WS 2 Nanosheets with Highly‐Enhanced Electrochemical Activity by Facile Control of Sulfur Vacancies

Rationally designing of Co-WS2 catalysts with optimized electronic structure to enhance hydrogen evolution reaction

Designing and developing cost-effective, high-performance catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for advancing hydrogen production technology. Tungsten-based sulfides (WSx) exhibit great potential as efficient HER catalysts, however, the activity is limited by the larger energy required for water dissociation under alkaline conditions. Herein, we adopt a top-down strategy to construct heterostructure Co-WS2 nanofiber catalysts. The experimental results and theoretical simulations unveil that the work functions-induced built-in electric field at the interface of Co-WS2 catalysts facilitates the electron transfer from Co to WS2, significantly reducing water dissociation energy and optimizing the Gibbs free energy of the entire reaction step for HER. Besides, the self-supported catalysts of Co-WS2 nanoparticles confining 1D nanofibers exhibit an increased number of active sites. As expected, the heterostructure Co-WS2 catalysts exhibit remarkable HER activity with an overpotential of 113 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 and stability with 30 h catalyzing at 23 mA cm-2. This work can provide an avenue for designing highly efficient catalysts applicable to the field of energy storage and conversion.

Constructing Tunable Electrides on Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Electrides have emerged as promising materials with exotic properties due to the presence of localized electrons detached from all atoms. Despite the continuous discovery of many new electrides, most of them are based on atypical compositions, and their applications require an inert surface structure to passivate reactive excess electrons. Here, we demonstrate a different route to attain tunable electrides. We first report that monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) exhibit weak electride characteristics, which is the remainder of the electride feature of the transition metal sublattice. By introducing chalcogen vacancies, the enhanced electride characteristics are comparable to those of known electrides. Since the precise tailoring of the chalcogen vacancy concentration has been achieved experimentally, we proposed that TMDCs can be used to build electrides with controllable intensities. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the electride states at the chalcogen vacancy of monolayer TMDCs will play an important role in catalyzing hydrogen evolution reactions.

Conversion of Layered WS2 Crystals into Mixed-Domain Electrochemical Catalysts by Plasma-Assisted Surface Reconstruction

Electrocatalytic water splitting is crucial to generate clean hydrogen fuel, but implementation at an industrial scale remains limited due to dependence on expensive platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts. Here, an all-dry process to transform electrochemically inert bulk WS2 into a multidomain electrochemical catalyst that enables scalable and cost-effective implementation of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis is reported. Direct dry transfer of WS2 flakes to a gold thin film deposited on a silicon substrate provides a general platform to produce the working electrodes for HER with tunable charge transfer resistance. By treating the mechanically exfoliated WS2 with sequential Ar-O2 plasma, mixed domains of WS2, WO3, and tungsten oxysulfide form on the surfaces of the flakes, which gives rise to a superior HER with much greater long-term stability and steady-state activity compared to Pt. Using density functional theory, ultraefficient atomic sites formed on the constituent nanodomains are identified, and the quantification of atomic-scale reactivities and resulting HER activities fully support the experimental observations.

Earthworm Coelomocyte Internalization of MoS2 Nanosheets: Multiplexed Imaging, Molecular Profiling, and Computational Modeling

Fully understanding the cellular uptake and intracellular localization of MoS2 nanosheets (NSMoS2) is a prerequisite for their safe applications. Here, we characterized the uptake profile of NSMoS2 by functional coelomocytes of the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Considering that vacancy engineering is widely applied to enhance the NSMoS2 performance, we assessed the potential role of such atomic vacancies in regulating cellular uptake processes. Coelomocyte internalization and lysosomal accumulation of NSMoS2 were tracked by fluorescent labeling imaging. Cellular uptake inhibitors, proteomics, and transcriptomics helped to mechanistically distinguish vacancy-mediated endocytosis pathways. Specifically, Mo ions activated transmembrane transporter and ion-binding pathways, entering the coelomocyte through assisted diffusion. Unlike molybdate, pristine NSMoS2 (P-NSMoS2) induced protein polymerization and upregulated gene expression related to actin filament binding, which phenotypically initiated actin-mediated endocytosis. Conversely, vacancy-rich NSMoS2 (V-NSMoS2) were internalized by coelomocytes through a vesicle-mediated and energy-dependent pathway. Mechanistically, atomic vacancies inhibited mitochondrial transport gene expression and likely induced membrane stress, significantly enhancing endocytosis (20.3%, p < 0.001). Molecular dynamics modeling revealed structural and conformational damage of cytoskeletal protein caused by P-NSMoS2, as well as the rapid response of transport protein to V-NSMoS2. These findings demonstrate that earthworm functional coelomocytes can accumulate NSMoS2 and directly mediate cytotoxicity and that atomic vacancies can alter the endocytic pathway and enhance cellular uptake by reprogramming protein response and gene expression patterns. This study provides an important mechanistic understanding of the ecological risks of NSMoS2.

Elucidating the Volcanic-Type Catalytic Behavior in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries via Defect Engineering

Defects are generally considered to be effective and flexible in the catalytic reactions of lithium-sulfur batteries. However, the influence of the defect concentration on catalysis remains ambiguous. In this work, molybdenum sulfide with different sulfur vacancy concentrations is comprehensively modulated, showing that the defect level and the adsorption-catalytic performance result in a volcano relationship. Moreover, density functional theory and in situ experiments reveal that the optimal level of sulfur defects can effectively increase the binding energy between molybdenum sulfide and lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), lower the energy barrier of the LiPS conversion reaction, and promote the kinetics of Li2S bidirectional catalytic reaction. The lower bidirectional catalytic performance incited by excessive or deficient sulfur defects is mainly due to the deformed geometrical structures and reduced adsorption of key LiPSs on the catalyst surface. This work underscores the imperative of controlling the defect content and provides a potential approach to the commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries.

Comprehensively Understanding the Role of Anion Vacancies on K-Ion Storage: A Case Study of Se-Vacancy-Engineered VSe2

Anion vacancy engineering (AVE) is widely used to improve the Li-ion and Na-ion storage of conversion-type anode materials. However, AVE is still an emerging strategy in K-ion batteries, which are promising for large-scale energy storage. In addition, the role of anion vacancies on ion storage is far from clear, despite several proposed explanations. Herein, by employing VSe₂ as a model conversion-type anode material, Se vacancies are intentionally introduced (labeled as P-VSe_2-x ) to investigate their effect on K⁺ storage. The P-VSe_2-x shows excellent cyclability in half cells (143 mA h g^-1 at 3.0 A g^-1 after 1000 cycles) and high energy density in coin-type full cells (206.8 Wh kg^-1 ). By applying various electrochemical techniques, the effects of Se vacancies on the redox potentials of K-ion insertion/extraction and the K-ion diffusion in electrodes upon cycling are uncovered. In addition, the structural evolution of Se vacancies during potassiation/de-potassiation using various operando and ex characterizations is revealed. Moreover, it is demonstrated that Se vacancies can facilitate the breaking of VSe bonds upon the P-VSe_2-x conversion using theoretical calculations. This work comprehensively explains the role of anion vacancies in ion storage for developing high-performance conversion-type anode materials.

Recent advances in understanding and design of efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts for water splitting: A comprehensive review

An unsustainable reliance on fossil fuels is the primary cause of the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn lead to climate change. Green hydrogen (H₂), which may be generated by electrolyzing water with renewable power sources, is a possible substitute for fossil fuels. On the other hand, the increasing intricacy of hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts that are presently being explored makes it more challenging to integrate catalytic theories, catalytic fabrication procedures, and characterization techniques. This review will initially present the thermodynamics, kinetics, and associated electrical and structural characteristics for HER electrocatalysts before highlighting design approaches for the electrocatalysts. Secondly, an in-depth discussion regarding the rational design, synthesis, mechanistic insight, and performance improvement of electrocatalysts is centered on both the intrinsic and extrinsic influences. Thirdly, the most recent technological advances in electrocatalytic water-splitting approaches are described. Finally, the difficulties and possibilities associated with generating extremely effective HER electrocatalysts for water-splitting applications are discussed.

Filling Selenium into Sulfur Vacancies in Ultrathin Tungsten Sulfide Nanosheets for Superior Potassium Storage

The development of WS₂ as an anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) is severely confined by the low K⁺ storage capacity and poor intrinsic electrical conductivity. Our previous study demonstrated that the creation of sulfur vacancies (V_S) in WS₂ can enhance its K⁺ storage capability. However, it is a big challenge to keep the stability of V_S while reserving the excellent activity. Herein, we design Se-filled WS₂ nanosheets with V_S (V_S-WS₂-Se NS) for PIBs. The Se heteroatom filling into the V_S can not only stabilize and activate them, rendering more active sites to adsorb K⁺, but also further enhance the electrical conductivity. Consequently, the V_S-WS₂-Se NS anode presents significantly promoted storage capacity and reaction kinetics, superior to the pristine WS₂ and WS₂ with only V_S. Remarkably, the V_S-WS₂-Se NS anode exhibits the highest specific capacity of 363.9 mA h g^-1 at 0.05 A g^-1. Simultaneously, a high reversible capacity of 144.2 mA h g^-1 after 100 cycles at 2.0 A g^-1 is shown. Ex situ analyses demonstrated that the potassium storage mechanism involves the intercalation and conversion reaction between WS₂ and K⁺. Moreover, DFT calculations revealed that the Se filling into V_S can further enhance the electrical conductivity and reduce the K-insertion energy barriers of WS₂ and thus account for the outstanding electrochemical performance. This study demonstrates that engineering the vacancies by the heteroatom filling strategy offers a novel and feasible route for designing high-performance electrode materials in various energy-storage systems.

Vacancy Defects in 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Electrocatalysts: From Aggregated to Atomic Configuration

Vacancy defect engineering has been well leveraged to flexibly shape comprehensive physicochemical properties of diverse catalysts. In particular, growing research effort has been devoted to engineering chalcogen anionic vacancies (S/Se/Te) of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) toward the ultimate performance limit of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In spite of remarkable progress achieved in the past decade, systematic and in-depth insights into the state-of-the-art vacancy engineering for 2D-TMDs-based electrocatalysis are still lacking. Herein, this review delivers a full picture of vacancy engineering evolving from aggregated to atomic configurations covering their development background, controllable manufacturing, thorough characterization, and representative HER application. Of particular interest, the deep-seated correlations between specific vacancy regulation routes and resulting catalytic performance improvement are logically clarified in terms of atomic rearrangement, charge redistribution, energy band variation, intermediate adsorption-desorption optimization, and charge/mass transfer facilitation. Beyond that, a broader vision is cast into the cutting-edge research fields of vacancy-engineering-based single-atom catalysis and dynamic structure-performance correlations across catalyst service lifetime. Together with critical discussion on residual challenges and future prospects, this review sheds new light on the rational design of advanced defect catalysts and navigates their broader application in high-efficiency energy conversion and storage fields.

Rational Design of Better Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting: A Review

The excessive dependence on fossil fuels contributes to the majority of CO₂ emissions, influencing on the climate change. One promising alternative to fossil fuels is green hydrogen, which can be produced through water electrolysis from renewable electricity. However, the variety and complexity of hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts currently studied increases the difficulty in the integration of catalytic theory, catalyst design and preparation, and characterization methods. Herein, this review first highlights design principles for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, presenting the thermodynamics, kinetics, and related electronic and structural descriptors for HER. Second, the reasonable design, preparation, mechanistic understanding, and performance enhancement of electrocatalysts are deeply discussed based on intrinsic and extrinsic effects. Third, recent advancements in the electrocatalytic water splitting technology are further discussed briefly. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of the development of highly efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts for water splitting are proposed.

Coupling of Ru nanoclusters decorated mixed-phase (1T and 2H) MoSe2 on biomass-derived carbon substrate for advanced hydrogen evolution reaction

The development of efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water splitting is one of the most promising strategies to achieve the goal of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality. Herein, Ru nanoclusters decorated MoSe₂ nanosheets supported on a Crepis tectorum fluff biomass-derived hollow carbon tube (Ru-MoSe₂/CMT) are prepared as the HER catalysts in both alkaline and acidic conditions. The Ru modification induces the transformation of MoSe₂ from 2H phase to 1T phase. Benefiting from the strong water dissociation ability of Ru, Ru-MoSe₂/CMT exhibits a low overpotential of 70 mV with a Tafel slope of 39 mV dec^-1 in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, the assembled Ru-MoSe₂/CMT || RuO₂ system with a low cell voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm^-2 exhibits outstanding overall water splitting performance superior to Pt/C || RuO₂ system. The Ru-MoSe₂/CMT || RuO₂ system also achieves the excellent stability of up to 30 h in 1 M KOH. The synergy effect between Ru and MoSe₂, as well as the improved electron transfer kinetics provided by the biomass-derived carbon substrate together contribute to the excellent HER activity of Ru-MoSe₂/CMT.

Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheets Decorated with Platinum Nanoparticle as a High Active Electrocatalyst in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) refers to the process of generating hydrogen by splitting water molecules with applied external voltage on the active catalysts. HER reaction in the acidic medium can be studied by different mechanisms such as Volmer reaction (adsorption), Heyrovsky reaction (electrochemical desorption) or Tafel reaction (recombination). In this paper, facile hydrothermal methods are utilized to synthesis a high-performance metal-inorganic composite electrocatalyst, consisting of platinum nanoparticles (Pt) and molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS₂) with different platinum loading. The as-synthesized composite is further used as an electrocatalyst for HER. The as-synthesized Pt/Mo-90-modified glassy carbon electrode shows the best electrocatalytic performance than pure MoS₂ nanosheets. It exhibits Pt-like performance with the lowest Tafel slope of 41 mV dec^-1 and superior electrocatalytic stability in an acidic medium. According to this, the HER mechanism is related to the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism, where hydrogen adsorption and desorption occur in the two-step process. According to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis, the presence of Pt nanoparticles enhanced the HER performance of the MoS₂ nanosheets because of the increased number of charge carriers transport.

Designing Self-Supported Electrocatalysts for Electrochemical Water Splitting: Surface/Interface Engineering toward Enhanced Electrocatalytic Performance

Electrochemical water splitting is regarded as the most attractive technique to store renewable electricity in the form of hydrogen fuel. However, the corresponding anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remain challenging, which exhibit complex reactions and sluggish kinetic behaviors at the triple-phase interface. Material surface and interface engineering provide a feasible approach to improve catalytic activity. Besides, self-supported electrocatalysts have been proven to be highly efficient toward water splitting, because of the regulated catalyst/substrate interface. In this Review, the state-of-the-art achievements in self-supported electrocatalyst for HER/OER have demonstrated the feasibility of surface and interface engineering strategies to boost performance. The six key effective surface/interface engineering approaches for rational catalysts design are systematically reviewed, including defect engineering, morphology engineering, crystallographic tailoring, heterostructure design, catalyst/substrate interface engineering, and catalyst/electrolyte interface regulation. Finally, the challenges and opportunities on the valuable directions are proposed to inspire future investigation of highly active and durable HER/OER electrocatalysts.

Recent Advances in WS2 and Its Based Heterostructures for Water-Splitting Applications

The energy from fossil fuels has been recognized as a main factor of global warming and environmental pollution. Therefore, there is an urgent need to replace fossil fuels with clean, cost-effective, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly fuel to solve the future energy crisis of the world. Therefore, the development of clean, sustainable, and renewable energy sources is a prime concern. In this regard, solar energy-driven hydrogen production is considered as an overriding opening for renewable and green energy by virtue of its high energy efficiency, high energy density, and non-toxicity along with zero emissions. Water splitting is a promising technology for producing hydrogen, which represents a potentially and environmentally clean fuel. Water splitting is a widely known process for hydrogen production using different techniques and materials. Among different techniques of water splitting, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting using semiconductor materials have been considered as the most scalable and cost-effective approaches for the commercial production of sustainable hydrogen. In order to achieve a high yield of hydrogen from these processes, obtaining a suitable, efficient, and stable catalyst is a significant factor. Among the different types of semiconductor catalysts, tungsten disulfide (WS2) has been widely utilized as a catalytic active material for the water-splitting process, owing to its layered 2D structure and its interesting chemical, physical, and structural properties. However, WS2 suffers from some disadvantages that limit its performance in catalytic water splitting. Among the various techniques and strategies that have been constructed to overcome the limitations of WS2 is heterostructure construction. In this process, WS2 is coupled with another semiconducting material in order to facilitate the charge transfer and prevent the charge recombination, which will enhance the catalytic performance. This review aims to summarize the recent studies and findings on WS2 and its heterostructures as a catalyst in the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water-splitting processes.
