Abstract
Understanding the basic solubilization of fish myofibrillar proteins (MPs) in common monovalent chloride solutions is crucial for muscle food processing. In this study, the differential proteomic profiles of MPs during extraction and solubilization in NaCl and KCl solutions were investigated by using advanced four-dimensional data-independent acquisition (4D DIA) quantitative proteomics for the first time. Compared to routine biochemical analysis, this could provide insights into the solubilization of muscle proteins. We ensure the consistency of the effective ionic strength of NaCl and KCl buffers by adjusting the conductivity. The results showed that NaCl extractor mainly facilitated the solubilization of cytoskeletal proteins, biochemical enzymes, and stromal proteins compared to KCl, such as tubulin, myosin-9, collagen, plectin, protein phosphatase, and cathepsin D. However, no significant difference was observed in the extraction of major sarcomeric proteins, including myosin, actin, troponin C, myosin-binding protein C, M-Protein, α-actinin-3, and tropomyosin.

Abstract
The influence of different brine temperatures (5, 15 and 25 °C) and ultrasound on the salt gain (SG) and water gain (WG) kinetics of haddock cubes during vacuum impregnation (VI) process was evaluated. Samples were taken from salt solution (4 g NaCl/ 100 g solution) after 0, 20, 40, 60, 100, 140 and 180 min of brining process for salt and moisture analysis. Ultrasound assisted VI and increasing temperature in the salt solution increased (P < 0.05) the salt content, and SG value in the haddock cubes. Furthermore, ultrasound assisted VI enhanced the water diffusion into the cubes and resulted in an increase in WG value. The ultrasound process increased the salt effective diffusion coefficient (Ds) and the highest Ds was found at 25 °C brine temperature. Azuara, Diffusive, Peleg, Weibull, Z and L models were tested to predicting SG and WG kinetics and Azuara was the best model during brining process of haddock cubes.

Abstract
Salt (NaCl) is an essential nutrient for horses because their diet is low in sodium and they lose salt in sweat. Given the many types of salt block available, 342 horse owners were surveyed to see what type they offered their horses. The owners most often offered plain(30%) mineralized (29%) or Himalayan salt blocks. Next, adult mares were given two choice preference tests between plain (white) and mineralized (red) salt blocks, between mineralized and selenium (green) blocks, between plain and selenium, between Himalayan (pink) and plain and between Himalayan and selenium salt blocks. The horses preferred plain salt to Himalayan salt, but showed no preference between the other combinations.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a chemically reactive chemical substance containing oxygen and a natural by-product of normal oxygen metabolism. Excessive ROS affect the growth process of crops, which will lead to the decrease of yield. Nitrogen, as a critical nutrient element in plants and plays a vital role in plant growth and crop production. Nitrate is the primary nitrogen source available to plants in agricultural soil and various natural environments. However, the molecular mechanism of ROS-nitrate crosstalk is still unclear. In this study, we used the foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) as the material to figure it out. Here, we show that excessive NaCl inhibits nitrate-promoted plant growth and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). NaCl induces ROS accumulation in roots, and ROS inhibits nitrate-induced gene expression in a short time. Surprisingly, low concentration ROS slight promotes and high concentration of ROS inhibits foxtail millet growth under long-term H2O2 treatment. These results may open a new perspective for further exploration of ROS-nitrate signaling pathway in plants.

Abstract
Salt is frequently introduced in ecosystems, where it acts as a pollutant. This study examined how changes in salinity affect the survival and development of zebrafish from the two-cell to the blastocyst stage and from the blastocyst to the larval stage. Control zebrafish embryos were cultured in E3 medium containing 5 mM Sodium Chloride (NaCl), 0.17 mM Potassium Chloride (KCL), 0.33 mM Calcium Chloride (CaCl2), and 0.33 mM Magnesium Sulfade (MgSO4). Experiments were conducted using increasing concentrations of each individual salt at 5×, 10×, 50×, and 100× the concentration found in E3 medium. KCL, CaCl2, and MgSO4 did not result in lethal abnormalities and did not affect early embryo growth at any of the concentrations tested. Concentrations of 50× and 100× NaCl caused embryonic death in both stages of development. Concentrations of 5× and 10× NaCl resulted in uninflated swim bladders in 12% and 65% of larvae, compared to 4.2% of controls, and caused 1654 and 2628 genes to be differentially expressed in blastocysts, respectively. The ATM signaling pathway was affected, and the Sonic Hedgehog pathway genes Shh and Ptc1 implicated in swim bladder development were downregulated. Our findings suggest that increased NaCl concentrations may alter gene expression and cause developmental abnormalities in animals found in affected ecosystems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive NaCl intake in liquid and semi-solid food (e.g. soup, hot pot base, sauce) poses a high risk to human health, and reducing NaCl intake is a major concern for global health. RESULTS Using the generalized Labeled Magnitude Scale (gLMS) method, the study verified the possibility of sodium reduction through oil addition. The compromised acceptance threshold (CAT) and hedonic rejection threshold (HRT) were determined. The gLMS results showed that the saltiness intensity of samples containing 0.36% NaCl and 2.29% sunflower seed oil was significantly higher than that of samples containing only 0.36% NaCl (P < 0.05). CAT and HRT results indicated that by adding 3.59% sunflower oil, the NaCl content could be reduced to a minimum of 0.14% without causing sensory rejection in bone broth samples. The quantitative descriptive analysis method was used to determine the effects of NaCl and oil concentrations on the sensory attributes of bone broth samples. Furthermore, it was used to analyze the consumer acceptability drivers in combination with the hedonic scale to optimize the formulation of reduced-salt bone broth products. Notably, sample E (0.36% NaCl, 2.29% fat) not only had a significant salt reduction effect with a 20% decrease in NaCl, but also had improved overall acceptability. CONCLUSION This study provides theoretical guidance for designing salt-reduction cuisine within the catering and food industries, including bone broth and hot pot bases. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Excess dietary salt (NaCl) intake is strongly correlated with cardiovascular disease and is a major contributing factor to the pathogenesis of hypertension. NaCl-sensitive hypertension is a multisystem disorder that involves renal dysfunction, vascular abnormalities, and neurogenically-mediated increases in peripheral resistance. Despite a major research focus on organ systems and these effector mechanisms causing NaCl-induced increases in arterial blood pressure, relatively less research has been directed at elucidating how NaCl is sensed by various tissues to elicit these downstream effects. The purpose of this review is to discuss how the brain, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract sense NaCl including key cell types, the role of NaCl versus osmolality, and the underlying molecular and electrochemical mechanisms.

Abstract
Fabricating an efficient electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) isthe most challenging task for overall water splitting. Herein, we utilized the confinement effect of molten sodium chloride (NaCl) to controllably prepare hollow Co/Co3O4 nanoparticles embedded into nitrogen-doped carbon (H-Co/Co3O4-NC). Experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the interfacial interaction within Co/Co3O4 heterostructure played a pivotal role in modulating the electronic structure and facilitating the electron transfer. Meanwhile, the superiority of hollow nanostructure could promote the mesoscale mass diffusion. Remarkably, the as-prepared H-Co/Co3O4-NC catalyst achieved the low overpotentials of 316 mV and 252 mV towards OER and HER, respectively, which delivered overall water splitting with the potential of 1.76 V at a current density of 10 mA cm-2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) is characterized by severe systemic edema without specific treatment, resulting in a high mortality rate. This study investigated whether there is organ edema in neonatal CLS patients and specific treatment strategies to improve patient prognosis. METHODS Thirty-seven newborns diagnosed with CLS were included in this study. (1) Routine point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) was used to identify whether the patients had visceral edema or fluid collection. (2) All patients were treated with 3% NaCl intravenously, and the clinical manifestations, laboratory indices and outcomes were compared before and after treatment. RESULTS (1) Diffuse severe edema was found in 92.0% of the patients. (2) The POCUS examination revealed that CLS patients exhibited significant visceral edema in addition to diffuse severe edema, which included pulmonary edema in 67.6%, cerebral edema in 37.8%, severe intestinal edema in 24.3%, severe myocardial edema in 8.1%, pericardial effusion in 5.4%, pleural effusion in 29.7% and peritoneal effusion in 18.9%. Two patients (5.45%) had only myocardial edema without other manifestations. (3) Before and after the intravenous injection of 3% NaCl, there were no significant differences in the serum sodium or potassium levels of CLS patients, while the hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were significantly lower after treatment (p < 0.01). Her plasma ALB concentration and arterial pressure returned to normal levels after the treatment was completed. (4) All the patients survived, and no side effects or complications were observed during or after treatment with 3% NaCl. CONCLUSIONS (1) In addition to diffuse severe edema, visceral edema and effusion are common and important clinical manifestations of neonatal CLS and need to be detected by routine POCUS. (2) The intravenous injection of 3% NaCl is a safe, effective and specific treatment strategy for neonatal CLS, with a survival rate of 100% and no adverse effects.

Abstract
The excess of salts in soils causes stress in most plants, except for some halophytes that can tolerate higher levels of salinity. The excess of Na+ generates an ionic imbalance, reducing the K+ content and altering cellular metabolism, thus impacting in plant growth and development. Additionally, salinity in soil induces water stress due to osmotic effects and increments the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that affect the cellular structure, damaging membranes and proteins, and altering the electrochemical potential of H+, which directly affects nutrient absorption by membrane transporters. However, plants possess mechanisms to overcome the toxicity of the sodium ions, such as internalization into the vacuole or exclusion from the cell, synthesis of enzymes or protective compounds against ROS, and the synthesis of metabolites that help to regulate the osmotic potential of plants. Physiologic and molecular mechanisms of salinity tolerance in plants will be addressed in this review. Furthermore, a revision of strategies taken by researchers to confer salt stress tolerance on agriculturally important species are discussed. These strategies include conventional breeding and genetic engineering as transgenesis and genome editing by CRISPR/Cas9.

Abstract
Microalgae are increasingly recognized as promising organisms for bioremediation of organic pollutants. This study investigates the potential of enhancing the bioremediation efficiency of pyrene (PYR), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), through NaCl induced physiological and biochemical alterations in two microalgae species, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus acutus. Our findings reveal significant improvement in PYR removal when these microalgae were cultivated in the presence of 0.1% NaCl where PYR removal increased from 54 to 74% for C. vulgaris and from 26 to 75% for S. acutus. However, it was observed that NaCl induced stress had varying effects on the two species. While C. vulgaris exhibited increased PYR removal, it experienced reduced growth and biomass production, as well as lower photosynthetic efficiency when exposed to PYR and PYR + NaCl. In contrast, S. acutus displayed better growth and biomass accumulation under PYR + NaCl conditions, making it a more efficient candidate for enhancing PYR bioremediation in the presence of NaCl. In addition to assessing growth and biochemical content, we also investigated stress biomarkers, such as lipid peroxidation, polyphenol and proline contents. These findings suggest that S. acutus holds promise as an alternative microalgae species for PYR removal in the presence of NaCl, offering potential advantages in terms of bioremediation efficiency and ecological sustainability. This study highlights the importance of understanding the physiological and biochemical responses of microalgae to environmental stressors, which can be harnessed to optimize bioremediation strategies for the removal of organic pollutants like PYR.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) plays an important role in mitigating salt stress in tree species. We investigate the genotypic differences in the uptake of ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) and the importance for salt tolerance in two contrasting poplars, salt-tolerant Populus euphratica Oliv. and salt-sensitive P. simonii × (P. pyramidalis ×Salix matsudana) (P. popularis cv. 35-44, P. popularis). Total N content, growth and photosynthesis were significantly reduced in P. popularis after 7 days of exposure to NaCl (100 mM) supplied with 1 mM NH4+ and 1 mM NO3-, while the salt effects were not pronounced in P. euphratica. The 15NH4+ trace and root flux profiles showed that salt-stressed poplars retained ammonium uptake, which was related to the upregulation of ammonium transporters (AMTs) in roots, as two of the four AMTs tested significantly increased in salt-stressed P. euphratica (i.e., AMT1.2, 2.1) and P. popularis (i.e., AMT1.1, 1.6). It should be noted that P. euphratica differs from salt-sensitive poplar in the maintenance of NO3- under salinity. 15NO3- tracing and root flux profiles showed that P. euphratica maintained nitrate uptake and transport, while the capacity to uptake NO3- was limited in salt-sensitive P. popularis. Salt increased the transcription of nitrate transporters (NRTs), NRT1.1, 1.2, 2.4, 3.1, in P. euphratica, while P. popularis showed a decrease in the transcripts of NRT1.1, 2.4, 3.1 after 7 days of salt stress. Furthermore, salt-stimulated transcription of plasmalemma H+-ATPases (HAs), HA2, HA4 and HA11 contributed to H+-pump activation and NO3- uptake in P. euphratica. However, salt stimulation of HAs was less pronounced in P. popularis, where a decrease in HA2 transcripts was observed in the stressed roots. We conclude that the salinity-decreased transcripts of NRTs and HAs reduced the ability to uptake NO3- in P. popularis, resulting in limited nitrogen supply. In comparison, P. euphratica maintains NH4+ and NO3- supply, mitigating the negative effects of salt stress.

Abstract
Trichoderma harzianum exhibits a strong biological control effect on many important plant pathogens, such as Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea, and Meloidogyne. However, its biocontrol effectiveness is weakened or reduced under salt stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular response of T. harzianum to salt stress at the whole-genome level. Here, we present a 44.47 Mb near-complete genome assembly of the T. harzianum qt40003 strain for the first time, which was assembled de novo with 7.59 Gb Nanopore sequencing long reads (~170-fold) and 5.2 Gb Illumina short reads (~116-fold). The assembled qt40003 genome contains 12 contigs, with a contig N50 of 4.81 Mb, in which four of the 12 contigs were entirely reconstructed in a single chromosome from telomere to telomere. The qt40003 genome contains 4.27 Mb of repeat sequences and 12,238 protein-coding genes with a BUSCO completeness of 97.5%, indicating the high accuracy and completeness of our gene annotations. Genome-wide transcriptomic analysis was used to investigate gene expression changes related to salt stress in qt40003 at 0, 2% (T2), and 4% (T4) sodium chloride concentrations. A total of 2,937 and 3,527 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained under T2 and T4 conditions, respectively. GO enrichment analysis showed that the T2-treatment DEGs were highly enriched in detoxification (p < 0.001), while the T4 DEGs were mainly enriched in cell components, mostly in cellular detoxification, cell surface, and cell wall. KEGG metabolic pathway analysis showed that 91 and 173 DEGs were significantly enriched in the T2 and T4 treatments, respectively (p < 0.01), mainly in the glutathione metabolism pathway. We further experimentally analyzed the differentially expressed glutathione transferase genes in the glutathione metabolic pathway, most of which were downregulated (13/15). In addition, we screened 13 genes related to active oxygen clearance, including six upregulated and seven downregulated genes, alongside five fungal hydrophobic proteins, of which two genes were highly expressed. Our study provides high-quality genome information for the use of T. harzianum for biological control and offers significant insights into the molecular responses of T. harzianum under salt-stress conditions.

Abstract
Abiotic stresses including sodium chloride (NaCl) are known to negatively affect plant physiology and seed germination by inducing a delay in establishing seedling emergence. The monoterpene carvacrol is the major component of several aromatic plants and seems to interfere with germination and seedling growth. In this study, we investigated whether treatment with carvacrol attenuates the effects of NaCl on the germination and development of Allium cepa, where biochemical parameters were also analyzed. The results showed that the Emergency Speed Index (ESI) was near to 2.0 in the control group. The groups NaCl, carvacrol alone, and in co-treatment with NaCl exhibited an ESI below 0.8, being significantly smaller when compared to the control. NaCl + carvacrol significantly inhibited seed emergence in relation to the NaCl group. Only the content of malondialdehyde was significantly altered by NaCl.

Abstract
Sodium chloride (NaCl) confers a unique flavor and quality in meat products, however, due to growing concerns about the adverse effects of excessive NaCl consumption, how to reduce NaCl content while ensuring quality and safety has become a research hotspot in this field. This review mainly discusses the role of NaCl in dry-cured meat, as well as novel salt-reducing substances that can substitute for the effects of NaCl to achieve sodium reduction objectives. New technologies, such as vacuum curing, ultrahigh pressure curing, ultrasonic curing, pulsed electric field curing, and gamma irradiation, to facilitate the development of low-sodium products are also introduced. The majority of current salt reduction technologies function to enhance salt diffusion and decrease curing time, resulting in a decrease in NaCl content. Notably, future studies should focus on implementing multiple strategies to compensate for the deficiencies in flavor and safety caused by NaCl reduction.

Abstract
Objectives: The high-salt diet (HSD) has been associated with cognitive dysfunction by attacking the cerebral microvasculature, through an adaptive response, initiated in the intestine and mediated by Th17 cells. In the animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS), experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), it has been described that NaCl causes an increase in T cell infiltration in the central nervous system. NaCl also promotes macrophage response and Th17 cell differentiation, worsening the course of the disease. HSD may trigger an activation of the immune system and enhance inflammation. However, certain studies not only do not support this possibility, but support the opposite, as the effect of salt on immune cells may not necessarily be pathogenic. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of an over intake of salt in rats with EAE, based on the clinical course, oxidative stress, markers of inflammation and the gut dysbiosis.Methods: 15 Dark Agouti rats were used, which were divided into control group, EAE group and EAE + NaCl group. Daily 0.027 g of NaCl dissolved in 300 μl of H2O was administered through a nasogastric tube for 51 days.Results: NaCl administration produced an improvement in clinical status and a decrease in biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and dysbiosis.Conclusion: The underlying mechanism by which NaCl causes these effects could involve the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which is blocked by high doses of salt.

Abstract
Our goal was to investigate the effects of various conditions of media (NaCl, sucrose, pH, and temperature) on the steady and dynamic shear rheological properties of a concentrated ternary gum mixture system (1.0 wt%) containing xanthan gum (XG), guar gum (GG), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Regardless of the media conditions, all gum mixtures exhibited a high shear-thinning behavior with a low flow behavior index (<0.30). NaCl addition resulted in a decrease in the consistency index (K, 32.8-16.1 Pa·sn) and apparent viscosity at 50 s-1 (ηa,50, 1.00-0.75 Pa·s), as well as the elastic modulus (G') and viscous modulus (G″) due to the charge screening effect. Similar result was observed with an increase in acidity of media. The presence of sucrose also induced the decrease in the ηa,50, K, G', and G″ values of the ternary gum, but tan δ (G″/G') decreased, indicative of higher weak gel-like properties. No effect of NaCl or sucrose addition on the temperature dependence of G' values was observed, whereas pH adjustment was impacted. These results demonstrated that the presence of co-solute, the acidity of media, and temperature influenced the rheological properties of ternary gum, and in particular acid condition gave a great impact.

Abstract
Deepwater pink shrimp (Parapenaus longirostris) has a significantly high catch yield and is a highly important food source for human nutrition in terms of its nutritional value. The reduction of salt content in seafood products while preserving taste poses a significant challenge. The aim of this study is to reduce the NaCl ratio used in the shrimp marination process by substituting it with KCl and masking the resulting bitterness from KCl using natural flavor enhancers, such as yeast extracts. The marinated shrimp were prepared using 50% KCl instead of 50% NaCl. In order to mask the bitter taste caused by KCl and enhance the flavor, two different types of yeast extracts obtained from Saccharomyces cerevisiae were utilized in the formulation. Nutritional composition, Na and K contents, amino acid composition, color measurement, bacteriological quality, pH changes, and sensory evaluations were conducted to assess the impact of salt reduction and yeast extracts on the sensory, chemical, and physical attributes of the products. L-glutamic acid, L-alanine, L-aspartic acid, L-leucine, L-valine, and L-lysine were found to be higher in samples with Levex Terra yeast extract. Despite a 50% reduction in NaCl content, the addition of yeast extract led to an increase in the umami taste due to the elevation of amino acids present. Yeast extracts can offer a promising solution for enhancing the sensory qualities of seafood products with reduced salt content by conducting more detailed sensory development examinations.

Abstract
Chloride (Cl-) is considered a crucial nutrient for plant growth, but it can be a challenge under saline conditions. Excessive accumulation of Cl- in leaves can cause toxicity. Chloride channels (CLCs) are expressed in the inner membranes of plant cells and function as essential Cl- exchangers or channels. In response to salt stress in plants, CLCs play a crucial role, and CLC proteins assist in maintaining the intracellular Cl- homeostasis by sequestering Cl- into vacuoles. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the primary substance responsible for causing salt-induced phytotoxicity. However, research on plant responses to Cl- stress is comparatively rare, in contrast to that emphasizing Na+. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the plant response and tolerance to Cl- stress, specifically focusing on comparative analysis of CLC protein structures in different species. Additionally, to further gain insights into the underlying mechanisms, the study summarizes the identified CLC genes that respond to salt stress. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the response of CLCs in terrestrial plants to salt stress and their biological functions, aiming to gain further insights into the mechanisms underlying the response of CLCs in plants to salt stress.

Abstract
An adsorption experiment and a pot experiment were executed in order to explore the mechanisms by which biochar amendment in combination with reduced irrigation affects sodium and potassium uptake, root morphology, water use efficiency, and salinity tolerance of cotton plants. In the adsorption experiment, ten NaCl concentration gradients (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, and 500 mM) were set for testing isotherm adsorption of Na+ by biochar. It was found that the isotherms of Na+ adsorption by wheat straw biochar (WSP) and softwood biochar (SWP) were in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the Na+ adsorption ability of WSP (55.20 mg g-1) was superior to that of SWP (47.38 mg g-1). The pot experiment consisted three factors, viz., three biochar amendments (no biochar, WSP, and SWP), three irrigation strategies (deficit irrigation, partial root-zone drying irrigation - PRD, full irrigation), and two NaCl concentrations gradients (0 mM and 200 mM). The findings indicated that salinity stress lowered K+ concentration, root length, root surface area, and root volume (RV), but increased Na+ concentration, root average diameter, and root tissue density. However, biochar amendment decreased Na+ concentration, increased K+ concentration, and improved root morphology. In particular, the combination of WSP and PRD increased K+/Na+ ratio, RV, root weight density, root surface area density, water use efficiency, and partial factor productivity under salt stress, which can be a promising strategy to cope with drought and salinity stress in cotton production.

Abstract
The models of preserved egg yolk (PEY) and salted egg yolk both treated with or without NaCl were performed to explore the effect of NaCl on the characteristic volatile compounds (VOCs) in PEY. 1-hexanol, 2-heptanone, isoamyl acetate, etc., compounds were confirmed as the characteristic VOCs in PEY mainly induced by NaCl and the formation of 1-octanol, 2-pentylfuran, ammonia, etc., characteristic VOCs induced by NaCl may depend on the combined effect of Cu2+ and OH-. Among them, 1-hexanol and 2-heptanone were formed from linoleic acid in PS(18:0_18:2) and oleic acid in PG(22:6_18:1), respectively, through multi-omics and correlation analysis. Meanwhile, 1-octanol may originated from β-oxidation of oleic acid in PS(18:1); 2-pentylfuran and ammonia maybe derived from the derivative of aspartate and the degradation of l-methionine, respectively. Moreover, this study provides a new insight to parse the influence of NaCl with/without other exogenous factors on the formation of VOCs in food products.

Abstract
Empirical evidence indicates that NaCl can improve the quality of mung bean starch sheet jelly (MBSS) when properly incorporated. In this study, by comparison with a sample without NaCl, the influences of NaCl (1.5-8%, w/w) on the physicochemical and structural properties of mung bean starch (MBS) and the quality of MBSS were investigated. MBS with added NaCl had greater gelatinization temperature and pasting parameters but lower gelatinization enthalpy than native MBS. With the addition of NaCl, the drying rate of MBSS first accelerated and then declined in the oven-drying process. The addition of NaCl improved the cooking properties of MBSS but decreased the hardness of cooked MBSS. Rheological results implied that the linear viscoelastic region of cooked MBSS decreased with the NaCl addition, and the storage modulus and tan δ were more frequency-dependent than the loss modulus of cooked MBSS. The addition of NaCl gradually increased the toughness of dried MBSS and the overall acceptability of cooked MBSS. Furthermore, NaCl decreased the structure order degree of starch in MBSS. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the quality of MBSS had a significant correlation with the molecular and lamellar order of starch. Overall, NaCl could improve the quality of MBSS by regulating the thermal, gelatinizing, and structural properties of MBS.

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of NaCl on the physical properties of cornstarch-methyl cellulose (CS-MC) mixtures and their gels prepared with rice flour in a model system. Opposite trends were observed, showing that NaCl led to decreased viscosity of the CS-MC mixtures (liquid-based), whereas a more stable and robust structure was observed for the rice-flour-added gels (solid-based) with the addition of NaCl. The interference of NaCl with the CS-MS blend's ability to form a stable gel network resulted in a thinner consistency, as the molecules of the CS-MS blend may not bind together as effectively. On the contrary, NaCl showed the potential to enhance the protein network within CS-MC gels prepared with rice flour, thereby contributing to an augmentation in the stability or firmness of the cooked gels. Careful utilization of NaCl to optimize the physical properties of the CS-MC blends, as well as the gels based on rice flour, should be performed.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the response of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium to food preservative-related stresses, such as lactic acid and sodium chloride (NaCl). S. Typhimurium cells were exposed to 1 µg/mL of ciprofloxacin (CIP), 0.2% lactic acid (LA), 6% NaCl, CIP followed by LA (CIP-LA), and CIP followed by NaCl (CIP-NaCl). The untreated S. Typhimurium cells were the control (CON). All treatments were as follows: CON, CIP, LA, NaCl, CIP-LA, and CIP-NaCl. The phenotypic heterogeneity was evaluated by measuring the antimicrobial susceptibility, bacterial fluctuation, cell injury, persistence, and cross-resistance. The CIP, CIP-LA, and CIP-NaCl groups were highly resistant to ciprofloxacin, showing MIC values of 0.70, 0.59, and 0.54 µg/mL, respectively, compared to the CON group (0.014 µg/mL). The susceptibility to lactic acid was not changed after exposure to NaCl, while that to NaCl was decreased after exposure to NaCl. The Eagle phenomenon was observed in the CIP, CIP-LA, and CIP-NaCl groups, showing Eagle effect concentrations (EECs) of more than 8 µg/mL. No changes in the MBCs of lactic acid and NaCl were observed in the CIP, LA, and CIP-LA groups, and the EECs of lactic acid and NaCl were not detected in all treatments. The bacterial fluctuation rates of the CIP-LA and CIP-NaCl groups were considerably increased to 33% and 41%, respectively, corresponding to the injured cell proportions of 82% and 89%. CIP-NaCl induced persister cells as high as 2 log cfu/mL. The LA and NaCl treatments decreased the fitness cost. The CIP-NaCl treatment showed positive cross-resistance to erythromycin (ERY) and tetracycline (TET), while the LA and NaCl treatments were collaterally susceptible to chloramphenicol (CHL), ciprofloxacin (CIP), piperacillin (PIP), and TET. The results provide new insight into the fate of antibiotic-resistant S. Typhimurium during food processing and preservation.

Abstract
The study investigated the adaptability of Moringa oleifera to saline conditions, focusing on its hormesis behavior. It also examined how various plant growth regulators affected growth, physiological parameters, and bioactive compounds of moringa. In the first phase, different NaCl stress levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mM) were applied. Notably, significant stimulation was observed at 100 mM stress for growth, total phenolics, total flavonoids and total chlorophyll content while 150 mM stress had a marked inhibitory effect, with survival decreasing at 200 and 250 mM NaCl levels. A 38% reduction in root attributes and shoot length, along with a 55% decrease in leaf score, was observed at 150 mM stress. Total phenolics showed a positive correlation with growth attributes. In the second phase, moringa plants grown under 50, 100, and 150 mM NaCl stress were treated with various plant growth regulators, including cytokinin (50 mg L-1), thiourea (5 mM), bezyl amino purine (BAP @50 mg L-1), salicylic acid (50 mg L-1), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2@120 μM), or ascorbic acid (50 mg L-1) to mitigate adverse effects of salinity. Cytokinin, BAP, and salicylic acid applications improved salinity tolerance, enhancing enzymatic, and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and the abundance of kaempferol, quercetin, hydroxybenzoic, and hydroxycinnamic acids. Pearson correlation and principal component analysis manifested relationships among growth parameters, antioxidant activities, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. This study provides new insights into hormesis management for moringa plants and the influence of plant growth regulators on flavonoids and phenolic acid levels in moringa leaves under saline conditions.

Abstract
Hosts and parasites are embedded in communities where species richness and composition can influence disease outcomes (diversity-disease relationships). The direction and magnitude of diversity-disease relationships are influenced by variation in competence (ability to support and transmit infections) of hosts in a community. However, host susceptibility to parasites, which mediates host competence, is not static and is influenced by environmental factors, including pollutants. Despite the role that pollutants can play in augmenting host susceptibility, how pollutants influence diversity-disease dynamics is not well understood. Using an amphibian-trematode model, we tested how NaCl influences diversity-disease dynamics. We predicted that NaCl exposure can alter relative susceptibility of host species to trematodes, leading to cascading effects on the diversity-disease relationship. To test these predictions, we exposed hosts to benign or NaCl environments and generated communities that differed in number and composition of host species. We exposed these communities to trematodes and measured disease outcomes at the community (total infections across all hosts within a community) and species levels (average number of infections per host species within a community). Host species differed in their relative susceptibility to trematodes when exposed to NaCl. Consequently, at the community level (total infections across all hosts within a community), we only detected diversity-disease relationships (dilution effects) in communities where hosts were exposed to NaCl. At the species level, disease outcomes (average number of infections/species) and whether multi-species communities supported lower number of infections relative to single-species communities depended on community composition. Notably, however, as with overall community infection, diversity-disease relationships only emerged when hosts were exposed to NaCl. Synthesis. Pollutants are ubiquitous in nature and can influence disease dynamics across a number of host-parasite systems. Here, we show that NaCl exposure can alter the relative susceptibility of host species to parasites, influencing the relationship between biodiversity and disease at both community and species levels. Collectively, our study contributes to the limited knowledge surrounding environmental mediators of host susceptibility and their influence on diversity-disease dynamics.

Abstract
Atmospheric pressure plasmas can serve as double phase reactors to produce plasma activated water for water treatment. However, the physical-chemical processes involving plasma-supplied atomic oxygen and reactive oxygen species in an aqueous solution remain unclear. In this work, quantum mechanics (QM)/molecular mechanics (MM) molecular dynamics simulations (MDs) have been performed to directly observe the chemical reactions occurring between atomic oxygen and a NaCl solution at the gas-liquid interface using a model containing 10,800 atoms. During simulations, the atoms in the QM and MM Parts are dynamically adjusted. To examine the effects of local microenvironments on the chemical processes, atomic oxygen is used as a chemical probe to scan the gas-liquid interface. The excited atomic oxygen reacts with water molecules and Cl- ions to produce H2O2, OH, HOCl, ClO-, and HO2-/H3O+ species. The ground-state atomic oxygen is significantly more stable than the excited atomic oxygen, although it can react with water molecules to produce OH radicals. However, the branch ratio of ClO- computed for triplet atomic oxygen is significantly larger than that determined for singlet atomic oxygen. This study can help achieve a better understanding of the fundamental chemical processes during plasma-treated solution experiments and promotes advances in applications of QM/MM calculations at the gas-liquid interface.

Abstract
Using Meyerozyma guilliermondii YB4, which was isolated and screened from southern Sichuan pickles in the laboratory, as the experimental group, we investigated the changes in growth, total ester content, and volatile flavor substances of M. guilliermondii YB4 under different NaCl concentrations. The growth of M. guilliermondii YB4 was found to be inhibited by NaCl, and the degree of inhibition increased at higher NaCl concentrations. Additionally, the total ester content of the control group (CK) was significantly lower compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). The application of NaCl also resulted in distinct changes in the volatile profile of YB4, as evidenced by E-nose results. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) were employed to analyze the volatile compounds. A total of 148 and 86 volatiles were detected and identified using GC-MS and GC-IMS, respectively. Differential volatiles among the various NaCl concentrations in YB4 were determined by a variable importance in projection (VIP) analysis in partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). These differentially expressed volatiles were further confirmed by their relative odor activity value (ROAV) and odor description. Ten key contributing volatiles were identified, including ethanol, 1-pentanol, nonanal, octanal, isoamyl acetate, palmitic acid ethyl ester, acrolein, ethyl isobutanoate, prop-1-ene-3,3'-thiobis, and 2-acetylpyrazine. This study provides insights into the specificities and contributions of volatiles in YB4 under different NaCl concentrations. These findings offer valuable information for the development of aroma-producing yeast agents and the subsequent enhancement in the flavor of southern Sichuan pickles.

Abstract
To investigate the change of ionic strength on the gel characteristics during the processing of mung bean protein-based foods, the effects of NaCl and CaCl2 at different concentrations (0-0.005 g/mL) on the properties of mung bean protein (MBP) and wheat gluten (WG) composite protein gel were studied. The results showed that low concentration (0.001-0.002 g/mL) could significantly improve the water holding capacity (WHC), storage modulus (G') and texture properties of composite protein gel (MBP/WG), while the surface hydrophobicity (H0) and solubility were significantly decreased (P < 0.05). With the increase of ion concentration, the secondary structures of MBP/WG shifted from α-helix to β-sheet, and the fluorescence spectra also showed fluorescence quenching phenomenon. By analyzing the intermolecular forces of MBP/WG, it was found that with the addition of salt ions, the hydrogen bonds was weakened and the electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bonds were enhanced, which in turn the aggregation behavior of MBP/WG composite protein gel was affected and larger aggregates between the proteins were formed. It could be also demonstrated that the gel network was denser due to the addition of these large aggregates, thus the gel properties of MBP/WG was improved. However, too many salt ions could disrupt the stable network structure of protein gel. This study can provide theoretical support to expand the development of new mung bean protein products.

Abstract
In a context of climate change, deciphering signaling pathways driving plant adaptation to drought, changes in water availability, and salt is key. A crossing point of these plant stresses is their impact on plant water potential (Ψ), a composite physico-chemical variable reflecting the availability of water for biological processes such as plant growth and stomatal aperture. The Ψ of plant cells is mainly driven by their turgor and osmotic pressures. Here we investigated the effect of a variety of osmotic treatments on the roots of Arabidopsis plants grown in hydroponics. We used, among others, a permeating solute as a way to differentiate variations on turgor from variations in osmotic pressure. Measurement of cortical cell turgor pressure with a cell pressure probe allowed us to monitor the intensity of the treatments and thereby preserve the cortex from plasmolysis. Transcriptome analyses at an early time point (15 min) showed specific and quantitative transcriptomic responses to both osmotic and turgor pressure variations. Our results highlight how water-related biophysical parameters can shape the transcriptome of roots under stress and provide putative candidates to explore further the early perception of water stress in plants.

Abstract
The gelation of scallop Patinopecten yessoensis male gonad hydrolysates (SMGHs) and κ-carrageenan (KC) subjected to pH (2-8, 3-9) and NaCl/KCl stimuli-response was investigated. SMGHs/KC gels subjected to a NaCl response exhibited an increasing storage modulus G'from 2028.6 to 3418.4 Pa as the pH decreased from pH 8 to 2, with corresponding T23 fluctuating from 966.40 to 365.64 ms. For the KCl-treated group, SMGHs/KC gels showed an even greater G' from 4646.7 to 10996.5 Pa, with T23 fluctuating from 622.2 to 276.98 ms as the pH decreased from 9 to 3. The improved gel strength could be ascribed to the blueshift and redshift of hydroxyl groups and amide I peaks, enhanced enthalpy and peak temperature, and gathered characteristic diffraction peaks from SMGHs, KC, NaCl, and KCl. The CLSM and cryo-SEM images further reflected that SMGHs/KC gels showed more flocculation formation and denser and more homogeneous networks with smaller pore sizes in more acidic domains, especially when subjected to the KCl response. This research gives a theoretical and methodological understanding of the construction of salt- and pH-responsive SMGHs/KC hydrogels as novel functional soft biomaterials applied in food and biological fields.

Abstract
Salt stress severely restricts plant growth and crop production, which is accompanied by accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that disturb cell redox homeostasis and oxidize redox-sensitive proteins. Eutrema salsugineum, a halophytic species closely related to Arabidopsis, shows a high level of tolerance to salinity and is increasingly used as a model plant in abiotic stress biology. To understand redox modifications and signaling pathways under salt stress, we used tandem mass tag (TMT)-based proteomics to quantify the salt-induced changes in protein redox modifications in E. salsugineum. Salt stress led to increased oxidative modification levels of 159 cysteine sites in 107 proteins, which play roles in carbohydrate and energy metabolism, transport, ROS homeostasis, cellular structure modulation, and folding and assembly. These lists of unknown redox reactive proteins in salt mustard lay the foundation for future research to understand the molecular mechanism of plant salt response. However, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is one of the most important antioxidant enzymes in plants. Our research indicates that EsGPX may be involved in regulating ROS levels and that plants with overexpressed EsGPX have much improved salt tolerance.

Abstract
Recent studies draw attention to how excessive salt (NaCl) intake induces fibrotic alterations in the peritoneum through sodium accumulation and osmotic events. The aim of our study was to better understand the underlying mechanisms. The effects of additional NaCl were investigated on human primary mesothelial cells (HPMC), human primary peritoneal fibroblasts (HPF), endothelial cells (HUVEC), immune cells (PBMC), as well as ex vivo on peritoneal tissue samples. Our results showed that a high-salt environment and the consequently increased osmolarity increase the production of inflammatory cytokines, profibrotic growth factors, and components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, including IL1B, IL6, MCP1, TGFB1, PDGFB, CTGF, Renin and Ace both in vitro and ex vivo. We also demonstrated that high salt induces mesenchymal transition by decreasing the expression of epithelial marker CDH1 and increasing the expression of mesenchymal marker ACTA2 and SNAIL1 in HPMCs, HUVECs and peritoneal samples. Furthermore, high salt increased extracellular matrix production in HPFs. We demonstrated that excess Na+ and the consequently increased osmolarity induce a comprehensive profibrotic response in the peritoneal cells, thereby facilitating the development of peritoneal fibrosis.

Abstract
Table salts with their specialty flake size, textures, flavors, and colors can be considered a gastronomy niche food already increasing in demand worldwide. Being unrefined, they can contain trace elements potentially both healthy and toxic. In this study, 12 mineral elements (Al, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn) in 10 different salts commercially available in southern Italy namely, Atlantic grey, Baule volante, Guerande, Hawaiian pink, Hawaiian black, Himalayan pink, Maldon, Mozia, Persian blue, and smoked salts were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and thermal decomposition amalgamation-atomic absorption spectrophotometry (TDA-AAS). The concentration of mineral elements was variable according to the type of salt and its geographical origin. Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Se levels were tolerable and Al, Ca, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn ranged significantly among the samples. Persian Blue and Atlantic Grey salts showed elevated levels of Fe and Zn; their intake can be helpful in some specific conditions. Nevertheless, Ni levels were high in Persian Blue and Smoked salts. Pb exceeded the maximum level in all samples. Additional monitoring analyses of mineral contents in table salts are recommended for human health.

Abstract
Aim Compare the efficacy of nebulized hypertonic saline and normal saline in the treatment of infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis. Methods This retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Pulmonology, Paediatric Clinic, Clinical Centre University of Sarajevo, covering the period from January 2015 to December 2019 and comprising 380 children aged between 1 and 12 months having bronchiolitis. One group received nebulized hypertonic saline (NHS, 3% NaCl)), and another group received nebulized normal saline (NNS, 0.9% NaCl). The control group did not receive any of these treatment options. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the treatment groups regarding length of hospital stay (LOS) and Clinical Severity Score (CSS) at admission and discharge as well as in oxygen therapy duration and antibiotic use, the duration of symptoms before hospital admission, frequency of nasal discharge, elevated temperature, dyspnoea, cough and dehydration. Conclusion The results of this study are consistent with several recent studies or meta-analyses and support the evidence against the use of NHS in hospitalized infants with mild or moderate bronchiolitis.

Abstract
Cholera, caused by pathogenic Vibrio cholerae, poses a significant public health risk through water and food transmission. Biofilm-associated V. cholerae plays a crucial role in seasonal cholera outbreaks as both a reservoir in aquatic environments and a direct source of human infection. Although VP3, a lytic phage, shows promise in eliminating planktonic V. cholerae from the aquatic environment, its effectiveness against biofilm-associated V. cholerae is limited. To address this limitation, our proposed approach aims to enhance the efficacy of VP3 in eliminating biofilm-associated V. cholerae by augmenting the availability of phage receptors on the surface of Vibrio cholerae. TolC is a receptor of VP3 and a salt efflux pump present in many bacteria. In this study, we employed NaCl as an enhancer to stimulate TolC expression and observed a significant enhancement of TolC expression in both planktonic and biofilm cells of V. cholerae. This enhancement led to improved adsorption of VP3. Importantly, our findings provide strong evidence that high salt concentrations combined with VP3 significantly improve the elimination of biofilm-associated V. cholerae. This approach offers a potential strategy to eliminate biofilm-formation bacteria by enhancing phage-host interaction.

Abstract
Legume plants rely upon multipartite interactions between rhizobia and bacterial endophytes within root nodules to facilitate plant growth. This study aimed to isolate and identify indigenous endophytic bacteria from root nodules of Sulla aculeolata L. in Northeast Morocco. Based on their tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) solubilization capacity, five endophytes were chosen for further evaluation of their plant growth traits. All isolates were hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and siderophore producers, while only BCH24 tested positive for ACC deaminase activity. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) synthesis ranged from 1.27 mgL- 1 to 2.89 mgL- 1, while soluble phosphate concentrations was between 7.99 mg L- 1 and 110.58 mg L- 1. Additionally, all the endophytes were able to produce more than two lytic enzymes. Based on the analysis of 16 S rRNA gene sequences five isolates were identified as Enterobacter sp (BCH13, BCH2), Pseudomonas sp (BCH16, BCH24), and Serratia sp (BCH10). The strains inhibited the growth of three phytopathogenic fungi, with BCH13 exhibiting the highest rate against Aspergillus ochraceus (45%), followed by BCH24 against Fusarium oxysporum (40%) and Botrytis cinerea (35%), respectively. In vivo inoculation of halotolerant strains Enterobacter hormaechei (BCH13) and Pseudomonas moraviensis (BCH16) under gnotobiotic conditions revealed that co-inoculation with Rhizobium sullae KS6 improved plant development compared to single inoculation, making it a promising eco-friendly bio-inoculant for legume Sulla flexuosa L. production.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of different environmental factors (temperature, pH, and NaCl) and food matrices (skimmed milk powder, lecithin, and sucrose) on the antibacterial activity of theaflavins (TFs) against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Salmonella paratyphi B (S. paratyphi B). TFs showed a larger diameter of inhibition zone (DIZ, 12.58 ± 0.09 mm-16.36 ± 0.12 mm) value against S. aureus than that of S. paratyphi B (12.42 ± 0.43 mm-15.81 ± 0.24 mm) at the same concentration (2-10 mg/mL). When temperatures were 25-121 °C, the DIZ of TFs against both S. aureus and S. paratyphi B was not significantly different. As pH increased from 2 to 10, their DIZ values decreased significantly from 16.78 ± 0.23 mm to 13.43 ± 0.08 mm and 15.63 ± 0.42 mm to 12.18 ± 0.14 mm, respectively. Their DIZ values increased slightly as the NaCl concentration increased from 0.2 mol/L to 0.8 mol/L, while their DIZ values decreased significantly for skimmed milk powder concentrations in the range of 20-120 g/L. Regarding the concentrations of lecithin and sucrose were 2-12 g/L and 10-60 g/L, their DIZ values showed no significant change against S. paratyphi B, but an increased trend for S. aureus. Under the above different environmental factors and food matrices, TFs maintained excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus and S. paratyphi B, providing a theoretical guidance for applying TFs as novel antibacterial additives in the food industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary sodium restriction remains a guidelines-approved lifestyle recommendation for chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. However, its efficacy in clinical outcome improvement is dubious. OBJECTIVE The study evaluated whether dietary sodium restriction in CHF reduces clinical events. METHODS We performed a systematic review of the following databases: Academic Search Ultimate, ERIC, Health Source Nursing/Academic Edition, MEDLINE, Embase, Clinicaltrials.gov and Cochrane Library (trials) to find studies analysing the impact of sodium restriction in the adult CHF population. Both observational and interventional studies were included. Exclusion criteria included i.e.: sodium consumption assessment based only on natriuresis, in-hospital interventions or mixed interventions-e.g. sodium and fluid restriction in one arm only. The review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Meta-analysis was performed for the endpoints reported in at least 3 papers. Analyses were conducted in Review Manager (RevMan) Version 5.4.1. RESULTS Initially, we screened 9175 articles. Backward snowballing revealed 1050 additional articles. Eventually, 9 papers were evaluated in the meta-analysis. All-cause mortality, HF-related hospitalizations and the composite of mortality and hospitalisation were reported in 8, 6 and 3 articles, respectively. Sodium restriction was associated with a higher risk of the composite endpoint (OR 4.12 [95% CI 1.23-13.82]) and did not significantly affect the all-cause mortality (OR 1.38 [95% CI 0.76-2.49]) or HF hospitalisation (OR 1.63 [95% CI 0.69-3.88]). CONCLUSIONS In a meta-analysis, sodium restriction in CHF patients worsened the prognosis in terms of a composite of mortality and hospitalizations and did not influence all-cause mortality and HF hospitalisation rate.

Abstract
We report on scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) topographs of individual metal phthalocyanines (MPc) on a thin salt (NaCl) film adsorbed on a gold substrate, at tunneling energies within the molecule's electronic transport gap. Theoretical models of increasing complexity are discussed. The calculations for MPcs adsorbed on a thin NaCl layer on Au(111) demonstrate that the STM pattern rotates with the molecule's orientations─in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Thus, even the STM topography obtained for energies in the transport gap represent the structure of a one atom thick molecule. It is shown that the electronic states inside the transport gap can be rather accurately approximated by linear combinations of bound molecular orbitals (MOs). The gap states include not only the frontier orbitals but also surprisingly large contributions from energetically much lower MOs. These results will be essential for understanding processes, such as exciton creation, which can be induced by electrons tunneling through the transport gap of a molecule.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overaccumulation of chloride (Cl) when plants suffer NaCl causes cell damage and death, and is regulated by Cl- channel protein (CLC). Apple roots are very sensitive to Cl-, but information associated with CLC is limited in apple crop that widely cultivated in the world. RESULTS We identified 9 CLCs from the apple genome and divided them into two subclasses. Among them, MdCLC-c1 promoter contained the largest number of cis-acting elements associated with NaCl stress, and only the MdCLC-c1, MdCLC-d, and MdCLC-g were predicted that may be Cl- antiporters or channels. Expression analysis of MdCLCs homologs in the roots of Malus hupehensis showed that most of the MhCLCs expression were response to NaCl stress, especially MhCLC-c1 expression was upregulated continuously and rapidly expressed during NaCl treatment. Therefore, we isolated MhCLC-c1 and observed it was a plasma membrane-localized protein. The MhCLC-c1 suppression significantly increased sensitivity, reactive oxygen species content, and cell death of apple calli; while MhCLC-c1 overexpression decreased sensitivity, reactive oxygen species content, and cell death of apple calli and Arabidopsis by inhibiting intracellular Cl- accumulation under NaCl stress. CONCLUSIONS The study selected and isolated a CLC-c gene MhCLC-c1 from Malus hupehensis based on identification of CLCs gene family in apple, and their homologs MhCLCs expression patterns during NaCl treatments, revealing that MhCLC-c1 alleviates NaCl-induced cell death by inhibiting intracellular Cl- accumulation. Our findings confer the comprehensive and in-depth upstanding of the mechanism that plants resist salt stress, and might also confer genetic improvement of salt tolerance in horticultural crops and the development and utilization of saline-alkali land.

Abstract
To clarify the effect of NaCl concentration (0-2.0%) on the formation of amyloid fibrils (AFs) in cooked wheat noodles, the morphology, surface hydrophobicity, secondary structure, molecular weight distribution, microstructure, and crystal structure of AFs were investigated in this paper. Fluorescence data and Congo red stain images confirmed the presence of AFs and revealed that the 0.4% NaCl concentration promoted the production of AFs. The surface hydrophobicity results showed that the hydrophobicity of AFs increased significantly from 3942.05 to 6117.57 when the salt concentration increased from 0 to 0.4%, indicating that hydrophobic interactions were critical for the formation of AFs. Size exclusion chromatography combined with gel electrophoresis plots showed that the effect of NaCl on the molecular weight of AFs was small and mainly distributed in the range of 5-7.1 KDa (equivalent to 40-56 amino acid residues). X-ray diffraction and AFM images showed that the 0.4% NaCl concentration promoted the formation and longitudinal growth of AFs, while higher NaCl concentrations inhibited the formation and expansion of AFs. This study contributes to the understanding of the mechanism of AF formation in wheat flour processing and provides new insight into wheat gluten aggregation behavior.

Abstract
Facultative marine bacterial pathogens sense environmental signals so that the expression of virulence factors is upregulated on entry into hosts and downregulated during the free-living lifestyle in the environment. In this study, we utilized transcriptome sequencing to compare the transcriptional profiles of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae, a generalist pathogen that causes disease in diverse marine animals and fatal infections in humans at NaCl concentrations that mimic the free-living lifestyle or host internal milieu, respectively. We here show that NaCl concentration constitutes a major regulatory signal that shapes the transcriptome and uncover 1,808 differentially expressed genes (888 upregulated and 920 downregulated in response to low-salt conditions). Growth at 3% NaCl, a salinity that mimics the free-living lifestyle, upregulated genes involved in energy production, nitrogen metabolism, transport of compatible solutes, utilization of trehalose and fructose, and carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism with strong upregulation of the arginine deiminase system (ADS). In addition, we observed a marked increase in resistance to antibiotics at 3% NaCl. On the contrary, the low salinity conditions (1% NaCl) that mimic those encountered in the host triggered a virulence gene expression profile that maximized the production of the type 2 secretion system (T2SS)-dependent cytotoxins damselysin, phobalysin P, and a putative PirAB-like toxin, observations that were corroborated by the analysis of the secretome. Low salinity also upregulated the expression of iron-acquisition systems, efflux pumps, and other functions related to stress response and virulence. The results of this study greatly expand our knowledge of the salinity-responsive adaptations of a generalist and versatile marine pathogen.IMPORTANCEPathogenic Vibrionaceae species experience continuous shifts of NaCl concentration in their life cycles. However, the impact of salinity changes in gene regulation has been studied in a small number of Vibrio species. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptional response of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae (Pdd), a generalist and facultative pathogen, to changes in salinity, and demonstrate that growth at 1% NaCl in comparison to 3% NaCl triggers a virulence program of gene expression, with a major impact in the T2SS-dependent secretome. The decrease in NaCl concentration encountered by bacteria on entry into a host is proposed to constitute a regulatory signal that upregulates a genetic program involved in host invasion and tissue damage, nutrient scavenging (notably iron), and stress responses. This study will surely inspire new research on Pdd pathobiology, as well as on other important pathogens of the family Vibrionaceae and related taxa whose salinity regulons still await investigation.

Abstract
Chlorophenols frequently occur alongside salinity in industrial wastewater; thus, the effects of low concentrations of salinity (NaCl, 100 mg/L) on sludge performance, microbial community, and functional genes were deeply analyzed among 4-chlorophenol (4-CP, 2.4-4.0 mg/L) wastewater treatment. The influent 4-CP was effectively degraded, but the efficiencies for PO43--P, NH4+-N, and organics reduction were slightly inhibited by NaCl stress. Long-term NaCl and 4-CP stress significantly stimulated the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The abundances of predominant microbes at different taxonomic levels were affected by NaCl, and the increased relative abundances of functional genes encoding proteins contributed to resist NaCl and 4-CP stress. The functional genes associated with phosphorus metabolism and nitrogen metabolism in nitrification were unaffected, but the functional genes in denitrification increased in diversity under NaCl stress in 4-CP wastewater treatment. This finding acquires useful insight into the wastewater treatment with low chlorophenols and low salinity.

Abstract
The recent introduction of alkali metal halide catalysts for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has enabled remarkable two-dimensional (2D) growth. However, the process development and growth mechanism require further exploration to enhance the effects of salts and understand the principles. Herein, simultaneous predeposition of a metal source (MoO3 ) and salt (NaCl) by thermal evaporation is adopted. As a result, remarkable growth behaviors such as promoted 2D growth, easy patterning, and potential diversity of target materials can be achieved. Step-by-step spectroscopy combined with morphological analyses reveals a reaction path for MoS2 growth in which NaCl reacts separately with S and MoO3 to form Na2 SO4 and Na2 Mo2 O7 intermediates, respectively. These intermediates provide a favorable environment for 2D growth, including an enhanced source supply and liquid medium. Consequently, large grains of monolayer MoS2 are formed by self-assembly, indicating the merging of small equilateral triangular grains on the liquid intermediates. This study is expected to serve as an ideal reference for understanding the principles of salt catalysis and evolution of CVD in the preparation of 2D TMDs.

Abstract
The main bottleneck in the direct conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid (LA), a promising bio-based platform chemical, lies in the severe formation of humins, especially at high substrate loading (>10 wt%). Herein, we report an efficient catalytic system consisting of a 2-methyltetrahydrofuran/water (MTHF/H2O) biphasic solvent with NaCl and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as additives for converting cellulose (15 wt%) to LA in the presence of a benzenesulfonic acid catalyst. We show that both NaCl and CTAB accelerated the depolymerization of cellulose and formation of LA. However, NaCl favored the humin formation via degradative condensations, whereas CTAB inhibited humin formation by restraining the routes of both degradative and dehydrated condensations. A synergistic role of NaCl and CTAB on suppressing humin formations is illustrated. The combined use of NaCl and CTAB led to an increased LA yield (60.8 mol%) from microcrystalline cellulose in MTHF/H2O (VMTHF/VH2O = 2/1) at 453 K for 2 h. Moreover, it was efficient for converting cellulose fractioned from several kinds of lignocellulosic biomass, wherein a high LA yield of 81.0 mol% was achieved from wheat straw cellulose. This work presents a new strategy for advancing LA biorefinery by synergistically promoting cellulose depolymerization with orientated inhibition of undesired humin formation.

Abstract
Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is among the most widely used aromatic plants of Lamiaceae, often grown in areas where salinity is an adverse factor. Most studies on the effect of salinity on basil focused on the influence of salt stress on productive traits, while few reported on how it affects the phytochemical composition and the aroma profile. Three basil cultivars (Dark Opal, Italiano Classico, and Purple Ruffles) were grown hydroponically for 34 days with two nutrient solutions that differed in NaCl concentration [no NaCl (Control) and 60 mM NaCl]. Yield, secondary metabolite concentration (β-carotene and lutein), antioxidant activity [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reduction antioxidant power (FRAP)], and aroma profile based on composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were appraised in response to salinity applications. Salt stress significantly reduced fresh yield in Italiano Classico and Dark Opal by 43.34 and 31.69%, respectively, while no effect was observed in Purple Ruffles. Furthermore, the salt-stress treatment increased β-carotene and lutein concentrations, DPPH, and FRAP activities, and the total nitrogen content of the latter cultivar. CG-MS analysis revealed significant differences in VOCs composition of the basil cultivars, with Italiano Classico and Dark Opal characterized by the predominance of linalool (average 37.52%), which, however, was negatively affected by salinity. In Purple Ruffles, the predominant VOC compound, estragole (79.50%), was not affected by the deleterious effects of NaCl-induced stress.

Abstract
We hypothesized whether 10% praying-mantis-egg-cake (10% PMEC) can be applied against inflammatory-erectile-dysfunction and whether it could be linked to NO-cGMP-dependent PKG signaling cascade. Ninety male albino-rats were randomly distributed into nine (n = 10) groups. Group I was given distilled water. Group II and III were pre-treated with 80 mg/kg NaCl and 75 mg/kg MSG, respectively. Group IV was pre-treated with 80 mg/kg NaCl + 75 mg/kg MSG. Group V was administered with 80 mg/kg NaCl+ 3 mg/kg Amylopidin. Group VI was given 80 mg/kg NaCl + 10% PMEC. Group VII was treated with 75 mg/kg MSG + 10% PMEC. Group VIII was treated with 80 mg/kg NaCl+ 75 mg/kg MSG + 10% PMEC. Group IX was post-treated with 10% PMEC for 14 days. Penile PDE-51, arginase, ATP hydrolytic, cholinergic, dopaminergic (MAO-A) and adenosinergic (ADA) enzymes were hyperactive on intoxication with NaCl and MSG. The erectile dysfunction caused by inflammation was linked to alteration of NO-cGMP-dependent PKG signaling cascade via up-regulation of key cytokines and chemokine (MCP-1). These lesions were prohibited by protein-rich-cake (10% PMEC). Thus, protein-rich-cake (10% PMEC) by a factor of 4 (25%) inhibited penile cytokines/MCP-1 on exposure to mixture of salt-intake through NO-cGMP-PKG dependent-NF-KB signaling cascade in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cotton is an important industrial crop and a pioneer crop for saline-alkali land restoration. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the cotton response to salt is not completely understood. METHODS Here, we used metabolome data and transcriptome data to analyze the salt tolerance regulatory network of cotton and metabolic biomarkers. RESULTS In this study, cotton was stressed at 400 m M NaCl for 0 h, 3 h, 24 h and 48 h. NaCl interfered with cotton gene expression, altered metabolite contents and affected plant growth. Metabolome analysis showed that NaCl stress increased the contents of amino acids, sugars and ABA, decreased the amount of vitamin and terpenoids. K-means cluster analysis of differentially expressed genes showed that the continuously up-regulated genes were mainly enriched in metabolic pathways such as flavonoid biosynthesis and amino acid biosynthesis. CONCLUSION The four metabolites of cysteine (Cys), ABA(Abscisic acid), turanose, and isopentenyladenine-7-N-glucoside (IP7G) were consistently up-regulated under salt stress, which may indicate that they are potential candidates for cotton under salt stress biomarkers. Combined transcriptome and metabolome analysis revealed accumulation of cysteine, ABA, isopentenyladenine-7-N-glucoside and turanose were important for salt tolerance in cotton mechanism. These results will provide some metabolic insights and key metabolite biomarkers for salt stress tolerance, which may help to understanding of the metabolite response to salt stress in cotton and develop a foundation for cotton to grow better in saline soil.

Abstract
In order to investigate the salt stress induced chlorophyll biosynthesis-related genes in photoheterotrophic cultures, we performed RNA-Seq analysis on A. thaliana calli exposed to 100 mM NaCl on MS medium containing 0.5 mg/L 2,4-D 30 days. Four different conditions of samples were sequenced on Illumina HiSeq Platform in total and generated about 4.49 Gb per sample. The average genome and gene mapping rates were 93.52% and 90.78%, respectively. According to expression profile analysis, some DEGs demonstrated altered related to chlorophyll pigment metabolism. According to analysis, green callus color of photoheterotrophic calli were mainly connected with the induction of LHCB4.3 light harvesting complex photosystem II (Gene ID:818599), AT1G49975 photosystem I reaction center subunit N (Gene ID: 841421), PAM68 PAM68-like protein (DUF3464) (Gene ID: 2745715) and AT3G63540 thylakoid lumenal protein (Mog1/PsbP/DUF1795-like photosystem II reaction center PsbP family protein)(Gene ID: 7922413) genes. Furthermore, 8 DEGs were randomly selected to validate the transcriptome profiles via qPCR. These results will provide a foundation for further studies aimed at giving photosynthetic properties to in vitro plant cultures.
