Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol in the Aqueous Phase by TiO 2 ‐Based Photocatalysts: A Review

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Derived from Covalent Triazine Framework for Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

The catalytic oxidation of alcohols is an important transformation in the chemical industry. Carbon materials with a large surface area and N doping show great promise as metal-free catalysts for the reaction. In this study, a rich N-containing covalent triazine framework polymerized by cyanuric chloride and p-phenylenediamine was used to synthesize N-doped porous carbon with the assistance of a pore-forming agent-NaCl. First, the mass ratio of the polymer/NaCl was optimized to 1:9. Then, the influence of the pyrolysis temperatures (700-1000 °C) on the materials was studied in detail. It was found that the carbon materials were gradually exfoliated by molten salt at high temperatures. XRD and Raman characterizations showed them with a certain graphitization. The optimal doped carbon CNN-1-9-900 achieved the highest surface area of 199.03 m2g-1 with the largest pore volume of 0.29 cm3g-1. Furthermore, it had a high N content of 9.9 at% with the highest relative proportion of pyridinic/graphitic N. Due to the synergistic effect between the surface area and pyridinic/graphitic N, CNN-1-9-900 showed the best performance for benzyl alcohol oxidation with TBHP at moderate conditions, and the process also worked for its derivatives.

Natural Volcanic Material as a Sustainable Photocatalytic Material for Pollutant Degradation under Solar Irradiation

Recently, photocatalysis has been demonstrated as a solid approach for efficient wastewater cleaning. Using natural materials as photocatalysts means a promising solution to develop green catalysts for environmental purposes. This work aimed to study the suitability of a natural volcanic material (La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain) as a photocatalytic material for the degradation of pollutants in wastewater with solar energy. After analysing the properties of the natural material (BET surface 0.188 m²/g and band-gap of 3 eV), the photocatalytic activity was evaluated at laboratory and pilot plant scale for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in water (50 mg L⁻¹), at 20 °C, during a period of 4 h, under UV/Vis light and solar irradiation. Photolytic and adsorption studies were developed to distinguish the photocatalytic contribution to the wastewater decontamination process by photocatalysis. Our results enable us to determine the viability of black sand as a photocatalytic material activated by solar irradiation (photodegradation of MB up to 100% by using solar energy), developing a natural and green photocatalytic system with significantly high potential for application in a sustainable wastewater cleaning process.

A Novel Pd-P Nano-Alloy Supported on Functionalized Silica for Catalytic Aerobic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

Catalytic aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BnOH) to benzaldehyde (PhCHO) over supported noble metal catalysts has grabbed the attention of researchers due to the critical role of PhCHO in numerous industrial syntheses. In the present study, a novel catalyst, Pd-P alloy supported on aminopropyl-functionalized mesoporous silica (NH2-SiO2), was prepared through in situ reduction and characterized by BET-BJH analysis, SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TG-DTA, and XPS. Chemical properties and catalytic performance of Pd-P/NH2-SiO2 were compared with those of Pd° nanoparticles (NPs) deposited on the same support. Over Pd-P/NH2-SiO2, the BnOH conversion to PhCHO was much higher than over Pd°/NH2-SiO2, and significantly influenced by the nature of solvent, reaching 57% in toluene at 111 °C, with 63% selectivity. Using pure oxygen as an oxidant in the same conditions, the BnOH conversion increased up to 78%, with 66% selectivity. The role of phosphorous in improving the activity may consist of the strong interaction with Pd that favours metal dispersion and lowers Pd electron density.
