Enhanced Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation on MoO 2 /BiOCl Composite

Heteropoly blue-modified ultrathin bismuth oxychloride nanosheets with oxygen vacancies for efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation in pure water

Photocatalytic nitrogen reduction is a promising green technology for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions. However, the poor charge transfer efficiency and weak N2 adsorption/activation capability severely hamper the ammonia production efficiency. In this work, heteropoly blue (r-PW12) nanoparticles are loaded on the surface of ultrathin bismuth oxychloride nanosheets with oxygen vacancies (BiOCl-OVs) by electrostatic self-assembly method, and a series of xr-PW12/BiOCl-OVs heterojunction composites have been prepared. Acting as a robust support, ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) structure of BiOCl-OVs inhibits the aggregation of r-PW12 nanoparticles, enhancing the interfacial contact between r-PW12 and BiOCl. More importantly, the existence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) provides abundant active sites for efficient N2 adsorption and activation. In combination of the enhanced light absorption and promoted photogenerated carriers separation of xr-PW12/BiOCl-OVs heterojunction, under simulated solar light, the optimal 7r-PW12/BiOCl-OVs exhibits an excellent photocatalytic N2 fixation rate of 33.53 µmol g-1h-1 in pure water, without the need of sacrificial agents and co-catalysts. The reaction dynamics is also monitored by in situ FT-IR spectroscopy, and an associative distal pathway is identified. Our study demonstrates that construction of heteropoly blues-based heterojunction is a promising strategy for developing high-performance N2 reduction photocatalysts. It is anticipated that combining of different defects with heteropoly blues of different structures might provide more possibilities for designing highly efficient photocatalysis systems.

Surface and interface engineering of BiOCl nanomaterials and their photocatalytic applications

BiOCl materials have received much attention because of their unique optical and electrical properties. Still, their unsatisfactory catalytic performance has been troubling researchers, limiting the application of BiOCl-based photocatalysts. Therefore, many researchers have studied the adjustment of BiOCl-based materials to enhance photocatalytic efficiency. This review focuses on surface and interface engineering strategies for boosting the photocatalytic performance of BiOCl-based nanomaterials, including forming oxygen vacancy defects, constructing metal/BiOCl, and the fabrication of semiconductor/BiOCl nanocomposites. The photocatalytic applications of the above composites are also concluded in photodegradation of aqueous pollutants, photocatalytic NO removal, photo-induced H2 production, and CO2 reduction. Special emphasis has been given to the modification methods of BiOCl and photocatalytic mechanisms to provide a more detailed understanding for researchers in the fields of energy conversion and materials sciences.

One-step fabrication of Cu-doped Bi2MoO6 microflower for enhancing performance in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

This study enhances the photocatalytic N₂ immobilization performance of Bi₂MoO₆ through Cu doping. Cu-doped Bi₂MoO₆ was synthesized via a simple solvothermal method. Various characterizations were implemented to examine the influence of Cu doping on the properties of Bi₂MoO₆. Results indicated that the doped Cu element had a valence state of + 2 and substituted the position of Bi³⁺. Cu doping exerted minimal effect on the morphology of Bi₂MoO₆ but largely influenced the energy band structure. The band gap was slightly narrowed, and the conduction band was raised, such that Cu-doped Bi₂MoO₆ could generate more electrons with stronger reducibility. Moreover, importantly, Cu doping reduced work function and improved charge separation efficiency, which was considered the major cause of enhanced photoactivity. In addition, the Cu-Bi₂MoO₆ catalyst exhibited higher capability in the adsorption and activation of N₂. Under the combined effects of the aforementioned changes, Cu-Bi₂MoO₆ demonstrated considerably higher photocatalytic efficiency than Bi₂MoO₆. The optimized NH₃ generation rate reached 302 μmol/L g^-1h^-1 and 157 μmol/L g^-1h^-1 under simulated solar light and visible light, respectively, both achieving about 2.2 times higher than that of Bi₂MoO₆. This work provides a successful example of improving photocatalytic N₂ fixation, and it may show some light on the design and preparation of heteroatom-doped semiconductor photocatalysts for N₂-to-NH₃ conversion.

Bismuth-based semiconductors applied in photocatalytic reduction processes: fundamentals, advances and future perspectives

Bismuth-based semiconductors (BBSs) with their typical layered structures and unique electronic properties are considered an attractive visible light-responsive photocatalysts. Recently, BBS exhibited promising properties and was rapidly developed in photoreduction reactions. In this review, we firstly focus on the photoreduction reactions of BBS with a description of the basic principles. Specifically, the restrictive factors of the photoreduction reactions and the design directions of the catalysts are addressed. BBS photocatalysts, such as bismuth oxide, bismuth halide oxide and bismuth-based oxygenates, are presented in terms of the catalyst material design, crystal structure and other features. Furthermore, the primary applications of BBS in photoreduction reactions are described, including CO₂ reduction, N₂ reduction, H₂ evolution, and nitrate reduction. Additionally, the advances and shortages of BBS applied in these processes are summarized and comprehensively discussed. Future works for BBS applied in photoreduction processes are also proposed.

BiOCl Heterojunction photocatalyst: Construction, photocatalytic performance, and applications

BiOCl semiconductors have attracted extensive amounts of attention and have substantial potential in alleviating energy shortages, improving sterilization performance, and solving environmental issues. To improve the optical quantum efficiency of layered BiOCl, the lifetimes of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and BiOCl reduction capacity. During the past decade, researchers have designed many effective methods to weaken the effects of these limitations, and heterojunction construction is regarded as one of the most promising strategies. In this paper, BiOCl heterojunction photocatalysts designed and synthesized by various research groups in recent years were reviewed, and their photocatalytic properties were tested. Among them, direct Z-scheme and S-scheme photocatalysts have high redox potentials and intense redox capabilities. Hence, they exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the applications of BiOCl heterojunctions for pollutant degradation, CO₂ reduction, water splitting, N₂ fixation, organic synthesis, and tumor ablation are also reviewed. Finally, we summarize research on the BiOCl heterojunctions and put forth new insights on overcoming their present limitations.

First-principles-driven catalyst design protocol of 2D/2D heterostructures for electro- and photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction

Ammonia synthesis from nitrogen is a vital process and a necessity in a variety of applications including energy, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and chemical applications. The electro- and photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reactions (NRRs) are promising sustainable processes operated under milder conditions than the conventional Haber-Bosch process. However, the main pain points of these catalytic processes are their low selectivity and low efficiency. This perspective presents the recent status and the design protocols for developing promising 2D/2D heterojunction catalysts for the NRR, using the first-principles approach. The current theoretical studies are briefly discussed, and available methods are suggested for the development and design of new potential 2D/2D heterojunctions as efficient electro- and photo-NRR catalysts.

High-Performance Photocatalytic Reduction of Nitrogen to Ammonia Driven by Oxygen Vacancy and Ferroelectric Polarization Field of SrBi4 Ti4 O15 Nanosheets

Photo-responsive semiconductors can facilitate nitrogen activation and ammonia production, but the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers represents a significant barrier. Ferroelectric photocatalysts show great promise in overcoming this challenge. Herein, by adopting a low-temperature hydrothermal procedure with varying concentrations of glyoxal as the reducing agent, oxygen vacancies (Vo) are effectively produced on the surface of ferroelectric SrBi₄ Ti₄ O₁₅ (SBTO) nanosheets, which leads to a considerable increase in photocatalytic activity toward nitrogen fixation under simulated solar light with an ammonia production rate of 53.41 µmol g^-1 h^-1 , without the need of sacrificial agents or photosensitizers. This is ascribed to oxygen vacancies that markedly enhance the self-polarization and internal electric field of ferroelectric SBTO, and hence, facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and light trapping as well as N₂ adsorption and activation, as compared to pristine SBTO. Consistent results are obtained in theoretical studies. Results from this study highlight the significance of surface oxygen vacancies in enhancing the performance of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation by ferroelectric catalysts.

A minireview on catalysts for photocatalytic N2 fixation to synthesize ammonia

Ammonia (NH3) is an important feedstock in chemical industry. Nowadays NH3 is mainly produced via the industrialized Haber-Bosch process, which requires substantial energy input, since it operates at high temperatures (400-650 °C) and high pressures (20-40 Mpa). From the energy conservation point of view, it is of great significance to explore an alternative avenue to synthesize NH3, which is in line with the concept of sustainable development. Very recently, photocatalytic N2 fixation (PNF) has been discovered as a safe and green approach to synthesize NH3, as it utilizes the inexhaustible solar energy and the abundant N2 in nature to synthesize NH3 under mild conditions. A highly efficient catalyst is the core of PNF. Up to now, extensive studies have been conducted to design efficient catalysts for PNF. Summarizing the catalysts reported for PNF and unraveling their reaction mechanisms could provide guidance for the design of better catalysts. In this review, we will illustrate the development of catalysts for PNF, including semiconductors, plasmonic metal-based catalysts, iron-based catalysts, ruthenium-based catalysts and several other catalysts, point out the remaining challenges and outline the future opportunities, with the aim to contribute to the development of PNF.

Heterojunction-based photocatalytic nitrogen fixation: principles and current progress

Nitrogen fixation is considered one of the grand challenges of the 21st century for achieving the ultimate vision of a green and sustainable future. It is crucial to develop and design sustainable nitrogen fixation techniques with minimal environmental impact as an alternative to the energy-cost intensive Haber-Bosch process. Heterojunction-based photocatalysis has recently emerged as a viable solution for the various environmental and energy issues, including nitrogen fixation. The primary advantages of heterojunction photocatalysts are spatially separated photogenerated charge carriers while retaining high oxidation and reduction potentials of the individual components, enabling visible light-harvesting. This review summarises the fundamental principles of photocatalytic heterostructures, the reaction mechanism of the nitrogen reduction reaction, ammonia detection methods, and the current progress of heterostructured photocatalysts for nitrogen fixation. Finally, future challenges and prospects are briefly discussed for the emerging field of heterostructured photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

CuS/KTa0.75Nb0.25O3 nanocomposite utilizing solar and mechanical energy for catalytic N2 fixation

This work synthesized a novel CuS/KTa_0.75Nb_0.25O₃ (KTN) heterojunction composite and firstly applied it in photocatalytic and piezocatalytic reduction of N₂ to NH₃. XRD, Raman, XPS, SEM, and TEM analyses indicate that CuS nanoparticles closely adhered to the surface of KTN nanorods, which facilitates the migration of electrons between the two semiconductors. Mott-Schottky and valence band XPS analysis shows that KNbO₃ shows a higher conduction band than CuS, indicating that CuS mainly acts as electron trappers to capture the photogenerated electrons from KTN. Because of the great enhanced spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers, the CuS/KTN presents much higher performance than pure KNT, which is further confirmed by ¹H NMR analysis of the reaction solution. An interesting finding is that synthesized CuS/KTN not only performs well under light irradiation but also can work in an ultrasonic bath, indicating its great potential in photo/piezocatalytic conversion of N₂ to NH₃. The optimal 10 %CuS/KTN shows an NH₃ production rate of 36.2 μmol L^-1 g^-1 h^-1 under ultrasonic vibration, which reaches 7.4 times that of KTN. The electrons generated by KTN through the piezoelectric effect can be captured by CuS, which endows the electrons a longer life to participate in the reaction, thereby improving the catalytic reaction performance.

Recent advances in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation: from active sites to ammonia quantification methods

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation has become a hot topic in recent years due to its mild and sustainable advantages. While modifying the photocatalyst to enhance its electron separation, light absorption and nitrogen reduction abilities, the role of the active sites in the catalytic reaction cannot be ignored because the N[triple bond, length as m-dash]N nitrogen bond is too strong to activate. This review summarizes the recent research on nitrogen fixation, focusing on the active sites for N2 on the catalyst surface, classifying common active sites, explaining the main role and additional role of the active sites in catalytic reactions, and discussing the methods to increase the number of active sites and their activation ability. Finally, the outlook for future research is presented. It is hoped this review could help researchers understand more about the activation of the nitrogen molecules and lead more efforts into research on nitrogen fixation photocatalysts.

Fundamentals and applications of photo-thermal catalysis
