Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the associations between thyroid hormone sensitivity indices and diabetes in euthyroid adults in the United States and China. METHODS 2296 euthyroid adults from the NHANES in the United States and 8319 euthyroid adults from the SPEED-Shunde in China were involved. The thyroid sensitivity indices, namely TFQIFT4 and TFQIFT3, were calculated. Multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and general ordinal logit regression were utilized. RESULTS In the NHANES, compared with participants in quartile 1st (Q1), those in Q4 of TFQIFT3 (OR 2.12, 95% CI (1.18, 3.81)) and those in Q3 of TFQIFT4 (OR 2.31, 95% CI (1.18, 4.53)) (both P for trend < 0.05) were associated with a greater prevalence of diabetes. In the SPEED-Shunde, compared with participants in Q1, those in Q4 of TFQIFT3 had a greater prevalence of diabetes (OR 1.36, 95% CI (1.11, 1.66) (P for trend < 0.05), while no significant associations between TFQIFT4 and diabetes were found. CONCLUSIONS TFQIFT3 was associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes both in the United States and China. However, TFQIFT4 was only associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes in the United States, not in China. Further prospective cohort studies are necessary to validate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypoglycemic pharmacotherapy interventions for alleviating the risk of dementia remains controversial, particularly about dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) inhibitors versus metformin. Our objective was to investigate whether the initiation of DPP4 inhibitors, as opposed to metformin, was linked to a reduced risk of dementia. METHODS We included individuals with type 2 diabetes over 40 years old who were new users of DPP4 inhibitors or metformin in the Chinese Renal Disease Data System (CRDS) database between 2009 and 2020. The study employed Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression for survival analysis and the Fine and Gray model for the competing risk of death. RESULTS Following a 1:1 propensity score matching, the analysis included 3626 DPP4 inhibitor new users and an equal number of metformin new users. After adjusting for potential confounders, the utilization of DPP4 inhibitors was associated with a decreased risk of all-cause dementia compared to metformin (hazard ratio (HR) 0.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.45-0.89). Subgroup analysis revealed that the utilization of DPP4 inhibitors was associated with a reduced incidence of dementia in individuals who initiated drug therapy at the age of 60 years or older (HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.48-0.98), those without baseline macrovascular complications (HR 0.62, 95% CI 0.41-0.96), and those without baseline microvascular complications (HR 0.67, 95% CI 0.47-0.98). CONCLUSION In this real-world study, we found that DPP4 inhibitors presented an association with a lower risk of dementia in individuals with type 2 diabetes than metformin, particularly in older people and those without diabetes-related comorbidities.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and sarcopenia (SP) have emerged as significant public health concerns in contemporary societies, characterized by shared pathophysiological mechanisms and interrelatedness, leading to profound health implications. In this prospective cohort study conducted within a US population, we aimed to examine the influence of MetS and SP on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Methods This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III for the years 1999-2006 and 2011-2018, and death outcomes were ascertained by linkage to National Death Index (NDI) records through December 31, 2019. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. In addition, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the robustness of the results. Results Over a median follow-up period of 13.3 years (95% CI: 12.8-13.8), 1714 deaths were observed. The groups characterized by MetS-/SP+, MetS+/SP-, and MetS+/SP+ exhibited higher all-cause mortality rates in comparison to the MetS-/SP- group, with the MetS+/SP+ group (HR 1.76, 95% CI: 1.37-2.25) displaying the highest all-cause mortality. Increased cardiovascular mortality was observed in the MetS+/SP- (HR 1.84, 95% CI: 1.24-2.72), and MetS+/SP+ groups (HR 2.39, 95% CI: 1.32-4.35) compared to the MetS-/SP- group, whereas it was not statistically significant in the MetS-/SP+ group. However, among males and individuals aged < 60, the presence of both MetS and SP (MetS+/SP+ group) was found to be significantly associated with a higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Conclusion The coexistence of MetS and SP increased the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, particularly in males and in nonelderly populations. Individuals with either MetS or SP may require more careful management to prevent the development of other diseases and thereby reduce mortality.

Abstract
AIMS There is a growing interest in the co-management of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and its metabolic comorbidities. However, there is insufficient epidemiological data regarding MAFLD and its metabolic comorbidities in China. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of MAFLD and its metabolic comorbidities. METHODS 9171 participants were recruited in this cross-sectional study, utilizing a multistage, stratified sampling method. All participants underwent a comprehensive assessment. The diagnosis of MAFLD was based on vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). The prevalence of MAFLD and its metabolic comorbidities was calculated. Binary and ordinary logistic regressions were conducted. RESULTS The overall weighted prevalence of MAFLD was 21.18%. Of the 2081 adults with MAFLD, 1866 (89.67%) had more than one metabolic comorbidity, and only 215 (10.33%) did not have comorbidity. Among the population with MAFLD, the prevalence of dyslipidemia, hypertension, hyperuricemia, and diabetes was 67.47%, 43.73%, 39.10%, and 33.88%, respectively. Advanced age, male gender, overweight/obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and elevated HOMA-IR levels were positively correlated with the number of MAFLD-related metabolic comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS A significant proportion of individuals diagnosed with MAFLD presented with metabolic comorbidities. Therefore, engaging in the co-management of MAFLD and its metabolic comorbidities is imperative.

Abstract
High-resolution income projections under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are essential for the climate change research communities to devise climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. To generate income projections for Washington state, we obtain state-level GDP per capita projections and convert them into projected annual household income. The resulting state-level income projections are subsequently downscaled to the census block-level based on the Longitudinal Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) dataset. For accuracy assessment, we downscale historical income data from state- level to block- and block group-level and compare the downscaled results against the actual income data from LODES. County-level accuracy assessment is also conducted based on American Community Survey. The results demonstrate a good agreement (Average R2 of 0.67, 0.8, and 0.99 for block-, block group-, and county-level, respectively) between the downscaled income data and the reference data, thereby validating the methodology employed. Our approach is applicable to other states for income projections, which can be utilized by a broader audience, including those involved in demographic analysis, economic research, and urban planning.

Background This study aimed to examine the associations of thyroid hormone sensitivity indices, including free triiodothyronine to free thyroxine (FT3/FT4) ratio, thyroid feedback quantile-based index by FT4 (TFQIFT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone index (TSHI), and thyrotrophic thyroxine resistance index (TT4RI) with all-cause mortality in euthyroid adults. Methods The study included 6243 euthyroid adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2012. FT3/FT4 ratio, TFQIFT4, TSHI, and TT4RI were calculated. The multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and subgroup analysis were conducted. Results Individuals in quartile 4th (Q4) had lower all-cause mortality than those in quartile 1st (Q1) of FT3/FT4 ratio (OR 0.70, 95% CI (0.51, 0.94)). Regarding TFQIFT4, individuals in Q4 of TFQIFT4 had a 43% higher all-cause mortality than those in Q1 (OR 1.43, 95% CI (1.05, 1.96)) (P <0.05, all). Compared with participants in Q1, no associations of TSHI and TT4RI with mortality were found. TFQIFT4 was linearly and positively associated with mortality. However, the FT3/FT4 ratio showed a U-shaped association with mortality. Conclusions Increased risk for all-cause mortality was positively associated with TFQIFT4, suggesting that increased risk for all-cause mortality was associated with decreased central sensitivity to thyroid hormones. Furthermore, the FT3/FT4 ratio showed a U-shaped association with mortality, with an inflection point at 0.5. However, more cohort studies are needed to validate the conclusions.

Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a new terminology characterized by liver steatosis. Iron status is related to many metabolic diseases. However, the researches on the associations of serum iron status with MAFLD are limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations of serum iron status biomarkers with MAFLD and liver fibrosis. A total of 5892 adults were enrolled in the current cross-sectional study using the 2017-March 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Liver steatosis and liver fibrosis were defined by the median values of controlled attenuation parameter ≥ 274 dB/m and liver stiffness measurement ≥ 8 kPa, respectively. The multivariable logistic/linear regression and restricted cubic spline analysis were conducted. After adjusting for potential confounders, higher ferritin levels were associated with higher odds of MAFLD (OR 4.655; 95% CI 2.301, 9.418) and liver fibrosis (OR 7.013; 95% CI 3.910, 12.577). Lower iron levels were associated with a higher prevalence of MAFLD (OR 0.622; 95% CI 0.458, 0.844) and liver fibrosis (OR 0.722; 95% CI 0.536, 0.974). Lower transferrin saturation (TSAT) was associated with a higher prevalence of MAFLD (OR 0.981; 95% CI 0.970, 0.991) and liver fibrosis (OR 0.988; 95% CI 0.979, 0.998). Higher ferritin levels, lower iron levels, and TSAT were associated with a higher prevalence of MAFLD and liver fibrosis. This study extended the knowledge of modifying iron status to prevent MAFLD and liver fibrosis. More prospective and mechanism studies were warranted to confirm the conclusions.

Abstract
The association between the serum essential metal elements (magnesium, iron, copper, zinc, and calcium) and thyroid nodules is still inconsistent. The current study aims to investigate the relationship of metal elements with thyroid nodules and their malignant tendency. A total of 6480 Chinese euthyroid adults were included in our study. We collect basic information through questionnaires and medical checkups. We diagnose thyroid nodules by ultrasound and detect serum trace metal concentrations by using an automatic biochemical analyzer. Binary and multinomial logistic regressions were used to investigate the associations. As a result, we found that serum copper concentrations were positively associated with thyroid nodules in the second, third, and fourth quartiles, compared to the first quartile (P = 0.024, P = 0.016, P = 0.032) in women and P for trend is 0.038. There is a significant sex-specific association between copper concentrations and thyroid nodules (P for interaction = 0.009). The results of the multinomial logistic regression analyses indicate high serum calcium and magnesium concentrations emerged as consistent risk factors for thyroid nodules in both genders, whereas low zinc was a sex-specific factor. We also observed significant sex interactions in the relationships of magnesium (P for interaction = 0.043) with thyroid nodules with malignant tendency among participants with thyroid nodules. In conclusion, our study suggests that gender is an important factor when studying the association between serum metals and thyroid nodules. The imbalance of selected metal elements (calcium, copper, zinc, and magnesium) may relate to thyroid nodules and their malignant tendency, and future prospective studies are needed to further confirm the associations.

Abstract
An adsorption experiment and a pot experiment were executed in order to explore the mechanisms by which biochar amendment in combination with reduced irrigation affects sodium and potassium uptake, root morphology, water use efficiency, and salinity tolerance of cotton plants. In the adsorption experiment, ten NaCl concentration gradients (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, and 500 mM) were set for testing isotherm adsorption of Na+ by biochar. It was found that the isotherms of Na+ adsorption by wheat straw biochar (WSP) and softwood biochar (SWP) were in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the Na+ adsorption ability of WSP (55.20 mg g-1) was superior to that of SWP (47.38 mg g-1). The pot experiment consisted three factors, viz., three biochar amendments (no biochar, WSP, and SWP), three irrigation strategies (deficit irrigation, partial root-zone drying irrigation - PRD, full irrigation), and two NaCl concentrations gradients (0 mM and 200 mM). The findings indicated that salinity stress lowered K+ concentration, root length, root surface area, and root volume (RV), but increased Na+ concentration, root average diameter, and root tissue density. However, biochar amendment decreased Na+ concentration, increased K+ concentration, and improved root morphology. In particular, the combination of WSP and PRD increased K+/Na+ ratio, RV, root weight density, root surface area density, water use efficiency, and partial factor productivity under salt stress, which can be a promising strategy to cope with drought and salinity stress in cotton production.

Abstract
Anthracycline antitumor agents, such as doxorubicin (DOX), are effective in the treatment of solid tumors and hematological malignancies, but anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (AIC) limits their application as chemotherapeutics. Dexrazoxane (DEX) has been adopted to prevent AIC. Using a chronic AIC mouse model, we demonstrated that DEX is insufficient to reverse DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. Although therapies targeting autophagy have been explored to prevent AIC, but whether novel autophagy inhibitors could alleviate or prevent AIC in clinically relevant models needs further investigation. Here, we show that genetic ablation of Atg7, a key regulator in the early phase of autophagy, protected mice against AIC. We further demonstrated that SAR405, a novel autophagy inhibitor, attenuated DOX-induced cytotoxicity. Intriguingly, the combination of DEX and SAR405 protected cells against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in vivo. Using the cardiomyocyte cell lines AC16 and H9c2, we determined that autophagy was initiated during AIC. Our results suggest that inhibition of autophagy at its early phase with SAR405 combined with DEX represents an effective therapeutic strategy to prevent AIC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Islet α cells input is essential for insulin secretion from β cells. The present study aims to investigate the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and islet function homeostasis in type-2 diabetes (T2D) patients. METHODS A total of 4670 T2D patients from seven communities in Shanghai, China were enrolled. The anthropometric indices, biochemical parameters, serum 25(OH)D, and islet function [including C-peptide (C-p) and glucagon] were measured. RESULTS The fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), glucagon, and C-p levels exhibited a significantly decreasing trend in T2D patients as the 25(OH)D levels increased. Next, the population was divided into two groups: abdominal obesity and non-abdominal obesity groups. After adjustment, the 25(OH)D level was found to be associated with HbA1c, glucagon, and homeostasis model assessment of β (HOMA-β) in the non-abdominal obesity group. There was a significant relationship between 25(OH)D and HbA1c, glucagon, HOMA-IR, baseline insulin or C-p in the abdominal obesity group. In the abdominal obesity group, the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and quantile regression revealed that 25(OH) D was obviously associated with glucagon and fasting C-p levels. In the abdominal obesity group, the moderate analysis revealed a significant interaction effect of 25(OH)D and glucagon on C-p (P=0.0124). Furthermore, the conditional indirect effect of 25(OH)D on the glucagon/C-p ratio was significantly lower at 1 standard deviation (SD) below the mean (P=0.0002), and lower at the mean of the course of diabetes (P=0.0007). CONCLUSION 25(OH)D was found to be negatively correlated to glucagon and C-p in T2D patients with abdominal obesity. The 25(OH)D influenced C-p in part by influencing glucagon. Abstract
Introduction Although several studies have explored the associations between single essential metals and serum uric acid (SUA), the study about the essential metal mixture and the interactions of metals for hyperuricemia remains unclear. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study to explore the association of the SUA levels with the blood essential metal mixture, including magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) in Chinese community-dwelling adults (n=1039). The multivariable linear regression, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were conducted to estimate the associations of blood essential metals with SUA levels and the BKMR model was also conducted to estimate the interactions of the essential metals on SUA. Results In the multivariable linear regression, the association of blood Mg, Mn, and Cu with SUA was statistically significant, both in considering multiple metals and a single metal. In WQS regression [β=13.59 (95%CI: 5.57, 21.60)] and BKMR models, a positive association was found between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. Specifically, blood Mg and Cu showed a positive association with SUA, while blood Mn showed a negative association. Additionally, no interactions between individual metals on SUA were observed. Discussion In conclusion, further attention should be paid to the relationship between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
CONTEXT Impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones has been demonstrated to be positively associated with the prevalence of metabolic disorders. However, the relationship between sensitivity to thyroid hormones and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and liver fibrosis remained unclear. OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine the associations of thyroid hormone sensitivity indices with MAFLD and its progression to liver fibrosis in Chinese euthyroid adults. METHODS This community-based study included 7906 euthyroid adults. We calculated the thyroid sensitivity indices, including free triiodothyronine to free thyroxine (FT3/FT4) ratio, Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index by FT4 (TFQIFT4), and Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index by FT3 (TFQIFT3), indicating peripheral and central thyroid hormone sensitivity respectively. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were diagnosed by vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). Multivariable logistic/linear regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were conducted. RESULTS Compared with participants in the first quartile (Q1), the prevalence of MAFLD was increased by 62% in the fourth quartile (Q4) of FT3/FT4 ratio (OR 1.62; 95% CI [1.38, 1.91]) and by 40% in Q4 of TFQIFT3 (OR 1.40; 95% CI [1.18, 1.65]) (both P < .05). No associations between TFQIFT4 and the prevalence of MAFLD were found. In addition, compared with participants in Q1, the prevalence of liver fibrosis was increased by 45% in Q4 of TFQIFT3 (OR 1.45; 95% CI [1.03, 2.06]) (P < .05) in participants with MAFLD. CONCLUSION Impaired central sensitivity to FT3 was associated with MAFLD and its progression to liver fibrosis. More prospective and mechanism studies are warranted to confirm these conclusions.

Abstract
Frictional properties of cartilage resurfacing implants should be sufficiently low to limit damaging of the opposing cartilage during articulation. The present study determines if native lubricious molecule proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) can adsorb onto a layer-by-layer bioinspired coating composed of poly-l-lysine (PLL) and dopamine modified hyaluronic acid (HADN) and thereby can reduce the friction between implant and articular cartilage. An ELISA was developed to quantify the amount of immobilized human recombinant (rh)PRG4 after exposure to the PLL-HADN coating. The effect on lubrication was evaluated by comparing the coefficient of friction (CoF) of bare polycaprolactone (PCL) disks to that of PLL-HADN coated PCL disks while articulated against cartilage using a ring-on-disk geometry and a lubricant solution consisting of native synovial fluid components including rhPRG4. The PLL-HADN coating effectively immobilized rhPRG4. The surface roughness of PCL disks significantly increased while the water contact angle significantly decreased after application of the coating. The average CoF measured during the first minute of bare PCL against cartilage exceeded twice the CoF of the PLL-HADN coated PCL against cartilage. After 60 min, the CoF reached equilibrium values which were still significantly higher for bare PCL compared to coated PCL. The present study demonstrated that PCL can effectively be coated with PLL-HADN. Additionally, this coating reduces the friction between PCL and cartilage when a PRG4-rich lubricant is used, similar to the lubricating surface of native cartilage. This makes PLL-HADN coating a promising application to improve the clinical success of PCL-based cartilage resurfacing implants.

Abstract
Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is increasingly common, and serological markers include thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb). To determine if selected metals influence thyroiditis antibody positivity, this cross-sectional study investigated associations between metals and thyroiditis antibody status. Healthy individuals (n = 1104) completed a questionnaire and underwent checkups of anthropometric parameters, thyroid function status, and levels of seven metals in blood (magnesium, iron, calcium, copper, zinc, manganese, and lead). Associated profiles of glyco- and lipid metabolism were also established. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression analysis were applied to adjudge associations between metals and TPOAb and TgAb status. It was found that, after adjusting for likely cofounding factors, participants with antibody positivity had significantly lower serum concentrations of magnesium and iron. When serum magnesium levels were analyzed in quartiles, the odds ratios of quartile 4 were 0.329-fold (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.167-0647) and 0.259-fold (95% CI 0.177-0.574) that of quartile 1 regarding TPOAb and TgAb positivity (P = 0.004, 0.003). After adjustment, the RCS analysis detected nonlinear associations between iron and TPOAb and TgAb positivity (P < 0.01, both). In stratified analyses, these associations regarding magnesium and iron remained for women of reproductive age, but not for postmenopausal women and men. We conclude that lower serum levels of magnesium and iron are associated with incremental positivity of thyroiditis antibodies and may be among the most important metals contributing to AIT in women of reproductive age.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Biochar amendment provides multiple benefits in enhancing crop productivity and soil nutrient availability. However, whether biochar addition affects root morphology and alters plant nutrient uptake and shoot growth under different irrigation regimes remain largely unknown. METHODS A split-root pot experiment with maize (Zea mays L.) was conducted on clay loam soil mixed with 2% (w/w) of wheat-straw (WSP) and softwood (SWP) biochar. The plants were subjected to full (FI), deficit (DI), and alternate partial root-zone drying (PRD) irrigation from the fourth leaf to the grain-filling stage. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results showed that, compared to plants grown in unamended soils, plants grown in the biochar-amended soils possessed greater total root length, area, diameter, volume, tips, forks, crossings, and root length density, which were further amplified by PRD. Despite a negative effect on soil available phosphorus (P) pool, WSP addition improved soil available nitrogen (N), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) pool and cation exchange capacity under reduced irrigation. Even though biochar negatively affected nutrient concentrations in shoots as exemplified by lowered N, P, K (except leaf), and Ca concentration, it dramatically enhanced plant total N, P, K, Ca uptake, and biomass. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the modified root morphology and increased soil available nutrient pools, and consequently, the higher plant total nutrient uptake might have facilitated the enhanced shoot growth and yield of maize plants in biochar-added soils. Biochar amendment further lowered specific leaf area but increased leaf N concentration per area-to-root N concentration per length ratio. All these effects were evident upon WSP amendment. Moreover, PRD outperformed DI in increasing root area-to-leaf area ratio. Overall, these findings suggest that WSP combined with PRD could be a promising strategy to improve the growth and nutrient uptake of maize plants.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Thyroid function has a large impact on humans' metabolism and is affected by iodine levels, but there is a scarcity of studies that elucidate the association between thyroid function and other elements. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study on 1,067 adults to evaluate the associations of the common essential metals with thyroid function in adults living in an iodine-adequate area of China. Serum free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and blood metals (zinc, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, and calcium) were measured. Further, the thyroid hormone sensitivity indexes, FT3:FT4 ratio, and thyrotropin T4 resistance index (TT4RI) were calculated. Linear regression, quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression methods were used to explore the association of metals with thyroid function. RESULTS We found that the TSH levels correlated with copper (negative) and zinc (positive). Iron and copper were positively associated with FT3 and FT4 levels, respectively. Iron (positive) and copper (negative) were correlated with the FT3:FT4 ratio. Furthermore, we found that manganese was inversely correlated with TT4RI, while zinc was positively correlated. DISCUSSION Our findings suggest that manganese, iron, copper, and zinc levels were strongly correlated with thyroid function, and patients with thyroid disorders are recommended to measure those metals levels.

Abstract
Background Although several studies have examined the relationships between lead (Pb) exposure and serum lipid profiles, the associations of the metal mixture, including lead (Pb) and essential metals with lipid profiles, remain unclear. Objective To investigate the associations of the metal mixture including Pb and essential metals [magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and calcium (Ca)] with serum lipid profiles [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)], as well as the potential interactions among the metals. Methods Nine hundred and ninety-eight Chinese community-dwelling adults completed a questionnaire and underwent checkups of anthropometric parameters, serum lipid profile levels (TC, TG, LDL-C, and HDL-C), and blood metal concentrations (Pb, Mg, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, and Ca). The multivariable linear regression, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were applied to evaluate the single and combined associations of blood Pb and essential metals with serum lipid profiles. Results In the multivariable linear regression model, the blood Pb was positively associated with TC, LDL-C, and HDL-C (p < 0.05, all), and the blood Mg were positively associated with serum TC, LDL-C, and Ln TG (p < 0.05, all). In the WQS regression and BKMR models, the metal mixture of blood Pb and the essential metals was positively associated with all of the serum lipid profiles. In addition, an inverse U-shaped association of Pb with Ln TG and the positive interactive effect between blood Pb and Mg levels on TC and LDL-C were found. Conclusion The levels of blood Pb, together with the essential metals, especially Mg levels, are suggested to be considered when assessing dyslipidemia risk. However, more evidence is still needed to validate the conclusions.

Abstract
Although previous studies have examined the hepatotoxicity of single metal exposure, the associations between metal mixture and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or fibrosis remain unclear. This study investigated the associations of urinary metal mixture with the risks of NAFLD and liver fibrosis in US adults using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2017.01 to 2020.03. Vibration-controlled transient elastography was used to detect the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM), which are indicators of NAFLD and liver fibrosis respectively. Three novel mixture modeling approaches including the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and quantile g-computation (qgcomp) were used to estimate the associations of the urinary fourteen-metal mixture with Ln CAP and Ln LSM. There were 2283 adults aged over 18 years (1209 women and 1074 men) were included. Among women, urinary metal mixture was positively associated with Ln CAP in the BKMR and qgcomp models (both P < 0.05). However, no significantly associations of urinary metal mixture with Ln CAP were observed among men in all models (all P > 0.05). The metal mixture was not associated with Ln LSM in the three models regardless of genders (all P > 0.05). In conclusion, we observed sex-specific associations between urinary metal mixture and the prevalence of NAFLD in US adults. These findings emphasize the role of environmental heavy metal exposure in the development of NAFLD, and confirm the need for more prospective cohort studies on sex-specific manner.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although phthalates are common environmental pollutants, few studies have focused on the relationship of phthalates exposure with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or liver fibrosis, and especially, the alternative phthalates have been questioned in recent years about whether they are better choices. Thus, this study aimed to explore the associations of exposure to major phthalates or alternative phthalates with NAFLD and liver fibrosis. METHODS Data of 1450 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 were collected. The urinary metabolite concentrations of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) were detected. Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and median liver stiffness measurement (LSM) were acquired for quantitative diagnosis of NAFLD and liver fibrosis by vibration-controlled transient elastography. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis were performed to examine the associations between phthalates and NAFLD and liver fibrosis. RESULTS After adjustment of the potential factors, the prevalence of NAFLD was significantly elevated among those in the fourth quartile of mono-(2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl) phthalate (OR, 95%CI = 2.719, 1.296, 5.700, P = 0.016), mono (2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (OR, 95%CI = 2.073, 1.111, 3.867, P = 0.037). No significant association was found between the alternative phthalates and NAFLD. The similar result was gained by linear regression analysis that MECPP was still significantly associated with Ln CAP (Q4 vs. Q1: β, 95%CI = 0.067, 0.017, 0.118, P = 0.027). After adjustment for the same covariates, no significant association between phthalates and liver fibrosis was found in logistics regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS All in all, higher prevalence of NAFLD is correlated with DEHP but not DINP or DIDP in American adults. There is no significant relationship between phthalates and liver fibrosis defined as LSM ≥ 8 Kpa. Nevertheless, further research is needed to provide evidence of causality.

Abstract
Background Clinical research results on the relationship between folate and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are contradictory. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a recently proposed concept. Evidence about the relationship between serum folate and MAFLD, especially considering the status of serum vitamin C, is scarce. This study was aimed to investigate the association of serum folate levels with the prevalence of MAFLD, and further to analyze the potential impact of serum vitamin C status on their association. Methods Totally 2,797 participants from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 were included. Vibration-controlled transient elastography was used to detect liver steatosis and fibrosis. Participants were divided in groups based on the tertiles of serum folate or vitamin C, and the serum folate or vitamin C level in T1 was low. Logistic regression analysis in the complex sample module was performed to illustrate the association of serum folate levels with the prevalence of MAFLD. Stratification analysis by serum vitamin C status was performed as well. Results Compared with the serum folate levels of T1 group, participants in the T3 group had 47.9% lower risk of MAFLD [OR = 0.521 (95% CI: 0.401-0.677)]. However, when participants were stratified by serum vitamin C levels, there was no association between the serum folate levels and MAFLD in the T1 or T2 group. Among participants in the T3 group of vitamin C status, participants in the T3 group of serum folate had a 63.6% lower risk of MAFLD compared with the T1 group [OR = 0.364 (95% CI: 0.147-0.903)]. Conclusions High serum folate level is associated with lower prevalence of MAFLD, especially in participants with sufficient vitamin C.

Background The association between occurrence of thyroid nodules (TNs) and trace elements detectable in blood are still inconclusive. The present study sought to determine the relationship between selected trace elements and TNs in the iodine-adequate area of Guangdong, China. Methods A total of 1,048 participants from four communities were enrolled. A number of medical checkups were conducted to collect relevant data on anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, glucose blood levels and lipid profiles, as well as data on thyroid function, presence of thyroid autoantibodies, and trace elements. Presence of TN was diagnosed by ultrasonography. Results Of the 1048 participants (49.5 ± 14.4 years old), 543 participants (51.8%) had TNs. Serum copper, magnesium and zinc levels are associated with the presence of TNs among healthy subjects. Subjects with higher levels of zinc, magnesium and copper had 1.23-fold, 1.04-fold, and 1.007-fold increased risks of the prevalence of TNs (P = 0.013, 0.017, and < 0.001, resp). Compared with the first quartile of copper content in serum, participants in the fourth quartile had the highest prevalence of TNs with an odds ratio of 8.90 (95% confidence interval (CI) 5.41, 14.94) among all participants. Women in the third quartile of magnesium level had a 1.86-fold (95%CI 1.05, 3.31) risk of the prevalence of TNs. Subjects in the highest quartile of zinc level had a 1.82-fold (95%CI 1.06, 3.16) risk of the prevalence of TNs in females. Conclusion TNs were found highly prevalent in females in the investigated population from an iodine-adequate area of Guangdong, China. The imbalance of selected trace elements (copper, magnesium and zinc) in the body is related to the presence of TNs among healthy subjects. The observed correlation of copper on TNs warrants further studies.

Abstract
The Hamburg Aerosol Module version 2.3 (HAM2.3) from the ECHAM6.3-HAM2.3 global atmosphere-aerosol model is coupled to the recently developed icosahedral nonhydrostatic ICON-A (icon-aes-1.3.00) global atmosphere model to yield the new ICON-A-HAM2.3 atmosphere-aerosol model. The ICON-A and ECHAM6.3 host models use different dynamical cores, parameterizations of vertical mixing due to sub-grid scale turbulence, and parameter settings for radiation balance tuning. Here, we study the role of the different host models for simulated aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and evaluate impacts of using HAM2.3 and the ECHAM6-HAM2.3 two-moment cloud microphysics scheme on several meteorological variables. Sensitivity runs show that a positive AOT bias over the subtropical oceans is remedied in ICON-A-HAM2.3 because of a different default setting of a parameter in the moist convection parameterization of the host models. The global mean AOT is biased low compared to MODIS satellite instrument retrievals in ICON-A-HAM2.3 and ECHAM6.3-HAM2.3, but the bias is larger in ICON-A-HAM2.3 because negative AOT biases over the Amazon, the African rain forest, and the northern Indian Ocean are no longer compensated by high biases over the sub-tropical oceans. ICON-A-HAM2.3 shows a moderate improvement with respect to AOT observations at AERONET sites. A multivariable bias score combining biases of several meteorological variables into a single number is larger in ICON-A-HAM2.3 compared to standard ICON-A and standard ECHAM6.3. In the tropics, this multivariable bias is of similar magnitude in ICON-A-HAM2.3 and in ECHAM6.3-HAM2.3. In the extra-tropics, a smaller multivariable bias is found for ICON-A-HAM2.3 than for ECHAM6.3-HAM2.3.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lead (Pb) has been suggested as an endocrine-disrupting chemical. However, few studies have investigated the association between chronic Pb exposure and fatty liver disease. OBJECTIVES We aimed to investigate the association of chronic Pb exposure with fatty liver disease and whether the variations of the gut microbiota involve in the mechanism of the fatty liver disease induced by chronic Pb exposure. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 3066 rural participants in East China. Blood lead level (BLL) was detected, and abdominal ultrasonography was used to diagnose hepatic steatosis. Both the definition of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) were used. Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups and each group was exposed to 0 or 0.05% w/v Pb through drinking water for 28 weeks. The relevant parameters of hepatic lipid metabolism and gut microbiota were analyzed. RESULTS In humans, after adjusting for potential confounders, the odds of having NAFLD and MAFLD were significantly increased by 54% and 52% in the participants in the fourth BLL quartile (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.24, 1.91 and OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.22, 1.89). In the rats, chronic Pb exposure induced the increased visceral fat, hepatic steatosis, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, including the decrease of richness, diversity, evenness and phylogenetic diversity of the gut microbiota and the significant alternations of the gut microbiota composition, particularly, the decrease of the relative abundance of Coprococcus and Oscillospira at the genus level. CONCLUSIONS Chronic Pb exposure could induce fatty liver disease, which may be associated with the variations of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the effects of different ethnicities and potential environmental exposure on the prevalence of thyroid autoimmune status and hypothyroid status. DESIGN The data were obtained from two cross-sectional studies. PARTICIPANTS 2105 participants in Shanghai (Han) and 772 participants in Yunnan Honghe Prefecture (Han, Yi, Miao and Hani), aged 18-75 were enrolled. METHODS Participants underwent several checkups, including urinary iodine concentration, blood lead (BPb) and blood cadmium (BCd), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) as well as thyroid ultrasonography (US). Thyroid autoimmune status was defined as: antithyroid antibody positive (ATA+): TPOAb + or TgAb+; and ATA + and US+: TPOAb + or TgAb + together with characteristic US features. RESULTS The standardised prevalence of thyroid autoimmune positivity in Yunnan were higher than those in Shanghai (TPOAb+: 13.56% vs 8.27%, p<0.001; TgAb+: 9.28% vs 7.09%, p=0.045; ATA+: 16.96% vs 11.10%, p<0.001; ATA + and US+: 8.96% vs 6.64%, p=0.036). For urinary iodine-to-creatinine ratio (UI/Cr), compared with the level of 100.00-199.99 µg/g, the level of ≥300.00 µg/g had a 1.5-fold risk for ATA + and US+ (OR 1.455, p=0.041). The levels of 200.00-299.99 µg/g and ≥300.00 µg/g were positively associated with hypothyroid status (OR 1.509, p=0.002 and OR 1.338, p=0.043). Compared with the first quartiles, the fourth quartiles of BPb were positively associated with TPOAb+: (OR 1.637, p=0.006), ATA+ (OR 1.435, p=0.025), ATA + and US+ (OR 1.641, p=0.013), hypothyroid status (OR 1.467, p=0.013) and TSH levels (B 0.092, p=0.021). The fourth quartile of BCd was positively associated with the prevalence of ATA+ (OR 1.427, p=0.036). CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of UI/Cr, BPb and BCd may be associated with thyroid autoimmunity and hypothyroid status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) in China resulted in high prevalence of diet-related non-communicable diseases. The aim of this study was to analyse the moderation of economic status in the association between early famine exposure and metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in adulthood. METHODS 10 190 participants in the SPECT-China study enrolled from 2014 to 2016 were included in this study. Participants with fetal famine exposure (birth year 1959-1962) or early-childhood famine exposure (birth year 1955-1958) formed the exposure group. The associations with MAFLD were assessed via regression analyses. RESULTS In men, economic status could not moderate the association between early life famine and MAFLD after adjusting for age, excess alcohol drinking, current smokers, famine severity, waist circumference, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia (P for interaction = .52). However, in women and in the total population, economic status could moderate the association between early life famine and MAFLD after adjusting for the above confounders (P for interaction = .01). In the total population and in women, early life famine exposure was associated with MAFLD in both low economic status and high economic status. However, in men, early life famine exposure was not associated with MAFLD in low economic status, while in high economic status, early-childhood famine exposure was associated with MAFLD. CONCLUSIONS Economic status could moderate the association between early life famine exposure and MAFLD in total population and in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Serum uric acid (UA) is related to many metabolic diseases. However, the association of UA with liver diseases was not very clear. The objective of this study is to clarify the relationship of UA with liver steatosis and fibrosis. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of 4364 people of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were assessed by controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurements (LSM) using Vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). Linear and logistic regressions were performed. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, UA levels were associated with the prevalence of liver steatosis [OR=2.097 (95%CI: 1.245, 3.534)] and liver fibrosis [OR=2.983 (95%CI: 1.797, 4.952)]. Furthermore, the results were consistent in the subgroup analyses of males and females. CONCLUSIONS UA levels were positively associated with the prevalence of liver steatosis and fibrosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed as a new definition to put emphasis on the metabolic aspects of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aim to compare the cardiovascular and renal burden between MAFLD and NAFLD patients. METHODS 12183 participants were enrolled in East China. The cardiovascular burden (Framingham risk score and previous cardiovascular diseases (CVD)) and renal burden (eGFR and chronic kidney disease (CKD)) were measured. RESULTS The risk of hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, overweight/obesity, and central obesity of MAFLD patients were higher than those of NAFLD. Patients with MAFLD have a similar or higher beta coefficients in Framingham risk score [beta (95%CI): male 0.062 (0.055,0.069) vs 0.041 (0.033,0.048); female 0.014 (0.012,0.016) vs 0.012 (0.01,0.014)], and higher odds ratio in previous CVD [odds ratio (95%CI): male 1.50 (1.22,1.85) vs 1.35 (1.1,1.66); female 1.58 (1.33,1.87) vs 1.45 (1.22,1.72)], compared with those with NAFLD. However, compared with males with MAFLD, the odds ratio of CKD was higher in those with NAFLD [eGFR: -2.731 (-3.422, -2.041) vs-3.578 (-4.268, -2.887). CKD: 1.44 (1.05,1.96) vs 1.56 (1.14,2.12)]. In female, CKD was only marginally associated with NAFLD [0.8 (0.62,1.02), P=0.075], but not MAFLD [0.87 (0.68,1.11), P=0.268]. CONCLUSIONS Patients with MAFLD have a similar or higher risk of future and previous CVD compared with those with NAFLD, but the risk of CKD was higher in male with NAFLD.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prognostic value of (18)F-fluorodeoxygen-D-glucose-positron emission tomography /computerized tomography ((18)F-FDG-PET-CT) in Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) at the end of first-line treatment (PET-end), by comparing the ratio of maximum standardized uptake value (SUV(max)) of lesion and liver SUV (rLL), SUV(max) reduction between baseline PET (PET-0) and PET-end (ΔSUV(max)), and Deauville 5-point scale (5-PS). Methods: Patients with HL newly treated in our hospital from August 2006 to December 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. All the patients enrolled in the study underwent post-treatment FDG PET-CT. The rLL and ΔSUV(max) were calculated, and all the cases were scored using Deauville 5-PS. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) approach was applied to identify the optimal cut-point value, and survival curves according to different PET-CT assessment methods were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier analysis. The prognostic efficacy of different PET-CT assessment methods was compared, and DeLong test was used to verify it. Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazards model were performed to analyze the potential independent risk factors. Results: There were 5 patients progressed within a 3-year follow-up. In the three PET-CT assessment methods, the predictive value of rLL and Deauville 5-PS were significant effective. ROC analysis for rLL as a progression predictor showed an optimal cut-point of 1.29. Deauville 5-PS=4 and rLL=1.29 showed the best prognostic accuracy. The sensitivity of rLL and Deauville 5-PS were both 80.0%, and the specificity of each was 98.0% and 93.7%, respectively. The positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of rLL were 66.7% and 98.7%, while the PPV and NPV of 5-PS were 44.4% and 98.7%. The 3-years progression-free survival (PFS) rates of rLL≥1.29 group and rLL<1.29 group were 33.3% and 98.7%, with significant difference (P<0.001). The 3-years PFS rates of post-treatment Deauville 5-PS<4 group and Deauville 5-PS≥4 group were 98.7% and 55.6%, with significant difference (P<0.001). The prognostic evaluation efficacy of rLL was positively correlated with that of Deauville 5-PS (r=0.75, P<0.05). Area under curves (AUC) of rLL and Deauville 5-PS were 0.93 (95%CI: 0.825-1.000) and 0.91 (95%CI: 0.757-1.000), respectively. DeLong test showed the significant difference between the two methods (P<0.05). The univariate analysis results showed that clinical baseline stage, post-treatment rLL and Deauville 5-PS were associated with the prognoses of HL patients (P<0.05). The multivariate analysis results showed that post-treatment rLL and Deauville 5-PS were independent prognostic factors of HL (P<0.05). Conclusions: The rLL and Deauville 5-PS are potential prognostic factors for HL response assessment. The new semi-quantitative method rLL has methodological advantages over visual analysis, and it is a good supplement for Deauville 5-PS. rLL can improve prognostic evaluation accuracy of PET-CT and is useful to early identify patients with HL at a high risk of relapsing after first-line treatment.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) results in more than half of the mortality and the majority of morbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes. We aim to evaluate the associations of urinary concentrations of phthalate metabolites with CVD in diabetic patients and explore whether CVD risk factors mediate or interact with these associations. A total of 675 type 2 diabetic participants were enrolled from Shanghai, China, in 2018. CVD was defined as a self-reported diagnosis by a physician including coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, or stroke; it was further reconfirmed in the records from the registration platform. Ten phthalate metabolites were measured in urine. We found positive associations were found among the level of monoethyl phthalate and monoisobutyl phthalate and CVD (OR 1.138, 95% CI 1.032, 1.254; OR 1.369, 95% CI 1.049, 1.786, respectively). Monoisobutyl phthalate and monobenzyl phthalate were marginally and positively associated with carotid intima-media thickness and common carotid artery diameter, respectively. None of the CVD risk factors, including HOMA-IR, body mass index, lipid profile, or blood pressure, significantly mediated the association between the metabolites and CVD. The conditional indirect effect on CVD was significantly stronger for current smoking and dyslipidemia for monoethyl phthalate and for no statin usage and men for monoisobutyl phthalate. In conclusion, phthalate exposure was positively associated with CVD in Chinese with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetic men who are currently smoking, have an uncontrolled lipid profile, and are not using statins might be more susceptible to CVD when exposed to phthalates.

Abstract
Objective: To summarize the interim outcome and right heart development of pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum (PA-IVS) in children after fetal cardiac intervention (FCI). Methods: The clinical data of 5 live births underwent FCI from October 2018 to April 2019 in Women and Children's Hospital, Qingdao University were analyzed retrospectively. The development of right ventricle (RV) and tricuspid valve (TV) in uterus after FCI, at birth, the age of 6 months, 1 year and 2 years, and the final outcome were assessed. Results: Five PA-IVS fetuses were included in this study. The first evaluation was performed at 24-26 weeks of gestational age, and the FCI was performed at 26-28 weeks of gestational age. During the follow-up of 6 weeks after FCI, the minimum diameter of tricuspid annulus increased from 0.85 cm to 0.92 cm, and the minimum Z-score of tricuspid annulus decreased from -0.03 to -1.62. The minimum values of TV/mitral valve annular diameter and RV/left ventricular length ratios of all fetuses increased from 0.57, 0.52 to 0.88, 0.82, respectively. The maximum tricuspid regurgitation velocity decreased from 4.60 m/s to 3.64 m/s. No severe hemodynamic change was found in any of the fetuses. All 5 fetuses were born alive. Three cases underwent percutaneous balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty (PBPV) and stent implantation for ductus arteriosus. Two cases received PBPV alone. At follow-up (26 to 32 months), obvious development of TV was observed 6 months to 1 year after birth in 5 cases with the growth rate ranging from 19.64% to 40.00%. Meanwhile, the RV development was relatively slow at 6 months with the growth rate ranging from 9.41% to 21.42%. There were individual differences in RV development at 2 years. The growth and development of all children were equal to healthy children of the same age with the body mass index less than 18.4 kg/m2. At the last follow-up, all children had a transcutaneous oxygen saturation of greater than 0.95, three became biventricular circulation and two had circulation approximation to biventricular circulation with almost closed stent. Conclusions: The findings support the potential of development of right ventricular and tricuspid valve for fetuses with PA-IVS underwent FCI. All fetuses underwent FCI received intervention after birth, and biventricular circulation can be realized finally. The development of right ventricular and tricuspid valve is not proportional. In utero, the right ventricle develops rapidly, and the development of tricuspid valve is more advantageous after birth.

Abstract
In recent years, cities in southern China have experienced severe air pollution, despite having few sources of pollutants. To study the pollution characteristics of PM2.5 in these “low industrialized” cities, a numerical method based on the HYSPLIT4 Model and Kriging Spatial Interpolation Technology was established. Simulation results showed that the PM2.5 pollution in Guilin was affected by both internal and external sources. The backward air mass trajectory from July 2017 to June 2018 was simulated using the HYSPLIT model. The cluster analysis results indicated that the direction of trajectory ? accounted for 63.09% of the air pollution in the city. The average concentration of PM2.5 pollution was 45.94 ?g.m-3. The pollutant originated from the “Xiang-Gui Corridor.” The location of the sources was collocated with high industry regions. The spatial characteristics of the four pollution processes in the winter of 2017 were analyzed using a spatial interpolation method. The results showed that the transport of air masses in the direction of trajectory ? was obstructed by a mountain system in the northeast. Therefore, two air pollution accumulation centers and a topographic weakening zone dominated by internal and external sources were formed. It can be inferred that the air pollution in Guilin is affected by both internal and external factors. These results provide important theoretical and technical support for regional air pollution control and environmental protection.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Early famine exposure has been related to the development of type 2 diabetes; however, little is known about whether the genetic background modifies this association. We aimed to investigate the joint effects of famine exposure at different stages of early life and genetic susceptibility on diabetes risk in adulthood. METHODS The study included 8350 participants from the Survey on Prevalence in East China for Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors (SPECT-China) who were born around the time of the Chinese Great Famine. We determined famine exposure subgroups according to the birth year as nonexposed (1963-1974), fetal-exposed (1959-1962), childhood-exposed (1949-1958), and adolescence-exposed (1941-1948). We developed a genetic risk score of 21 variants previously associated with type 2 diabetes in East Asians. Hierarchical logistic models were used to examine the association of famine exposure and genetic risk with diabetes. RESULTS The age-standardised prevalence of diabetes in nonexposed, fetal-exposed, childhood-exposed and adolescence-exposed subgroups was 13.0%, 18.2%, 15.1% and 13.2%, respectively. Compared with nonexposed participants, fetal-exposed participants showed an increased risk of diabetes in adulthood (OR 1.47; 95% CI 1.13, 1.93). A higher genetic risk score was associated with an increased risk of diabetes (OR 1.23; 95% CI 1.15, 1.31 per SD increment). The association between famine exposure and diabetes was consistent across genetic risk strata (all p for interaction >0.05). When considered jointly, fetal- or childhood-exposed participants at high genetic risk (highest tertile of genetic risk score) had 2.60-fold (95% CI 1.71, 3.93) and 1.95-fold (95% CI 1.24, 3.05) higher risks of diabetes, respectively, compared with nonexposed participants at low genetic risk (lowest tertile). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATIONS Prenatal exposure to famine was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in Chinese adults independent of genetic risk score using 21 variants common in the East Asian population. Famine exposure and genetic susceptibility may exhibit an additive effect on diabetes development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lead (Pb) is considered an endocrine-disrupting chemical. However, few studies have investigated the effects of low-level Pb exposure on plasma glucose levels. Herein, we aimed to investigate whether low-level Pb exposure causes elevated plasma glucose levels and the possible mechanisms involved. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 5747 participants from 16 sites in China. The participants underwent measurements of anthropometric factors, blood lead level (BLL) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG). Wistar rats were exposed to 0.05% Pb through drinking water or fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) for 28 weeks. The relevant parameters of glucose homeostasis, hepatic glucose production (HGP) and gene expression levels of hepatic gluconeogenesis enzymes, including phosphoenolpyruvate carboxy kinase (PEPCK), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6PC) and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBP1), were measured. In addition, gene expression levels of gluconeogenesis enzymes were also measured in HepG2 cells administered with different concentrations of lead acetate for 24 h. RESULTS In humans, after adjusting for confounders, the odds of having High_FPG (≥5.6 mmol/L) were significantly increased by 25% in the participants in the fourth BLL quartile (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.05, 1.49). In the animals exposed to 0.05% Pb, FPG, HGP and hepatic gene expression levels of PEPCK, G6PC and FBP1 were increased. In addition, the mRNA expression levels of PEPCK, G6PC and FBP1 in HepG2 cells were also increased in response to Pb exposure. CONCLUSIONS These findings support the possibility that low-level Pb exposure may increase HGP by affecting key enzymes of hepatic gluconeogenesis, eventually resulting in impaired FPG and hyperglycemia.

Abstract
The Coatomer protein complex subunit beta 2 (COPB2) is involved in the formation of the COPI coatomer protein complex and is responsible for the transport of vesicles between the Golgi apparatus and the endoplasmic reticulum. It plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of these cellular organelles, as well as in maintaining cell homeostasis. More importantly, COPB2 plays key roles in embryonic development and tumor progression. COPB2 is regarded as a vital oncogene in several cancer types and has been implicated in tumor cell proliferation, survival, invasion, and metastasis. Here, we summarize the current knowledge on the roles of COPB2 in cancer development and progression in the context of the hallmarks of cancer.

Abstract
Environmental lead exposure has been linked with reduced kidney function. However, evidence about its role in diabetic kidney damage, especially when considering the nutritional status of vitamin D, is sparse. In this observational study, we investigated the association between low-level lead exposure and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) and assessed potential impact of vitamin D among 4033 diabetic patients in Shanghai, China. Whole blood lead was measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was tested using a chemiluminescence immunoassay. The associations of blood lead with UACR and albuminuria, defined as UACR ≥30 mg/g, according to 25(OH)D levels were analyzed using linear and Poisson regression models. A doubling of blood lead level was associated with a 10.7% higher UACR (95% CI, 6.19%-15.5%) in diabetic patients with 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L, whereas the association was attenuated toward null (2.03%; 95% CI, -5.18% to 9.78%) in those with 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/L. Similarly, the risk ratios of prevalent albuminuria per doubling of blood lead level between the two groups were 1.09 (95% CI, 1.03-1.15) and 0.99 (95% CI, 0.86-1.14), respectively. Joint analysis demonstrated that a combination of high blood lead and low 25(OH)D corresponded to significantly higher UACR. Among diabetic patients with 25(OH)D < 50 nmol/L, the increment of UACR relative to blood lead was more remarkable in those with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (<60 mL/min/1.73 m2). These results suggested that higher blood lead levels were associated with increased urinary albumin excretion in diabetic patients with vitamin D deficiency. Further prospective studies are needed to validate our findings and to determine whether vitamin D supplementation yields a benefit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone is thought to be the reservoir of the human lead burden, and vitamin D is associated with bone turnover. We aimed to explore whether exposure to lower 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels was associated with higher blood lead levels (BLLs) by increasing the bone turnover rate in individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS A total of 4103 type 2 diabetic men and postmenopausal women in Shanghai, China, were enrolled in 2018. Their 25(OH)D, β-C-terminal telopeptide (β-CTX), N-MID osteocalcin and procollagen type 1 N-peptide (P1NP) levels were detected. Their BLLs were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Mediation analyses were performed to identify the possible role that bone turnover played in the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS In both the men and postmenopausal women, all three bone turnover markers were inversely associated with 25(OH)D and positively associated with the BLL (all P < 0.01) after adjusting for age, current smoking habits, metabolic parameters, duration of diabetes, vitamin D intake, and use of anti-osteoporosis medication. In the mediation analyses, none of the direct associations between 25(OH)D and BLL was significant for the three bone turnover markers, but all three bone turnover markers were found to be significant mediators of the indirect associations between 25(OH)D and BLL. CONCLUSION The association between vitamin D and BLL was fully mediated by bone turnover markers in type 2 diabetic patients (mediation effect). This finding suggested that vitamin D may protect against blood lead exposure from the bone reservoir by decreasing bone turnover in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Exposure to malnutrition in early life has been found to significantly elevate type 2 diabetes risk in adulthood. However, the changes in metabolites resulting from malnutrition in early life have not been studied. The aim of this study was to identify metabolites with levels associated with type 2 diabetes resulting from exposure to China's Great Famine (1959-1962). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Participants were from SPECT-China 2014 and SPECT-China2 2019, two cross-sectional studies performed at the same site. In total, 2171 subjects participated in SPECT-China and SPECT-China2 simultaneously. The sample size of fetal-exposed (1959-1962) versus non-exposed (1963-1974) individuals was 82 vs 79 in 2014 and 97 vs 94 in 2019. Metabolomic profiling was performed between famine-exposed and non-exposed groups. RESULTS Among the different famine exposure groups, the fetal-exposed group (1959-1962) had the greatest incidence rate (12.5%), with an OR of 2.11 (95% CI 1.01 to 4.44), compared with the non-exposed group (1963-1974). Moreover, compared with those in the non-exposed group (1963-1974), four metabolites (indole-3-carbinol (I3C), phosphatidylcholine (PC) (22:6(4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z,19Z)/16:1(9Z)), pyrimidine, and PC(16:1(9Z)/22:5(4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z))) showed significantly lower relative intensities in the famine and diabetes groups both in 2014 and 2019. Pyrimidine significantly mediated the association of famine exposure with diabetes, and I3C marginally mediated this association. CONCLUSIONS Famine exposure in the fetal period could increase type 2 diabetes risk in adults, even those in their 60s. I3C and pyrimidine are potential mediators of the effects of famine exposure on diabetes development.

Abstract
AIMS Phthalates, which are recognized environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals, are associated with thyroid hormone disruption. We aimed to evaluate the relationship of phthalate metabolites with thyroid function and thyroid homeostasis parameters in type 2 diabetes and to explore whether thyroid autoimmunity status and metformin, the most common antidiabetic drug, may influence such associations. METHODS Concurrent urine and blood samples were collected from 639 participants with type 2 diabetes in the METAL (Environmental Pollutant Exposure and Metabolic Diseases in Shanghai) study. We measured urinary concentrations of thirteen phthalate metabolites along with serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total T4 and T3, free T4 (FT4) and T3 (FT3), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb). Four parameters of thyroid homeostasis, including the sum activity of step-up deiodinases (SPINA-GD), thyroid secretory capacity (SPINA-GT), Jostel's TSH index (TSHI), and thyrotroph thyroid hormone resistance index (TTSI), were also calculated. RESULTS Among all participants, after full adjustment, multivariable regression analysis showed that some urine phthalate metabolites were negatively associated with TSH, TSHI, and TTSI levels and positively associated with FT3, T3, SPINA-GD, and SPINA-GT levels. None of the urine phthalate metabolites exhibited a significant association with thyroid autoimmunity. The associations of phthalate metabolites with thyroid function and thyroid homeostasis parameters differed based on thyroid autoantibody and metformin treatment status. CONCLUSIONS Urinary phthalate metabolites may be associated with thyroid function and thyroid homeostasis parameters among participants with type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, our present study suggested that thyroid autoantibody status and metformin treatment status are potential mediators of such associations.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies have suggested that a high blood lead level (BLL) is associated with cardiovascular outcomes and impaired renal function in the general population; however, studies investigating the effect of a high BLL on diabetic vascular complications have been limited. We aimed to investigate whether a higher BLL is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD). METHODS We analyzed 4234 individuals out of 4813 diabetic participants enrolled from seven communities in China in 2018 in this cross-sectional study. Macrovascular measurements, including assessment of common carotid artery (CCA) plaques and their diameters, were performed with ultrasound. CVD was defined as a composite measure including a previous diagnosis of coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, or stroke. The definition of DKD was an albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥30 mg/g or an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Linear and logistic regression analyses were used to measure the associations. RESULTS The median age and BLL of the participants were 67 years (interquartile range, 62-72 years) and 26 μg/L (interquartile range, 18-36 μg/L). Compared with the first quartile, the odds ratio (OR) (95% CI) of CCA plaques ranging from none to bilateral in the ordinal logistic regression analysis associated with BLL was 1.53 (1.29, 1.82) in the fourth BLL quartile (P for trend <0.01), and the odds of having CVD was significantly increased by 44% for participants in the fourth quartile (1.44 (1.17, 1.76)) (P for trend <0.01). The odds of DKD in the fourth BLL quartile increased by 36% (1.36 (1.06, 1.74)) compared with that in the first quartile (P for trend <0.05). These associations were adjusted for potential confounders. CONCLUSIONS A high BLL may be a potential risk factor for CVD and DKD in middle-aged and elderly diabetic adults.

Abstract
CONTEXT The double burden of malnutrition (DBM), undernutrition in early life and an obesogenic environment later on, influences later risk of chronic disorders. The Great Famine in China from 1959 to1962 and remarkable economic development from the 1980s provided such a burden for a large number of people in their 60s. OBJECTIVE We aimed to analyze the effect of economic status on the association between famine exposure in early life and hyperuricemia in adulthood. DESIGN AND SETTING Participants numbering 12 666 were enrolled in China based on the Survey on Prevalence in East China for Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors (SPECT-China) Study from 2014 to 2016. PARTICIPANTS Participants with fetal or childhood famine exposure (birth year 1949-1962) formed the exposure group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Hyperuricemia was defined as uric acid (UA) > 420 μmol/L for men and > 360 μmol/L for women. The association of famine with hyperuricemia was assessed via regression analyses. RESULTS Early-life famine exposure was negatively associated with UA levels (P = .045) but was not associated with hyperuricemia (P = .226) in the whole study population. Economic status could moderate the association of famine exposure with UA and hyperuricemia (P ≤ .001). In participants with high economic status, early-life famine exposure was positively associated with UA levels (unstandardized coefficients 7.61, 95% CI 3.63-11.59, P < .001), and with hyperuricemia (odds ratio 1.47, 95% CI 1.19-1.81, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Economic status could moderate the association between exposure to famine in early life and hyperuricemia in adulthood, indicating that the DBM might affect hyperuricemia in an opposite direction of the effects of undernutrition in early life alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chemoresistance is the major cause of therapeutic failure in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). In this work, we investigated the molecular mechanism for the development of TNBC chemoresistance. METHODS mRNA and protein levels of ST8SIA1 were analyzed in chemosensitive and chemoresistant TNBC cells and tissues. Proliferation and survival assays were performed to determine the role of ST8SIA1 in TNBC chemoresistance. RESULTS We found that ST8SIA1 mRNA and protein levels were increased in multiple TNBC cell lines after prolonged exposure to chemotherapeutic drugs. Consistently, retrospective study demonstrated that the majority of TNBC patients who developed chemoresistance displayed upregulation of ST8SIA1. We further found that chemoresistant TNBC cells were more sensitive than chemosensitive cells to ST8SIA1 inhibition in decreasing growth and viability. Consistently, ST8SIA1 inhibition augmented the efficacy of chemotherapy in TNBC cells. Mechanism studies demonstrated that ST8SIA1 inhibition led to suppression of FAK/Akt/mTOR and Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathways. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide an explanation for the heterogeneity of chemotherapy responses across TNBC individuals and reveal the supportive roles of ST8SIA1in TNBC chemoresistance.

Abstract
Personal care and consumer products are extensively used and contain various chemicals that are recognized as endocrine disrupting chemicals. Few epidemiological studies measured the associations of these chemicals and metabolites, especially phenols, with bone health. We measured the associations between nine urinary phenol biomarkers and BMD and the subsequent prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis. National representative data from US adults aged over 20 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2010 were used. 2,267 men, 1,145 premenopausal women and 1,033 postmenopausal women were included in the final analyses. Bisphenol A, benzophenone-3, triclosan, butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, 2,5-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography-isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry. Paraben concentrations, especially ethyl-, methyl- and propylparabens, were related to greater BMD in the femoral neck and intertrochanter and lumbar spine in men and premenopausal women. 2,4-dichlorophenol concentrations was associated with lower BMD and a higher prevalence of osteopenia + osteoporosis in men. Bisphenol A was associated with a higher prevalence of osteopenia + osteoporosis in the lumbar spine in postmenopausal women. Benzophenone-3 tended to be associated with a higher BMD of femur in men and premenopausal women. In conclusion, certain urinary personal care and consumer product chemicals and metabolites were significantly associated with BMD or osteopenia + osteoporosis. These results further indicate that, in future research, determination of the causal relationships and detection of undelying mechanism could be next important directions.

Abstract
Background The principal function of iodine acts on thyroid function, but in recent years, the role of iodine deficiency in metabolism has also been gradually revealed. We aimed to investigate the current status of iodized salt consumption and urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in an urban Chinese population with type 2 diabetes, and to further explore whether UIC was associated with diabetic microvascular complications. Methods Four thousand five hundred fifty-nine subjects with diabetes from 7 communities in downtown Shanghai were enrolled in the cross-sectional Metal Study in 2018. UIC was detected using an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) was defined as urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) > 30 mg/g or estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) was evaluated by high-quality fundus photographs and was remotely read by ophthalmologist. Results The median UIC of subjects with diabetes was 115.4 μg/L (78.9–170.8) in downtown Shanghai. Among all the subjects, 52.7% consumed non-iodized salt and 40.4% were iodine deficient. Iodine deficiency (UIC < 100 μg/L) was associated with an increased odds of DKD (OR 1.17; 95%CI 1.01–1.37) after adjustment for age, sex, education, current smokers, BMI, HbA1c, duration of diabetes, dyslipidemia, thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroxine. No association was observed between UIC and DR after multivariable adjustment. Conclusions A concerning number of subjects with diabetes consumed non-iodized salt and suffered from iodine deficiency in coastal regions of China. Low UIC might be a risk factor for DKD, which should be further confirmed by longitudinal prospective studies.

Abstract
Background and aims Obesity, especially abdominal obesity, has been considered a risk factor for diabetic complications. Many abdominal obesity indices have been established, including neck circumference (NC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI) and the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI). However, studies investigating the associations between these indices and diabetic complications are limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations of the abdominal obesity indices with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CVD), diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods A total of 4658 diabetic participants were enrolled from seven communities in Shanghai, China, in 2018. Participants completed questionnaires and underwent blood pressure, glucose, lipid profile, and urine albumin/creatinine ratio measurements; fundus photographs; and anthropometric parameters, including height, weight, waist circumference (WC), NC and hip circumference (HC). Results In men, a one standard deviation (SD) increase in CVAI level was significantly associated with a greater prevalence of CVD (OR 1.35; 95% CI 1.13, 1.62) and DKD (OR 1.38; 95% CI 1.12, 1.70) (both P < 0.05). In women, a one SD increase in CVAI level was significantly associated with a greater prevalence of CVD (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.04, 1.69) and DKD (OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.81, 3.47) (both P < 0.05). A one SD increase in NC was significantly associated with a greater prevalence of CCA plaque in both men (OR 1.26; 95% CI 1.10, 1.44) and women (OR 1.20; 95% CI 1.07, 1.35). These associations were all adjusted for potential confounding factors. Conclusions CVAI was most strongly associated with the prevalence of CVD and DKD among the abdominal obesity indices, and NC was unique associated with the prevalence of CCA plaque in Chinese adults with diabetes.
