative but also provides an effective technical route for designing self-supported nanometal materials.
