Abstract
The selective hydrogenation of the biomass platform molecule furfural (FAL) to produce furfuryl alcohol (FA) is of great significance to alleviate the energy crisis. Cu-based catalysts are the most commonly used catalysts, and their catalytic performance can be optimized by changing the preparation method. This paper emphasized the effect of calcination atmosphere on the performance of a Cu/Al2O3 catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of FAL. The precursor of the Cu/Al2O3 catalyst prepared by the ammonia evaporation method was treated with different calcination atmospheres (N2 and air). On the basis of the combined results from the characterizations using in situ XRD, TEM, N2O titration, H2-TPR and XPS, the Cu/Al2O3 catalyst calcined in the N2 atmosphere was more favorable for the dispersion and reduction of Cu species and the reduction process could produce more Cu+ and Cu0 species, which facilitated the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FA. The experimental results showed that the N2 calcination atmosphere improved the FAL conversion and FA selectivity, and the FAL conversion was further increased after reduction. Cu/Al2O3-N2-R exhibited the outstanding performance, with a high yield of 99.9% of FA after 2 h at 120 °C and an H2 pressure of 1 MPa. This work provides a simple, efficient and economic method to improve the C=O hydrogenation performance of Cu-based catalysts.

Abstract
Currently, there is a great interest in the development of sustainable and green technologies for production of biofuels and chemicals. In this sense, much attention is being paid to lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock, as alternative to fossil-based resources, inasmuch as its fractions can be transformed into value-added chemicals. Two important platform molecules derived from lignocellulosic sugars are furfural and levulinic acid, which can be transformed into a large spectrum of chemicals, by hydrogenation, oxidation, or condensation, with applications as solvents, agrochemicals, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, among others. However, in many cases, noble metal-based catalysts, scarce and expensive, are used. Therefore, an important effort is performed to search the most abundant, readily available, and cheap transition-metal-based catalysts. Among these, copper-based catalysts have been proposed, and the present review deals with the hydrogenation of furfural and levulinic acid, with Cu-based catalysts, into several relevant chemicals: furfuryl alcohol, 2-methylfuran, and cyclopentanone from FUR, and γ-valerolactone and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran from LA. Special emphasis has been placed on catalytic processes used (gas- and liquid-phase, catalytic transfer hydrogenation), under heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, the effect of addition of other metal to Cu-based catalysts has been considered, as well as the issue related to catalyst stability in reusing studies.

Preparation of Highly Active Cu/SiO2 Catalysts for Furfural to 2-Methylfuran by Ammonia Evaporation Method. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
Biomass plays an important role in the green manufacture of high value-added chemicals. Among them, the conversion of furfural (FFA) into 2-methylfuran (2-MF), catalyzed by a copper-chromium catalyst, is important in its industrial application. However, the use of chromium is limited due to its toxicity and pollution of the environment. In this paper, a Cu/SiO2 catalyst, prepared by the ammonia evaporation method, shows a better catalytic performance compared with that prepared by the co-precipitation method for the vapor-phase hydrodeoxygenation of FFA. The selectivity of 2-MF is higher than 80% with almost a complete conversion of FFA. Combined with the characterizations, the superiority of the ammonia evaporation method is attributed to the reduction of highly dispersed copper species and the increased Cu+/(Cu+ + Cu0) ratio due to the formation of a large content of copper phyllosilicate during the preparation. Moreover, Cu+ sites can act as a weak acid site, which improve the surface acidity of the catalyst and facilitate the formation of 2-MF. This new catalytic system provides a feasible and promising strategy for the industrial preparation of 2-MF from FFA, and effectively utilizes biomass resources to promote the development of biomass industry.

Abstract
Joule heating studies on nanoparticle/nanocarbon hybrid aerogels have been reported, but systematic investigations on hydrotalcite-derived catalysts supported onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogels are rare. In this study, hydrotalcite-derived Cu-Al2O3 nanoparticles were incorporated into a porous and multifunctional rGO aerogel support for fabricating electrically conducting Cu-Al2O3/rGO hybrid aerogels, and their properties were investigated in detail. The hybridization of Cu-Al2O3 with a 3D nanocarbon support network imparts additional functionalities to the widely used functional inorganic nanoparticles, such as direct electrical framework heating and easy regeneration and separation of spent nanoparticles, with well-spaced nanoparticle segregation. 3D variable-range hopping model fitting confirmed that electrons were able to reach the entire aerogel to enable uniform resistive heating. The conductivity of the nanocarbon support framework facilitates uniform and fast heating (up to 636 K/min) of the embedded nanoparticles at very low energy consumption, while the large porosity and high thermal conductivity enable efficient heat dissipation during natural cooling (up to 336 K/min). The thermal stability of the hybrid aerogel was demonstrated by repeated heating/cooling cycling at different temperatures that were relevant to important industrial applications. The facile synthetic approach can be easily adapted to fabricate other types of multifunctional nanoparticle/nanocarbon hybrid aerogels, such as the MgAl-MMO/rGO aerogel and the Ni-Al2O3/rGO aerogel. These findings open up new routes to the functionalization of inorganic nanoparticles and extend their application ranges that involve electrical/thermal heating, temperature-dependent catalysis, sorption, and sensing.

Abstract
In this study, the role of manganese precursors in mesoporous (meso) MnOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was examined systematically for toluene oxidation under ozone at ambient temperature (20 °C). The meso MnOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts developed with Mn(CH3COO)2, MnCl2, Mn(NO3)2.4H2O and MnSO4 were prepared by an innovative single step solvent-deficient method (SDM); the catalysts were labeled as MnOx/Al2O3(A), MnOx/Al2O3(C), MnOx/Al2O3(N), and MnOx/Al2O3(S), respectively. Among all, MnOx/Al2O3(C) showed superior performance both in toluene removal (95%) as well as ozone decomposition (88%) followed by acetate, nitrate and sulphated precursor MnOx/Al2O3. The superior performance of MnOx/Al2O3(C) in the oxidation of toluene to COx is associated with the ozone decomposition over highly dispersed MnOx in which extremely active oxygen radicals (O2-, O22- and O-) are generated to enhance the oxidation ability of the catalysts greatly. In addition, toluene adsorption over acid support played a vital role in this reaction. Hence, the properties such as optimum Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio, acidic sites, and smaller particle size (≤2 nm) examined by XPS, TPD of NH3, and TEM results are playing vital role in the present study. In summary, the MnOx/Al2O3 (C) catalyst has great potential in environmental applications particularly for the elimination of volatile organic compounds with low loading of manganese developed by SDM.

Abstract
In this study, the selectively catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of furfural (F-CHO) to 2-methylfuran (F-CH3) on the CuNiCu(111) bimetallic catalyst surface was systematically investigated based on the periodic density functional theory, including dispersion correction. The formation of furfuryl alcohol (F-CH2OH) involved two steps: the preferred first step was the hydrogenation of the branched C atom, forming the alkoxyl intermediate (F-CHO + H = F-CH2O), and the second step was H addition to the alkoxyl group, resulting in furfuryl alcohol (F-CH2O + H = F-CH2OH), which was the rate-controlling step. In contrast, in the formation of 2-methylfuran, the first step was the dehydroxylation of furfuryl alcohol, resulting in alkyl (F-CH2) and OH (F-CH2OH = F-CH2 + OH) groups, the second step was the hydrogenation of F-CH2 (F-CH2 + OH + H = F-CH3 + OH), and the rate-controlling step was the hydrogenation of OH to H2O (OH + H = H2O). Based on the comparison results of the NiCuCu(111), Cu(111), and CuNiCu(111) surfaces, it was concluded that the catalytic performance of the catalyst was closely related to the adsorption structure of furfural. These results provide a basis for studying the intrinsic activity of NiCu catalysts during the hydrodeoxygenation of refined oxygenated compounds involving biomass-derived oils.
