Unexpected Effect of Intramolecular Phenolic Group on Electrocatalytic CO 2 Reduction

Redox-Active Ligand Assisted Multielectron Catalysis: A Case of Electrocatalyzed CO2-to-CO Conversion

The selective reduction of carbon dioxide remains a significant challenge due to the complex multielectron/proton transfer process, which results in a high kinetic barrier and the production of diverse products. Inspired by the electrostatic and H-bonding interactions observed in the second sphere of the [NiFe]-CODH enzyme, researchers have extensively explored these interactions to regulate proton transfer, stabilize intermediates, and ultimately improve the performance of catalytic CO2 reduction. In this work, a series of cobalt(II) tetraphenylporphyrins with varying numbers of redox-active nitro groups were synthesized and evaluated as CO2 reduction electrocatalysts. Analyses of the redox properties of these complexes revealed a consistent relationship between the number of nitro groups and the corresponding accepted electron number of the ligand at -1.59 V vs. Fc+/0. Among the catalysts tested, TNPPCo with four nitro groups exhibited the most efficient catalytic activity with a turnover frequency of 4.9 × 104 s-1 and a catalytic onset potential 820 mV more positive than that of the parent TPPCo. Furthermore, the turnover frequencies of the catalysts increased with a higher number of nitro groups. These results demonstrate the promising design strategy of incorporating multielectron redox-active ligands into CO2 reduction catalysts to enhance catalytic performance.

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen-Bond Effects of Second-Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins

Microenvironments tailored by multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups can enhance catalytic performance at primary metal active sites in natural systems. Here, we capture this biological concept in synthetic systems by developing a family of iron porphyrins decorated with imidazolium (im) pendants for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR), which promotes multiple synergistic effects to enhance CO2 RR and enables the disentangling of second-sphere contributions that stem from each type of interaction. Fe-ortho-im(H), which poises imidazolium units featuring both positive charge and hydrogen-bond capabilities proximal to the active iron center, increases CO2 binding affinity by 25-fold and CO2 RR activity by 2000-fold relative to the parent Fe tetraphenylporphyrin (Fe-TPP). Comparison with monofunctional analogs reveals that through-space charge effects have a greater impact on catalytic CO2 RR performance compared to hydrogen bonding in this context.

Recent developments in the synthesis of bio-inspired iron porphyrins for small molecule activation

Nature utilizes a diverse set of tetrapyrrole-based macrocycles (referred to as porphyrinoids) for catalyzing various biological processes. Investigation of the differences in electronic structure and reactivity in these reactions have revealed striking differences that lead to diverse reactivity from, apparently, similar looking active sites. Therefore, the role of the different heme cofactors as well as the distal superstructure in the proteins is important to understand. This article summarizes the role of a few synthetic metallo-porphyrinoids towards catalyzing several small molecule activation reactions, such as the ORR, NiRR, CO₂RR, etc. The major focus of the article is to enlighten the synthetic routes to the well-decorated active-site mimic in a tailor-made fashion pursuing a retrosynthetic approach, learning from the biosynthesis of the cofactors. Techniques and the role of the second-sphere residues on the reaction rate, selectivity, etc. are incorporated emulating the basic amino acid residues fencing the active sites. These bioinspired mimics play an important role towards understanding the role of the prosthetic groups as well as the basic residues towards any reaction occurring in Nature.

Redox behavior of iridium octaethylporphycene and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The electrochemical properties of [Formula: see text]-octaethylporphycene iridium complex (Ir-OEPo) were determined. Based on the electro-spectro measurement results, the reduction of Ir-OEPo did not occur at the central metal but at the ligand, while the reduction of [Formula: see text]-octaethylporphyrin iridium complex (Ir-OEPor) occurred at the central iridium. A catalytic current was observed during the cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) under a reductive condition, indicating the catalytic reactivity of Ir-OEPo for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). By constant potential electrolysis, hydrogen gas was detected by gas chromatography (GC) and the catalytic reactivity of Ir-OEPo was confirmed. The HER mechanism via ligand reduction of macrocyclic aromatic complexes could be one of the concepts for the development of new catalysts.

First-row transition metal porphyrins for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution — a SPP/JPP Young Investigator Award paper

A series of first-row transition metal complexes of tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (1), denoted as 1-M (M [Formula: see text] Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn), were synthesized and examined as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). All these transition metal porphyrins were shown to be active for HER in acetonitrile using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as the proton source. The molecular nature and the stability of these metal porphyrins when functioning as HER catalysts were confirmed, and all catalysts gave Faradaic efficiency of >97% for H2 generation during bulk electrolysis. Importantly, by using 1-Cu, a remarkably high turnover frequency (TOF) of 48500 s[Formula: see text] 1-Cu the most efficient among this series of metal porphyrin catalysts. This TOF value also represents one of the highest values reported in the literature. In addition, electrochemical analysis demonstrated that catalytic HER mechanisms with these 1-M complexes are different. These results show that with the same porphyrin ligand, the change of metal ions will have significant impact on both catalytic efficiency and mechanism. This work for the first time provides direct comparison of electrocatalytic HER features of transition metal complexes of tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin under identical conditions, and will be valuable for future design and development of more efficient HER electrocatalysts of this series.

Enhanced Molecular CO2 Electroreduction Enabled by a Flexible Hydrophilic Channel for Relay Proton Shuttling

The effects of primary and second coordination spheres on molecular electrocatalysis have been extensively studied, yet investigations of third functional spheres are rarely reported. Here, an electrocatalyst (ZnPEG8T) was developed with a hydrophilic channel as a third functional sphere that facilitates relay proton shuttling to the primary and second coordination spheres for enhanced catalytic CO₂ reduction. Using foot-of-the-wave analysis, the ZnPEG8T catalyst displayed CO₂ -to-CO activity (TOF_max ) thirty times greater than that of the benchmark catalyst without a third functional sphere. A kinetic isotopic effect (KIE) study, in conjunction with voltammetry and UV/Vis spectroscopy, uncovered that the rate-limiting step was not the protonation step of the metallocarboxylate intermediate, as observed in many other molecular CO₂ reduction electrocatalysts, but rather the replenishment of protons in the proton-shuttling channel. Controlled-potential electrolysis using ZnPEG8T displayed a faradaic efficiency of 100 % for CO₂ -to-CO conversion at -2.4 V vs. Fc/Fc⁺ . A Tafel plot was also generated for a comparison to other reported molecular catalysts. This report validates a strategy for incorporating higher functional spheres for enhanced catalytic efficiency in proton-coupled electron-transfer reactions.
